National Overview: Zaralaja, officially the Federation of Zarlaja (Federación de Zaralajara/Federação de Zaralajara) is a federal parliamentary Republic located on the Western Side of Asteria Inferior. The country is bordered by Satucin and (Placeholder).

The first sign of human life in Zaralaja occurred around 17,000 to 13,000 years ago. The most likely route for humans to have arrived in the country is from Satucin along the coastline. Much later groups from the south crossed into what is modern day Zaralaja. Even though the languages were completely different they developed a similar culture.

Eucleans first settled in the country in 1577, the first colony of Miranda on the North-eastern coast by colonizers from Oratiano in modern day Auratia. A large amount of Iustian immigrants also settled in the country in the Iustian colony in the North-east.

In 1793 in response to austerity measures and the potential annexation by Gaullica, the Oratian colony declared independence, fighting a brief war of independence. Shortly after the Iustian colony was annexed by Zaralaja. From 1795 to 1850 the country was ruled by an autocratic Presidency with a democratically elected parliament. Iustian nationalists in response to the prohibition of the use of the Iustian language, declared independence from Zaralaja and began the Zaralajan civilwar, the war fell into a stalemate with Euclean nations unwilling or unable to help. The war ended with a treaty to grant Iustians special rights and make the Iustian language an official language of Zaralaja.

In the early 1920s the Catholic Renewal Front, a far-right, functionalist party won power in response to the great collapse and allied the country to the Gaullican functionalist government. Shortly after the start of the Great War, Zaralaja joined the Entente and declared war on Grand Alliance members. The Zaralajan military was primarily used for defense of the nation. In 1934 with the fall of Gaullica imminent and socialists taking up arms and occupying many urban areas, President Martín Alarcón surrendered to the Grand Alliance before being assassinated by Functionalist extremists.

In the aftermath of the war, a Leftist reconstruction government was implemented by the Grand Alliance and supported by the Community of Nations. The autocratic role of the Presidency was changed, making the President a figurehead with no real power.

Today Zaralaja is a Liberal Democracy with a high level of economic inequality. The country is a member of the CN.

Military Overview: The Zaralajan Military is primarily used for peacekeeping and defense. In post-war times the military has never been deployed to a foreign country. About 1.5% of the country's annual GDP. Zaralaja has no wmd's or Air Force carriers.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: LGBT rights in Zaralaja, whilst never been criminalized, still face challenges not experienced by other citizens. LGBT marriages were recognized by public referenda following an impasse at Congress that could not agree on a solution.

Despite recent advances in LGBT rights, reports of discrimination against members of the LGBT community are still commonplace. A reported 102 LGBT people were murdered in Zaralaja in 2018 and 77 in 2017, in spite of an overall fall in the murder rate
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Much of the population adheres to various forms of Sotirianity, however the majority adhere to Solarian Catholicism. Various minorities such as Irfan exist although in small amounts.
  • General population's view on atheism: Atheism is a taboo topic from the religious community. However the younger generation are more accepting of it.
  • General population's view on abortion: Prior to 1994, abortion in Zaralaja was illegal without exceptions. Therapeutic abortion to save a mother's life was permitted between 1837 and 1936. As of 1994, only in the following circumstances, which remain in effect to this day. These three exceptions are: The continuation of the pregnancy constitutes a danger to the life or health of the mother; The existence of life-threatening fetal malformations; The pregnancy is the result of rape, non-consensual artificial insemination or incest. In some states Abortion is fully legal.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Discrimination exists from the white Euclean community against the indigenous and Bahian community. Some forms of De-facto segregation and Ghettoes existing.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: Discrimination exists between the Iusitan minority and the !Spanish majority. The majority Iusitan states have contemplated independence before, at least 40% of the population support separation from Zaralaja
  • View on immigration into country: Immigration to Zaralaja has been significant. After the Spanish colonization of the Asterias brought Euclean colonists and Bahian slaves, immigration to Zaralaja was significant particularly in the period after Great War, with large numbers of immigrants from Coius and Euclea, particularly eastern Euclea..
  • Women's Rights: According to an international group, women in Zaralaja are at risk due to gender discrimination and the "hyper-sexualized stereotypes of Zaralajan women". Female suffrage was enacted following the end of the Great War and the post-war era.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs:The usage of Tobacco is discouraged although legal after the age of 18. The same can be said about Alcohol. Drugs such as Cannabis are only legal in medical uses.

National information
Official Name: Republic of Saint-Jean-Baptiste
Shortened Name: Saint-Baptiste (sometimes shortened further to SB)
Requested Location: Here!
Requested Population: 830,631 (would like to lower to maybe 5-700k, but will have to talk to Alexandria and others)
Culture: Saint-Baptiste’s population and culture derives heavily from Gaullican colonization, and the vast majority stem from slaves taken from Bahia. Due to this, Baptistois culture often is a mixture of Gaullican and Bahian culture, language (in the existence of Baptistois Creole) and beliefs. Saint-Bapitiste is lossely based around Haiti and its cultural heritages.
  • Ethnicity: 77% Bahian, 14% Multiracial, 8% Euclean, 1% Other
  • Religion: 93% Solarian Catholic, 6% Irreligious, 1% Other
  • Languages: 61% Baptistois Creole (recognized language), 35% Gaullican (official, main language of politics and admin.), 4% Other
Government Type: Unitary presidential republic
Head of State: Moïse Coquelin (President)
Head of Government: Moïse Coquelin (President)
Requested GDP Per Capita: $23,582 (PPP); $15,943 (nominal)
National Overview: A former colony of Gaullica, Saint-Baptiste was a centre for coffee and sugar production, built off the labour of enslaved Bahians. Although its colonial wealth made Saint-Baptiste influential in the region, it was almost always overshadowed by the lerger, more populous, and more wealthy Alexandria. After the end of the Great War and the collapse of Gaullica’s overseas empire in 1935, Saint-Baptiste initially joined Alexandria in a federal union. Unfortunately, cultural differences, primary among them animosity between the white Alexandrian elite and the more multiracial Baptistois political class, especially around Alexandria's segregationist policies, finally led Saint-Baptiste to declare its complete independence under President Pierre-Antoine Bachelet in 1947. The new state, facing a hostile neighbour and a lack of international recognition, fell under a dictatorship-by-decree under Bachelet’s tenure until his death in 1974. The dictatorship remained until the 1980s, when a collapsing economy and mass protests brought fresh elections in 1988. This period also included the recognition of Saint-Baptiste’s sovereignty by the Alexandrian government, and Saint-Baptiste’s acceptance into the international community. Although the island country has developed what some would call a “flawed democracy” in the years after, the shadow of the Bachelets and their regime still hang in the air above Port-Anne.
Military Overview: Saint-Baptiste does not officially have a military, although police are granted extensive rights and are de facto considered on par with military units in the region. Despite this, Saint-Baptiste does maintain a relatively large coast guard.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: Saint-Baptiste is a generally conservative country, and technically in law same-sex activity is deemed as illegal since 1950. These laws, however, have fallen by the wayside in all but name, and the country may be on the road to a very different future.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Saint-Baptiste, as a heavily-Catholic country, has a rather negligible population of minority religions, and discussions on these religions tend to be framed typically in ignorance, not malice.
  • General population's view on atheism: Lack of religion is seen as unusual, and as such many irreligious Baptitois still de jure remain within the Church out of tradition.
  • General population's view on abortion: Since 1947, abortion is illegal in all but in cases of rape, incest, or saving the mother’s life. Including this, access to abortions on the isalnd is diffecult, and there is a small industry around Baptistois women having abortions in countries with more open laws and better access.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): The three main ethnicities on Saint-Baptiste: Bahian, Euclean, and multiracial, live in an uneasy tolerance that, only rarely breaking into violence, shows still-existing scars of the former colonial structure. On average, white and multiracial peoples are over-represented in politics, high-paying jobs, and make up the bulk of the Baptistois elite, despite making a relatively same minority.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: Nothing not covered elsewhere.
  • View on immigration into country: Considering Saint-Baptiste is primarily a country with a larger emigration rate, debates on immigration are rare and, despite the country’s conservative policies elsewhere, fairly liberal on the subject.
  • Women's Rights: Women have been able to vote and hold office since 1935, and a rather robust feminist movement has maintained and pushed for further equality, as women are often cited as making on average half the wage for the same work as men, and there exists a not-oft discussed but very real glass ceiling in many businesses, including politics.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Despite Saint-Baptiste’s conservative values being well-known, the country is actually quite liberal on alcohol and soft drugs. Rum is a famed Baptistois export, and marijuana has been decriminalized since 2004, with considerable discussion around full legalization. Tobacco, as a large agricultural employer, is also granted these liberal views.

Government Type: Federal Parliamentary Republic
Head of State: President Ersnt Rupold
Head of Government: Prime Minister Omelyan Pavlov
Requested GDP Per Capita: $25,000
National Overview:
Vinalia is the name given to the region inhabited by the Vinakians, the native population of the region. Inhabited since antiquity by Zapoyans from the south but the region was characterized by a mixture of both Zapoyan and Meyaletun influences and the region struggled to be maintained under the control of one group. The first recorded instance of an independent Vinakian state was under the historic 15 City Confederacy, which united coastal city states which had seeked independence following Oaxicun decline in the south in modern day Marirana sometime in the 1400s. The Confederacy prospered and developed close economic ties with neighbouring groups with which they traded with.

The 15 City Confederacy unlike most of its neighbours survived the initial onslaught of Euclean Colonization by allowing the entrance of foreign economical interests into the region, trading heavily with the Eucleans. The Confederacy suffered from ever increasing plagues brought on by the eastern merchants, yet the Confederacy continued it’s policy of trade seeking to appease the easterners with greater and greater concessions. Narozalican traders inserted themselves as the main benefactors of this trade, due to their presence in the north of the country. Following news of the Yellow Tree Wars in the north and ever growing colonial interests the Confederacy turned to Poliania in the 1600s which desired to expand its trading interests in the region, as a countermeasure to the threat from the north, by the 17th Century however the Confederacy was more a collection of Euclean and Vinaki merchants which ruled the government. This would come to an end in 1720 when a conflict in Euclea between Poliania and Narozalica would result in the trading interests of Poliania granted over to Narozalica at great concern for Vinaki merchants which had established a Colonial government under their control, and were benefited by the merchant interests of Euclean powers to which they sold products to at an incredibly low price offering giving them the same amount of resources as owning the land just without the Administrative or Military cost of a full fledged colony. The Confederacy would be disbanded as Narozalica seeking a more hands on approach to the region, moved with ease into the territory, establishing a colonial administration to the one seen in it’s northern colony of Chistovodia. Submitting the poor Vinakis into reserves and reducing the wealth acquired by those in the former Colonial structure, with Vinaki landlords and Vinaki labourers being replaced by Narozalican landlords and labourers.

During the Narozalican Civil War Vinalia declared its independence, the movement was highly popular with the more Vinalian (Mixed) industrialized Northern regions of the colony than the more Trade based and Colonial South. Following independence Vinalia was established as a republic but suffered from the start from conflict between both regions, the War had seen most of the trade leave the South leaving it poor while the North profited from an ever growing industrial sector. This strife would only be increased by an ever growing Movement of National Reconciliation which seeked to grant the impoverished and disenfranchised indigenous greater entry into the government and economy at the expense of Southern Narozalican populations.

The Movement of National Reconciliation culminated in a Southern Military Coup which sparked the First Vinalian Civil War in 1882-1884, where the Southern Government proved victorious and a Military Dictatorship was established in Vinalia. This period saw an ever growing divide between the Southern and Northern Populations of the country known as the “Years of Pain” in the North, the concept of North Vinalianism also began to form as many seeked to establish a state free from the grasps of the South, this thinking would culminate in the Second Vinalian Civil War in 1902-1905, where North Vinalia gained independence from Vinalia, with it’s border at the Bin River being contested. Both would become democracies, following the Global Collapse. Northern Intellectuals would propose the nationalization of foreign and Southern assets in the nation along with the establishment of worker unions to defend the rights of workers to prevent another takeover as that experienced during the Years of Pain by the oppressing South. These unions would serve as the basis of the Workers Party of North Vinalia, who would in the 1940’s be elected to rule the nation seeking to emanate that achieved in it’s northern neighbour.

In the South a period of revitalization and remembrance of the Euclean past, known as “Revitalization” in the South, which emphasized South Vinalia as an Episetiamelist Narozalican descended nation. In the 1950’s growing tension between both states mainly fueled by rhetoric of establishing a new unified nation, in the Bin River Region the period known as the “Years of the Doves” between 1952-1955 would see the start of Ethnic conflict characteristic of the conflict begin as armed Ethnic militias from both nations engaged in conflict. The Years of the Doves were brought to a sudden in 1955, when failure to reach an agreement between both nations following an armed incident at the border culminated in the Southern Invasion of the North, and the start of the 3rd Vinalian Civil War 1955-1986.

The period is characterized by short bouts of violence followed by long periods of frozen conflict between both nations. In 1957 the first of a series of Armistices was signed by both sides. The Northern Government furthered by Socialist influence from above would abandon its intentions of establishing a Neutral United Vinalia, instead stating its intention to make the entirety of Vinalia a Socialist state. This was echoed in the South by ever increasing conservatism called the “Reunion” movement , seeking to emanate the policies found in its southern neighbor Marirana, in 1963 a North Vinalian invasion was launched following widespread reports of Vinaki massacres in Southern Controlled territory, the invasion would fail and establish the South as the militarily superior power. Following this defeat the rise of the “New Nation” Movement in the North which advocated for the destruction of all that ought to be considered backwards began, this move seeked the destruction of the Euclean roots of the nation for that of a new Vinalian identity. This culminated in yet another failed Northern offensive in 1969, after which the “New Nation” Movement began to lose support as many found less radical policies to be more welcoming to them. The South would experience rocky times as the concerns of an ever hawkish group seeked the unification of Vinalia while the South remained the Economically, and prosperous of the two Vinalias, and the mainly mixed Vinalian population which seeked to deal with issues regarding economic inequality and the ever growing anger of the Vinakians who in 1972 would start the People’s Liberation Army a Northern backed Socialist movement seeking the establishment of a Vinaki majority nation in the Zdavro Region. In 1974 a Military Coup in the South would democracy and begin the period of Economic and Political decline as the nation focused on fighting Leftists in the north and west as well as any dissident inside.

In 1978 another coup established a new Junta called the “15th of August Movement” which furthered cracked down on liberties for the Southern Population, this in conjunction with distracted Northern attention elsewhere would result in a Southern offensive in 1980, which was successful in capturing all the disputed towns and further pushing the North out, but the Juntas reluctance for peace in the wake of a Northern supported General Insurrection squashed all hopes of peace. Following this crackdowns on the General Insurrection the Freedom Party the main opposition group to the Military Juntas was disbanded with most of its members fleeing most of which to the North, where the government in the face of the 1980 defeat seeked to defeat the numerically superior South through economical might, several reforms were enacted to ensure a more free and open society to counter the ever closing and oppressive south. These reforms would in 1984 pay results as the North outpaced the South in every economical aspect, in 1985 the South would suffer an Economic Collapse plunging it’s economy to the ground, allowing the peace negotiations on both sides to begin.

This treaty ended the Civil War between both nations and established a neutral Vinaki majority nation in the middle, thus bringing an end to the Insurgency in the south. Following this peace those who sought after a liberalisation following the peace were quickly oppressed as the Military Junta lost favor with those who seeked liberalisation, and those which opposed the peace. In 1988 a new military coup would overthrow the liberalizing elements of the government and establish a brand new Government who was quick to begin negotiations with Zdavro regarding the discovery of Oil in what used to be Southern territory. These negotiations soon began to break down over the Zdavroan desire to operate these resources themselves, and the opposition from the North to any deal giving Southern Vinalia access to Zdavroan resources which the North believed violated the states mandated neutrality to both. Ever growing frustration from the south over the matter, and tension in the nation due to the ever worsening conditions and the rise of Leftist movements, culminated in the Southernern Invasion of Zdavro starting the 15 Day War in 1989.

The North immediately intervened against the South, the South perceived the North to be Militarily weaker but the rapid movement of Northern units resulted in the Southern defeat and it’s retreat out of Zdavro, with the news of Southern defeat the November Revolution in the South would explode, with interests in the return of democracy and the end of the dictatorship. The North would intervene invading the South and pushing inside, maintaining its intentions of establishing a free Southern Vinalia. The overthrow of the Dictatorship ended the Civil War. Following this both Vinalias would unite into a single nation following reunification in 1993 in the 90th Anniversary of the Republic being dismantled.

Military Overview: The People’s Defence Force is tasked with the defence of the Vinalian Sovereignty and interests, it’s divided into the People’s Army, People’s Navy, People’s Air Force, People’s Coast Guard, and the People’s Guard. The People’s Guard is a provincial level unit under the command of Provincial Governors. Although the Army has been fully professional since 1992, the People’s Guard relies on Conscripts to fulfill its role, this is to ensure that there will always be a 50/50 division between Northerners and Southerners. Vinalia has undergone rapid demilitarization from the Civil War going from around 750,000 between both Vinalia’s to some 100,000 plus 25,000 People’s Guard. By law expenditure may not exceed 1.5% of GDP in peacetime.

Social views:
  • By law LGBTQ+ are granted full rights as citizens. Some of the Conservative sectors especially those in South Vinalia are more cold to the subject.
  • The state maintains a mandated Secularism of Government, yet it upholds personal religious freedoms. Many especially in the South are deeply religious. Religion for many remains a point of contention in Vinalia due to the past highly vocal support for state mandated Atheism in the North due to the “New Nation” movement, and state Mandated Episemialist in the South of the “Reunion” movement that was prevalent of the two divided Vinalias before reunification.
  • Atheism is highly prevalent in the North of the country.
  • By Law Vinalia mantains Abortion at all levels, but it remains a point of contention in the South of the Country.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Discrimination mostly exists between Northerners and Southerners rather than to other groups.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: Relations between Northerners and Southerners although vastly better than in the past remain controversial.
  • Immigration is a subject of contention for both sides of the political spectrum in both regions, as Right-Wing and Conservatives groups tend to support a control over immigration and quotas, while those mostly in the Left-Wing support a state that should attract immigration as one of the Core Pillars of the “New Nation” Movement.
  • Vinalian Law upholds complete equality between men and women.
  • Alcohol, Tobacco, Pot are legalized in the country but have an age requirement (18) and require an official license to be sold in the nation.

National Overview: Formed through years of bloodshed and revolution. Otazians are a proud people who have been through many trying times. The nation endured many struggles in the early 1800s, a lack of contact to the new world and other continents due to an isolationist policy crippled the economy. Upon the death of the King at the time. His heir recognized the need for international trade and quickly reformed the governments policies on trade and relations. This helped the Otazians get back on their feet and eventually the RADP was established. The prosperity of the nation continued into the 1900s and helped raise the influence in Euclea. Around 1927 and the beginning of the great war. The Otazians government opted to join the side of the Entente. Otazia saw a fair amount of action in the first two years of the war but quickly withdrew as a growing communist revolts were popping up all over the homeland. Eventually the communist revolution was successful and ushered in a new era of Otazia. Factories, roads, apartment complexes. The nation saw a bolstering in its infrastructure and in its military as well. The communist government was successfully toppled in 1975 and replaced with an equally unstable fascist government. The Otazians know war all too well. Now in modern times Otazia enjoys a fairly right-wing government. However, the sentiments of extremism are far from gone and open opposition to the current government is a common sight throughout the nation. Recently the country has set it's sites on rebuilding the nation, clearing minefields and rebuilding the once crippled infrastructure, blood sweat and tears seems to be the near future of Otazia
Military Overview: Otazia has a relatively small yet well equipped military, with a total personnel count of 97,000. A majority of the military is made of reserves and a small portion is a dedicated peacekeeping force sent to unstable nations. The nation is currently looking to either purchase or manufacture an aircraft carrier and spends about 4.5% of it's GDP on the military annually.

  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Otazians vehemntly oppose most religions that are not naturally accepted. Even then Epismialist and Irfan followers have a hard time getting along
  • General population's view on atheism: Opposed by a majority of the nation
  • General population's view on abortion: Banned unless the mothers life is in danger
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): A Majority of Otazians are open to all walks of like. However there is a rising xenophobic movement in the nation.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: General racism, Communism and Fascism are on the rise in the nation as of late
  • View on immigration into country: Citizenship is fairly easy to obtain with bi-monthly checkups required for the first five years
  • Women's Rights: Legally Equal to Mens Rights, but the older populace tend to view women as lesser.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs:
All of it is legalized and monitored

-URT starts to attack several locations in Etruria, especially in Vespasia, while protests in Bregovia became more violent.
-In 1932 Bregovia creates a small armed resistence sponsored by XXXX and a civil combat starts
-In 1932 a clash between Etrurian forces and rebels resulted in the massacre of 14 people in the main square of CAPITAL CITY HERE.
-In 1934 a Military coupe takes place to declare the independence of the Independent Republic of Bregovia. They join the entente as a way to prevent further Etrurian domination and intervention
-In 1936, with the Entente defeat Etruria re-anexes Bregovia, but with the status of Constituent State, URT extinct.
-With the beginning of the Etrurian war, bregovian partisan resistence restores the independence in 1942, creating the Third Independent Republic of Bregovia
Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: given the Orthodoxy of the country, LGBT is seen as a taboo. Older generations will most likely be hostile to LGBT people, whereas newer generations are indiferent.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: among the elderly, the farther from orthodox, the worst. Again, newer generations are very indiferent towards religion, though some follow lighter churches than the Orthodox.
  • General population's view on atheism: same as above, just considering youngsters as atheistics.
  • General population's view on abortion: Against social ethics. Largely disapproved by the general population.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): As mentioned previously, bregovian people are rather rude, which means they will make jokes and comments about color, regardless what color is it. However, if you are Vespasian, just...do not come to Bregovia
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: V*spasians
  • View on immigration into country: Bregovian people are generally welcoming, always inviting new people to bars and pubs to drink.
  • Women's Rights: Women in Bregovia are pretty independent, thought they take over the more traditional duties without much complaint. Women in Bregovia enjoy the same rights as men
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Alcohol and tobacco, yes. Pot, no but depends on how well you can hide it (or how much you pay the police officer)

National information
Official Name: State of Meridia
Shortened Name: Meridia, sometimes Zolta. Meridia is the exonym whilst Zolta is the endonym. Government prefers Zolta so it is officially the State of Zolta.
Requested Location:
Image
An island in the Solarian Sea. Apologies for the crude drawing.

Requested Population: 619,287
Culture: The real-world inspiration for Meridia is Malta, but the Meridian people are not Maltese. Most Meridians are from the Sibár, an ethnic group originating from modern-day Tsabara that speaks a Semitic language. The Sibár were originally a merchant people that settled in diasporic communities along the coast of Meridia, a former province of the Solarian Empire, around the seventh century CE. Sibár traditions and religious practices are syncretic, mixing ancient Sibár culture with Etrurian culture.
  • Ethnicity: About 84% of the population is officially Sibár, but most have some Etrurian in their family lineage. The Sibár are divided between North Sibár and South Sibár, which speak different dialects. Ethnic Etrurians account for the rest, and they live in communities straddling the border with Etruria.
  • Religion: There is no dominant religion. About 40% of Meridians practice Shosa, a syncretic, Abrahamic religion that worships a solar deity with strong Sotirian undertones. Another 38% follow the Zolta Church of Sotiras, which is an autonomous sui iurus church in full communion with the Sotirian Catholic Church. 19% of the country is Sotirian Catholic, and the rest 3% are Atudites and other.
  • Languages: The Meridian language (officially: Lessán) is the country's official language. It is a Central Semitic language, but its grammar and language have been influenced greatly by Etrurian (like Maltese). Etrurian is a recognized language.
Government Type: It is a parliamentary republic with an executive presidency like South Africa. The State Chairman is the combined head of state and government. He is elected by the Khánas, the unicameral legislature. The political system is really unstable because there are lots of coups and countercoups as well as ethnic/religious violence to boot.
Head of State: State Chairman
Head of Government: State Chairman
Requested GDP Per Capita: $6,263

National Overview: The Meridian Island was a province of the Solarian Empire. The Solarians used Meridia as a stage for military conquest into Coius. Meridia would remain unimportant save for mining until about the 8th century when the Sibár people arrived onto the Euclean continent. The Sibár, who spoke a language close to
Badawiyan, were a merchant people who left their native lands along the Tsabaran coast because of famine. They settled into Meridia, driving out most of the native population, and ferried trade across Badawiya and into Euclea.

Sometime in the Middle Ages, the Sibár were subjugated by Etruria. The Shosa religion was persecuted, and the Sibár were made to work in mines as slaves. The Sibár continued their tradition of trade and commerce, albeit in a much more weakened state. When the Etrurian First Republic was established, the Sibár were given some rights and slowly emancipated, but Meridia was still occupied. Ethic cleansing and genocide of the Sibár in the 1940s gave rise to an independence movement. Meridia seceded from Etruria in 1953.

The ensuing decades up to the modern era are awash with ethnic and religious violence. This includes a litany of coups d’état and two civil wars. Intervention by the Community of Nations has calmed the atmosphere, but there is still a lot of sectarian violence. The economy is still piss poor and the government is corrupt, but things are shaping up for the good.

Military Overview: The country's armed forces are small and understaffed. There is a poorly-equipped army and barely anything of a navy. Local and ethnic militias, however, are powerful. The government sometimes enlists them if need be.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: Homosexuality is officially legal but in practice gay people would be shunned by their families and risk violence if they came out. The government doesn't protect gay people.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: There is a small Atudite community due to historical reasons. They are typically treated OK but a lot of the country is anti-semitic. People are walled off in terms of understanding other religions.
  • General population's view on atheism: Pretty much unheard of and would be shunned.
  • General population's view on abortion: Only allowed in order to save a mother's life.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): There's tons of ethnic and religious violence to go around.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: Ethnic and religious tensions are the big ones.
  • View on immigration into country: No one would want to come here, so people don't really think about immigration.
  • Women's Rights: Officially sanctioned but ignored. Most people believe women belong in the home.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Drugs are illegal, but there is a strong alcohol and drinking culture.

  • RP Intentions: Both for the most part.
  • Primary/Other NS Nations: I've had alts but I can't remember their names.
  • Any troubles with moderation? (If so, a link, please.): None.
  • Anything else?: I used to be a member of Esquarium. I joined sometime in 2016. Some people were having trouble contacting me to change stuff about my IIWiki stats, and I hadn't received/seen their messages. I had given the password of my account to a family member who started to make changes on my pages/delete my work under my account without my consent. These two things came to a head at the same time when I was accused of altering my pages for attention-seeking behavior/to troll. You can read what happened here: https://www.nationstates.net/page=displ ... tart=50975 (pg. 2,040 - 2,045 where Qianrong gives a summary of the events)

I wasn't involved in any of these alterations on my page and was caught by surprise. I left the region, then joined later and left again. I thought regional leaders ought to know in case it ever came up.

National information
Official Name: Holy Kingdom of Shantigara (पावन राज्य शान्तिगारस्य, Pāvana Rājya Śāntigārisya)
Shortened Name: Shantigara (शान्तिगार, Śāntigāra)
Requested Location:
Image

On ethnogeography: The two main landmasses that make up Shantigara are the Shantigaran Mainland and Dvīpa Island. The Shantigaran mainland is home to mostly Aryans who speak Indo-Aryan languages. Dvipa, the island, is composed of Dravidians who speak one of the Dravidian languages. You can think of the Mainland as northern India whilst Dvipa is southern India. The Dvipa Island is an autonomous region of Shantigara with its own rules. See Government Type for more information.

Requested Population: 118,857,401

Culture: The cultural identity of Shantigara goes back over four thousand years. It started with the writing of the not!Vedas, the core Brahmist religious text which set the foundation of Brahmist (Hindu) philosophy, mythology, theology, rites, literature, and societal structure around the Jātí, the caste system. The Jātí is kind of like the caste system in RL India, but there are notable changes. Like the caste system in India, there was no upward mobility in the Jātí system; one's rung on the Mahā́ Adhirohaṇī, the "Great Ladder of Being," was seen as a reflection of one's conduct in past lives. One difference is that the untouchable pariah class has been outlawed and its members have bee reincorporated into the Jātí. The caste system is still strong and present in Shantigaran society today. It denies many people, especially minorities, upward social mobility. '

Shantigaran culture prioritizes family connections and relationships. Most Shantigarans live with their extended family in their village, town, or community. Marriages are almost always arranged between two families in the community. It is very uncommon for a Shantigaran to be unwed by the age of thirty. Shantigaran society is patriarchal, patrilineal, and patrilocal. Wives, upon their marriage, move in with their husband's side of the family and are considered extensions of that family rather than of their family of birth.

Shantigaran literature, music, film, poetry, and art are centered around the themes of the epics of the past, such as the not!Mahābhārata and the not!Rāmāyaṇa. Most works of art and of literature are folkloric or religious in nature, though more modern themes and genres like science fiction are becoming popular. Shantighara has a long history of ritual dance and music festivals.

  • Ethnicity: Most Shantigarans on the Shantigaran Mainland are ethnically Aryans, similar to India, and speak various Indo-Aryan languages. To the country's east along the border with Subarna are ethnic Bengals. In the country's westernmost tip is the homeland of Punjabis. In Dvipa, most people are of Dravidian, the largest groups being Kannada in the east and the Tamil in the west.
  • Religion: Brahmism is Shantigara's national religion and exists side-by-side with Satyism. Although Brahmism is older than Satyism, most of Brahmist liturgy and tradition has been heavily influenced by Satyist thought and tradition. Most Shantigarans identify as Brahmist but practice Satyist rituals as well. Shantigarans do not believe it is contradictory to practice both religions at once syncretically. The religious situation is a lot like the one in Japan with Buddhism and Shinto if you want a reference. Some tribal religions are practiced in rural areas, especially on Dvipa. not!Sikhism should be practiced somewhere but I haven't figured that out.

Religion is very important in Shantigaran culture. The Brahmin class, highest on the Jātí, enjoy the most privileges and have a heavy hand in deciding and shaping government policy. Brahmist authority is structured around the High Priests, whose authority transcends the Raj in some ways.
  • Languages: The official language of Shantigara is Bhumi (Sanskrit), which is used for formal affairs and government documents. Bhumi is not spoken or understood by the vast majority of Shantigarans, however, and there are many other official and recognized languages. On the Mainland, most popular language is the Hindi, followed by Punjabi and Bengali. On Dvipa, the most popular languages are Kannada and Tamil. There are hundreds of other minor languages and dialects.
Government Type: Officially an absolute monarchy with a directorate-esque system. It's complicated. Strap in.
The Supreme Parishad, or the Council of the Elders, is the final executive, legislative, and judicial authority in Shantigara. It is composed of a fluctuating membership of nobles, Brahmist clergy, jurists, and civil servants (officially 108 members). The Parishad is the head of the larger institution known as the Rajmudra, the "Royal Court" which describes the noble, clerical, and civil institutions that form the Government. The Supreme Parishad is nominally responsible for setting policy, forming decisions for the Rajmudra, applying taxes, among other matters. Within the Supreme Parishad are subsections called Lesser Parishads that seat nobles, clergymen, and civil servants. We'll get to this later. The Supreme Parishad convenes three to five times a year.

The Rāja (राजन् Rājan), or King, is the supreme sovereign of Shantigara and the chairman of the Supreme Parishad. He is head of state and nominally the head of government. The Raja is a hereditary position. The Raja is responsible for executing the decisions of the Supreme Parishad and acts in its name. The power of the Raja is constrained by the Supreme Parashad and he can be overruled by it. The Raja appoints most leaders the civil service and military leaders. The Raja is the face of the nation and represents it abroad. He is also the lawful owner of all land and deeds of Shantigara. In practice, since the Raja is not involved in day-to-day politics, he is usually represented by the राजप्रतिनिधि Rājapratinidhi ("Viceroy"), who is usually a senior member of the royal family appointed to the position for life. The Rājapratinidhi typically handles foreign affairs.

The closest thing to a head of government is the Chairman of the Civil Service, or simply the अध्यक्ष Adhyaksha. The Adhyaksha is typically a commoner who is a member of the legislature Mahā Sabhā (more on that later). The Adhyaksha is de facto head of government. He chairs the Lesser Parishad of Civil Administration and is responsible for the domestic policy (not foreign or military policy). Although he is typically a member of the legislature, the Adhyaksha is not accountable to it and answers to the Supreme Parishad alone.

The Mahā Sabhā, the Great Assembly, is the country's legislature with one house. Officially, the Mahā Sabhā, or simply the Sabhā, does not have to exist since all legislative authority is in the Supreme Parishad. It exists to fulfill a democratic expectation. Members of the Sabha are called shasti, meaning "praiser, one who praises" or just "praise." There are 330 shasti who meet and are dissolved by the Raja and typically serve a term of five years. They are elected in first-past-the-post elections in constituencies. The Sabhā can vote to amend, approve, or reject proposals. Common shasti cannot propose laws by themselves. Laws can only be prposed by the Raja, Supreme Parishad, or by the Adhyaksha or the leaders and members of the Lesser Parishads.

There is more democracy in local governments. Shantigara is a devolved state. There are for provinces in Mainland Shantigara and one semi-autonomous region that is structured like a province. The head of each province is the Kumara, a royal prince who is a member of the royal family. Most provinces are actually run by viceroys on behalf of their Kumara and each province has its own assembly. The Dvipa Island, being autonomous, has its own government that is officially answerable to the King. The viceroy of Dvipa who is answerable to the Raja appoints the First Minister, who acts much more like a prime minister. Dvipa has leeway to set its own laws and the Rajmudra generally do not intervene in its affairs. There are calls for Dvipa independence.

Head of State: Rāja
Head of Government: Officially the Rāja, in practice the Adhyaksha.
Requested GDP Per Capita: 1,628 dollars
National Overview: I'm the most flexible about history because I don't know about the region history a lot. The basic points are Indo-Aryan migration into the peninsula as in India with periods of fracturing and unification (not!Maurya and Gupta empires). I imagine Shantigara is India but united in the 12th century to stop an Irfanic invasion. Im still hazy on the details. Shantigara conquers Dvipa in the 15th or 16th century. For the 20th century, it would be nice if Shantigara could be like Ethiopia so it was under occupation during war or something but never had a formal colonial administration (maybe during the Great War)? I'm listening to what you guys say about it.

Military Overview: The Rāja is the supreme commander of the armed forces, which are the Army, Navy, Airforce, and Marines. The Rāja appoints military leaders who rule in his name. Military leaders also have a position in the Supreme Parishad and are independent of the Civil Administration. Conscription into the military is mandatory for all boys at age 18 and there are 800,000 or so active personnels. Shantigara does not have nuclear weapons. Military is powerful in society and has led many coups against certain civil governments in the late 20th century/21st century as in Thailand.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: LGBT history goes back a long way in Shantigara. The idea of the third gender is longstanding in society. Lesbians are not that oppressed but are taboo. Gay men face persecution if they are commoners. However, it is common for higher government officials or nobles to take male lovers. Both male and female prostitutes are common in society. Homosexuality is officially shunned as against Brahmist teachings but is accepted in some circles. The case is similar for transgender people.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Brahmism is the official state religion and the encouraged religion. Most Shantigarans incorporate Satyism into their lifes as well. Irfan is not viewed well because of history and Sotirianity has a connotation of Euclean oppression. So generally not accepted.
  • General population's view on atheism: Pretty much unheard of. Most people are devout.
  • General population's view on abortion: Illegal in most cases, but upper class women can have access. Laws are liberalising because of unsustainable population growth.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Because Shantigara is so diverse there is a lot of ethnic tension. Davangaris face persecution outside of Dvipa. The government favors Indo-Aryans to others and there is a lot of discrimination and ethnic violence.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation:
  • View on immigration into country: Brahmist and Satyist refugees from neighboring countries are welcomed.
  • Women's Rights: Women are subordinate to the men of the family. The exception is royal or noble women who can have some leeway.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Psychedelics are common among the upper class commoners but are illegal. Alcohol regulations vary by province.

Other:
  • Factbook: Will get soon
  • RP Preferences: I don't really like RP that much. I prefer worldbuilding. Im not however opposed to it.

National information
Official Name: Republic of Dakata
Shortened Name: Dakata
Requested Location: Whole area between Xiaodong, Ajadhaya, Phula, Kituk and Baekjeong.
Requested Population: 73,317,135
Culture: Equivalent in the real world would be the Hmong culture, albeit, of course, not all aspects would remain the same. For example, I'd say the culture is somewhat more egalitarian and 'Westernized' in a sense.
  • Ethnicity:
While Dakata has a diverse population, the ethnic makeup of the country could be described as a trifecta between Dakatans (56.1%), Himavantans (21.2%) and those who are Xiaodongese (14.9%). The rest is made up by other, smaller ethnic groups residing in the country, which are sometimes also considered as Dakatan.
  • Religion:
The religion with most followers inside of Dakata is Satyism (68.1%), followed by Bashurati Badi (14.6%), Taojiao (12.4%) and Badi (4.9%). Government policy recognizes Satyism as the official religion of Dakata and Satyism is promoted, sometimes at the expense of other religions, which has resulted in backlash from religious minorities in the country. Satyism is also promoted by authorities as a part of the Dakatan national identity, which has inflamed religious tension in the country at times.
  • Languages:
Linguistically, people usually speak multiple languages, usually corresponding to their ethnicity, but the accepted lingua franca of the country is Dakatan, which is also the language used in government facilities and communications, albeit it is sometimes supplanted by Gaullician or the respective regional language. By law, the government must guarantee communication in any language that is requested. In Dakata, being a part of the majority ethnic group has almost become synonymous with the national identity of the country itself as promotions of nationalism are common and encouraged elements of Dakatan culture have become elemental and important to the wider culture of the country. While most accept this, minorities with separatist tendencies such as the Himavantans and the Xiaodongese have accused the central government of discrimination.

Government Type: parliamentary republic
Head of State: President Undecided
Head of Government: Premier Undecided
Requested GDP Per Capita: $1,374.99
National Overview:

According to historic records and evidence, it is believed that the first arrivals in the territory of Dakata occurred at around 55,000 BC with the first permament settlements forming in the Valley of G at 5,000 BC. “Dakata” first appears in various Ajadhayan ancient texts during the Mythic Period in which the lands of Dakata, ruled by the Khang dynasty around or before 1,000 BC are described as having a trade relationship with southern Satrians, controlling the flow of goods in and outside of the valley. The name “Dakata” is derived from “Dakṣiṇa parvatō” which means “southern mountains” and has since been the name for the territories, eventually becoming the name of the country.

By 550 BC, the Khang dynasty had conquered the whole valley in a series of conflicts. At 490 BC, the Phuli Empire subjugated the territories of the Khang dynasty and created, in effect, a tributary state, the most notable effect being exporting Satyism. With the gradual collapse of the Phuli Empire, the Khang dynasty severed connections with the Phuli at 65 BC and would rule until a succession war between embittered twins would fracture the relatively peaceful dynasty into a fractuous warlord period until being conquered by the Sangma Empire in 490 AD.

The Thakurate of Dakata, or rather the Sangma lordship over it, would exist until 1437 when the governor withdrew his loyal connections with the weakening Sangma and revolted, despite being a governor loyal to the plight of the central government, but it was mostly a facade to extract concessions. Briefly, Dakata would be independent, albeit in 1560 was conquered by the Togoti Khaganate, whose relatively initial brutal, but later mild rule would last 105 years until 1665, when a succession war would erupt between two possible heirs, breaking the Empire apart and allowing for a power vacuum in the former territories, as the Empires’ control and order collapsed, establishing another period of warlordism and lack of authority.

It would last until 1880 when the Heavenly Xiaodongese Empire would conquer the territories, re-establishing itself as a, at the least, a regional power. Inbetween various social and political upheaveal in Xiaodong, Dakata would be established as the Republic of Dakata in 1935 following the Treaty of Keisi after the conclusion of the Great War.

Initially being run by a transitional government composed of political parties and guerrilla movements of all spectrums, the nation would vote in their first elections in 1940, which would result in the victory of the Popular Party, running on a vague platform of nationalism and prosperity, land redistribution. Turning the country into an authoritarian after suspending the constitution in 1941 following an attempted assassination attempt on the President, the regime is sometimes described as a neo-functionalist regime, strongly promoting pro-Dakata nationalism and oppressing minorities.
The Popular Party would control Dakata until a coup d’ etat in 1970 by a group of officers known as the Yang Gang, led by Suab Yang, the General of the Air Force, who would ban all political parties and would rule more benevolently, relaxing some restrictions and opening the country up in comparison to the isolationism of the Popular Regime, which had made Dakata out to be an almost-international pariah. The Yang Gang would rule until 1976 when after a disastrous war with Xiaodong, Looj Vang, a member of the Yang Gang would commit a coup d’ etat and purge Suab and the Gang itself. Vang would rule the country for a combined sum of twelve years, focusing on economic development, infrastructure, electrification and international investment, bringing an increase in growth and living standards, constructing the first electric dam in the country, as well as pursuing closer relations with Senria, eventually becoming a founding member of COMSED.
While being brutal at the onset of the regime to the point of establishing work camps, reaching old age, the regime moderated and even allowed for elections in 1986, wherein the umbrella party Reawakening Front would win a crushing majority, albeit the opposition would also take seats. In 1987, following the death of Vang and internal squabbles and indecisiveness in the Awakening Front, a reformist minded palace coup would install a parliamentary republic after drafting a new constitution, now known as the National Law, with the first free elections taking place in 1989.

The country is a flawed democracy and has bulked the general trend of 'southern democracies' in Kylaris. Despite this, various factors, such as foreign influence, internal conflict and political infighting that is sometimes even marked by ethnic and religious violence threatens the stability of the country and its democracy. Being a member of COMSED, bordered by two influential ROSPO members, the country is in a tenuous defensive position and receives assistance from COMSED members ever since it's war with Xiaodong in the early seventies, with relations between Dakata and Ajadhaya, Xiaodong based on economic, not political necessity. Politically, the government and country is divided as politics and elections are divided on ethnoreligious lines, not political ones, with political parties being often politically vague with no firm ideological standing. Despite this, since the 2000s, more ideologically-coherent parties have formed. Divided by pro-minority and pro-majority, elections usually result in a 30/70 divide respectively as majority parties rush to see who can form a coalition first between the pro-majority parties as working with pro-minority parties is taboo, let alone creating a coalition with them. While in name the pro-minority parties support membership of COMSED, it is a common accepted idea that minority parties are pro-ROSPO as they are much more open to working with Xiaodong and Ajadhaya than majority parties and wish to flood in ROSPO investment.
Home to ~57,049,224 citizens per estimates, spanning x amount of km^2, it is one of the poorest countries in Kylaris due to it’s measly GDP per capita of just $ 1741.27, largely owing to it’s GDP of $ 90,472 million, with Dakata suffering from corruption, mismanagement and lack of education past primary school, with only ~40% of the population residing in urban centres.
Recently, drug use and growth has become a major problem after it's re-legalization following futile attempts to destroy it's production pre-1987, as growing marijuana and other narcotics is a profitable business and way to make a living in the country, with countries complaining of the drug flow, sometimes even withholding foreign investment if action is not taken.

Military Overview: The Armed Forces of Dakata form the backbone of the republics’ external security forces, formed in 1935 following the Great War and the Treaty of Keisi. The Armed Forces have ~55,000 personnel, 40,000 of which are in the Army, 15,000 in the Air Force. While an exclusively professional force, due to foreign & internal threats, Dakata maintains a ~100,000 volunteer force named the People’s Guard which mainly uses leftover and stockpiled weapons from the Army. While in the past, the military has taken on a role of active involvement in politics, since 1987, such instances have decreased and the military has taken on a role of an organ that is subservient to the civilian government. Currently, the Armed Forces of Dakata participate in international peackeeping missions and are dedicating to quelling an insurgency in the north of the country, receiving 3.2% of GDP spending due to a perceived threat from Ajahadya considering it's support for said insurgency. Being a member of COMSED, the Armed Forces also collaborate with COMSED member countries in defense policy and procurement.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people:
LGBT+ relationships, while perhaps not seen with rabid hate, are not seen as something acceptable. LGBT+ relationships are frowned upon, especially in public, and marriage between LGBT+ couples is practically banned in the country as the constitution enshrines marriage as between a man and a woman. While actions from progressive movements in the country, such as staging the first even Pride March in 2015 and petitions to governors, have given some hope for the LGBT+ community, the situation has barely changed in the country, with as of recent polling, only 28% of the population supporting some sort of arrangement for LGBT+ people to establish their relationships in the eye of the state.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one:
Satyism is recognized as the national religion and receives special protection and benefits, which results in it being expanded at the expense of minority religions. People who follow minority religious may sometimes be seen with distrust and suspicion as it is a common stereotype to assume that being apart of a certain ethnic or religious minority means to support a certain political party. It is to be said, however, that this is not universal and it could not be said that the majority has a flaming hate for minorities.
  • General population's view on atheism:
Indifference and surprise, albeit the whole country, according to census' is religious, at least in name.
  • General population's view on abortion:
While abortion is legal, it is frowned upon by the general populace, albeit understood.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s):
Race is not a problem in the country, albeit the same problems with religious affiliation arise with ethnic affiliation due to the support of Dakatan nationalism and it's use as a vehicle for a national identity in the country. People who belong to minority ethnic groups may sometimes be seen with distrust and suspicion as it is a common stereotype to assume that being apart of a certain ethnic or religious minority means to support a certain political party. It is to be said, however, that this is not universal and it could not be said that the majority has a flaming hate for minorities.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation:
As mentioned earlier, there is a general mistrust of minorities that has emerged in the process of consolidating the national identity, albeit discrimination based on ethnicity is banned, in practice it may occur when minorities apply for jobs or other things. Prejudice is more based on a persons' individual feelings, albeit minorities stereotypes exist in wider society and while minorities are not oppressed per se, they may be seen differently. Minorities feel ignored by the central government and feel as if their rights to be equals to other ethnic groups are taken away, while Dakatans distrust minorities because they do not embrace the national identity perhaps as openly and favor different domestic or political policies, believing that the government has gone too far in supporting Dakatans.

This distrust is mostly founded on the diametrically opposing interests of the majority that consist of Dakatans and those who identify as so and interests of the minorities, namely, the Xiaodongese and Himavantan minorities. These prejudices and problems exist due to a bad history between these countries and ethnic groups. With nationalist persecution of minorities during the dictatorial regimes, namely of the Popular Front and Yang Gang, minorities distrust the central government and call for more autonomy. The Dakatan majority, meanwhile, view themselves as the native people of their territory and feel that the minorities endanger their freedom, especially considering that Ajadhaya and Xiaodong are ROSPO members at conflict with Dakata, a COMSED member state. It is mostly a feeling that has risen out of policies taken during past empires and governments, as both feel the other endanger their independence, albeit it has, so far, not led to major outbursts of ethnic violence in the country since the 2000s.
  • View on immigration into country:
While Dakata is a net exporter, not net importer of migrants, society is accepting to migrants, as long as integration within the wider culture and society occurs and the immigrants renounce loyalty to their country of birth. However, migration from Xiaodong to Dakata is seen with suspicion due to existing prejudice and imperial past, as Xiaodongese investment, influece and migration is seen as a way to subjugate Dakata.
  • Women's Rights:
Discrimination based on sex is banned, but many of those outside of urban centers have families that follow traditional gender roles and are conservative in nature. It is also know that there is a pay gap between men and women, despite the law, and women are mostly unseen in politics, barring a few exceptions.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs:
Dakata is known as a drug-exporter country, as such, views on narcotics are positive or largely neutral, albeit hard drugs are illegal in the country. However, laws are not as strictly enforced outside of cities and towns unless special attention is brought, taking in the fact that most government organs in the country suffer from endemic corruption.

Other:
  • Factbook: Here is a Google Doc link that links to my currently built-up information and history of my nation, which will be posted in the respective iiwiki article that would be created post-acceptance.
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vlo ... sp=sharing
  • RP Preferences: I suppose I prefer news article writing and in regards to roleplay I may prefer diplomatic incidents, albeit I have not roleplayed in quite a while.
  • RP Samples:
    viewtopic.php?f=4&t=457929 (news post: 2) [Kuronija]
    viewtopic.php?f=5&t=426565 (roleplay post: 2) [Flauc]
I have also posted under the name 'Bahktar'.
  • RP Intentions: I intend to worldbuild and roleplay, if given the possibility, albeit I believe my roleplay skills are not that great in comparison. I mostly enjoy posting news articles and I like to worldbuild with other players. I especially would be interested in diplomatic incidents.
  • Primary/Other NS Nations: Flauc/Kuronija/Bahktar, but I don't really intend to use them for roleplay purposes anymore.
  • Any troubles with moderation?: No.
  • Anything else?: No.

National information
Official Name: Republic of Beladia
Shortened Name: Beladia
Requested Location: Image
Neighbouring Tsabara to the North.
Requested Population: 37,500,000
Culture: Middle Eastern (Semitic). Probably mostly Irfanic, but historical Sotarian (?) minority in the very north tip; maybe remaining Euclean populations from colonial times in some cites
  • Ethnicity: majority Beladi (closest real-world counterpart would be Arabs, I guess, but with the obvious influences), minority Arab and perhaps others (from my neighbour and/or from colonizers)
  • Religion: Irfani majority, minority Sotirian (divided between historical populations that evaded persecution in the north of the North and recentish from colonial times) and maybe a small Atudist minority
  • Languages: Beladi (national language), Badawiyan (widespread in some regions, not official), maybe Atudite and maybe some weird ass conlang that is an isolate and is spoken in a small area only (presumably not official); colonial language(s) probably not national, but official language)
Government Type: unitary “parliamentary” “democracy” with theocratic and tribal/factionalist elements
Head of State: tbd, presumably officially the same as head of government, but maybe there is a spiritual leader or one of the leaders of the traditional tribes is recognized as more important
Head of Government: tbd, but possibly a title of whatever “leader” means in Biladi anglicized, or just “leader of Biladia”
Requested GDP Per Capita: ca. $10,000? (to be discussed, I suppose)
National Overview: Beladia is a divided nation on many levels: economic development, religion, ethnolinguistics & I guess geography. While urban areas, especially on the coast and around the lower river valley/delta, are fairly well-developed, the hinterland is largely underdeveloped, especially in economy and infrastructure. Politics are notably corrupt and ethnic/religious groups are often played against one another. There is some unrest in parts of the country and the government’s neglect of the population’s needs paired with the view that the democratic system in its current form is broken will be grounds for future problems.
Military Overview: The Beladi military is used primarily domestically and for border protection. It is notably underfunded and, though I did not think of specific numbers, would be rather small for a nation its size. This might change slightly or less slightly depending on what my relations with Tsabara and with any hypothetical future neighbours end up being, but I generally imagine Beladia as a state with a relatively weak military.

    Social views:
    • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: general public: homophobia is common and there is a lack of knowledge of all letters after the G; legislation: homosexual relations or sodomy not specifically outlawed, but many representatives of the judiciary and executive are bigoted and thus LGBT people are at a disadvantage
    • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: a vocal bigoted violent minority and a silent majority
    • General population's view on atheism: less violent than towards people of other religions
    • General population's view on abortion: very pro-life, but many tolerate it for disabilities, rape and so on
    • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): ethnic groups: relatively harmonious, except where it coincides with religious boundaries, or with colonial cultures (disliked among nationalists especially); races: probably a lot of casual racism and bigotry (depends on how much other races would be directly involved during history)
    • Any big prejudices in your nation: towards people of colonial heritage (and the former colonizing countries), towards Solarians and to a lesser degree between Beladia 1/2/3 (coastal/hinterland/northern tip)
    • View on immigration into country: national trauma from colonialism and racism are fairly widespread
    • Women's Rights: officially equal (probably exceptions for some professions), but sexism is common
    • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: tobacco and alcohol use is heavily normalized with the exceptions of people who care a lot for health and religious fundamentalists; otherwise, heavy stigma and taboo

    Other:
    • Factbook: This will come soon.
    • RP Preferences: diplomatic or wbing disguised as roleplay from the perspective of newsposts
    • RP Samples: viewtopic.php?p=36956687#p36956687 viewtopic.php?p=36962765#p36962765
    • RP Intentions: mostly worldbuilding, definitely sperging out specific parts of it that noone cares about besides me :-P
    • Primary/Other NS Nations: Finstria, Similia, Tricladia
    • Any troubles with moderation? (If so, a link, please.): No.
    • Anything else?:

National information
Official Name: Republic of the Adésine | République du Adésine (Gaullican)| Jamhuri ya Adésine (Asili) | Repubulika y'u Adésine (Kirobyi) | iRiphabliki yomAdesine (Sisulu)
Shortened Name: Adésine
Requested Location: blue above rwizikuru
Requested Population: ~24 million
Culture: Based on Swahili and Rwanda-Rundi
  • Ethnicity: ~50% of the population are members of the Asili, analogous to Swahili. 20% of the population are Rubandan (Hutu/Tutsi), concentrated in the east. Another 10% are Sisulu, in the mountainous south-east, bordering Rwizikuru and Garambura. 15% are Njarendie, most of whom live in the Aserai Strip in the south-west of the country, bordering the Kingdom of Mabifia.
  • Religion: Catholic Sotrianity is popular among the Rubandan and Sisulu. The Irfanic faith is practised by the Njarendie. The Asili people are split almost equally between Sotrianity and Irfan. Traditional Fetishism and Animism are on the decline.
  • Languages: There are four official languages, Gaullican, Asili, Sisulu and Kirobyi. Gaullican serves as the lingua franca of the nation.
Government Type: Unitary Parliamentary Dominant-Party Republic
Head of State: Président Vincent Aphiwe Nombulelo
Head of Government: Premier Ministre Noël Kléber Abbas
    Requested GDP Per Capita: $6,000
    National Overview:
    • The areas of the Adésine have been part of the veRwizi Empire since TBD
    • 1644: Following the decline of the veRwizi Empire, local Karame Jamba declared the independence of the Adesine Region, establishing the Asili Kingdom.
    • 1651: The end of hostilities between the Asili Kingdom and the veRwizi Empire. Jamba now styled himself Mfalme, King.
    • 1654: Rubandans cross the river Adésine into the lands of the Asili Kingdom, conquering a small strip of land on the eastern bank.
    • 1660: Mfalme Jamba leads a final conquest of the south-east, conquering the local Sisulu tribes.
    • 1668: Gaullican trade settlement of Port Gaspareux is formed on the mouth of the river Adésine. The Mfalme is keen on trade with the Eucleans. Mfalme Jamba subjugated the pygmoid peoples of the Southern Highlands, selling them into slavery.
    • 1705: Gaullican missionaries arrive in Rubandan lands.
    • 1712: Several fortified Gaullican settlements on the coast are attacked by the new Mfalme Musa, who wishes to stop the conversion of his population to Sotrianity.
    • 1714: Rubandans, equipped by the Gaullicans, launch incursions into the Asili Kingdom. The capital of the Asili Kingdom, Marundi, is besieged. Gaullican-Rubandan forces capture the capital by the end of the year. Musa is killed by his bodyguards, and his cousin Keambiroiro is crowned Mfalme. Keambiroiro offers concessions to the Rubandans for peace; he offers lands along the Adésine river for their loyalty. Keambiroiro also allows Gaullicans to build trading posts further upriver and inland.
    • 1748: Catholic missions open up in the Asili Kingdom, with the blessing of the now elderly Keambiroiro.
    • 1751: The majority Irfanic population in the south-west revolt against the Asili Kingdom, whom they view as growing weak and caving into the Euclean powers and their Sotrian religion. The Njarendie target Rubandan villages along the Adésine river. The Irfanic Mfalme's forces unite with the Sotrian Rubandans and subjugate the Aserai strip.
    • 1788: Rubandans clash with Asili tribal leaders over the diversion of the Adésine river for irrigation. This violence grows into full-grown rebellion. With the Slave trade having been abolished in the prior years, the Asili Kingdom's financial deficit increased significantly and was unable to quell the violence. Mfalme Kamari asks for assistance from local Gaullicans. With their assistance, the Mfalme puts down the Rubandan rebellion, at great cost to the Kingdom.
    • 1789: In return for their assistance, Mfalme Kamari awards Gaullica with charters for larger tracts of land.
    • 1800: The lavish lifestyle of Mfalme Kamari almost bankrupts the Kingdom. As an attempt to gain a cash windfall, the Mfalme authorises the revocation of land and property from the Ulama. The Irfanic Asili and Njarendie population revolts.
    • 1810s ish: Due to the weakening of the Ulama and traditional heirarchical structures, many Rubandans by now have converted to Catholic Sotrianity.
    • 1814: The Irfanic Revolt ends when Kamari is deposed. A major rift forms between the Sotrian and Irfanic Asili communities and the Asili Kingdom doesn't recover their financial loses, resulting in a fracturing of the country based on tribal lines.
    • 1850: Sotrian Asilis, which now outnumber the Irfanic followers, revolt against the Irfanic elite, with the support of Gaullican troops.
    • 1856: The Gaullicans installed a Sotrian Asili as the new Mfalma, Eli, also known as Eli the Usurper. Renamed the Adésine Protectorate, it formed the eastern part of the Adésine colony in Bahia.
    • 1899: The Second Irfanic Revolt occurs over the growth of Sotrianity in the region and marginalization of the Irfanic community. The Adésine Protectorate and Gaullica put down the revolt.
    • 1935: With the defeat of Gaulica, the Adésine Protectorate was transferred to Werania. A long war for independence followed, lead by the Front Populaire de l'Adésine.
    • 1949: Independence is secured for the République du Adésine, recognized by Werania.
    • 1954: After several years of economic stagnation, the République du Adésine and the Republic of Rwizikuru formed the United Bahian Republic (subject to discussion)
    • 1964: Following years of disagreement over foreign and domestic policy, and the crowning of the President of Rwizikuru, the République du Adésine withdraws from the UBR. The Front Populaire de l'Adésine wins the elections, and the Sotrian Rubandan Paul Rwigara elected as President. His running mate, an Irfanic Asili, Abu Mohemmed Abu, is chosen to be Prime Minister.
    • 1966: President Rwigara and Prime Minister Abu have a falling out after Rwigara accused Abu of plotting to overthrow the government. Abu and his followers retreat southwards, towards the border of Rwizikuru and the TBD Strip, where they receive shelter and support from the Irfanic population. This begins the Adésine Civil War, between the largely Sotrian Rwigarans and the Irfanic Abuites.
    • 1970: Abuite forces seize the largely Rubandan river-side city of Kirambo. 90,000 civilians are massacred over the coming weeks. President Rwigara responds by executing 98 members of Abu's immediate and distant family. Following the capture of Kirambo, the conflict becomes a stalemate.
    • 1980: After years of negotiations and foreign support from TBD, Abu Mohammed Abu and newly-elected President Jean Uwaku sign the TO-BE-NAMED Accords. Abuite forces would disarm and acknowledge the legitimacy of the central government. In return, they would all be pardoned and receive government pensions. This, however, struck a nerve among the Sotrian population, who viewed this as the Abuites getting away with the genocide that was perpetrated against the Sotrian population. During the Adésine Civil War, roughly 400,000 people were killed. Feelings of animosity between Sotrian and Irfan peoples exist to this day.
Military Overview: The Armed Forces of the Adésine (Forces Armées du Adésine [FAdA]) consists of the Army, Air Force and Navy. It receives 4.5% of the annual budget. It maintains a small, well-equipped force of professional soldiers, tasked with protecting the sovereignty of the Adésine. The army has three main formations: the Chasseurs; elite light infantry trained in heliborne and airborne operations in jungle environments, Cuirassiers; armoured units, and Fusiliers; the traditional line infantry. Below is a list of active units:
      ACTIVE
    • 1e Régiment de Chasseurs Parachutistes
    • Régiment de Blindée
    • 11e Régiment de Fusiliers
    • 12e Régiment de Fusiliers
    • Régiment de Gardes
    Social views:
    • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: The LGBT community in Adésine is largely underground, though urbanized areas are generally more tolerant. Article 33c bans male-on-male intercourse of any kind but is no longer enforced.
    • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Religion plays a large role in the identity politics of the nation, and numerous conflicts between the Sotrian and Irfanic populations have broken out.
    • General population's view on atheism: Atheism is generally not accepted by the Adésine community, though anti-discrimination laws have been implemented to prevent prejudice based on religious beliefs.
    • General population's view on abortion: Abortion is legal under specific circumstances, ie. before the third trimester. Abortion is generally frowned upon.
    • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): The Asili were the native population of the land. Other cultural groups moved into the region over the years, often leading to conflict. The largest conflict occurred between the Rubandans and the Njarendie, and both view each other negatively. Sisulu and Njarendie people are often regarded as foreigners. The relationship between the Asili and Rubandans are strained; the latter having pushed the former out of the fertile areas near the Adésine river.
    • Any big prejudices in your nation: In general, Sotrian and Irfanic populations are at odds, leading to sectarian violence.
    • View on immigration into country: Immigration into and out of Adésine in tightly controlled. Illegal immigrants have been deported to their country of origin if they do not meet "societal standards". The border between the Adésine and Mabifia is more porous, due to a lack of government presence in the area.
    • Women's Rights: Women enjoy the same rights as men
    • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Alcohol and tobacco are popular in the Adésine, though measures have been put into place to prevent a culture of smoking and alcoholism. In the TBD Strip, alcohol is banned by the local community.

National information
Official Name: The Caluchian Republic (Estmerish), Republika Kaluchiana (Bahiani, aka Caluchian Creole)
Repubblica Caluciana (Vespasian), Mapu Caleuche* (Itaheuchan)
*translates to “land of the transformed people” in Itahuechan (notMapuche), referring to alliance of the freed slaves, escaped slaves and native peoples that overthrew the colonial regime. Itaheuche is a conjunction of Itahue, meaning pastureland, and che, meaning people, referring to the Itahueche’s homeland on the hills and plains of the Caluchian interior. I’m using https://www.interpatagonia.com/mapuche/dictionary.html for Mapudungan words/place names, but if someone has a better or more exhaustive source I’d be much obliged.
Shortened Name: Caluchia
Requested Location: Northeast of Satucin in Asteria Inferior, along the coast, with a belt of inland hills, followed by a mountain range to the south of the hill country and a large region of plains beyond it. Extent and shape of borders very negotiable. Something like this, maybe? https://imgur.com/a/EOJfYqn
Requested Population: 28 million (negotiable)

Culture:
  • Ethnicity:
    Ethnic Groups: Bahiano (Bahio-Asterian) (33%), Meticcio (Mixed Race) (40%), Ucliano (Post-Revolution Eucleo-Asterians) (12%), Itahueche (7%)(!Mapuche), Macotana, (3%), Other* (6%)
    *Mostly recent Coian immigrants
  • Religion: Bahian animism, Caluchian syncretic Sotirianity, Sotirian Catholicism, indigenous religions
  • Languages: Bahiani (Caluchian Creole), Vespasian, Itaheuchan

Government Type:
Federal semi-presidential constitutional republic
Head of State: President (Presidente): Claudio Montanari
Head of Government: First Senator (Primo di Senato): Edoardo Pastore
Requested GDP Per Capita: $15,000, but the income distribution is pretty unequal, so this is skewed upwards. Negotiable either direction. Caluchia is intended to be an emerging economy. Significantly wealthier than IRL Haiti, but not as wealthy as IRL Argentina or Chile.

National Overview:
Pre-Revolutionary History:
Before the arrival of Eucleans in the Asterias, modern day Caluchia was inhabited by two major indigenous cultures: The (notMapuche), north of the Sierra Bianca mountains, in the hill country and the fertile coastal plain, and the Macotana nomads, savanna dwellers south of the mountains. Within (notMapuche) culture, the Picunche people of the coastal plain were sedentary, and relied mainly on agriculture and fishing, cultivating maize, cassava, legumes, and other foodstuffs. The hill-dwelling Itaheuche were relied mainly on a mix of agriculture, llama husbandry, hunting and gathering, and were semi-nomadic. The Macotana hunted and gathered on the savannas beyond the mountains, and had no fixed settlements. Both the Picunche and the Itaheuche produced silverwork, and elaborate textiles, and both were known to build earthworks and defensive fortifications to defend against rival communities.
Poveglian explorers first arrived in Caluchia in 1552. Initially trading with Caluchia’s indigenous population, Vespasian settlement led to the spread the horse, the cow, the sheep, and metal tools throughout Picunche and Itaheuche populations, beginning a slow shift in the interior from hunting and gathering to herding. In 1556, Poveglian settlers established the colony of Francescia on the Caluchian coast, establishing trade relations with the Picunche and founding the port city of San Matteo. The arrival of Eucleans began the slow diffusion of horses, sheep, and cattle into the Caluchian interior, which would eventually lead to the widespread integration of horsemanship into Itaheuche culture. The arrival of the Poveglians also introduced smallpox and other Euclean diseases, resulting in what the Itaheuche call The Great Dying. Both inland and coastal settlements were quickly depopulated, weakening indigenous society and leaving them vulnerable to what would happen next.
As Etrurian settlement on the coasts expanded, relations between the Picunche and the settlers grew increasingly tense. Vespasian soldiers of fortune discovered and coveted Picunche silverwork, and Vespasian settlers desired native-occupied farmland. Vespasian settlers, finding some Picunche farming towns depopulated by the Great Dying, settled in the abandoned houses and robbed Picunche graves for supplies, outraging the living Picunche. Finally, Poveglia's small population left the settlers shorthanded, and Vespasian planters saw the native population as a potential captive labor force. This rise in tensions culminated in 1559 in what the Vespasians call the First Francesciani War, and the Itaheuche call the Butcher’s War, a protracted conflict between the settlers, and the Picunche coalition as well as some allied Itaheuche forces. Between Vespasian attempts to capture and enslave Picunche added injury to the insult already done to the Picunche by Vespasiani graverobbing, and led directly to open war between settlers and natives. After three years of brutal, grinding warfare between the settlers, in which many Vespasian colonists and even more Picunche were slain, the colonists’ steel weapons and cavalry began to tell against a Picunche populace severely weakened by the Great Dying. Some Picunche were taken as slaves and concubines, but most refused to submit to the Euclean conquerers even in defeat, and thus were either massacred by Vespasian troops, or forced into the interior. Those who escaped inland were absorbed into the Itaheuche population.
Poveglian attempts to conquer the le Colline Rossa, the vast and rugged hill country of the Caluchian interior, were largely unsuccessful. The unfamiliar and harsh terrain, the semi-nomadic nature of the inland Itaheuche, and the spread of horses and Euclean weaponry to the native population gave the Itaheuche a significant advantage in their wars with the Vespasiani. Meanwhile, the colony’s reliance on slave labor kept the white Francesciani population low, preventing them from massing a force large enough to successfully storm le Colline Rossa. These circumstances allowed Itaheuche troops to fight Francesciani forces to a draw in both the Second and Third Francesciani Wars, in 1574 and 1576, respectively. This resulted in a fragile détente, in which Vespasian homesteaders traded with some inland Itaheuche tribes and fought others, often trading with and fighting the same tribe in different years. On Euclean maps, the inland hills and plains were part of the colony and under Poveglian dominion, but the reality on the ground was much less cut and dry.
After the First Francesciani War, the Poveglians found themselves in possession of a vast swathe of highly fertile but uninhabited farmland. Initially, the settlers focused on homesteading and food crops, but this failed to generate enough revenue to satisfy the colony’s merchant investors back in Poveglia. The introduction of lucrative cash crops like tobacco, sugar, and coffee, and cotton, all of which thrived in Caluchia, gave the colonists a way out of their financial dilemma. Sugar in particular was very profitable, and would go on to be the main engine of the colonial economy. This generated an insatiable thirst for labor in the colony, exacerbated by the mother country's relatively small population base. Having driven out the Itaheuche, the Vespasian colonists first turned to indentured servitude, but when the first enslaved Bahians arrived in San Matteo in 1581, there was no turning back. Poveglian merchants and colonial planters grew rich off of the Francesciani plantations, and chattel slavery in what Caluchia along with their bank accounts. By 1630, the Francescia colony was thoroughly established as an export-oriented slave society. The plantation economy would persist, digesting one generation of brutalized and overworked slaves and chewing up the next, for another century and a half. Events back in Etruria shifted the ownership of the colony between different Vespasian states over the decades, but particularly after the loss of Marirana, maintaining the Francesciani cash cow was always among the first priorities of any Etrurian state that came to hold Poveglia and its merchants. Over time, the Francesciani authorities allowed some freedmen and meticcio to move into the le Colline Rossa (Estmerish: the Red Hills, the Vespasian name for Caluchia’s rugged interior), hoping that they would erode Itaheuche power, and if all else failed, the Itahueche warriors would be killing Bahians rather than Vespasians. However, these new cavalcanti, the mixed race and Bahio-Asterian horsemen of le Colline Rossa, developed a cordial trading relationship with the Itahueche villages instead. This further marked the hill country as beyond the control of the San Matteo government. However, the steady stream of mutton, wool, hides, and other goods that the cavalcanti brought down from le Colline Rossa meant that the colonial elite in essence benefited economically from the cavalcante economy, and colonial authorities largely turned a blind eye to their activities. Similarly, planters and their merchant backers had by then realized that le Colline Rossa were unsuitable for plantation agriculture, and thus not worth the time and effort to subjugate. For the duration of the colonial period, Francesciani knowledge of Caluchia did not extend beyond the mountains. Authorities in San Matteo would not discover the safe route through the Sierra Biancas at la Passa Vittoria until twelve years after the Revolution.
In colonial Francescia, the Vespasian ruling class cemented a racial hierarchy. Etruriani, or white Vespasians born in Etruria, formed the top echelon of colonial society. Below them, the creolo, or white Vespasians born in the colonies, formed a less powerful but still wealthy and privileged class. Below the creolo were the meticcio, encompassing Bahio-Eucleans and Picuncho-Eucleans, many of whom were freeborn landowners, but who were forever relegated to a lower social standing than the white population. At the bottom rung of the social order were the nero, or enslaved Bahians, who formed the vast majority of the colonial population, and whose backbreaking and deadly work on the plantations made the colony profitable for the etruriani and creolo merchants and planters.
Given the awful conditions on the plantations, escape attempts were common, and escaped slaves or chilombiano congregated in chilombi, fortified settlements in le Colline Rossa beyond the reach of the colonial authority.

The Caluchian Revolution (content warning: violence and torture):
In 1790, revolution rocked Etruria. Seeing Marirana’s prosperity and power since independence, and resentful of the continued domination of the tiny etruriani minority, a creolo population inspired by the winds of change blowing from Euclea began to agitate for independence. This irked the free meticci population, who were very clearly left out of the creolo’s dreams of statehood, leading to street clashes between creolo and meticcio agitators. In 1791, the slaves revolted in several western plantations, but the revolt was brutally suppressed, and the rebellious slaves were tortured to death. However, as events spiraled out of control in San Matteo, and a creolo provisional government declared an independent Republic of Francescia, stirrings began out in the provinces. On midnight of August 3rd, 1792, the famous Terzo di Agosto, the great Caluchian slave revolt began. Padre Celestino, a syncretic Sotirian priest and a chilombiano spiritual leader, organized a coordinated uprising on the eastern plantations. By noon, thousands of armed slaves were mobilized and on the march, killing plantation owners and overseers, freeing fellow slaves, and seizing food stores as well as weapons and ammunition. Celestino’s revolt raged on until September, when a detachment of 3,000 Francesciani troops arrived from the capital to put down the rebellion. The slave army broke and fled under sustained volley fire from the regulars, and Padre Celestino and seven hundred escaped slaves were captured, while the rest of the army melted away into the night. Colonel Benito Abate, the commanding officer, had orders from the provisional government in San Matteo to give no quarter to the captured enemy, and use maximum force to suppress the rebellion. Thus, Abate rounded up all of the prisoners except Padre Celestino and ten of his officers, and had them executed by firing squad and their bodies hung from nearby trees as a grisly example to the enslaved population. Padre Celestino himself was beaten and tortured by Abate’s men over the course of the next several hours, both as example to other slaves, and an unsuccessful attempt to force him to reveal the names of co-conspirators and the specific locations of his chilombo and other major chilombi. In, the morning, the Coronel ordered that the hands, feet, nose, and genitals of the ten officers be cut off, and that they be allowed to bleed to death. Abate forced Padre Celestino to watch his men die, and had him burned alive, before sending detachments of regulars out to track down the escaped slaves who had fled from the battle the previous night. It seemed like the eastern revolt, like the western one, had been brutally but successfully suppressed.
Throughout September 1792, the Francesciani were forced to put down repeated uprisings and mass escapes all across plantation country, killing or recapturing thousands of escaping slaves but never quite stabilizing the country. Francesciani regulars were unable to recapture large portion of the escapees, who seemed to have simply disappeared. The answer to the conundrum, of course, is the chilombo, or more properly the chilombos. In the hill country beyond the fertile coastline, among the Itahueche villages and the cavalcanti, the San Matteo government knew that landscape had for centuries hidden thousands of escaped slaves. Neither the cavalcanti, who were loyal to nobody but their wallets, nor the Itahueche, who still actively fought Francesciani forces that ventured into their lands, lifted a finger to turn them in. The final attempt to snuff out the chilombos was in 1744, when a force of a thousand Francesciani mercenaries marched into le Colline Rossa and never returned. Itaheuche oral histories suggest that these expeditionary forces were routinely wiped out by combined forces of Itaheuche cavalry and Chilombi soldiers, and none were left alive to bring word back to San Matteo. Among the chilombos, the first seeds of the Bahiano identity, now that of the majority of Caluchians, began to take shape.
Alessandro Buonarroti, or Il Volpone, was a chilombiano who had from the sugar plantations near San Matteo seven years earlier. After Padre Celestino and his 700 were killed by the Francesciani, Buonarroti led a force of armed chilombiani down from the hill country to come to the aid of the rebellious slaves, and personally founded the renowned Army of the Freedmen, or Armata di Liberti. Genereal Buonarroti himself would be nicknamed “Il Volpone” by the planters, intended as a mark of dishonor due to his use of ambushes and asymmetric warfare, but claimed as a badge of honor by Bahio-Caluchians ever since. It was Buonarroti who first formed the longstanding alliance between the Bahiano population and the Itahueche, as well as the free meticcio and bahiani cavalcanti of le Colline Rossa. These alliances led directly to the formation of what the Francesciani dubbed Il Legione di Infierno: a mixed force of Itahuechen cavalry and bahiani and meticcio cavalcanti who struck terror into the hearts of colonial troops. Buonarroti died on March 1st, 1796 the Battle of San Matteo, felled by a Francesciani cannonball. His death left a power vacuum in the Armata di Liberti, a power vacuum that would tear the country apart for the next several years.
When San Matteo finally fell, and the looting had died down, the surviving revolutionary generals formed a provisional government headquartered in the Palazzo Centrale, where they debated the future of the country. Three factions emerged from this Conference of San Matteo, which would divide the nation into warring camps. The first faction was Nationalist camp, led by General Carlo Fabbro, which argued that the country should be a unitary nationalist state, purged of other racial elements and following the one true Sotirian Catholic faith. The second faction was the Reformist camp, led by General Bruno Grimaldi, a protégé of General Buonarroti. This faction argued that the first priority should be to redistribute lands equitably among the freedmen. Finally, the third faction was the Liberal camp, led by General Antonio Amadeo Barbuto, who believed that the main priority was to stabilize the country, restore order, and protect private property. During the sack of San Matteo, Barbuto’s troops fired on freedmen who were looting the great houses of the Vespasiani and the meticcio, endearing him to the meticcio elite. The three leading generals struggled to find accord, and the conference became increasingly heated until talks broke down three days later. Within a week, General Grimaldi was dead under suspicious circumstances, and Generals Fabbro and Barbuto were openly at war with each other. In the ensuing three years of civil war, Barbuto slowly but surely gained the upper hand. Barbuto utilized the wealth and political clout of his meticcio and creolo backers to secure superior supplies, and co-opted both the Reformist and Itaheuche officer corps, both of which feared Fabbro’s Nationalism more than Barbuto’s Conservatism.
After the last of the Fabbro loyalists were defeated on the battlefield and Barbuto’s hired assassins successfully murdered Fabbro himself, the stage was set for the birth of the First Caluchian Republic. The name Caluchia itself originated in the Itahueche word “Caleuche,” meaning “the transformed people,” which the framers of the constitution saw as an auspicious name for the new country. On paper, the 1799 constitution guaranteed rights and freedoms for all, and established a federal presidential system with a unicameral legislature. However, with Barbuto’s Liberals ascendant, few attempts were made to distribute political and economic power equitably, and suffrage was restricted to property-holding men. In essence, only the meticcio and those lucky government allies who received former etruriani and creolo lands were given the vote in the early days of the republic. On the other hand, the Itaheuche were offered significant autonomy and self-government under the federal system, one of the first arrangements of its kind in Asteria Inferior.

Post-Revolutionary History:

The First Caluchian Republic, 1799-1931:
Under the new order, the plantation system in Caluchia was largely kept intact. The new government’s attachment to the upper classes left few economic opportunities for most Bahiano freedmen besides working as hired farmhands on meticcio-owned plantations. What redistribution occurred mainly benefited Barbuto loyalists within the military. This essentially resulted in a semi-feudal system in which wealthy landowners demanded that Bahiano tenants produce a certain proportion of coffee, cotton, or sugarcane in return for the right to farm their own subsistence plots. Thus, post-revolutionary Caluchia managed to maintained a lucrative cash crop sector without slavery, but simultaneously did not allow most Caluchians much opportunity for advancement, and stunted long-term economic growth. The country significantly diversified its cash crop production towards coffee, indigo, cotton, and rice, and placed steadily less emphasis on sugar, as Caluchia found itself less able to compete with foreign producers on the sugar than it was before the revolution

In 1811, Leopoldo Di Mercurio, a meticcio explorer, set out on an expedition to explore the Sierra Bianca range. With the help of Itaheuche and cavalcanti guides, Di Mercurio and his men went on to chart the first viable route through the mountains to the Grande Pianura of the interior in Summer of 1812. Di Mercurio named the route la Passa Vittoria after his wife back in San Matteo. Thus began the Golden Age of the Cavalcanti, and the cattle boom in Caluchia. The cavalcanti adventurers and their cattle herds quickly came into conflict with the Macotan people. The introduction of the horse to the Grande Pianura had destabilized Macotani society, and the roving bands of Macotani riders on the savannas were hostile the Caluchian interlopers. This clash resulted in the Pianura Wars, a series of skirmishes between encroaching calvacanti cattlemen and the Macotani tribes, which would continue until the San Matteo government took full control of the Grande Pianura in the 1850s.

Over the course of the 19th century, Reformists did manage to partially expand the suffrage, lowering property requirements slightly, but any direct attempts to overturn the neo-feudal status quo were frustrated by the meticcio-military alliance. Le Colline Rossa remained largely outside of government control until the 1840s, when railway construction brought the region more cohesively into the Caluchian state. However, the Itahueche farmers and herders were relatively well respected and well treated, given their constitutionally guaranteed autonomy and their military aid to first Buonarrati and then Barbuto. Longstanding relations between the cavalcanti and the Itaheuche allowed the two groups to coexist peacefully in le Colline Rossa. Some Itahueche converted to Sotirianity, but many maintained their native religion. The Itahueche developed their own alphabet in the 1820s, allowing for more accurate written adaptations of the Itahuechan oral tradition. Between 1853 and 1855, Caluchian businessmen and Euclean investors financed the construction of a railway through la Passa Vittoria, resulting in a huge influx of Bahiani peasant homesteaders into the Grande Pianura, undermining the feudal cash crop economy. As the cost of repelling Matocani raids mounted, and expeditionary forces from the capital failed to defeat the nomads in open conflict, President Modesto Silvestri decided to treat with the tribes. Itaheucho-Caluchiani envoys, chosen due to historical trading relationships between the Matocani and the Itaheuche, made peaceful contact with a large Matocani band on the banks of the Fiume Torbido. By the 1860s, Caluchian troops and diplomats and their new Matocani allies had brought the rest of the tribal leaders into the fold, and defeated those that refused to negotiate. In 1869, the Treaty of Fonte Fresca officially integrated the remaining Matocani into the Republic as citizens, and protected their hunting and grazing rights in return for Matocani acceptance of San Matteo’s authority. By 1871, Caluchia existed within its modern-day borders. The discovery and colonization of the Grande Pianura finally reinvigorated Euclean immigration to Caluchia, which had fallen to near zero after the revolution, and the cavalcanti soon found themselves working alongside a new influx of white immigrants. While welcomed with open arms by the government, who were desparate to kickstart economic growth in Caluchia, the new immigrants were viewed with deep suspicion by the Bahiani for the first several decades. However, as memories of slavery faded, and many of the poorer white immigrants or Ucliani began to integrate culturally into Caluchia and found themselves largely living and working alongside Bahiani, intermarriage rates between Bahiano and Ucliano populations increased dramatically. Thus, the population of Nuovo Meticcio, or new mixed race Caluchians, began to vastly outnumber the wealthier Old Meticcio, complicating the previous color hierarchy and further eroding neo-feudalism in Caluchia.

The Satucinais Occupation, 1931-1935

Caluchia sided with the Grand Alliance, and was invaded and occupied by Satucin during the Great War, but a prolonged Caluchian resistance movement ultimately triumphed as Satucin itself became increasingly unstable and the Grand Alliance steadily pushed the Entente out of the Asterias.

[Will be fleshed out later when we update the region-wide history of the Great War]

The Second Caluchian Republic, 1935-19XX

The Great War upended Caluchian society. The resistance movement was heavily reliant on the Bahiani peasantry, Ucliani immigrants, and the Nuovo Meticcio, all of whom grew increasingly frustrated with their marginalization by the Old Meticcio plantation class. By the 1930s, Similarly, the First Republic’s failure to defend the country and the destabilization inherent in years of occupation further undermined the old regime’s authority. Thus, the Second Caluchian Republic was characterized by the increasing influence of social liberal, socialist, and councilist movements, as well as the return of a Fabbroist Nationalist faction on the right, now dubbed the National Party. Ultimately, many free market liberals and social conservatives became increasingly fearful of wholesale land and wealth redistribution, and the establishment of a councilist state in Caluchia.

The Fierro Dictatorship, also known as the Sotirian State of Caluchia 19XX-1981:
In 19XX, Caluchians, frustrated with the lack of economic and social progress and persistently high levels of economic inequality, elected a coalition of socialist and councilist parties in a close election
-Religious conservatives and free market liberals viewed the results of this election as illegitimate, as did Caluchia’s pre-war trading partners and the international business community as a whole. The Old Meticcio planters and the new rich of the Grande Pianura both feared the loss of their political and economic influence, and became increasingly reactionary. In 19XX, the military and National Party militias, led by General Berto Fierro, stormed the Palazzo Centrale and overthrew the elected government. Post-coup, Fierro established the Sotirian State of Caluchia, which he ruled as President for Life until 1975.
-The Sotirian State established a program of Sotirianization, attempting to stamp out both socialism and religious syncretism, and attempting to Vespasianize the Itahueche by force, prohibiting the Itahueche language from being taught in schools and arresting Itahueche religious leaders. Socialists, social liberals, non-Sotirians, and LGBT+ Caluchians were “disappeared” en mass, their graves only discovered after the end of the dictatorship and the disestablishment of the secret police in 1981. Under the iron first of Fierro, Caluchia underwent a process of industrialization, constructing new factories, hydroelectric dams, roads, railroads, and other industrial projects. This helped the regime maintain power and gin up popular support, but as ever benefited the wealthy and powerful more than anyone else.
-In 1975, Fierro’s son Carlo took power in accordance with his father’s wishes, with the backing of conservatives, the military, the church, the business community. Carlo Fierro, however, was not the man his father was, and ran the country into the ground. His extravagant lifestyle, licentiousness, and impiety lost him the support of the Sotirian church, leading Carlo Fierro to significantly expand his father’s social purges. The loss of official church backing for the regime dealt a significant blow to the ruling National Party’s popularity. In and beyond le Colline Rossa, the Itaheuche, finally pushed beyond their endurance, began a campaign of militant resistance that drew significant amounts of military resources away from the capital and the other coastal provinces. Democratic and socialist resistance groups began to infiltrate the lower ranks of the military, joining the army themselves and clandestinely recruiting disaffected soldiers and even officers to their cause.

The September Rising
In 1980, massive protests and acts of civil disobedience began to crop up across Caluchia. The Mothers of the Disappeared, a movement against the Fierro regime’s social purges, flared up in the capital with the backing of the Sotirian church.
-In August 1980, opposition leaders sounded out General Giuseppe Di Pasqua, commander of a large military garrison about 50 miles from San Matteo, who they believed to have democratic sympathies.
-In September of 1981, the Itaheuche and their Bahiano allies in the le Colline Rossa staged an outright insurrection against the government, forcing the regime to send even more troops into the interior. Disloyal elements within the government arranged events so that many of the regiments left in the capital were those filled with and led by resistance infiltrators.
-At 2 AM on September 15th, most of the Fonte Fresca garrison mutinied and rebel militias seized control of the largest city in the Grande Pianura region, defeating both a small force of loyal regulars and a larger force of National Party paramilitaries. By noon on the 16th, almost all of the Grande Pianura declared itself in open revolt against the San Matteo government. This forced Fierro to send even more loyal troops away from the capital, and stretched the regime’s resources dangerously thin.
-On September 18th, the opposition staged peaceful protests throughout coastal Caluchia. Bahiani peasants and San Matteans alike marched on the Palazzo Centrale. A flailing Carlo Fierro tried to call in reinforcements from the provinces, but opposition agents had cut the phone lines in and out of the capital that morning with the collusion of subversive elements in the army
-At 3:00 PM, Fierro ordered the San Matteo garrison to leave their barracks and forcibly disperse the protesters. About 2/3 of the garrison’s commanders did not respond to orders from the Palazzo Central. Troops opened fire on the protest march and the situation turned violent. Seven hundred protestors were killed, and a thousand were wounded. Rebels began barricading the Quarto Grigio, a dense warren of small streets and packed apartments home to the majority of San Matteo’s population. This forced troops loyal to the regime to call in artillery and air support, and lead to running street battles throughout the city.
-At 3:30 PM, General Giuseppe Di Pasqua declared himself in revolt via a live radio broadcast, denouncing Fierro’s depravity and openly siding the rebels in San Matteo
-At 3:45 PM, air force jets loyal to Di Pasqua engaged with pilots still loyal to the Sotirian State over San Matteo
-At 3:55 PM the rest of the capital garrison finally left their barracks much to the delight of Carlo Fierro, but raised the Republican flag and opened fire on loyal troops assaulting the barricades in the Quarto Grigio.
-At 5:30 PM, troops loyal to Di Pasqua besieged the Palazzo Central, entering the palace proper at 6:00 and fighting their way to Fierro’s rooms resisted by loyalist soldiers and the Guardia di Palazzo. Once all resistance was subdued, rebel soldiers loyal to Di Pasqua reached Fierro’s rooms, and finding the door locked, kicked down the door, only to find the young dictator himself cowering in a closet. At 6:45, Fierro was dragged to the palace court yard, where he was summarily executed by firing squad. Historians theorize that Di Pasqua had ordered the dictator’ execution to prevent his own crimes earlier in the regime from being exposed in what would be a blockbuster trial, but it is impossible to say for certain. Rebel forces broadcast the news publicly on all radio stations, and most of the remaining loyalist garrisons had either mutinied or been forced to surrender by the morning of the 19th.

After the fall of the dictatorship, Di Pasqua declared himself head of the transitional government. A delegation of Sotirian clergy and Commonwealth of Nations envoys arrived in Caluchia to speak to Di Pasqua and encourage him to manage a responsible democratic transition. Street protests across the country continued for the next month as Di Pasqua and the foreign delegation sat holed up in the Palazzo Central. A week after the fall of the dictatorship, Di Pasqua’s troops forcibly entered the headquarters of the Secret Police, forcibly disbanding it. Two days later, the leaders of the opposition showed themselves publicly, and joined Di Pasqua and the delegation in the Palazzo Central. Two months after the fall of the dictatorship, Di Pasqua voluntarily stepped down as head of the transitional government and was secretly pardoned for any crimes he may or may not have committed under the dictatorship, preferring to retire an internationally celebrated hero than rule as another Fierro and see Caluchia’s economy collapse under the weight of international sanctions. Under the protection of Republican troops and rebel militias, Caluchians nationwide elected delegates to a new constitutional convention. By the end of 1981 the Third Caluchian Republic had been established and a new constitution promulgated, expanding on the bill of rights from the First and Second Republics and wholly restructuring the military command structure to constrain its power. The 1981 Constitution also reduced the powers of the presidency and increased legislative authority to provide greater checks on executive power. Caluchia was reformed as a federal parliamentary democracy, and free elections were held on January 2nd, 1982, for the first time in XX years.

Modern Caluchia:
Of late, Caluchia has entered another period of political instability. After the dictatorship, the country experienced a long period of economic growth and heightened immigration levels, particularly from Bahia and Coius. This drastically improved the lot of the common citizen and led to relatively widespread prosperity. Since 2010, however, Caluchia has experienced a moderate slowdown in overall growth and a more significant slowdown in wage growth. Poor and middle class Caluchians increasingly look askance at the upper classes, much like they did during the Second Republic, noting that the fortunes of the wealthiest Caluchians continue to grow ever larger even as the country as a whole struggles. Since the end of the dictatorship, Caluchia's constitution was restructured such that Caluchian elections are held based on Ranked Choice Voting, leading to a proliferation of smaller political parties that have tended to coalesce into two major coalitions. On the one hand, there is Il Coalizione Moderato, a center right coalition led by Il Partito Liberale, or the Liberal Party, which favors free trade and free market economics. The current Caluchian president is a member of Il Partito Liberale. On the other, there is Il Coalizione Popular on the center left, led by Il Partito Laburista, or the Labor Party, which is a center-left coalition of social democrats and social liberals. The current First Senator is a member of Il Partito Laburista, whose coalition currently controls the Senate. Caluchia has experienced a five year period of divided government: given the results of the last election, Caluchians seem dissatisfied with Liberale leadership, but so far the leadership of Il Partito Laburista has proved unable to capitalize on the failures of its old rival. Thus, the current political moment of gridlock and economic stagnation has seen the sudden rise of Il Partito Comunal, councilist movement, on the far left, as well as return of Il Partito Nazionale on the far right, thought to be effectively dead since the days of the dictatorship. Comunalista politicians argue that Councilism is the only way to achieve sustainable and equitable growth, while Nazionalista politicians openly pine for the early days of the Fierro dictatorship, and see the Sotirian State of Caluchia as a divine project unjustly cut short by the younger Fierro's madness and ineptitude. If only, they argue, we had another leader like the beloved Berto Fierro, a man of faith and uncompromising Sotirian morals who could put the nation on the right path and once again unite the country behind a common purpose. These arguments, while more popular than they once were, are still a fringe position on the right, but they have nevertheless destabilized the nation's politics and led some on the right flank of Il Partito Liberale to take more uncompromising right wing positions in an attempt to shore up their base. Meanwhile, Il Partito Laburista watches the growth of the Comunalista movement with increasing chagrine, as its leaders scramble to stem the leftist tide. Meanwhile, within the center-left coalition, Il Partito Ambientale, the Caluchian Green Party, has made significant gains amongst the growing middle class and nearly doubled its complement of Senators in the last election, along with their victory over the incumbent Laburista mayor of Fonte Fresca. Thus, the Ambientalista faction has grown significantly in influence within Il Coalizione Popular. With the Senate and the President unable to agree on a budget and the government continuing to be gridlocked, another election seems to be on the horizon, and only time will tell what the future has in store.

Military Overview:

Historically an independent and highly politicized entity, since the September Rising in 1981 the Caluchian military has been thoroughly restructured and subjugated to civilian rule, with the help of international advisers and observers and Commonwealth of Nations peacekeepers. While the large military force under the Fierro regime was not disbanded, to prevent further instability, Caluchia ended its conscription program, and military numbers have been slowly drawn down has soldiers from the Fierro era aged and retired. Retired soldiers receive generous government pensions, in an effort to keep them content and keep the peace, but as the Fierro era veterans have begun to die off federal pension expenditures have finally begun to decline. Large numbers of national guard divisions and reservists can be raised in the unlikely event of a foreign invasion, or to respond to natural disasters. The officer corps is largely composed of soldiers and militiamen who participated in the September Rising, and has been purged of unreconstructed Fierro sympathizers. Caluchia has a fairly well funded coast guard and a green water navy, which polices the economically invaluable Port of San Matteo as well as the rest of the Caluchian coastline. However, Caluchian is unable to project significant naval power beyond this. Caluchia has some home-grown gun manufacturers, but little capacity to produce tanks or fighter jets, and as such purchases them on the international market.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: Varies according to religious identity. Traditional Sotirian Catholics at best pity LGBT+ people and at worst want them criminalized, and violent hate crimes against publicly gay and trans people are not uncommon. At the other extreme, LGBT+ people are a traditional part of Itaheuchan folk religion, and are very much accepted among the indigenous population. Between the two extremes, followers of syncretic or Bahian-based faiths are less certain: some of the more liberal or socialist ones are fully accepting. The rest are broadly uncomfortable with LGBT+ people but much less virulently hateful than the more traditionalist Sotirian Catholics. All of these categories are generalizations: there are of course LGBT+ and allies among traditionalist Sotirians, and anti-LGBT+ Itaheuche, but they are less common. Legally, homosexuality has been decriminalized since the fall of the last dictatorship in 1981, but gay marriage is still illegal and is the subject of political skirmishing between liberals and socialists on the one hand, and conservatives and reactionaries on the other.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Relatively accepting: religious syncretism is common in Caluchia, between Sotirian, Catholicism, Bahian animist beliefs, and native Itaheuchan religion. Historically, however, more conservative nationalist governments fruitlessly attempted to Sotirianize the country more orthodoxly. Thus, some of the more orthodox Sotirians in Caluchia still view syncretic Sotirianity and animist religions as inferior and pine for the “divine order” of past dictatorships.
  • General population's view on atheism: Varies significantly according to religious identity and political affiliation. Largely mirrors the social divide on LGBT+ issues. Many traditional Sotirians and some syncretic Sotirians are actively hostile to atheism, and believe it is destroying Caluchia. Atheism and agnosticism are on the rise among educated urbanites, however, thus comprising another front in the ongoing political scrum.
  • General population's view on abortion: See: Atheism and LGBT+. Currently only legal to preserve the health of the mother, but more left-leaning factions are pushing for legalization.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s):
  • Any big prejudices in your nation:
Colorism is still a powerful force in Caluchian society, particularly on the right. Lighter skinned people were privileged under the colonial regime and later authoritarian governments, so anti-dark skin prejudice is deep rooted. This is complicated by the conflict between the poorer Nuovo Meticcio, born of intermarriage between Bahiani and Ucliani after the Revolution, and the Old Meticcio, who formed part of the pre-Revolutionary plantation economy and became the new elite after the defeat of the Francesciani planters. On the right, there is some degree of anti-Itaheuchan prejudice, but Itaheuchans are viewed as allies in the anti-colonial struggle by most of the Bahio-Asterian population thanks to their contributions to the war effort during the 1792 Revolution.
  • View on immigration into country:
Largely permissive of immigration, barring adherents of the National Party, which is relatively unpopular post-1981: most of the left-right culture war in Caluchia is domestic, and both center-left and center-right governments have been historically welcoming of immigrants due to their potential economic contributions. Until recently however, immigration rates have been fairly low, between Euclean distaste for a majority Bahio-Asterian society as compared to other potential new homes in Asteria, and ethno-nationalist policies under the dictatorship. However, post-democratization Caluchia experienced an extended period of rapid economic growth, rendering the country more attractive to foreign immigrants, so in recent years immigration from Bahia and Coius has accelerated.
  • Women's Rights: Under the 1981 Constitution, women are legally equal to men, and gender discrimination is prohibited. However, this is unevenly enforced, and gender inequality in Caluchia is still very high. However, the matrilineal Itaheuchan minority are relatively gender egalitarian. Like sexuality and abortion, gender equality is a source of political strife between left and right, with socialist and councilist parties making a point of running female candidates for seats in the legislature, and more conservative parties in favor of gender equality on paper but in practice heavily male-dominated.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Tobacco is frowned upon as a colonial vice, and heavily taxed, but segments of the population still smoke. Alcohol and marijuana are legal and largely accepted, except among more conservative Sotirian Catholics.

National Overview:
The first signs of complex social structures in modern day Divyaghaar appeared along the coast and the Bahaav river valley. At first only dispersed mountain tribes, the proto-Pathaari people would form small towns and trading cities between those and the Bashurat river valley civilization. As the influence of the First Phuli Empire grew, so did the towns grow into cities, and Satyism spread itself through the trade routes. When the First Phuli Empire fell apart, this caused the decline of communities that depended heavily on this trade. Seeing this moment of vulnerability, warbands were formed to sack the cities, leading to a warring states period. This period would effectively be ended as the weakened cities accepted the rule of the Sangma Dynasty for protection. Additionally, in the coastal cities of the northwest, Irfan would be introduced by Pardarian merchants, finding a minor presence at first.

Widespread conversion to Irfan would happen as the Sangma Dynasty lost control of the territory to the Alsamid Heavenly Dominion. A long period of conflict would ensue, in which Pathaari chiefs would rebel against the Alsamids time and time again. Many who refused to convert immigrated to Ladhaaka in the northeast and to the mountains in the east. Even among the converted, however, customs rooted in Satyist teachings still remained. During this epoch, throughout the 15th century, Vespasian merchants would reach the northern ports and set up trade outposts, but they would remain there and not have a large impact on the general populace.

This cycle of pushes between Irfanics and Satyists would later give birth to a third element. In the early 16th century, an Irfanic scholar and judge named Darshan sought to better understand the root of the customs and unspoken rules followed by the commonfolk and thus began studying Satyist lore. Little by little, he would come to the realization of there being some truth in both traditions. The people would appreciate his rulings and praise him for his wisdom, and he eventually gained a following of students.

One day, after Darshan cited the dialogue between Adripathi Adhikari and Dzyoti Adhikari to resolve a familial dispute, one of his students questioned him on whether he felt he could call himself Irfanic and give such a ruling. Darshan spent three days on a mountain, meditating on the matter. After this period, he returned and proclaimed to his students: "There is no Irfanic and there is no Satyist. We all must walk the same path of life." Some of his students, finding the declaration blasphemous, left immediately. However, many others stayed and subscribed to his ideas. These became the first Karaka, followers of what became known as Kar ("to walk"), with Darshan as its first Guru.

Kar would spread to other cities as many Karaka went to live elsewhere, often in bureaucratic positions as well, and Guru Darshan took to wandering and spreading his words to the common folk and to the courts alike. His direct successor, Guru Kavi, began compiling Kara teachings into what would form the basis of the Kara holy scripture, the Yaatra ke lie Shabdon. This, of course, did not come without repercussions. Edicts would be passed against Kara teachings, forcing the Karaka to go underground. Since they gained a large following in positions of local power, however, many Karaka were able to use their influence to cover and shield members of the faith. In some communities, they were even able to profess their faith openly. In the early 17th century, Guru Abhay would be persecuted and refused to risk the lives of those close to him by hiding. Guru Abhay's act resulted in his execution. His disciple Jaya, however, succeeded him as Guru, formed a group of honor guards called Shaanadaar Shur and used Abhay's sacrifice to inspire the Karaka to rise up in rebellion.

With the Alsamids suffering heavy losses to the Togoti Khaganate around the same epoch, they were not able to hold back the revolt. Thus was founded Holy Dominion of Divyaghaar, the Divine Abode, around the half of the 17th century, with Guru Jaya as its first ruler. At that time, the territory controlled by the Holy Dominion also included Ladhaaka, which would always be the most unruly of the Divyaghaari territories. The Guru had absolute authority, with his prelates acting as government officials and local governors, but later revolts and plots saw concessions of power to the Shaanadaar Shur.

During the 19th century, Divyaghaar would be the object of Euclean colonial interests. These powers would slowly attain commercial concessions by the use of diplomacy and threat to the use of force. Gaullica would later fully colonize the peninsula of Tchandipour, and Etruria, plotting with members of the Shaanadaar Shur, would remove the Guru from power, with the former being awarded greater provincial authority while answering to an Etrurian governor. During this time, the Gurus would live in exile, preaching against colonial occupation. Gaullican rule over Tchandipour would end in the Great War, which saw the territory passed to Etrurian hands.

When the National Solarian regime took over Etruria, they established firmer control on the colonies, often pitting members of the Shaanadaar Shur against one another as those deemed to be more loyal to Etruria were given privileges. In 1943, as part of the Solarian War, the internal opposition within the Shaanadaar Shur and the anti-colonialist followers of the Guru both fought to expel the National Solarian forces in cooperation with the Community of Nations. The Community of Divyaghaar was established, but disputes ensued as the two factions disagreed over the distribution of power, leading to years of disorganization and later devolving into a civil war. During this chaos, Ladhaaka was able to break free from Divyaghaari rule, and Ajahadya, pursuing its pan-Satrian ambitions, conquered vast swathes of territory from Divyaghaar, among the other Satrian States.

After such crushing losses, the Council of National Accord was established in 1964, forming a compromise between the two factions. A new constitution was passed, establishing the current federal and parliamentary systems. The focus was placed on rebuilding the national infrastructure and reforming its military, which had suffered greatly. In 1972, Divyaghaar formed a coalition with Subarna and Baekjeong to attack Ajahadya and reclaim lost territory. During the 1980s, an operation against Ladhaaka also reconquered a strip of land that was contested between the two due to the presence of a holy site common to both.

By the start of the 1990s, Divyaghaar faced a fiscal and trade balance deficit, causing the government to carry out the liberalization of Divyaghaari economy, ending a decades-long tendency of protectionist interventionism. Now, the Community of Divyaghaar attempts to attain prominence as a Coian power and still finds itself in frequent diplomatic clashes against its northeastern neighbor, always cautious of the moment the tensions might erupt and turn into yet another armed conflict.

Military Overview: Divyaghaar has medium-sized armed forces. Highly specialized in defending Divyaghaari territory, they are not so suited to operations in distant, unfamiliar environments. The navy isn't that capable, being mostly focused on coastal patrol and relative defensive capabilities. The army and the air force, however, receive the bulk of investment and are a force to be reckoned with, capable of swift deployment, and of being employed in a wide array of operations.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: Divyaghaari views on the LGBT+ are greatly influenced by Kar, which is, in turn, influenced by Satyism in this aspect. Transgenders are still a source of debate, as many view them as members of a "third gender" instead of recognizing them as the gender they identify with. Also, despite equality under the law, non-heterosexuals receive some bias as it is a common view that their orientation moves them away from a stable, family-oriented lifestyle. This view is mitigated among younger generations.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: As the core principle of Kar, which has greatly shaped Divyaghaar, is that each religion holds within it a piece of the timeless truth about existence, freedom of creed is constitutionally protected. There is, however, a minor attitude by the Karaka of believing themselves to be wiser for recognizing that.
  • General population's view on atheism: Technically also protected by the freedom of creed rule, although members of older generations hold a mistrust for atheists.
  • General population's view on abortion: Prohibited except in cases of rape, the existence of a risk to the mother's health, and fetal malformation. This has been the source of heated political debate in the last decade.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): The Ladhaaka, in particular, are viewed as a smaller brother of the Pathaari that tries too hard to be different. Eucleans might be viewed as pretentious. Aside from that, there are a few stereotypes but nothing major, and Divyaghaar is a fairly multiethnic State.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: The Free State of Ladhaaka is seen as a pitiful creation of dreamy ethnonationalists. Ajahadya is still the object of some mistrust because of its pan-Satrianist campaign during the mid-to-late 1900s.
  • View on immigration into country: Varies greatly. Mostly positive as long as they integrate well with native society, but tightly controlled when coming from Ladhaaka for national security concerns. Karaka in special are encouraged to move into Divyaghaar.
  • Women's Rights: Gender equality is enshrined in the constitution, and there have been numerous influential females in the nation's history, including Gurus. However, they are still generally expected to take up more domestic duties, and lower-class women are especially vulnerable. Domestic abuse and discrimination in the workplace are recurrent.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: As Guru Darshan’s commandment on the matter was ambiguous, two lines were formed among the Karaka, one that abstains from intoxicants in general and one that believes the ruling to only prohibit excessive use of such substances. The following Gurus, when questioned on interpretations of that ruling, sought a middle ground by ordering each “to act according to their conscience”. Additionally, members of other religions even use intoxicants in some of their rituals. As such, limited commerce and the use of alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and some other natural hallucinogenics are legal.

Government Type: Federal Dominant-Party Presidentialist Constitutional Republic
Head of State: Har Randhawa, President of The Free States of Ladhaaka
Head of Government: Har Randhawa, President of The Free States of Ladhaaka
Requested GDP Per Capita: 13,000
National Overview:
The State of Ladhaaka nowadays occupies what in the antiquity was the Ladhaakan League, a confederation of four city-states, that followed an animist religion. Those four cities had strong militaristic traditions, constantly in conflict with tribes or other neighboring cities, but rarely fought between each other. This sense of unity was reinforced when the southernmost one the four slowly adopted Satyism in a sincretism with it’s animistic religion, that reached the region via trade routes, traveling north from the Phuli Empire.

Slowly Satyism spread, and became the main religion of the four city-states. It’s militaristic traditions fused with the warrior-monk concept of the new faith, and slowly the Ladhaakan League adopted a more defensive disposition to its neighbors. The confederation of cities would stay independent for a time, adopting a very agricultural and coastal economic foundation, and offering strong military opposition to any attempt of invasion or occupation.

The Alsamid would initially be repelled, but after it’s conquests on the region, the League offered submission in the position of a tributary state. During this period, Ladhaaka would receive a strong intake of Parvati refugees from Divyaghaar, to the south, under the Heavenly Dominion, and the spread of Irfan. This migration would be the basis for important conflicts, in the future.

While Divyaghaar would establish a syncretism with this foreign religion, the Ladhaaka cities would resist to changes, maintaining it’s Satyism traditions. Eventually, the Alsamid presence was repelled by the Khaganates and Divyaghaar would regain its independence. This event was the spark to ignite the conflicts between Ladhaaka and Divyaghaar, with the first eventually falling under the control of the later. The invasion would, this time, result in the occupation and annexation of the four city-states, with the resistance subsiding upon cultural means, rejecting the adoption of the new religion or the ethnic union under the parvati flag.

This rejection and refuse to integrate, however, resulted in a refusal of participation on the elevated positions of Divyaghaar, mainly the military. Eventually, the Etrurian Colonization began, and only served to further complicate the situation. Under a common administrative region, the occupation now became twofold, with two different foreign invaders.

After the Solarian War, the four cities once again unified and fought for its own independence, establishing The Free State of Ladhaaka. Border conflicts, with Divyaghaar, to the south, remain to this day the main problem in the nation. The southernmost of the four cities, an important nationalistic and religious symbol, remained under the Holy Dominion.

The Ladhaaka political spectrum is economically and socially liberal, but afflicted by a dominant-party in power, that enforces the values of the Ladhaka nation and its historical Satyist and military roots. The Third Holy Dominion of Divyaghaar is appointed as an enemy, and the claim for the disputed city and border region of the other nation are among the dominant political party main bases of influence.

The Ladhaakan population values their independence and autonomy, as well as the historical militaristic background, and they have constitutional free or softly controlled access to small firearms, depending on the federated state. Social liberties and religious freedom are largely accepted culturally.

Military Overview:
Ladhaaka has historically been a militaristic society, from it’s confederated city-states origins, but that enforces heavily defensive doctrines, and not expansionism. Being a coastal nation, the state has an acceptable defensive Navy, but it’s focus are on the Air Force and Army that are responsible for the protection of the borders to the south. The military service is based upon a temporarily forced draft for all able males and females, of two years, and they remain permanently subjected to conscription upon necessity, but it has never been utilized in the nation history. The military career is of prestige in Ladhaaka, and between of 0.5% to 1% of the nation population is active military component. It has a small number of aircraft carriers, and circa of seven percent of its GDP is invested upon the military.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: Absolute equal civil rights, even marriage, but can be seen as bad karma, principally among the most strongly religious communities.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Accepted and respected, but with some animosity towards Kar and Irfan followers. The creed of any religion is constitutionally accepted, as Ladhaaka is a secular state.
  • General population's view on atheism: Somewhat rejected, but the right of religious exercise is protected by the nation's constitution.
  • General population's view on abortion: Somewhat accepted, and legalized only for special conditions (maternal life, maternal health, physical health and rape). It’s a strong topic of political debate in the last ten years, in a conflict between the Satyist view of the matter and more liberal and progressive groups.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Generally accepted, but the Parvati ethnicity suffers a considerable veiled prejudice, when followers of Kar.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: The following of the Kar religion, even if legally accepted, is largely viewed as an unwanted presence in the nation, based upon the recent and historical conflicts with the neighboring nation. Rarely they have a successful or long lived military or governmental career. The Irfan suffers the same, but in a smaller degree.
  • View on immigration into country: Immigrants are largely accepted and Ladhaaka enforces laws to invite and attract educated immigrants. Even then, Divyaghaar immigrants are not well received by the general populace.
  • Women's Rights: Constitutionally protected to a status of equality to men, but they still suffer discrimination, mainly among the lower class and less educated groups. There still is an imposition of gender roles in more traditional families and communities. Some of the more progressive views can be found among the military, where women slowly have been gaining new positions and prestige, specially after the direct involvement of female groups and individuals during the fight for independence on the earlier century.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs:
Tobacco and alcohol are legalized, but restricted to legal drinking and smoking age. Cannabis and other minor/natural drugs are also legalized, but its use is restricted to specific locations or religious rites, and it’s production is controlled by law. Artificial and aggressive drugs generally are illegal. The topic is a theme of major debate, as a considerable (but no majority) of the population accept the latter. Tobacco, alcohol and cannabis are morally and ethically accepted.

Other:
  • Factbook: Not yet, planning on creating and developing the nation and relevant pages upon acceptance.
  • RP Preferences: Sports, Military, Diplomatic.
  • RP Samples: Not available.
  • RP Intentions: RP and world-building.
  • Primary/Other NS Nations: Roleplay-wise? None.

National information
Official Name: The Geatish Realm [1] (Götiska riket)
Shortened Name: Geatland[1] (Götland)
Requested Location: https://iiwiki.us/wiki/File:NordleyinEuclea.png
Requested Population: 6,192,106
Culture: Geatish culture is based on the Nordic countries. I would describe it as Swedish asthetics with a Norwegian-inspired cultural and political scene. Geatland is a little less well off and a touch more conservative than the IRL Nordics but it's still a prosperous and liberal society by most metrics.

Important to note is that the country still has a thriving aristocrat-lite and old money East Egg culture. A lot of the country's wealth is concentrated in a few wealthy, noble families. Note the country's relatively high Gini (40.1).

  • Ethnicity: Some 92% of the population is Geatish (Swedish) of origin. 2% of the population is Azmaran of origin. Most Geat Azmarans live on the Line Islands, though there are small pockets of Azmarans on the Geatish Island. About 3% hail from other countries on the continent, most usually Werania, Estmere, or even Caldia. The other 3% are immigrants from Coius, typically Bahia and Badawiyya.
  • Religion: The Church of Geatland is the state religion, which is based on Lutheranism. The Monarch is the Supreme Governor of the Church.

About 75% of the country identifies as Sotirian. 70% belong to the Church of Geatland. Another 3% are Catholic. The 2% remaining belong to non-affiliated Protestant churches, to the Orthodox church, or are non-denominational.

About 2% of the country is Atudite, mostly Adonist.

About 1% practice Irfan. Satyism is present in some communities but is statistically negligible.

The remaining 22% are irreligious, agnostic, atheist, or other.
  • Languages: Norsk (Swedish) is the official language. Azmaran is recognized as a regional language on the Line Islands.

Government Type: Unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy
Head of State: Queen (Drottning) Brunhild II
Head of Government: Premier (Statsminister) Karl Nilsson Jung, 4th Baron Jung of Vestby
Requested GDP Per Capita: 42,421 USD
National Overview:

History

The Geatish Island first becomes significant around the fall of the Solarian Empire and the rise of the Verliquoian Empire. The ancestors to the modern Geats moved into the Island from mainland Werania around the 3rd or 2nd century BC. After a series of harsh winters and disastrous climate change, the Geats began a program of raiding towns on the Euclean mainland, looting them and seizing their wealth. These !Vikings grew rich and prosperous; they were a threat to many major cities in Northern Euclea. The Geats encountered Sotirianism and were slowly christianized.

There were many minor Geats kingdoms. These kingdoms were united in 844 under King Gorm I ("the Elder Gorm") in a confederation. Sotirianism rapidly expanded after King Olaf I (Olaf the Pious) was baptized in 1018.[2] This is the First Kingdom of Geatland.

It was around this time that the Geats Island came under the subjugation of the First and Second North Sea Empires, presumably by whoever takes Ordennya's place. Since Ordennya's place is vacant, I'm not exactly sure what direction you want me to take it in the event that Ordennya's absence is not filled. Perhaps Geatland is the heart of the empires?

After the collapse of the Second North Sea Empire in 1314, Geatland was consigned to more or less the area that it has now, sans the Line Islands. Geatland was continuously fractured in civil strife and war waged by different clans vying for the throne. During this time, there was no clear governance of Geatland. By 1665, Erik Longbeard succeeded in subjugating the Geatish clans and kingdoms under the Treaty of Blåstad. Erik Longbeard, dubbed Erik I, seized power from local kings, consolidating power in himself and creating the Second Kingdom of Geatland.

By 1771, the Geatish Crown abetted various activities considered by most to be state-sponsored piracy along Euclea's coast. These acts angered the Azmaran Confederation, and the two countries went to war in the King Rudolf's War of 1791-95. The war was a victory for Geatland, and Azmara ceded a few islands off of its coast to Geatland. These islands were the Linajlaanen, or "Line Islands." The expansion of territory into the Line Islands and Eldmark resulted in Geatland being redubbed as the Geatish Realm.

Geatland saw growth and expansion during the Industrial Revolution. Geatish figures like the civil engineer and railway tycoon Adolf Ahlmann spearheaded modernization and connected Geatland with the rest of the Euclean continent. The hike in wages and standard of living, coupled with the democratization of Euclea, fostered discontent in Geatland. The absolute authority of the Monarch was being challenged. These forces led to the Engström Revolution, an originally republican revolution to overthrown the monarchy. Although the revolution failed, it succeeded in persuading King Erik VI to inaugurate a new constitution in 1867.

Geatland saw itself compromised as the continent geared up for war. Although the FOLK government that was running Gaullica was not functionalist, it had functionalist sympathies and sympathizers. Premier Johannes Lindqvist supported stronger ties with Gaullica, a historical ally. On the opposite side was the Labour Party, led by staunch non-interventionalist Melvin Ekdahl, and the Monarchy led by King Erik IX, whose family has longstanding historical ties with the monarchs of Estmere and Werania. When Erik IX died, his eldest son Otto IV became king. Otto IV was a functionalist sympathizer with strong ties to Gaullica through his favored mistress. Otto's younger brother, Albert, was publicly opposed to war. The assassination of Melvin Ekdahl and a string of Entente successes in 1929 gave Lindqvist the political capital to declare Geatland on the Entente's side. Albert, the king's brother, who continued to publicly oppose the war and had pro-Alliance sentiments, was exiled to Werania on pain of death.

When the Entente lost the war, Otto IV was made to abdicate in favor of his younger brother, who became Albert II. The post-war consensus in Geatland inaugurated social programs and an expansive welfare state. These programs came were challenged in the seventies and eighties when the country was entering chronic economic decline. This period culminated in the rise of Geatish nationalism and Thatcherite deregulation and denationalization. The 70-80s era of Geatish conservatism centered around national conservatism and Geatish exceptionalism, the idea that Geatish geography, demographics, religion, and culture were distinct and unique from the rest of the continent.[3] This movement rejected Geatish ascension into the Euclean Community and was wary of free trade. The late 90s era brought Geatland's conservative ideological sphere into closer alignment with the rest of the continent.

Government and Politics

The Monarch (Monark) is the head of state. The Monarch exercises his power through the Crown (Krona), a corporation sole constituting of the reigning Monarch. On paper, the Crown is the source of all executive, legislative and judicial authority in the Kingdom. The Monarch exercises his royal prerogatives on the advice of the Government and doesn't take direct part in day-to-day governance. The current Monarch is Queen Brunhild II, who has been on the throne since 1952. The premier is the head of government, and he chairs Her Majesty's Government.

The Riksdag is the bicameral legislature with de facto parliamentary sovereignty. The Riksdag is divided into the Folkting and Landsting. The Folkting is the lower house and is directly elected. The Landsting is composed of peers, bishops of the Church of Geatland, and jurists appointed by the Monarch on the advice of the Government. The Folkting is the most powerful of the two houses, and the Landsting is largely a rubber stamp.

The current governing coalition is led by the National Folkpartiet (National People's Party), known simply as FOLK. FOLK is the natural party of governance in Geatland, and it has governed the country for 73 of the last 100 years. FOLK was the spearhead of the aforementioned national conservative movement in the 70-90s. It originally had its roots in strong (some would say fervid) nationalism and protectionism. In modern times, FOLK has somewhat mellowed out, especially in terms of social issues, and has taken cues from the NKP in Werania. It has devolved into becoming more or less a run-of-the-mill center-right party. The main opposition to FOLK is the Labor Party, which is broadly social-democratic, pro-union and pro-EC. The Liberals (Vänster) are a liberal-conservative social-liberal party, while Framåt! (Forward!) is the outgrow of the national conservative movement that ditched FOLK in the late 2000s.

Geography, Administrative Divisions, and Linajlaanen

Most Geats live on the Nord, or Northern, Island, the largest island in Geatish territory. There are other various islands around the Geatish island, the largest of which is Erika with a population of 110,294 people. The Nord Island and the islands around it are referred to as Geatland Minor. These areas are ruled by the Geatish central government and are given some autonomy.

The second area of note in the Northern Kingdom is Linajlaanen or the Line Islands. These islands are majority ethnic Azmarans who have a total population of about 50,000 or so. The Line Islands were given more autonomy after the Great War, and they are now semi-autonomous in the line of Ostry. The Line Islands have autonomy over fishing, policing, and some economic regulation. The Line Islands has its own parliament, and there is a strong secessionist movement somewhat like Enosis.

Military Overview: The Geatish Armed Forces is the military of the country, with the Monarch as commander-in-chief. Conscription is mandatory for both men and women, who must serve 12 months and 8 months respectively. There are at present about 97,100 active personnel, with another four million in reserve. The country has no aircraft carriers or WMDs. 1.9% of GDP is spent on the military. Geatland is neutral in most world affairs and usually does not deploy its armed forces except for humanitarian aid.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: Homosexuality was legalized in 1968, and the age of consent was equalized in 1983. Recognition of the right to change genders was granted in 1995. Civil unions were made available in 2004, and same-sex marriages became legal in 2015. There is wide public support for LGBT rights in Geatland, including the right to marriage. LGBT rights are not contested by any major parties or institutions. Modern discussion around the LGBT community in Geatland typically revolves around giving members of the transgender and non-binary community more rights and protections.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Despite having a state religion, Geatland guarantees the right to freely exercise religion. Atitudism is viewed favorably by a vast majority of the population, as a large number of the nation's leading figures have been Atudite or of Atudite origin. Irfan is newer and more controversial, but it is generally accepted.
  • General population's view on atheism: Atheism is accepted by most, with a few holdouts in the older generations.
  • General population's view on abortion: Abortion is legal on demand for any reason up to the 21st month. After 21st months, it is only legal to save the mother's life or in the case of serious physical or cognitive disabilities shown in the child. If the couple is married, the law requires that the husband be notified of the abortion, but he is not given final say. Doctors are permitted to refuse abortions if they conscientiously object.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Generally accepted, though Geatland is a rather homogenous society to it has not had to brush against waves of anti-immigrant sentiment just yet.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: None
  • View on immigration into country: Since immigration to Geatland has always been steady and gradual, it has never been a hot-bead of particular discussion. It is seen mostly positively.
  • Women's Rights: According to the law, women are held in equal esteem with men. The law provides for comprehensive protections against workplace or housing discrimination. As with many other developed countries, women earn about 20% less than men in terms of non-adjusted average annual salary. Women may enjoy up to 20 weeks of maternity leave. Women were given the vote in 1919. In terms of the Church of Geatland, women have been ordained as priests since 1970. Ordination as bishop is a newer and much controversial problem, but has existed in some form since 2015.

One thing to note is the presence of male-preference primogeniture. In terms of granting noble or royal titles (especially those of the Monarch), a father (or a mother if she occupies those titles of her own right) will pass on his titles to his eldest living son. If he has no living sons, he will pass it to his eldest daughter.[4] This rule applies in much the same way in terms of handing over aristocratic real estate. Although commoners have largely abandoned the system of preferring male children to female children in this way, it is still very much in full force in aristocratic circles. Consider, for instance, that of the hereditary peers that sit in the Landsting, over 90% are men.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: There is a strong Geatish drinking culture, particularly for beer. The legal age is 18 on-premise, 20 off-premise.

Notes:
[2] I'm a little unsure of the history of Sotirianism in Euclea. The Christianization of the IRL Nordics completed in the 12th century. I'm chosen to rap it up two centuries earlier to suit my history better. If this is in conflict with something else, let me know.
[3] cf. Norwegian romantic nationalism
[4] Titles do not pass on to all of the children of the grantee. In most cases, they will pass on solely to the eldest son. Other children are permitted to use courtesy titles, but they do not enjoy their grantee's privilege.

National information
Official Name: Solstianan Council Republic
Shortened Name: Solstiana (from Sølvstjerne, legendary kingdom)
Requested Location: Former Ordennia
Requested Population: 27 million
Culture:
  • Ethnicity: North Germanic
  • Religion: Sotirian
  • Languages: Nynorsk (official), Danish, Sami, Hungarian
Government Type: Federal council republic
Head of State: Premier of the Presidium of the General Congress
Head of Government: Chairperson of the General Congress
Requested GDP Per Capita: 50,000
National Overview:
  • Farmer migrations (5000 - 3000 BCE) introduce settlements throughout the South and displace the Sami transhumanists.
  • Introduction of bronze takes place (1500 - 500 BCE). Bronze was introduced slowly and did not replace stone tools widely because of the lack of local mineral wealth and a lack of trade goods for importing bronze. Bronze artifacts from this period are typically decorative and found in the hoards of chieftains and other important figures.
  • Iron Age & Germanification (500 BCE - 500 CE). A second wave of Germanic migrants displaced some of the original North Germans, most notably the Danes, who moved into the richer southern regions and forced the Norwegians and Sami into more peripheral lands. As a result there were two distinct metallurgical traditions; one imported from Werania and another independently developed by the Norwegians.
  • First North Sea Empire (800 - 1000 CE)
  • Greindrifa/The Divisions (1000 - 1300 CE). The island is divided into a Rotenbergian dominion (south), Norwegian Hrodmir (east), Skirnve (west) which is part of the Second North Sea Empire, and the Sami Fullholt (north).
  • Golden Age (1300 - 1480 CE). It’s literally gold, because it’s Hansa. The Third North Sea Empire takes place during this period including the Dominion of Caldia (1458 - 1489 CE).
  • The island’s largest state is in union with Rotenberg (1480 - 1550 CE) and participated in the Weranic wars (1546-1557 CE).
  • Skredderstat/Tailor’s State (1550 - 1800 CE) was a political period in Solstiana beginning with independence from Rotenberg and ending with the formation of the unified Kingdom of Solstiana. During the Skredderstat, the import of cloth was banned or heavily taxed by almost every government to encourage the development of the wool and textiles industries. This period was characterized by a rapid decline in the economies of Solstianan states, but also the formation of industrial monopolies that would come to characterize the pre-war economy. This also prevented a second golden age from emerging, although that was its objective. Amendist Wars (1582 - 1607 CE) participation was prompted largely by the pontifical control of cloth dying in Southern Euclea. Started with the “stripping of the clergy” which involved the literal seizure of clerical garments, often while they were being worn.
  • Kingdom of Solstiana (1800 - 1935 CE) brought about the standardization of Norwegian and Danish into Nynorsk, originally started as a movement to define the Sami out of their citizenship. The Weranic Revolution & War (1805 CE) takes place and cements Solstiana as separate from the great Germanic world. Joined the Great War (1927 - 1935 CE) allied with Gaullica.
  • After the war a Council Republic (1935 - Present) was established. The Nordic Welfare model emerges, still capitalist, but it was supposed to be transitional. The modern nation is characterized by Anti-monarchist, anti-reactionary politics and aggressive promotion of the council democracy model.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: Homosexuality was decriminalized in the 1960s and became a protected status in the 1980s. Access to gender-affirming surgery is possible, but only through a limited, bureaucratic process.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Over 60% of the population is Amendist, which forms a dominant strain in cultural life. People who adhere to other religions, while generally tolerated in day-to-day life, are often excluded from public life and media.
  • General population's view on atheism: 15-20% of the population is religiously unaffiliated and it is an accepted lifestyle, even preferable to non-Sotirian faiths.
  • General population's view on abortion: Abortion has been accepted since the 1960s, but only became available on request during the later 1980s.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Racism abounds in both public and private life.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation:
Weranians and Solstianans have a long-standing cold relationship because of a Solstianan assassination attempt against the life of <a monarch>. This has a relatively small impact on international relations, since Solstiana primarily acts through the EC, but on an interpersonal level, many view each other with distrust.

The indigenous Sami, while they are now protected from discrimination legally, are still typically ostracized. They tend to have less wealth and fewer opportunities than their Germanic counterparts. Until the 1940s, they were not considered full citizens.

The Danish ethnic identity has been rigorously suppressed during periods of Norwegian domination, including the current Council Republic. It is considered an inferior, low-class dialect of Norwegian.
  • View on immigration into the country: Immigrants are welcome, but are given resources to assimilate and generally are not given full access to the protections of citizenship until they do so.
  • Women's Rights: Women’s liberation has been a centerpiece of public policy since the 1970s, although some areas of public and private life remain unequal including earnings, political offices, and corporate leadership.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Drugs are generally legalized and have a long history as a coping mechanism for the long winter months.

National information
Official Name: People’s Soshanate of Ihsalihna
Shortened Name: Ihsalihna
Requested Location: https://i.imgur.com/FSfRmEj.png
Requested Population: 81.8 million
Culture: In Kylaris, Ihsali culture can be considered a rough equivalent to broader Berber culture, especially Tuaregs. To a lesser extent it also draws from Afghans, Kurds and Yemenis. As an Irfanic nation is heavily influenced by Kylaris’ equivalents of Arabs and Persians - the Sahra are essentially Arab-Berbers that have experienced significant Persianization.
  • Ethnicity: The primary ethnic group of Ihsalihna are Sahra, forming approximately 88% of the population. Significant minorities include Badawiyan, making up approximately 8.7% of the population, and the Ihsali Atudites, known as the Sha’voni, making up 2% of the population.
  • Religion: The overwhelming majority of Ihsali practice Irfan. 10.2% follow Roshani Irfani, a local sect of Asha influenced by mystical traditions, while 31% follow mainstream Asha and 46.6% are Hasawi Irfani. Concerning non-Irfani, 9.7% of Ihsali are Sotirians of various traditions, while 2.33% of the population are of the Atudist faith.
  • Languages: The official languages of Ihsalihna are Shamali Badawiyan and Azerfi, the language of the native Sahra peoples. Shamali Badawiyan is a creole language, incorporating aspects and terms from Pasdani and Gaullican. Gaullican has no official status, but is believed to be spoken or understood by approximately 57% of Ihsali.
Government Type: Democratic confederalist Irfanic state
Head of State: Sayyida il-Hurra Kalilah Nizar Awrabi, regent and Da'i il-Mutlaq of the Vadastūr Karim Rashid il-Adarisah
Head of Government: Premier Jalil Imohar
Requested GDP Per Capita: 9,370.18 USD
National Overview: In ancient times, Ihsalihna was settled by the Sahric peoples, nomads native to the Shamali region of northeastern Badawiya and northern Bahia. Atudite merchants began founding colonies across the coast in the 12th century BC, one of which would rise to become the major naval and mercantile power of Eyrthad, a rival of the early Solarian Republic. Eyrthad was defeated by the Solarians following the Battle of Xama and the region occupied for centuries, leaving a legacy of Suhalan language and introducing the Sotirian faith. In the face of significant but isolated Sahric resistance, notably by the Sahric warrior queen Sha'ira, the land fell to Irfanic Badawiyan invasions and was incorporated into the Heavenly Dominions, with several Ihsali cities becoming centres of learning, art, and trade. From this period onwards Ihsalihna also became infamous for Irfanic corsairs operating along its coasts.

In the 900s the mystic Roshani movement gained power and founded the Farinid Soshanate, led by the Vadastur Adrish I, claiming descent from the Prophet Zoroaster’s eldest daughter and further taking the Roshani spiritual title of Soshan, meaning "one who brings benefit". The Soshanate would grow to become a powerful Irfanic state in its own right, coming into conflict with Euclean and fellow Irfanic powers. The fall of the Soshanate accompanied the Vadastur entering into hiding among the powerful Kel Awrabi clan confederacy, and numerous dynasties would rise and fall in Ihsalihna before the 19th century saw Estmere effectively vassalize the Khizrid dynasty and seize control of Ihsalihna. Several rebellions culminated in a democratic revolt, though soon after Khizrid dynasty was deposed by a Estemere sponsored military coup and the ensuing regime of General Issam Zuhayr took power. While the regime industrialized and modernized the nation, it brought horrific repression: in response to over a decade of autocratic rule, a socialist-inspired Irfanic mass movement erupted. Inspired by contemparary Irfanic revival movements and led by the chief of the powerful Kel Awrabi clan, Sa'id Iften Achaffa, the revolution led to a brief but violent civil war. Following Achaffa's assassination by state security forces, the revolution unified behind his widow, the noblewoman Sayyida il’Hurra. During the ensuing uprising and Roshani Revolution of 1971 that restored the ancient Farinid dynasty to power.

The modern state of Ihsalihna is commonly defined as a libertarian socialist confederation, practising direct democracy at a local and provincial level with a national assembly at the national level. The head of state is the Vadastur, the highest ranking religious scholar in Roshani Irfan, an office currently held by Karim Rashid il-Adarisah. The de facto head of state, following Karim il-Adarisah’s entering into occultation to avoid assassination attempts, is the Sayyida il’Hurra, Kalilah Nizar Awrabi. As the latest in a line of female nobles claiming descent from ancient Sahric queens and loyal servants of the Vadastur, the Sayyida il’Hurra is the Vadastur’s appointed regent and one of the few Irfanic women to serve as a head of state. A deeply spiritual and traditional society contrasted with progressive freedoms and growing modernism isn’t without its conflicts, and there is a historical disparity between the traditionally nomadic, pastoralist interior and sedentary agrarian coasts. Despite this Ihsalihna remains a relatively stable and developed nation, with a high standard of living compared to nations with similar economies.

Military Overview: The People's National Armed Forces are the small but professional and well-trained military of Ihsalihna, constituting a large body of reservists trained during national conscription supplementing the smaller, volunteer active-duty core. The main roles of the Ihsali military in recent years have been international peacekeeping, humanitarian aid and counter-terrorism, with its navy operating in an anti-piracy capacity in cooperation with other nations. The Ihsali People’s Defence Regiments is an irregular fourth branch of the armed forces, made up of tribal militia and volunteer units that elect their own officers, serving as a combined asymmetrical warfare force and national guard. The Ihsali Army’s main strengths are light infantry and armoured warfare; the navy’s focus on small surface warships, coastal submarine warfare and fast attack craft; and the air force’s strengths in highly trained pilots and air superiority and defence. Weapons of mass destruction are banned under Roshani esafkar, though the nation has been suspected of pursuing nuclear proliferation in the past. Ihsalihna has decommissioned all chemical and biological weapons, but maintains the use of incendiary weapons such as napalm and white phosphorus.

Equipment is to be determined based on political factors, and either modern or outdated but kept upgraded and used in unorthodox manners to maintain its usefulness. Its main supplier(s) of equipment will probably be a member of the Association for International Socialism, Xiaodong, or even possibly Gaullica - Estmerish equipment may be present due to Ihsalihna's colonial past, either outdated stuff from the military regime era or modern technology if the government has improved relations.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: The broad attitudes of Ihsalihna's heavily Irfanic society are negative and conservative regarding the rights of gender and sexual minorities. Unfortunately the official stance of the government is that homosexuality is a mental disorder, and thus should be treated as a medical condition needing to be "cured" - the death sentence is not applied to homosexual acts, but fines and/or jail time are. Only about 25% of polled Ihsali support gay rights, and social discrimination and even hate crimes are rife. Ihsalihna's LGBT community exists underground only in cosmopolitan urban areas, or on the internet. On the contrary, changing one's legal gender is supported by law and sex reassignment surgeries are available to the populace, with discrimination common but illegal. The nation also enjoys a surprisingly progressive response to HIV/AIDS.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: The vast majority of the population have no negative views towards those of major non-Irfanic faiths, and monotheistic religious movements are protected and supported by the government. The practice of religions considered heretical by Irfanic teachings is not widely condemned, but official support for such religious communities is few and far between, and proselytizing for a religion other than Irfan is criminalized. The exception is so-called "new religious movements", considered socially dangerous by the government and their followers subject to discrimination.
  • General population's view on atheism: Atheism is taboo and only tolerated if it is not conspicuous. Though criminalized, punishments are not officially enforced - atheists however are far more likely to face unofficial discrimination or hate crimes. Despite this, Ihsali culture is somewhat accepting of agnosticism.
  • General population's view on abortion: Abortion is legalized before 120 days of conception, and a freely available service for all citizens.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Racial issues are unfortunately not absent in Ihsalihna, and like all others the nation still suffers from the complexes of colour and race. Under Irfan all races are equal, and following the Roshani Revolution the government has worked to enforce this. However major discrimination still exists towards those of darker skin, and on top of these racial divisions, long taboo, are the traditional social castes of pre-Irfanic Ihsali society. Prejudices still exist towards the descendants of slaves, Bahians, and ethnic Atudites.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: Ihsali tend to be wary of Eucleans and anyone of their culture, including Ihsali expats, considering them partial to colonialism and imperialism, with many also viewing them as far too occupied with capitalist pursuits. The legacy of colonialism leaves many Ihsali to view Estmerish in distaste.
  • View on immigration into country: Immigration is typically opposed on economic factors, though racial prejudice is most certainly a factor when it comes to Bahian immigration. Immigration by Eucleans and non-Irfan is typically frowned upon, but social relationships with immigrants themselves usually are stable, and hospitality is a major overarching factor in Ihsali culture.
  • Women's Rights: Sahric society is traditionally matrilineal, and women have played a prominent role in Ihsali society and history from before the arrival of Irfan to the present day. Many consider Ihsali women to enjoy many rights denied to women in neighboring countries, though significant gender disparities and sexism remain. Most Ihsali believe women have the right to vote and participate in society, as supported and enforced by law, but wage gaps, discrimination, sexual assault and arranged marriages remain issues.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Smoking tobacco in public is illegal, however often not enforced. Cannabis is legal for medical purposes - with standards lax enough that anxiety or PMS is enough to allow one access, and it is therefore a common recreational drug. Alcohol on the other hand is strictly illegal save for express medical purposes, and drinking is a taboo that is partaken primarily by rebellious youth with access to the black market. All other drugs are illegal - opium remains the most common illegal drug used in Ihsalihna, and major steps have been taken to combat high levels of opium addiction.

National information
Official Name: Republic of the Sabanas
Shortened Name:(the) Sabanas
Requested Location: Here. Please note the two small outlying islands included in the claim -- not 100% needed if it doesn't fit but would be great if they could be included.
Requested Population: 1.8 million
Culture: A multi-ethnic Carribean-esque archipelago. Heavily influenced by Etruria due to its lengthy colonial past, as well as Gaullica and Caldia. RL inspirations include Trinidad & Tobago, the Bahamas, Barbados, basically anywhere in the Carribean.
  • Ethnicity: 43% Bahian, 24% Coian, 19% Mixed (metako), 10% Euclean, 4% Other
  • Religion: 65% Sotirianism (54% Solarian Catholic), 10% Badi, 5% Irfan, 2% Other, 18% Irreligious
  • Languages: Vespaspian (official), Sabanian Creole (vernacular)
Government Type: Unitary semi-presidential republic
Head of State: Emanuelle Rocca (President)
Head of Government: Giuliani Bianchi (Prime Minister)
Requested GDP Per Capita: $31,000 PPP, $22,000 nominal
National Overview: Prior to colonisation, the Sabanas were primarily inhabited by the Caticey [Ciboney] people, a group closely related to the Nati people who inhabited Maracao and Imagua. Following the islands’ discovery by Assim Asteris in the late 15th century, Caldish merchants established the first Euclean settlement in the form of Fort Rachmas (now Portrocmos) on Poca Sabana in 1521. Two years later, in 1523, the expedition of Raffaele di Mariran landed along the northern coast of Grande Sabana, claiming it for Poveglia. The latter empire would go on to take over the entire archipelago, dominating it for much of the following centuries.
The early colonial period was characterised by the development of a cash crop economy similar to neighbouring colonial entities with sugar, cocoa and tobacco making up the bulk of exports. The first influx of Bahian slaves took place to work on the Euclean plantations. With the abolishment of slavery in 1786, the need to supplement the islands’ plantations led to an influx of Gowsa as well as a significant number of Euclean immigrants to work under indentured conditions, thus further altering the demographic landscape of the archipelago. The islands were also used as a penal colony for Poveglia and later the state of Etruria, the bulk arriving in the 17th and 18th centuries. Their descendants make up most of the modern-day Euclean population.
Between the 17th and 19th centuries, the sovereignty of the islands changed hands amidst the various conflicts that engulfed the major colonial powers, both in the Acurian and back in Euclea. The strategic location of the island as well as its status as a resourceful plantation economy led to a long-standing tit-for-tat between the two largest colonial forces in the Acurian - Etruria and Gaullica, effectively replaying their own rivalry on the islands. Whilst the former had a long-standing presence on the colony, the islands were invaded on several occasions by Gaullica in an attempt to expand its reach further into the Acurian belt. The Treaty of Hammarvik, signed in 1814, formally partitioned the archipelago between the two empires. Gaullica obtained the southern portion of Grande Sabana, whilst Etruria retained the northern half as well as the whole of Poca Sabana.
During the Great War, the Sabanas faced massive upheaval. Gaullica invaded the Etrurian sector in 1928, beginning a six-year long occupation. A Nemtsovist/separatist insurrection inspired by the Maracan Liberação was defeated by Gaullican forces in May 1934, but it was a pyrrhic victory. The wider Gaullican defeat in the War led to their withdrawal from the island, with Etruria re-establishing sovereignty over the entire archipelago. Following the Solarian War, the Sabanas declared independence from Etruria and a power vacuum ensued between Communist factions (namely the Front for the Independence of the Sabanas) and right-wing reactionary forces, leading to the Sabanian Civil War. The FIS emerged victorious and declared a revolutionary government in March 1949, but it came at a dire human and financial cost. The new government attempted to install a council republic system akin to Swetania and Chistovodia, however its efforts were tarnished by a weak and shaky administration, dissent within the recently formed military as well as the shattered economy. A Nuvania-Nuxican-backed military coup in 1957 deposed the FIS regime and installed a right-wing junta, headed by General Aroldo Marino. In 1981, a peaceful revolution ousted the Marino regime, with democratic elections being held and a new Constitution enacted.
Today, the Sabanas is a diverse nation with a relatively strong democratic system, despite corruption and inequality being omnipresent. In recent years, the islands have become infamous for its foreign tax haven status, in addition to its strong reliance on tourism.

Military Overview: The Defence Forces of the Sabanas is inherently small, owing to the small size of the nation and its location. Originally acting as the re-enforcers of the previous two authoritarian regimes, the Forces were re-organised post-democratisation. Complementing the small size of the Force, it has a limited amount of equipment at its disposal.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: LGBTQ+ rights in the Sabanas have progressed significantly in recent decades, but still lag behind many other Western nations. Homosexuality was decriminalised in 1988, followed by anti-discrimination laws extending to LGBTQ+ citizens in 1995. However, same-sex marriage remains illegal in the Sabanas, despite growing public support. The right to change legal gender also remains illegal.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Whilst religion is a source of individual pride and proudly professed by many Sabanians, the vast majority have full respect for their fellow citizens' right to their own belief. However, there is some discrimination attributed towards to more recently-imported religions.
  • General population's view on atheism: With nearly one-in-five professing no faith, atheism has never really been a taboo subject in modern-day Sabanas.
  • General population's view on abortion: Abortion is only legal under certain circumstances, e.g. risk to the mother’s life, mental health etc. -- It is still very much a touchy subject for many in the Sabanas. In particular, the Catholic Church continues to be at the forefront of the anti-abortion debate.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Whilst most Sabanians are proud of the diverse, multiethnic nature of their country, racism is still present even if it is only espoused by a minority. Some older Eucleo-Sabanians, particularly those of Etrurian descent, still have their suspicions of the Bahian and Gowsa populations, harking back to the Eucleo-centric Marino regime. Historically, there was often tension between Bahians and Gowsa, often encouraged by the colonial powers' divide and conquer strategy. Some of this still lingers today, but to a very small extent.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: The term “Gauzzo”, referring to the Gowsa immigrants of the 18th and 19th centuries, has become an age-old slur. In modern times, it has been used primarily by some towards darker-skinned immigrants from South-Eastern Coius, in particular those who cannot speak Vespaspian or Sabanian Creole. The word is also still used by some to refer to the Gowsa population as a whole, causing great hurt and offence.
  • View on immigration into country: Immigration has become more of a touchy subject for many Sabanians in recent years. Many Eucleo-Sabanians are weary of immigration from poorer nations in Coius, whilst many Bahian and Gowsa worry that immigration from mostly-white countries for financial and banking jobs in particular is harming their chances of reaping the rewards of the country’s recent economic success.
  • Women's Rights: The rights of women have expanded greatly over the past 60 years, culminating in the election of the country’s first female prime minister, Malvolia Necci-Gaidar, in 2000. However, abortion still remains a difficult issue for many.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Owing to the country’s long history of tobacco production, smoking rates in the Sabanas is among the highest in the world. Consumption of alcohol also has a long history on the islands, with a rich culture of bars and taverns. Despite all this, the consumption of most other forms of drugs and narcotics, from marijuana to heroin, remains strictly forbidden.

National information
Official Name: Terangau, Abode of Peace
Shortened Name: Terangau
Requested Location: https://iiwiki.us/mediawiki/images/2/28 ... rangau.png
Requested Population: 53,192,129 (this is roughly the population of Sumatra, which is a similar size to Terangau)
Culture: Pre-Islamic Malay/broader Indonesian. Influenced historically by Dezevau
  • Ethnicity: Terangauni make up the majority of the population at 91.4%. Pelangi (!Malay) are the largest minority at 6.8%. Gaullicans and other groups make up the remaining 1.8%.
  • Religion: Badi is the largest being followed by ~40% of the population. Growing numbers of irreligious. Declining numbers for Sotirianism and Irfan.
  • Languages: Pali is the official language. Ziba and Pelangi recognized as regional languages
Government Type: Federal republic
Head of State: Premier Yuno Hamengkubuwono
Head of Government: Same as above
Requested GDP Per Capita: $20,391
National Overview: Antiquity: possible cultural links to Dezevauni city-states. Agriculture would spread to Terangau from Dezevau. City-states would lead to petty kingdoms with a few managing to secure most, if not all, of the island. Middle ages antiquity polities would largely be superseded by mainland polities and Terangau would become somewhat of a backwater although still geopolitically relevant due to assumed sea trade between Xiaodong and Bahia. 15th century, a city-state manages to take over the entirety of the island, forming a Bruneian Empire type of polity that waxes and wanes until the 19th century. Like Dezevau, Terangau would gradually come under Gaullican influence and in 1849, the reigning Terangauni monarch would submit as a Gaullican protectorate. Communist and Anti-Imperialist movement would emerge following the Great Collapse. This would turn into an insurgency over the course of the Great War and following Terangau being turned into a mandate. Socialist state established in TBD Year (1939?). Would join ASES when it was formed in 1949. Post-ASES history TBD but will prob largely echo what goes on in Dezevau.
Military Overview: Decentish military. Relatively modern but small and meant mostly as a token self-defence force.

Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: Some prejudices against them are held by the Sotirianity and Irfan practitioners. Majority of Badi population is mostly indifferent to the entire thing. Pro-LGBT+ laws and protection against discrimination would start being a thing in the 1970s and 1980s, with same-sex marriage itself legalized in 1999
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Terangau is a multireligious state although the largest following is Badi. Minority religions are protected by government laws, plus the syncretic nature of Badi has made religious tension less of an issue.
  • General population's view on atheism: No real prejudice and the largest growing denomination (if it could be called that)
  • General population's view on abortion: Abortion was legalized in 1966
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Relatively positive views due to being an important maritime hub historically.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: Some premodern discrimination undertones between the various Terangauni ethnic spectrum groups still exist
  • View on immigration into country: Generally viewed as okay
  • Women's Rights: Views and attitudes tend to be fairly modern/aligned with Chistovodia and Swetania
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Tobacco, alcohol, marijuana are legal. Some hallucinogens are regulated for entheogenic purposes. “Hard” drugs would be decriminalised in an effort to try to help addicts get sober.

Other:
  • Factbook: TBD
  • RP Preferences: I don’t RP
  • RP Samples: (If not available, ask for a prompt.)
  • RP Intentions: Worldbuilding
  • Primary/Other NS Nations: Poliania
  • Any troubles with moderation? (If so, a link, please.): reapp to reflect the switch to communism; briefly spoke about it with liec and glyt
  • Anything else?: n/a

Head of State: Premier Laina Keomany
Head of Government: Same as above
Requested GDP Per Capita: $7,370.00
National Overview:
The history of Lavana is one marked by differences between the inland populations and the coastal populations. The name Lavana means between rivers, referencing the Siadng in the North, and the Sisom in the south. Rivers are very important for the nation and have a deep meaning in Lavanaic culture. The Sasuana Empire arose in the 6th Century B.C. uniting most of the country under it’s banner from the city of Thy Luc in the Kung River, which flows through the center of the country and is since antiquity the spine of the Lavanaic Culture. The Sasuana Empire introduced the Lavanaic beliefs, which established the 20 most important Cities in Lavana as the 20 Sisters, with all tracing their existence to the 3 Brothers, those being the rivers of Siadng, Sisom, and Kung.

The Sasuana Empire would fall around the 1st Century C.E. After its collapse from invaders from the great steppes, the Coastal cities would seek the opportunity to expand their trading networks, which saw Lavanaic merchants travel to neighbouring Dezevau and Terangau. The City of Thy Luc would in the second Century C.E. break from their steppe conquerors and would establish the Second Sasuanan Empire, which would wage war against it’s neighbouring cities. The Coastal cities fearing their wealthy and vibrant trading connections could come under control of a revitalized inland neighbour banded together in the first Zapoten League, which waged war against the Second Sasuanan Empire. The League would struggle to find much success against the Empire, after numerous defeats and with the death of King X, the Empire fell into turmoil as war over who would come to control the empire between the Kings 3 sons, allowed the League to overcome the Empire, benefiting one of the three sons which would establish the Nukhao Empire, with large influence from the First Zapoten League in the 3rd Century. During this time Badi began to enter Lavana from Dezevauni merchants around Lake Zindarud, and coastal trade routes.

By the 5th Century however, the Zapoten League struggled with inner rivalries, as the threat that had united the city states had disappeared and concerns over one city holding too much power in Thy Luc grew. The First League would break around the year 415, falling into inner conflict which affected the inland Nukhao which saw itself embroiled in the conflicts of the coastal cities, this period was known as the Lavanan Dark Ages. The Lavanan Dark Ages saw the country descend into a complicated period of warfare and politics, culminating in the 7th Century C.E. With the establishment of the Mignan Empire ruling from the city of Luc Kai, the Mignan Empire was able to give the Coastal cities large swaths of autonomy having no interest in turning the coastal merchants and their wealthy routes over to regional competitors, the Mignan Empire had also established an intricate system of river policing and control making the rivers safer to travel, after riding it of pirates and other bandits. At this time the Mignan Empire began to seek alliances with Dezevauni city-states to establish monopolies on the trade routes, the Mignan navy was expanded to aid this. Mignan also during this time made Badi the official practice of the state

The Mignan suffered from nomadic raiders from the great steppe, and moved to dismantle the nomadic groups establishing a minor presence in the region establishing a system of tributaries which would provide the Mignan with defence from further inland nomads. The Mignan Empire would expand north against the Dezevauni city states citing territorial disputes, such expansion would be seen with weary concern by other city states which feared the further advance of the Mignans. In the 11th Century a civil war would erupt in Mignan which would see the Dezevauni, Steppe tributaries, and the Coastal Cities which merged into the Second Zapoten League. The Conflict would begin over a question of succession, after a period of conflict the new Yama Empire would arise based around the city of Liuc Pa , which would set in its sights the conquest of the former Mignan Empire lands, such campaigns would culminate in the early 12th Century. The Yama would also continue their overland campaign against the Dezevauni expanding their foothold over the region, the Dezevauni saw little benefit in becoming part of the empire and it’s ever expanding influence in the region, with much attention paid to the coastal Lavanan cities.

In the 14th Century such discontent resulted in rebellions and uprisings by the Dezevauni City States. The Yama began to lose power and influence as it began to move to benefit the Dezevauni city states, such moves angered the Coastal southern cities which feared the transfer of power from a local ally to a Dezevauni might cause them to lose their profitable lands. In the late 14th Century with pressure from the Terangauni Empire and growing instability, a small civil war erupted with the Aguda Dynasty from the Dezevauni City of tbd, took control of the Empire, turning it into the Aguda Empire.

Again as during the fall of the Mignan the periphery was quick to secede from the collapsing structure, the establishment of the third and final League of the Zapoten failed to counter the Agudan Empire. The Agudan undertook a policy of integration of the ethnic groups Lavana, encouraging the settling down of the overcrowded coastal cities in the fields of the region, with hundreds moving west to settle in newly established farms in the countryside. (Nothing much changes here from the Agudans other than Lavana becoming more united under one major language and such).

The collapse of the Aguda Empire, and it’s disbanding allowed the Lavanans to establish their own state, under the Triumvirate a group of 3 families which changed the position of King between them, they were nothing more than puppets to the Gaullican colonizers, at this time some Gaullican colonizers arrived to the coasts of Lavana. Lavanaic’s were greatly dissatisfied with the Triumvirate which they viewed as simple Euclean puppets. The Coalition for a Free Lavana or the CFL, the CFL was split between Socialist and Democratic groups but was majorly a Democratic Nationalist group, which had aligned to free Lavana. The CFL began popular movements to seek independence, such movements found little success, until the Great War where minor insurgency from the group clashed with Triumvirate Forces, the Gaullican defeat in the war, saw the Triumvirate lose it’s primary backer and was thrusted into negotiations with the CFL, such negotiations fell and the CFL mobilized to engage the Triumvirate forces.

The CFL saw it’s influence fall under the Socialists which backed a no treaty, and no ceasefire seeking nothing else than the destruction of the colonial regime, they began to diverge from the Democratic groups, yet they remained nominally together. In 1943 the Triumvirate would be defeated being replaced by a Democratic presidential republic, initially the Democratic and Socialists worked together seeking to improve the devastated country side, but various issues divided both parties. Growing divergence between both groups would culminate with the Socialists separating from the CFL in 1948 and would see the start of a general guerilla war between both sides.

Socialist forces would at first suffer at the hands of the CFL and Badi militias which feared the Socialist rhetoric regarding repression against Religion, Socialist operated National Defence Units operated at a village level defending villages and providing for defence against CFL forces which utilized scorched earth tactics. In 1957 a coup of the CFL would result in it turning into a Military Dictatorship, this coupled with a Socialist revitalization resulted in numerous Socialist victories, following the Offensive of the Spring Festival Socialist forces would overwhelm the CFL and force them off key cities in 1964, the Socialists would enter into the capital. The war would continue until 1969, when the CFL were defeated.

The government entered into agreements with Dezevau it’s Northern neighbour and entered the greater worldwide socialist apparatus, in 1981, a small scale insurgency from the north west of the country would see it involved in conflict in the region, the government would brutally oppress such attempts and attempt to ethnically integrate those regions but it would highlight the major issue of Minority Rights in the country. Such conflict would culminate in 1989 with the passage of laws establishing minority rights in the country. Alongside with most of the Socialist World a movement for liberalization and opening of economies would see the country advance greatly in its ways, but would maintain the People’s Party for the Liberation of Lavana as the majority power, with its main opposition being the Democratic Front. It’s a member of the AIS in modern times.

Military Overview: The People’s Armed Forces (PAF), are a large 350,000 strong force consisting of the Army, Navy, and Airforce. The Army maintains a doctrine of quantity rather than quality, with the Army divided into 3 Sections: The A section refers to the 50,000 strong core of the army consisting of professional and well trained personnel, which are armed with modern equipment. The B section refers to the 200,000 strong contingent of part time, and reserve units, they hold mostly outdated equipment, and are designed to supplement the A Section however it may come necessary. The 100,000 strong C Section is characterized by their use of obsolete equipment and can be considered a Paramilitary force within the army, they take inspiration and history from the mostly farmer made National Defence Units, which worked to maintain central government authority in Guerrilla controlled areas.

The Airforce is made up of mostly old airframes, with a small core of highly trained and well equipped and modern aircraft, provided by AIS member states (I was also looking if maybe all the Vinalian !Mig-25’s and !Mig-23’s were sold to Lavana). The Navy operates hundreds of river patrol boats, with the goal of policing the many rivers of the nation, the navy holds a small bluewater capabilities only operating a few outdated vessels and a small contingent of submarines.
Social views:
  • General population's view on LGBT+ rights/LGBT+ people: This front has seen considerable growth, with laws entering in place to protect LGBT+ plus individuals.
  • General population's view on religions other than the primary one: Lavanans don't hold much issue on the subject, but Badi still remains the dominant religion in the country.
  • General population's view on atheism: Around a fifth of Lavanan’s are irreligious, and it’s a growing trend in Lavana despite most of the population holding religious beliefs.
  • General population's view on abortion: Lavanans mantain the free access to abortions, after illegal abortions resulted in the deaths of many young women, it’s legalization was controversial, however the subject is not seen as one of contention.
  • View on other races/ethnic groups other than the primary one(s): Lavanans are highly accepting of other ethnic groups, although previous attempts by the government to increase ethnic uniformity have been met coldly specially in the western region, were such attempts have been undertaken.
  • Any big prejudices in your nation: Prejudice against some minorities exist but they’re mostly reduced around to just suspicion of them.
  • View on immigration into country: Lavanans are open to immigration from foreign groups.
  • Women's Rights: Lavanan’s maintain equal rights between men and women, since the establishment of the Socialist regime.
  • Views on tobacco/alcohol/pot/other drugs: Alcohol and tobacco are free to consume for the population with only restrictions barring anyone under 18 from consuming or buying the products, barring use in religious ceremonies. Pot and other drugs are strictly barred from consumption unless in religious ceremonies, which must be pre approved by the government.
