New Year's Celebrations in YN

Postby The Huterric Union » Tue Jan 01, 2019 8:16 am

What are the traditional celebrations for New Year's in YN?

In terms of parties, it is tradition for everyone to arrive about 8 hours before the new year to socialise then have a large meal (usually high in calories, too), then start drinking heavily 2 hours before the new year. It is common for an altered version of King's Cup called Huterric Union to be played. Then dancing and music are played for an hour after the new year arrives. Then afterwards those who haven't passed out drunk all play a board game.

In terms of how we welcome the new year, it's different in different parts of the country as we span 5 time zones, but 2 events are broadcast on live television. The first is the Fireworks Display in Lansadas, where Fireworks are set launched from the towers in the Huterrica Square Plaza as well as the 6 pillars of the Thorney Estuary Crossing on Highway 12. Beforehand and after the display the lights on the Thorney Crossing will be illuminated Orange, which is associated with new beginnings.

When midnight strikes two hours later in Lakeland, there is a fireworks display from Ganniston Hill, a tall hill 1km east of Lakeland Cathedral. The Cathedral is famous for its bells, where there are 12 for change ringing on the north side and 18 for tune ringing on the south side. The tune ringing bells ring out our national anthem, Glory to the Union, upon Midnight. This is meant to symbolise that the entire nation is now in the new year, as Lakeland is the last major city to see in the new year.

The morning after people are usually hungover or passed out from exhaustion. Around midday brunch is cooked for the guests which consists of an array of meat and pastries (not together though). Then, nearly 24 hours after arriving, everyone goes home and gets an early night in before work the next day. 1st January is a day off work and school nationwide.

Typical New Years get together. Families dine as one, friends have party, a countdown is initiated with fireworks at the end.

Shrillland technically celebrates the new year twice. On December 31, we have the annual New Year's Pop Festival in Victory Square, New Maxia, Equinia, which starts at 6 P.M and goes on until 2:00 A.M. It's a festival of pop music and dance that normally brings in as many as 600,000 at one time. At Midnight, we count down from 20 seconds as two large crystal balls appear above the House of the People. A Red crystal drops down from a high balcony(a safe distance from spectators) as a Blue crystal rises onto the flagpole above the Shrill flag. At the time both reach their respective destinations, it's midnight, and all shout happy new year.

Similar festivities take place in most Shrill cities, and many families and groups of friends come together for private parties as well.

The second celebration is on the Summer Solstice for Harmonists. The celebrations there start at midnight, including carnivals and dance parades in major cities. In New Maxia, the main party is in the aptly named Celestial Park, the largest in the city, where people look to the east at sunrise and witness the sun rising as the official sign of the Harmonist New Year, which has been the start for over 1000 years.

In Gandoor, the New Year is celebrated by watching the New Year's Eve Broadcast on GBN. The New Year's Eve Broadcast is an annual special that has aired on GBN, the Gandoorese public broadcaster, since 31 December 1949 and was the first non-experimental television broadcast in our nation. The special airs live from Osaka, our largest city, and starts at 19:00 GWT/20:00 GCT/21:00 GET and ends at 1:00 GWT/2:00 GCT/3:00 GET.

During the New Year's Eve Broadcast there are musical performances, comedy skits, and a New Year's speech by the Prime Minister. In the early years of the special, the Prime Minister's speech was prerecorded, but starting with the 1960 New Year's Eve Broadcast, they have delivered it live during the show. The Prime Minister also counts down to the New Year three times during the broadcast, one for each of Gandoor's three time zones. (Rather uniquely, the 'big' countdown is actually last, that being the countdown for New Year on the West Coast, as most of Gandoor's major cities, including Osaka, where the New Year's Eve Broadcast occurs, are located there)

The New Year's Eve Broadcast has been the most watched television event during the New Year ever since 1959 with the one airing a few days ago, celebrating the end of 2023 and the start of 2024 reaching a 70% audience share.

On New Years Eve a few minutes before midnight our President makes a two minute speech and then gets on a chair. It is a Vallermoorian tradition to get on a chair just before the New Year and jump off into it on the first stroke of midnight. People link arms, sing Auld Lang Syne , hug and kiss friends and family members, dance in a circle and then watch the national White House fireworks display on TV, and often they let off their own fireworks too. Vallermoorian cities often sound like they are in the middle of warzones on New Year's Eve with all the fireworks going off. Although it is banned, every year a few people fire their guns in the air as well, if they can get away with it.

Sadly, a few people drink and drive and get jailed and one or two end up facing death penalty charges for causing death or permanently paralysing someone through drink driving. As long as the country is at peace, military discipline is loosened a little bit on New Year's Eve, and men can even ask questions of officers and NCOs within reason and not be punished for doing so.

The Animalese stay up (most of them), talk with family and friends, attend the New Years Festival in old town, Animalia (capital of Leaf-Fall), and give gifts. The town hall and most shops and businesses close on New Year's Eve and New Years (except for hospitals, police, etc.). People watch the firework festival both in person, and on TV. After the New Years, the town hall restart, elect new animals for some positions, and every member of town hall gives a short speech about the next year's plan. Some animals travel across the island in their spare time. (Like skiing in the Leaf-Fall Winter Snow Plaza).

There are none.

Time measurement has been banned and as such the general populace does not know when the New Year ticks over.

New Year’s Eve in United New England is commonly called First Night, a name that was coined in Boston in 1975. Cities and towns have celebrations that often include fireworks, concerts, parades, and various free activities. Part of the purpose of First Night is to provide alternatives to the excessive drinking of alcohol.

In Jeronma the 31th Dec. and 1st of Jan. are national holidays so most people do not have to work. On 31. Dec people usually start their day with doing their "runden" (eng. "round" or "tour") where they do a tour and visit their friends and family members who live near them. They visit them to say a last goodbye in the ending year and wish them to come good into the new year. Around 18:30 the most people meet up at somebodies home with their closest family and friends to prepare the meal. Traditional dinners are oil or cheese fondues, raclette or smoked eel/pike/carp with kraut and potato salad. Nearly everybody watches the Presidential New Years announcement at 19:15 in their group together. When the announcement ends the whole group drinks a "Jahrlingsschnaps" (A Beerbrand, a spirit made from beer with >45 vol. % Alc. which matures one year in a pine cask and is only for new years eve) and prosits goodbye to the ending year. After the dinner most groups talk and play cards or board games and consume alcoholic beverages and some smoke special cigars or pipes. At 23:59:40 the group starts to countdown from 20 to 0 mostly while watching or hearing a countdown broadcast in TV or radio. At 24:00 they have a toast with sparkling wine and Jahrlingsschnaps and say "Frohet neuet Jahr" (Happy new year) then everbody greets personal (Men shake hands; women kiss on cheeks; women and men kiss on cheeks and close friends or couples kiss on their mouth). Then people start to use firework (where it is allowed) or watch a public firework. At 01:30 most fireworks end and the people continue their party. On 1st. Jan. most people go to a special brunch which is called "Frühtschop" (Normal Brunch but where it is okay to drink beer and spirits ; Most Bars, Pubs or Restaurants offer Frühtschop on special holidays)

People don't have to work, kids don't have to go to school, etc. Kids go out to play in the snow, while adults ski and such. There are also fireworks and a bonfire party in town, and in Snowden Snow Park.

The Cities abound with parties of neighbors in overpartitions and public celebrations in the forum. Plazas and gardens host concerts and food festivals and light shows. In the largest halls are firework shows reminiscent of the old days. The new year celebration often includes significant amounts of public drinking and smoking before abating into heartfelt reflection on continued survival. It is a time to be thankful for one another for a successful year past and to set the tone for the next.

New year in Jajal is a public holiday, as the next 4 days after it. Although Jajal has a very lovely state-sponsored new year celebration program, most people go travelling in colder countries. Because it doesn't snow here. Celebrations generally include fireworks, concert of a well-known artist, demonstration of a winning artwork that was signed up to the national fine arts contest and free new year dinner in the place that the celebrations are held.

Both December 31 and January 1 are holidays, and people spend their time celebrating New Year with their friends, family or someone else that is important to them. Fireworks and pyrotechnics are banned since the rule of King Rodrigo the Great in 1992 due to some concerns over amputation, asthma, trauma and pet safety and as a replacement everyone is encouraged to use plastic trumpets or torotot as an alternative along with loud music, live band and dance festivals

The 30th of December (First Day/Unedjag) is a national holiday. On the 30th, many Eskaaijas hold a New Year's Dinner (Njer-Jeren Szené), as on the 31st, they will all be out partying, and they will not have time to eat formally with the family. A popular dish is Sentije Mér (Dish of the Sea) which consists of lobster, white bread, trout, tuna, herring and a thick, red tomato sauce called Piemenie, which is spread onto a thickly cut white bread from the local bakery. For dessert, Lepuje will be freshly baked. Lepuje is a thick crumbly biscuit which is topped by white chocolate chips.
On the 31st (Second day/Stúdjag), families with young children go to a festival (Féstivel/Festi) where there are multiple games to play. Older people, couples and singles go to the pub (Póre) to drink. In the evening, families sit on the sofa and have fizzy drinks with a bowl of salted popcorn each, and listen to the PM's New Year Speech (Njer-Jeren Dotjel) on the national broadcaster's main channel NTjE Un (Njational Tjelevisjun Eskaai). However, in the capital Prujat, the majority of families go out to watch the fireworks over the Grand River, or listen to the Winter Patrol's Marching Band. A massive Eskaaian flag is also raised at the parliament.
On the 1st of January (Drédjag/Third day), people will just have fun and watch the PM's Speech if they haven't already.
These 3 days are national holidays.

While January 1st is a Federal Holiday, Christmas Break means students are typically at home with their families; religious services may be attended by the observant prior to midnight, but at the clock counts down, firecrackers are lit up--with predictably painful results for anyone oblivious to safety precautions.

There are celebrations on a large, nationl/divisional scale, and celebrations on a family scale.

On a large scale, rituals are performed. There are regional rituals that are performed, each differing in each division, due to different cultures and time zones. The Eastern Divisions celebrate New Years first, then the Western Divisions celebrate last.

On a family scale, families get together and have massive dinners and parties.
Not to be mistaken for Suburbia.
