San Madrid is the county seat and largest city of Notre Amazonia County and a principal city of the San Madrid-Figueira Metropolitan Area, home to around 1.2 million people as of the 2015 census. The city is most notable for its mountainous topography and iconic winding, narrow streets as well as the city's famed historic streetcar/tram system.

The city is approximately 12.55 square miles and lies on the Atlantic coast and at the foot of the Selva Misionera Mountain Range.
