Military saluting protocol
A junior rank must salute a senior rank at all times except in a combat area.
A senior rank must return the salute of a junior rank except in a combat area.
In a confined area a junior rank must brace against a wall to allow the senior rank to pass whilst saluting, except in a combat area where the salute is not to be given.
Personal military salutes:
Right arm raised at a 45 degree angle palm down.
or
Right fist gently striking the left breast (commonly used in confined quarters like naval vessels or bunkers where the first type of salute is not practical).
Civilian salute:
Right hand palm inwards over left breast.
Aircraft salute.
The aircraft wobbles its wings slightly
Gun salute
Monarch: 21 guns
Visiting Monarch or head of state: 18 guns
Visiting head of government: 15 guns
National hero: 12 guns
Visiting national hero: 10 guns
Funeral of military personnel: 5 guns
The guns may be of any caliber but for safety reasons blank ammo will be used.
