Your Flavor of Socialism

Postby Letat » Fri Apr 09, 2010 8:29 am

This is obviously directed at nations that identify as communist, socialist, social-democratic, left-anarchist, or whatever. What is your nation's approach to socialism? How do you deal with questions of equality, productivity, democracy, markets, etc? What problems does your nation confront in building socialism?

The Workers' Federal Republic of Letat is a communalist and eco-conscious society. A federal government guarantees certain basic rights: the right to freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, the right to employment, the right to participate in public ownership, the right to education and the right to a clean environment. Most decisions, especially economic ones, occur at the level of cities or communes. Even national defense exists mostly in the form of community defense organizations, though a small Federal task force also exists. Letatians use currency and markets, but production is accomplished through Popular Directorates (Directorats Populaires or "les Dipos," in Letatian French) that operate on community levels. Dipos are worker- and community-owned. Communal representatives and workers elect managers and executives and endorse each Dipo's major plans. Dipos requiring national coordination become Associated Popular Directorates (Directorat Populaire Associé) or "Dipassos". Typically, Dipassos just set standards for production and common parts to be used.

Letat uses a republican model of government. Thus, most elections are to determine representatives: Dipo and Dipasso managerial teams and executive boards, communal administrations, National Assembly and Senate seats, and of course the Letatian Presidency. All political parties are legal. Suffrage is at 18 for all persons. One must be a citizen to vote in national elections, a resident of a commune to vote in communal elections, or a member of a Dipo/Dipasso to vote in economic elections. Direct democracy is rare, though referenda are sometimes convened for important questions. Generally, a referendum is conducted via community council, where a random drawing of residents are appointed to vote on an issue after a consideration period.

Letatian socialism has seen great success in environmental protection, healthcare provision, and equality; however, there are of course problems.

There are divides over whether Dipos should be more under the control of workers or more under the control of the community. There are many executives of Dipassos who would like to have more authority, and a great deal of inefficiency in Dipassos by comparison with capitalist corporations, that make such authority attractive. Communes and the federal government constantly bicker over who should have more control and more tax money, and over what Dipos should be subsidized. Communes vary widely among themselves in the extent of markets: Chevallois is perhaps indistinguishable from most capitalist towns, with a town center of small enterprises. By contrast, Jeuns is extremely radical - all money is turned over to the communal administration who purchases goods to distribute freely among residents as they need them. Most communes direct themselves somewhere in between.

The two most common complaints are too many elections and not enough things. There are those who feel that Letatians spend too much time voting and not enough time being productive, though this is contrary to Letatian civic virtue. There is also a somewhat legitimate complaint that Dipo production does not afford them all the wealth a capitalist corporation might. For example, Letat has only .2 cars per person (less than one car per family), and only 38% of households own a television set. The government claims, however, that Letatian socialism has provided everyone with necessities and some level of comfort.

We maintain the utmost faith that Letatian socialism will continue to strive forward in the years ahead.

The problems confronting socialism in the Russian Empire are many, ranging from the Gendarmie, the Okrhanka and the Third Division to centuries of education aimed at demonizing socialism and communism in all their forms, essentially putting Communism in the same light as fascism in the standard timeline of Earth.

Oh, and shooting socialists and communists, if the village peasants don't lynch them first for trying to drink their babies blood.

They do that, you know. Nothing a socialist loves more than the fresh blood of Christian babies. 8)

The United Socialist States of Sebastianalandia is a society organized around the principles of Marxism-Leninism. A central Government guarantees a single, unalianable right to all: "The fundemantal righ of all sentient persons is the freedom to say and believe 2 + 2 is equal to 4. Once that is granted, all else follows", ie, the right to say and be told the truth. The other 'rights' are granted, but no guaranteed. Freedom of religion is non-existant, as the right to be told the truth includes the right to not be influenced by religion.

Most decisions, especially economic ones, are made at the District level by workers' duputies (ie, the Soviets) and apointed officials. National defense is is handled by a national military, though each District also has a People's Militia. All major governmental work is handled by their respective People's Commissariats.

Sebastianalandians in urban areas make use of 'ration notes', currency in all but name. In rural areas, items are available for free, but stores are allowed to deny requests; disputes around these denials are resolved by the County Soviets.

Heavy industry and most major enterprises are Government-run and centrally-planned. Large areas of farmalnd (especially those growing cash crops) are given over to centrally-planned 'sovkhozy' (State Farms). The goal of all these is to propel the economy in the direction the State Planning Committee (all the economic Commissars meeting together) wants it to.
Medium industry and some major enterprises are under workers' self-management: managers and officials are elected (via secret ballot) by the workers themselves, and decisions are made collectively.
Minor enterprises (especially in rural areas) are run by their owners. They act more like community stores, though.

Sebastianalandia uses a model of government based on the dictatorship of the proletariat (also known as the worker's democracy). A County/Local Soviet, made up of recallable deputies (affiliation with the Party not necessary) is elected. The County Soviet sends deputies to the District Soviet, and the District Soviet sends deputies to the Provincial Soviet. Meanwhile, each District Soviet sends a certain number of deputies to the Supreme Soviet. The Supreme Soviet, plus delegations from the two autonomous Territories and a council of non-voting observers, forms the Parliament. The Supreme Soviet also serves as the Supreme People's Court for major court cases.

Suffrage is for all mentally stable citizens aged 14 or over. Only one political party is legal, the Communist Party of Sebastianalandia. However, Party membership is not a requirement for being elected to one of the Soviets.

Sebastianalandian socialism has seen great success in environmental protection, education, and economic equality; however, there have been problems with the system.

The greatest complaint is of a rather clumsy, overreacting command economy. As the central government ascts as a puppeteer pulling millions of strings, there is the occasional misshap: a glut of right-hand gloves rotting away in a warehouse, while long queues form for scarce left-hand gloves. Also, some consumer products are shodilly made (the drawback of their dirt-cheapness).
Also, the average Sebastianalandian houshold has far fewer domestic apliances and other luxouries than most capitalist countries.
And there has been some, stifled complaints against the massive penal camp system.

Despite its drawbacks, Sebastianalandian socialism has on the whole brought good for the nation, and is expected to endure for a long, long time, untill Sebastianalandian society is ready to enter Marx's final stage of pure communism...

Our flavour of socialism has little to do with ideology or philosophy. It's an offshoot of our tribal culture. For thousands of years, Fatatatutians have practiced collective ownership of land and collective responsibility for each other's welfare. More recent developments in the rest of the world have had little influence on Fatatatutti because we feel that they are finally catching up with us.

We do operate on the principle that the workers have a right to own the means of production but that too is an ancient principle. The farmer owns his sickle and the carpenter owns his hammer. We simply extend that to the auto workers owning their factory.

Otherwise, all resources are owned collectively by the people. There is little concept of private property and hence, little concept of theft. Refusal to lend an item that you are not using is considered one of the greatest social taboos.

Capitalism; the exact oposite of a Command economy, as Socialism is a Command Econonomic system, we do not pratice Socialism. However, a few minor communes do exist in JJ Place; most fail within the first few months of operating, and the largest only has around 650 members due to constrants forced by the lack of an overhead authority such as a government to expand the society, or, it does not have Capitalism and the binding that a Free Market gives to a society even without a government that keeps it together to contiue expanding beyond what a few people can easily manage. There are also serious flaws with each of the communes, especially noting the lack of true productivty and progress said productivity brings, in tern leading to a weak technology growth rate, and in turn, the society cannot move forward.

Postby Novikov » Fri Apr 09, 2010 9:20 pm

Novikov is currently experiencing a transition from a centrally planned economy to a more moderate approach to socialism, which incorporates aspects of the free-market. Most major industries are still under governmental control, but recent legislation which legalized small private enterprise (500 employees or less) in all fields has led to the rise of many private local businesses. In specific, this has allowed a massive increase in manufacturing sector jobs, as well as a trend from large state farms to smaller agricultural co-operatives. This has helped to curb Novikovs rampant unemployment, dropping from a peak 21.8% in 2004 to just 7.2% in 2010.

The government invests heavily into social welfare, providing all citizens with an economic 'safety net,' supplementing the income of those who fall below the accepted poverty line. Recent economic growth has raised the question as to whether this poverty line should be raised as the median income increases, but the government has fought such proposals in an effort to curb welfare costs. Significant funding is also directed towards social inequality. These programs generally focus on improved housing for urban residents and the promotion of regional or immigrant cultural groups. Novikov has developed a very strong system of public transport - mostly in our rail system, but also through city subways or trams - viewing cheap transportation as a means to greater social equality and improved economic strength.

The government also invests heavily into education. All schools in Novikov are public, including all universities. All schooling is free to the public, including universities, and students are selected for more prestigious or specialized schools based on national test scores. Education is provided in all three national languages (Russian, Slovak, and Czech), as well as in several minority languages (Novikovian, Polish, and Sorbic are common in various regional schools).

Very little funding currently goes to environmental protection. In fact, until recently, Novikov had no system in place to protect her natural resources. However, recent legislation has taken the initial steps towards creating a system of national parks and the newly-formed Bureau of Environmental Science is just beginning to monitor the environmental health of Novikov. IN the area of renewable resources alone has Novikov stood out, viewing renewable energy as a path to economic independence. Currently, over 10% of Novikov's power comes from renewable sources.

Income tax currently sits at 51%, with an increase to 53% for the highest income bracket. Basic civil rights, per the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, are guaranteed by the Novikovian Constitution. The govenment is a Parliamentary Democracy, with members elected directly using a plurality system. Elections are held every three years, and suffrage is guaranteed to all citizens 17 and older. All political parties are legal except the militant Free Nationalist Party, which has been linked to domestic terrorists, although no one party may legally hold more than 40% of the seats in Parliament.

We consider the Chrisman Union as social democratic country, with a strong sense of democracy and a lot of social security and nationalized health care. we believe that the govement must work for the people in which it was voted in by, so by providing the best health care and survices for the people, which are also run by them (eg, the head of a district police would be voted by the people, the head of a hosipital also would be down to public vote) we also believe when it comes to economy, everyone must advance, meaning no company should exploite it workers, everyone has a equaly say in the company.
