Remnant National NewsCensure Vote Passes Senate, Drake To Step Down
Olympia, URA, GRCS
On the opening day of the new session of the Remnant Senate, the agenda ranged from several topics such as recent economic downturns, military overabundance and modernizations, and increased outreach to allies. What many strategists and experts had feared, however, had come to pass, as the first item on the agenda as Speaker Nathan McGee opened the session was brought to the floor by a group of ten senators from the Remnant Survivalist Party(SPURA), which had just recently gained a majority in the Senate on September 21st. This item was a motion for a vote of no confidence and censure of President Gabriel Drake.
Liberal members of the Senate were stunned into silence as the Senate was called to order to discuss the motion. Discussion lasted for almost 3 hours as members of SPURA and the Olympia First Party(OFP) debated members of the Remnant Defensivist Party(RDP), the Sinican People's Alliance(SPA), and Remnant Worker's Party(RemCom). Chief among the speakers during discussion were Senate Majority Leader Nazar Mikhailov-SPURA, and Senate Minority Leader Jilian Anson-RDP. Debate ended when Senator Mikhailov motioned to move into voting, noting that most main discussion points had been exhausted. With a simply majority vote passing the motion, the Senate moved to a vote of no confidence in President Drake, which required a supermajority, or two-thirds vote. Supermajority based on the 960 Senators in attendance was set at 620. The final result of the Senate: 655-299-6. With every member of SPURA and OFP voting in favor, and many Independents voting in favor, the motion passed despite six Independents abstaining and the entirely of RDP, RemCom, and SPA in attendance voting against.
The result of the vote means that Gabriel Drake is expected to step down and resign from his positions as President of the United Remnant Avtarkiya and as Chairman of the Council of the Greater Remnant Cooperation Sphere. He is also expected to be stepping down soon thereafter from his position as Chairman of the Remnant Defensivist Party, according to insiders close to the President that have chosen to stay anonymous. As the President will be stepping down, it is expected that Vice President James Canis will be succeeding Drake as President of the URA and Chairman of the GRCS Council. Canis nor his advisors have been able to be reached for comment at this time of writing, but it is likely that changes to the Presidential Cabinet will be made in the coming weeks as the balance of power shifts noticeably and favorably for Survivalist members.
If President Drake steps down, this will be the first leadership change for the URA since Drake was elected president in 1995. This will also be the first time since before President Drake that a political party will hold the presidency, as Drake had made political parties unlawful from 1996 until it was revoked in 2017 amidst mounting pressure from conservative and nationalist factions. It is currently unclear if President apparent Canis will continue Drake's 2016 Presidential Order to indefinitely cancel the presidential election.
President Drake is expected to speak later tonight. This story will be updated as new developments arise.- Carson Andreinov, Senior Correspondent, RNN
