The nation also has a high income equality. As the right to public protest is seen essential, pro-communist groups are commonly seen on the streets.

While it would certainly be easy to simply say that our nation is pro-socialism, considering that the preamble to our nation's constitution calls for 'the establishment of a Socialist economic system', our official ideology is constitutionally defined as 'democratic market socialism', and our national motto is Liberty, Democracy, Socialism, in practice, it's not as simple as that.

Of the two major parties in our legislature, the Gandoor Communist Party and the New Democratic Party, only the Gandoor Communist Party is an explicitly pro-socialist party, with the official party platform declaring that the Communist Party will work towards the replacement of capitalism in Gandoor with a market-based socialist economic system wherein the means of production are owned by the workers in cooperatives. The New Democratic Party, on the other hand, while not anti-socialist, are a social democratic party who have no plans or desires to see capitalism replaced in our nation.

The two minor parties in the legislature, the People's Party of Gandoor and the Gandoor Freedom Group are both anti-socialist parties who wish to liberalize Gandoor's economy as they consider the mass of regulations designed to protect both workers and consumers detrimental to our economic growth.

Communism is a much harder thing to get a good grasp on what our nation thinks of it. As stated above, one of our major parties is the Gandoor Communist Party, but the party ceased being an actual communist party in 1931 and is merely a socialist party now. There are no officially communist parties operating in our nation and many citizens would consider an ideal goal for humanity but one that is impossible to attain due to human nature. Many citizens of Gandoor, however, have or had a negative view of most declared communist states such as the Soviet Union, China, North Korea, etc, which was not because of any inherent distaste for communism, but rather due to our nation's strong commitment to democracy and liberty as well as frustration when we would occasionally be lumped in with them despite our nation being officially non-aligned (both before, during, and after the Cold War).

Regardless of what our nation's official views are, as the constitution protects the freedom of expression, there are no laws mandating adherence to socialism or any ideology and, similarly, people who are opposed to socialism have their rights as citizens protected and can express their views without facing government oppression.

During the Cold War, revolutionaries backed by the Soviet Union attempted to overthrow our government and establish a Socialist Republic of an Islamic World during a civil war which lasted from 1976 until 1983. After the war, we began a process of purging the government and society of socialist/communist influence and expelled all officials from Eastern Bloc nations and their allies.

Socialist and communist parties have been banned since 1985 and the punishment for attempting to create one is up to 25 years imprisonment.

We don't persecute people for their political beliefs for the same reason that we don't burn witches. Both are based on meaningless, antiquated rituals that might give the practitioner a temporary sense of power and connection, but can't change anything in the real world, so must be ultimately harmless.

The OPR is pretty firmly capitalist, and so our government tends to look upon communist and socialist regimes with some degree of uneasiness. However, they're almost universally regarded to be better than the theocratic, genocidal Universal Covenant of Man ^{which is also secretly an alien puppet state}, so the OPR's government generally tries to remain on reasonably good terms with leftist states.

In terms of internal politics, there's no formal repression of people for being communist (or of any ideology, for that matter). The OPR has three main far-left parties, all of which are pretty insignificant politically:

- the Orion Popular Front, which is a loose and often fractious coalition of libertarian socialist groups (mainly anarchists, anarcho-communists, and syndicalists)
- Orion Vanguard Action, an authoritarian socialist party in the Soviet/Marxist-Leninist tradition.

The above two factions have a long-running and bloody feud with each other that has attracted the attention of FEDPOL on multiple occasions due to the fact that it's actually resulted in a couple of murders.

- the Cybernetic Socialist Party, which advocates a form of almost hive-like collectivism and radical mutualism. It's strongly disliked even by the other two parties as being Orwellian-leaning and verging on Hive Mind-esque levels of control. They are arguable the least relevant of the far-left parties, and many classify the CSP as more of a cult.

The Republic is technically a post-communist state, with the rule of the Communist Party ending in 1957. The Communist Party of Kihdis (ML) is considered to be the direct successor of the party of that era, and averages 3-5% in national elections since the 1970s. They exist mostly as a nostalgia party, and are shrinking each year as older citizens die and younger ones join other parties. Marxism-Leninism is what usually comes to citizens' minds when "communism" is discussed, and it is generally met with indifference or moderate respect. The real opposition to communism comes solely from some independent politicians and the Liberal-Democratic Party. The state has never issued a ban or promotion of the ideology since the 1957 democratic revolution.

Communists are not persecuted in the government, and many of the older members of the Communist Party (who are still in the Assembly, anyway) are respected as life-long servants to the Republic and to discourse. Public opinion of the communist era can be summed up as this: it was good to happen at the time it did, but Marxism-Leninism should not run Kihdis again. More liberal politicians and figures, of course, dispute this. It's an ongoing conversation.

As for the ruling party, its own Republican ideology is directly related to the proto-socialist roots of the modern republic. From 1877 to 1924, a strong-armed government ruled the people in the name of the people themselves, and attempted to enact broad land and wealth redistribution with great success. Today the Republicans can be considered to be left-wing nationalists, with the economic ideals of party members ranging from a full command economy to Keynesianism. Socialism is very well received by the public.
