In Akrosian society, people are serially monogamous, that is, they marry someone of either sex for five-year terms, the marriage expires rather than ending in divorce, any children are under joint-custody, and possessions acquired during the marriage are divided as equitably as possible. Remarriage is quick, so alimony is basically non-existent, too, and commissioners rather than courts oversee the division of assets and formal dissolution of marriage. Marriage can be same-sex or opposite-sex, too. Five years are deemed to be the optimal amount of time to reduce marital infidelity and decrease both boredom and tedium.

As at most your first spouse might be a virgin upon marriage, something by no means assured, there is literally no point to a "purity ball" to favor abstinence prior marriage. This must be one of those barbaric foreign practices of countries with more ascetic religious beliefs, and frankly smacks of father-daughter incest, something strictly banned due to the dangers of consanguinity producing deformed offspring.

On the other hand, we've been known to issue citations and fines to people who commit adultery, so we do have our own taboos. The whole system and our moral code is designed with public health in mind and reducing expensive divorce court cases. Monogamy is encouraged during marriage and remarriage is strongly encouraged to reduce the risk of spreading STDs. This does tend to result in more rich people committing adultery than poor people, but then the genetic benefit from their ability to produce wealth passing down to the next generation somewhat offsets the transmission of STDs.

It should be noted that either at forty years of age, or at the end of one's last marriage after forty, whichever comes last, one is deemed to have "retired from social matrimony," and is pronounced single again. Singles are generally encouraged to mate only with other singles of or above the legal age of majority (18), which has the benefit of providing sexual mentoring to young adults, limiting the spread of STDs, and discouraging extramarital affairs. After all, if you know that you'll be free to pursue your wilder fantasies once you retire from the marriage scene, you're more likely to keep it in your pants and on your bucket list than to risk paying fines and receiving citations from the Health Police.
