What is the general social attitude to suicide? It's increasingly being viewed as a problem. Welfare organizations and even the government are taking an increasing role in trying to prevent suicide among the population, establishing more funding for national suicide prevention measures such as a hotline or mental health services. Sadly, this is still such a new change in attitude that older generations are still very much of the opinion that suicides cannot be helped.

What are the primary causes known for suicide? The top reason is a feeling of societal incompetence --- people feel as though they cannot fit in with society. They can't get the nice job or the nice family that everyone else has, and they feel alienated. Another common reason is a feeling of loneliness: in a society that prizes family and social contact, people who feel lonely and don't have as much of a social network tend to feel very alienated.
Is suicide disproportionately linked to an ethnic group, social class, or sex? Women are slightly more likely to commit suicide in Nui-ta. Among social classes, the rates have equalized relatively over the past 20 years. Among ethnic groups, ethnic Hadinians are far, far more likely to commit suicide (due to lack of ability to assimilate, and among the older population, high rates of untreated PTSD is a unique reason).
