Other Information:
The Shikonjimanese Ryou was introduced by January 1, 1922, replacing the centuries old Kashu after its inflation crisis. The name derives from ryou, 'dragon', a national symbol of Shikonjima, which can also be seen on the coins. The Kirechan is a thousandth of a Ryou's value.
The Ryou has undergone multiple changes, mostly following economic crises - after the 1970s crisis, the metal standard got abolished; the 1980s crisis led to four denominations getting done away with. In 2008, a huge number of foreign exchange reserves was acquired, the bound, fixed exchange rate to which got abolished in 2012. Since then, the currency has faced a period of slight deflation, which is being fought on via more money being sent into circulation, therefore causing an artificial inflation.
All currency units are given out and maintained by the Royal Shikonjimanese National Bank, which is nationalized.
