by Shamsiyya
Full Name of Nation: The Federal Republic of Shamsiyya
Official Name of Currency: Guinea
Currency Symbol/Abbreviation: SYG, Gn, G.
Year of Adoption: 1902.
Did It Replace An Older Currency? If So, What Currency Did It Replace?: The Shamsiyyan Dinar.
Subunits of Currency: 1 Guinea = 10 Dirham = 1000 Millim.
Current Denominations of Currency (Coins): 5 Millim, 10 Millim, 25 Millim, 50 Millim, 1 Dirham, 5 Dirham, 1 Guinea.
Current Denominations of Currency (Banknotes): 5 Guineas, 10 Guineas, 20 Guineas, 50 Guineas, 100 Guineas.
Former Denominations of Currency (Coins): 1 Millim, 2 Dirham, 2 Guineas (all abolished in 1971).
Former Denominations of Currency (Banknotes): 200 Guineas, 500 Guineas (both abolished in 2005).
Images of Currency: (coming soon).
Current Exchange Rate with USD/NSD: 1 SYG = 1.82 NSD. 1 NSD = 0.55 SYG (or 5 Dirham and 50 Millim, or 550 Millim).
Other Information:
Guinea coins are made of an alloy (72% gold, 20% copper, 5% zinc, 3% aluminium); the 1 Guinea coin has a weight of 8.80 grams. The Dirham coins have a weight of 6 grams (1 Dirham), or 10 grams (5 Dirham) and have a similar makeup of metals as the Guinea, but using silver instead of gold and iron instead of zinc. The Millim coins are made up of 80% copper, 15% iron and 5% aluminium; the 10 Millim coin has a weight of 2 grams, 25 Millim has 5 grams, 50 Millim has 7.60 grams.
The Guinea (in Shamsiyyan gineh) got introduced in 1902 after the Dinar Crisis at the turn of the century. Unlike most other countries between the World Wars, the Shamsiyyan National Bank has not given up on the Resource Standard, but, instead, introduced a New Dinar as a parallel currency for foreign trade, a fiat currency independent from the Guinea - and vice versa. Both currencies managed to even survive the collapse of the Bretton-Woods-System in the early 1970s - but not the Copper Crisis, after which several, less meaningful denominations were discarded. Another notable change was the abolition of 200 and 500 SYG banknotes in 2005, mainly for security reasons, but also to take some paper money out of circulation, as this has to be entirely covered by metal resources (which the FRS still mines a lot of). One year later, the Dinar got abolished and replaced by the NS$ as a currency for international business, which made foreign trade easier and opened Shamsiyyan markets without giving up the independence of the Guinea from the global currency market, which also makes it relatively crisis-proof. The Shamsiyyan National Bank is nationalized.
