OP/Description: The Commonwealth is in an alternate history where the development of the world happened differently. What is the Internet (Interweb) also developed differently, but along similar technological lines. Picket phones (cellular phones) became popular in the early 60s (as there was no Ma Bell to stifle innovation). Platforms like Geo-Polis and Settler in the 1970s when personal computers became affordable for the middle class allowed each person to develop and have their own website. Most people have their own household server such that every household node is its own social media gateway. Coupled with the compu-phone (smart phone) craze of the 1980s, every person became and is their own Facebook and Twitter. Analogs to social media platforms are either search engines (indexers) and public nodes called Fora and treated as public forums by the Basic Law.

Most families and individuals host their own home servers and fully control their own shell accounts. They are for all intents and purposes their own decentralized social networking platforms protected under an analog of the 1st Amendment.

Unlike RL, in this world there are several competing protocols for the information space of the Internet. Most popular is HTTP and HTTPS of World Wide Web Consortium and the HTML 5 Standards. FTP2S descendant of FTP is a very distant second. Still in marginally in use to a large extent by enthusiasts and hobbyists are version 12.1 of NNTP (of the former UUCP) that came out of the Usenet Era. An up and coming contender is VRCP (Virtual Reality Cybernetic Protocol) and its ominous Matrix schema of direct neurological input/output affordable only by the most opulent of world society.

The content of the Internet is treated as a form of correspondence and under the oversight of the Post Office. All users of the Internet are taught from Primary School to encrypt their data, and use only secure transmission of their Internet usage. When this is done it is considered private.

Deliberate non-encrypted transmission of personal data by that person is usually considered evidence of non-private intent, though not evidence of intent for public domain usage. An explicit written (not digital) contract must be signed by a person for any other party such as Facepalm, Twibber or Yousertube to use their personal information and effects for their own purposes. Data mining without explicit written contractual approval is a felony subject to 1-5 years hard labor upon conviction.

Email is considered a personal effect. Therefore, a warrant must be obtained under suspicion of criminal activity upon advisement of an independent grand jury. Criminal correspondence is not protected at all—conspiring to commit force or fraud, or inciting criminal activity.

Marketing companies masquerading as search engine providers (Goggle, Yazoo!, Bling, etc) are viewed with suspicion.

There is no darkweb vs lightnet distinction in Narland. One either behaves lawfully or they do not. Those who act morally stupid are disciplined to education and diligence. Those who are criminally insane generally become wards of the state (if not outright felons) and denied further Internet access. Following due process the instruments of criminal activity (servers, computing devices) and its expression (harm to a child, infamous murder, etc.) are confiscated and removed from the Internet.

Everyone is taught from a young age to encrypt everything, and jealously guard their personal data. Unsecured operating systems did not flourish. Hardened 'Nix type systems are ubiquitous. Malware exists but it is rare and must be tailored to specific individual targets. Rootkits however uncommon can be devastating.

Everyone is advised to keep their own stuff on their own servers (computers/computing devices). The "cloud" is a term used by unscrupulous businessmen to get others to use "push" technology to form a codependent relationship. Those silly enough to put their stuff on other people's/businesses' servers do so at their own risk.

When the world wide web first went up in 1990, the people of the Reich had unlimited access to any information on the internet. Nachfolgians could research, email, and chat at their own leisure. This unbridled access led to many problems in a short time.

Nachfolgians were subject to online criticism of their country and how it viewed the rest of the world. This led to various flame wars and public outcry for the destruction of the Reich and its "evil" ideology. People who had never met a Nachfolgian suddenly became "experts" on how Nachfolgian culture and how they should change their " backwater" ways.

The Reichstag, seeing all this unfold, put plans into effect to deal with the criticism. The, then, Obersterfuhrur Dietrich von Sturmgeist proposed a bill to limit Nachfolgian access to the internet. Two short years after the internet was invented, the Reichstag passed the Detrimental Information Limitation Act, banning all access to websites that do not favor Nachfolgian doctine. The act also called upon the Propaganda Division of the SS to create websites and content that did no violate the act, thus creating a wide range of government run websites.

As our nation diverged from OTL in the late 1910s, the entire timeline of computer technology has been radically different. Our internet-analog is in many ways decades behind when compared to the internet, existing instead as a network of local intranets connected via the Australic Syndicated Intranet network. Connections to other international networks exist but are few and far between. Computers are now reasonably commonplace within Australic households, though in any case a connection to the ASI network can be found in every commune's centre, most libraries, and most educational institutes.

The usage of our intranet is mostly for education, information archival, and bureaucratic means. Due to the organisation of our society, there is little need for social media for local socialising, and telecommunications - or even physical mail - is still by far the prefered method of contacting and communicating with those further away.

That said, e-mail services are available and expanding, especially for those who do wish to utilise the few international connections. One's email would typically be assigned to them upon request by their commune or syndicate, and likewise follow the format of either [first initial][last name]℅[commune] or [first initial][last name]℅[syndicate]. Government emails would use the format [first initial][last name]℅[government institution] unless they fell under the purview of either of the two previous issuers. Not enough people use email for there to have been a duplicate yet.

The closest thing to a social media platform that exists here would be forums. The previous Labor government oversaw the allowance for individuals to apply to operate intranet sites, as this had previously been restricted to government, syndicate, and registered community groups. Whilst forums already existed, for more mundane or general topics, the permission for individuals to create them allowed for intranet communities to develop around many more niche topics.

Images, video, and audio are not able to be uploaded to the intranet - it's all text-based - so for good and ill personal sharing of media via the intranet is very difficult if not impossible for most. Additionally, usage of the internet is not anonymised, though neither can one citizen request access to the browsing history of another short of what they can search for themselves on common sites. Adult content, or at least that which can be expressed via text, is allowed, as those under the age to access such things can be very easily prevented from doing so.

In terms of usage, these following sites are the five most popular social sites in Australia, though keep in mind even the most popular are used by a very small portion of the population.

• Ausfiction: A site originally created for the sharing of amateur works of fiction, but now consolidated to include forum spaces for at least half a dozen of the most popular literary and film franchises. Do note that whilst patronage of the site is not anonymous, it (as well as many writing and roleplay sites) does give uploaders the ability to use pen names, character names, or publish anonymously, which is congruent with regulation.
• Textquests: The most popular text-based roleplaying site, a consolidation of - like Ausfiction - many of the most popular individual roleplay sites.
• Quizzic: The most popular place to ask and argue questions on the intranet, with plenty of topical subforums.
• Cupidchat: An adult chat forum.
• Historiae Australis: The primary history, politics, current events, and historical speculation forum.

Outside of this are the numerous community forums (each commune has one), smaller forums of all varieties, personal sites, educational sites, and classifieds which all have social media elements. Nothin of the likes of Facebook or Twitter has been conceived yet, and the text-only nature of the intranet precludes those like YouTube and Instagram.
