Code: Select all

When did you adopt this system of measurement?
If your nation has changed measurement systems, what was your previous measurement system?
Are there any exceptions to the usage of your current measurement system?

Name of Nation: The Empire of Aikoland
What measurement system does your nation use? The metric system is utilised in Aikoland.
When did you adopt this system of measurement? Our nation began to adopt the metric system in the mid-19th century and it became the sole legally recognised system of units in 1871.
If your nation has changed measurement systems, what was your previous measurement system? Prior the adoption of the metric system, Aikolandais customary units were used as the official measurement system in Aikoland. Aikolandais customary units were only created in 1738 as a standardised replacement for the various regional measurement systems. During the period of adoption, the definition of Aikolandais customary units were redefined in terms of the metric system. (Examples: The Aikolandais pied, or foot, was redefined to being 30cm from 28.7cm and the Aikolandais livre, or pound, was redefined to being 500g from 487.6g)
Are there any exceptions to the usage of your current measurement system? Despite the metric system being the only legally recognised measurement system, the usage of feet for measurement of altitude in aviation contexts, as well as the usage of nautical miles and knots for air and marine navigation is retained, as those are considered the international standards in their contexts.

Name of Nation: Andocara
What measurement system does your nation use? Officially it's a metric country
When did you adopt this system of measurement? 1970
If your nation has changed measurement systems, what was your previous measurement system? Before the metric system, Andocara used Customary Imperial Units, just like the u.s.
Are there any exceptions to the usage of your current measurement system? Yes, the imperial system is still used in some areas today. Speed limits are posted in mph, gas is sold in miles per gallon, people tell their weight in pounds, and their height in feet and inches, despite formal documents showing their weight and height in kg and cm respectively. Informal (non government) documents displays weight and height in imperial units. Road distances are also given in miles and when someone talks about how far they've traveled, or how far away two places are from one another, they give the distance in miles. Many Andocarian Weather outlets show temperatures in Kelvin, not Fahrenheit or Celsius (though Celsius is used frequently in oral speech). Some outlets show the temperature in Kelvin alongside with Celsius.

Name of Nation:
What measurement system does your nation use? Metric
When did you adopt this system of measurement? French-dominated Brésil adapted the metric system during the French Revolution. Portuguese-dominated Maragnan adapted the metric system late during the 19th century.
If your nation has changed measurement systems, what was your previous measurement system? Previously, both Brésil and Maragnan used French and Portuguese customary units respectively. In general, both systems used an equivalent of hands and feet as units of measuring length.
Are there any exceptions to the usage of your current measurement system? The only major exception lies in informal systems of measurement, used in places where tools such as rulers are not readily available or precision is unimportant. For example, a thumb could be used to measure an inch (French: pouce; Portuguese: polegada). When in communication with US aviation agencies, US measurements of distance

Name of Nation: The Democratic Republic of Gandoor
What measurement system does your nation use? Metric
When did you adopt this system of measurement? Our nation's process of metrication began with the passage of the Metrication Act 1935 and ended with the Metric Act 1952.
If your nation has changed measurement systems, what was your previous measurement system? The previous measurement system in our nation was the Gandoorese Standard Units. Gandoorese Standard Units were derived from English customary units and, since 1841, were identical to British Imperial units. Both Gandoorese Standard Units and metric units were legally recognized between 1935 and 1952.
Are there any exceptions to the usage of your current measurement system? Usage of feet, nautical miles, and knots is retained for aviation and marine navigational purposes, as is the international standard.

Does your nation use Penal Battalions for military service?: Yes.

What crimes can make you eligible for penal service?:
bookmaking, certain forms of forgery, contempt of court, dangerous driving, military disciplinary offences.

How many men in your military currently serve as penal troops?: 3.4% of troops.

Describe the roles penal troops play in your military?: sappers, porters, infantrymen

Are penal troops given any training?: yes, in fact they are given longer basic training (extra drilling to encourage military discipline).

Describe the relationship between Penal Troops and Normal Soldiers. How would they cooperate on the field?: They would mostly cooperate very well though many officers would be snobbish to penal troops.

How well are Penal troops equipped compared to Normal Soldiers?: the same.

How do conditions of Penal Troops compare to those of Normal Soldiers?: the same except they receive lower pay (unless transferred into regular units which pay well, usually for bravery or long service, they are paid minimum wage).

Follow-up to viewtopic.php?t=497344, which I feel I could not post in due to the gravedig rule. Feel free to move this post there if it is sufficient new content.

1. Does your nation have nuclear weapons? Yes.

a) How and when did your nation acquire nuclear weapons? Minoa’s first nuclear tests were carried out on 27 September – 22 October 1956, during the final years of the communist government (1944-1960). The Hungarian revolution had just spilled over into Minoa, and the communists were implementing reforms under public pressure, before ultimately agreeing to a transition to democracy in 1957.

It is widely believed that Minoa’s nuclear weapons programme ultimately prevented both the Soviet Union and the United States from invading Minoa throughout the Cold War. However, Minoa’s anti-nuclear movement has a massive following, and today’s politicians are generally nuclear-sceptic: as in, they know nuclear weapons are bad, but getting rid of them could make Minoa vulnerable to foreign interference.

b) How large is your nation's nuclear arsenal? 1,250 weapons.

c) Has your nation ever detonated a nuclear weapon in war? Minoa came very close to detonating one over the Vatican in 2017.

There was a disastrous tower block fire in Athens (a week before Grenfell), and the unlawful and deadly response by Dafni Borough Council against the protesters resulted in a city-wide civil war, due to Minoa’s long-standing problem with revenge culture (just like in Albania). At the time, Dafni Borough Council was under the right-wing New Democracy, with an informal confidence and supply agreement by two far-right Hellenic Nationalist councillors, since 2016.

The two-week civil-war came amid really high tensions between Minoa and the Vatican, due to the sex abuse scandals, and there was a false rumour (traced to Neo-Nazi trolls in France) that the Vatican had demanded Minoa to "forgive and forget" the council for the illegal crackdown. In reality, the Vatican was upset with the crackdown and called for calm.

Two nuclear technicians, with undisclosed connections with the Communist Party of West Minoa, took the false rumour as a cue to launch a 500-kiloton nuclear missile at the Vatican in revenge, but the missile was not activated and crashed into the Pontifical Ethiopian College without exploding. However, 685 people died in the resulting stampedes in Rome, making it one of the deadliest in modern Italy.

Unsurprisingly, the civil war became Minoa and Italy versus Dafni and its far-right militias who came to support them. Dafni quickly lost, and the nuclear technicians, the leadership of Dafni, and numerous people of involved militias are serving whole life in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity through systematic negligence.

Minoa has since made a peace agreement with the Vatican, and started keeping its nuclear weapons separate from its missiles. Dafni was returned to civilian rule after Anarchists inspired by Freetown Christiana won a narrow victory in 2018, and has been developing a semi-autonomous intentional community.

d) Has your nation made any commitments to limit or reduce its nuclear arsenal? Yes. Minoa is one of the five powers in the NPT, and as late as the mid-1980s, we had a peak of 3,500 weapons. The last major cut came after the civil war, with 500 weapons disposed unilaterally in the aftermath of the 2017 civil war.

2. Does your nation use nuclear energy? Yes

a) How much of your energy supply comes from nuclear sources? about 16.3% in 2019. However, renewable energy is slowly eating into the share of energy generation.

b) Have there ever been any accidents at a nuclear power plant in your country? Quite a few minor incidents, and they were costly and had a bad impact on public opinion.

c) How does your nation deal with the issue of nuclear waste? Nuclear waste is treated in one of the few Nuclear Waste Treatment Sites, which is a combination of wet and dry cask storage. It is costly, so it is no wonder why there is a lot of pressure to switch to solar and wind, which is an ongoing effort.

As Indian Empire was ruled by the Danish during this time, they converted to the metric system at the same time that Denmark did.

Why?
How has this changed?

What is the government attitude to sociology in YN?:
The official stance of the government is that it is generally biased and is “more an ideology than an academic subject.”.
The government say that “human beings and their societies can be studied through other subjects like psychology, anthropology, philosophy and history.”

is it encouraged, discouraged, mandatory, banned or treated with complete neutrality?:
Teaching it as a school subject to anyone under seventeen is banned whilst teaching it to seventeen year olds and older is in universities discouraged
(State-funded universities don’t but a university can if it had no state-funding).

Why?:
Because most sociology is biased in favour of certain ideologies.

How has this changed?:
Prior to 1958, the government had no official stance on sociology.
A Munkcestrian-ruled “Islamic” city not based on my views.
See canon NS policies in fact-books.

What is the government attitude to sociology in YN, is it encouraged, discouraged, mandatory, banned or treated with complete neutrality?:
Generally discouraged, though of course nothing is seen as wrong with teaching criminology to young people who aspires to be police officers, Guardia Civil personnel (officers or enlisted) or judges.

Why?: Due to Marxist bias and the role of sociology in activism in favour of people who violently attacked Guardia Civil officers and even the women they loved.

How has this changed?:
Sociology used to be viewed as socially acceptable.

Measurement Systems Survey

Postby Pirusavia » Wed Aug 25, 2021 6:39 am

Name of Nation: Federal People's Republic of Pirusavia

What measurement system does your nation use? Metric

When did you adopt this system of measurement? Officially used starting in 1906, a year after the Republican Revolution.

If your nation has changed measurement systems, what was your previous measurement system? Before the adoption of metrics in 1905, the Pirusavian customary measurements were the official measurement system as imposed by the Imperial government. It is consisted of:

Length and area:
Barkhi (minuscule length; 1 barkhi = 3.62 cm)
Verr (medium length; 1 verr = 48.3 cm)
Lyves (vast length; 1 lyves = 427.9 m)
Uspa (enormous length; 1 uspa = 189 km)
Guras (field area; 1 guras = 1.33 ha)

Volume
Samgari (1 samgari = 247 mL. Samgari was usually used for measuring liquids.)
Veptar (1 veptar = 1x1x3 verr. Veptar, as opposed to samgari, was used for measuring hollow volume, e.g. the volume of an empty barrel.)

Weight
Katka (1 katka = 3.5 grams)
Tatka (1 tatka = 0.87 kg)
Shevcha (1 shevcha = 112 kg)

Due to the incredibly complicated system of measurements, combined with inconsistencies, the Pirusavian customary measurements were losing popularity during the mid-19th century especially amongst the urban workers, which pushed the demands of metrication.

Are there any exceptions to the usage of your current measurement system? In aviation, the imperial length and speed measurement (feet and knots) is the most commonly used system, despite the metric being the sole recognised measuring system. Following 1952, however, measurements for weights and volumes in aviation was made to be strictly metric to prevent confusion, especially while refuelling and calculating cargo weight.
