It is a crime for a woman to procure an miscarriage in Great Nortend. This has been interpreted by the courts in light of the papal bull of 1591 and traditional definitions of quickening and “carriage”. The law was stated with some definity by the Court of Counsellours in its 1943 decision in R v. Maythrone, Hil. 40 Edm. IX. Lord Oscham, who gave the leading judgment, stated:
“The offspring of carnal knowledge is not a reasonable man before the stage of quickening, whereupon it gaineth a reasonable soul by the grace of God, and more still is a mere vegetative organism before ensoulment as a sensitive corpus.”

This distinction between the “vegetative organism”, the “sensitive corpus” and the “reasonable foetus”, is crucial in determining the legality of an abortion. Upon quickening, an abortion is deemed the procuration of a miscarriage occasioning the manslaughter of a rational man in rerum natura, a felony. Upon ensoulment but before quickening, an abortion is the procuration of a miscarriage occasioning death. This is only a misdemeanour. Before ensoulment, there is no procuration of a miscarriage, as there is not even a corpus to carry. It thus becomes the mere moral wrong of waste, which is punishable by a fine.

There are defences available, including reasonable self-protection or lawful cause (such as for legally sanctioned eugenics programmes), depending on the level. The defence of mens corrupta is also available.

If a rich person is charged with a serious crime, it is common to charge them also with money laundering, which means that all their money is taken/frozen meaning that they can't afford a good lawyer to defend themselves in court. They are then offered a plea bargain or can take a chance and face a very severe sentence if found guilty.

Lendert is the centre for Erbonian men's tailoring (and women's I suppose). Whilst each tailor has his own style, the general style of Nortan coats and trousers tends towards an ideal silhouette promoted by the Guild of Tailors. Most men's lounge coats have a moderately padded shoulder, slightly rounded, narrow waist, short skirt just covering the behind, and closed quarters. Both cut collars (notched lapel) and pointed collars (peak lapel) are seen, depending on the formality of the suit. Most suits are cut with three buttons, but summer suits often have two buttons only. Buttons are placed fairly closely together, at ⅑th of the coat length apart.

Trousers are cut high to the waist, usually with single pleats, falling with a taper. They are usually worn with braces.
