Stereotype:
Glevenscestrians are hicks

Where it originated from:
Many Glevenscestrians are farmers.

How true it is: it is true that Glevenschester is predominantly rural but another aspect of the hick stereotype is not true: people are educated.
Basically a Gloucestershire City-state but a republic with no nobles.

Good Friday in Great Nortend is the most sombre holy day in the state and church calendars. It is the first day of the “Still Days” of Still Week, the Nortish term for Holy Week. Good Friday marks the Crucifixion and Death of Christ, and as such is a day of mourning upon which there is no trade or commerce allowed, little vehicular traffic or travel, and no alcohol, entertainment, recreation, secular music or games. It is also a day of fasting. Radio stations broadcast only religious services and music of the Passion and some news bulletins and weather reports on this day. It is customary to wear mourning dress in black and white or sombre colours on Good Friday until Easter Even.

Good Friday is marked by the Church of Nortend with a Mass. This Mass has no Introit, Kyrie, or Gloria. After the entrance of the Ministers in black vestments, the Mass begins with the Collect and then a Prophecy from Hosea. Following this is a Tract, and then a History from Exodus replacing the Epistle, which is also followed by a Tract. Then there follows the singing of the Passion according to St. John, sung in three parts. At the Death of Christ, the Paternoster, the Ave Maria and In manus tuas are said silently while all kneel. After the end of the Passion, the Deacon immediately begins the Gospel. Following the Sermon, the Bidding consists of the ancient Solemn Prayers. The Priest bids prayers for the Church, for the King, for Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Clerks and all Christians, for Catechumens, for them in need, for Hereticks and Schismaticks, for the Jews and for the Heathen and Infidels.

Unlike Roman and Eastern practice, there is no Worship of the Cross nor a “Mass of the Presanctified”. Instead, the holy Sacrament is confected on Good Friday as usual, and a second large Host is also consecrated at the same time. The Paternoster is sung, but there is no Agnus Dei or Pax. Holy Communion it is not given to the other ministers or laity, and only the Priest receives. The Thanksgiving is replaced by a Collect. The Mass ends forthwith, with no further prayers or blessings.

On Good Friday, there are also sung the ordinary offices of the day—Mattins, Tierce, Vespers and Compline. Mattins and Vespers are adapted from the ancient service of Tenebres, albeit much altered. Of note are the Lamentations of Jeremiah which are sung from Vespers of Still Wednesday to Mattins of Easter Even as the first lesson. Before Vespers on Good Friday the altar and sanctuary are stripped bare of ornament (unlike in other traditions when they are stripped on Maundy Thursday after the Mass). After the hanging pyx is taken down, the Priest takes the second Host in the pyx to the Easter Sepulchre of the church where it is ceremonially “buried” and censed. A candle is left burning at the Sepulchre, kept watch over by the laity until Easter morning. Meanwhile, Vespers begins with the anthem, In pace idipsum.

The newly-created language that is called Newspeak is gradually being integrated into the Orwell Society, utilizing the simplicity of combining words such as "double" and "think" to form words like "doublethink", which is a term for two contradicting statements/ideologies are upheld by one mind, basically a spin on the concept of hypocrisy. The Ministry of Truth is hard at work in the development of this language, which, when adopted by future generations, would greatly deteriorate thought crime and thrust the Society one step closer to the founding fathers' vision of a one-mind populace - no one defying the ideals of the government, everyone free of thought crimes.

If so, is this describer accurate? Depending on interpretation, either as pure state capitalism, transitionary stage, or the early stage of communist construction where many capitalist elements remain

Regardless of official describers, which mode of production or economic system dominates your society? This is up for discussion, so I will leave two forms

Is property in your nation owned collectively in some fashion? Yes, through state ownership and collective-group ownership

Does your nation retain market mechanisms? Yes

Please place an X in the boxes that best describe your nation's socialist practices.

Is there a state at all? Yes

Do workers own and control their own workplaces? Usually there is control only through public institutions

Does the nation seek to expand socialism beyond its own borders? No

Does your state have an interpretation of socialism that retains private property? Yes, as officially the socialist phase has arrived, which is in its early stage

Would you describe the nation as revolutionary, pacifist, or authoritarian/totalitarian?authoritarian and non-interventionist

Does your nation's economy operate on a market system with private property? Yes

Are economic and political concerns considered separate matters? No

Does your nation operate on a barter economy? No

Is the state dedicated to defending capitalism? No

Does the state wish to spread capitalism beyond its own borders? No

Does the state own any public industry, and if so, does it operate under the same market mechanisms as private property? Yes, usually within the framework established by the central authority

Is the political system controlled by the bourgeoisie, a bureaucracy, democratic representatives, a monarch, or other group or individual? the Party officials

Is this a good factbook for the hsitory of my nation?

Postby Lashyr » Sun May 15, 2022 9:34 am

Is this a good factbook entry for the history fo my nation? What can I change?

Lashyr was discovered by Pinefeld Lasher 900 years ago just south of the equator. But unlike the many tropical islands around the area, Lashyr is a mountainous, vastly untropical region dominated by temperate grasslands and rough seas perfect for trout fishing. To towards the middle of Lashyr is the Edge River, which along it's banks holds the majority of Lashyrian populace. During the building period of Lashyr, many tribes were forced out of their homelands and made to be edcucated by the newcomers. But the new way of life became home for the tribemembers until a Tyrant took over. Since his takeover 400 years ago, the kingdom of Lashyr is solely based on economics and less on rights of citizens.

It's a nice synopsis. If you want to expand, go through each line and ask the 5 Ws (+ 1 H). Who, what, where, when, why, and how. Why did Pinefeld Lasher go on the trip to discover Lashyr? Where did he come from? What was the original purpose of his trip? etc. All questions that pop up from the first sentence alone.

Moral Dilemmas
Will an average citizen kill one person to save five?:
Not an innocent person.
- If no, will they do it if they were making someone else kill them?:
No, they would view that as worse.

Will they sacrifice themselves to save 2 others?:
Yea.
If they had to kill one of two people, and one is begging to be killed to save the other, which will they kill?:
The one who is not begging to be killed because they had been ungrateful and cowardly.
If an endangered animal was about to kill a citizen, would they kill the animal?:
Yes.
- If no, what if a person of hgh authority was getting attacked?
- if yes, what if the animal was an endling?:
Yes.
If a person who saved 2 lives before was trying to kill someone, would they allow it?:
No.
- If yes, what if they only saved one persons?
- If no, how many people would they have to save beforehand to get allowance?:
regardless of how many, they wouldn’t let them.

An elderly person being unable to afford medication:
Berate their relatives for refusing to buy them it, probably.
The family is emphasised here.
A young teenager being unable to afford medication:
If an orphan; they’d probably buy them it.
A homeless (or poor) person abused by a rich person or several rich people:
Probably confront the rich people.
A rich person abused by a homeless person or several homeless people:
If the homeless people did it without provocation, they’d probably kill them.
A homosexual person abused by others because of their sexual preferences:
If it was a woman of any sexual orientation abused by a man or men they’d defend her (though probably also express disapproval).
If they had a male guest who was a homosexual they’d still defend him (unless he was also a rapist) whilst others they’d probably join in with the mob, to be honest.
A heterosexual person abused by others because of their sexual preferences:
If by gay men; they’d probably get lynched.
If by lesbians, a female police officer would probably smack them.
A child bullied by other children in school grounds for a particular reason (e.g. wearing pink):
Depends if they felt it was a good reason.
A child bullied by others for no particular reason, or because it seemed fun to pick on the child:
Intervene and confront the children.
An adult steals the wallet, smartphone, or any property of value (or contains something value) of another person:
If it’s a man (or if the victim is also a woman)
the victim would probably batter them and then give them to the law.
If a man who steals is unlucky, he might be killed.

An elderly steals the wallet, smartphone, or any property of value (or contains something value) of another person:
The victims grandfather or grandmother would beat him up.
A child steals the wallet, smartphone, or any property of value (or contains something value) of another person:
The child’s parents are told.
A pregnant woman denied abortion before the second trimester: they’d approve
unless it was to save her life or if she was proven to have been raped.

A pregnant woman denied abortion during or after the second trimester, or when the woman is very close to giving birth:
Approve and probably have the woman arrested.
A foreign tourist/couple visits your country and acts rudely or does something that is considered rude in your country's culture(s):
Give them one warning and if they do it again arrest them.
A tourist/couple from your country visits another country and acts rudely or does something that is considered rude in that country's culture(s):
They’d probably apologise and not do it again.

XVII. Questions of Death and Burial.

What is their understanding of death and dying? When someone is dead, they are dead
What does this society do with their corpses? Depends on what dead person requests
Do they cremate their dead? Or, how are dead bodies disposed of? Sometimes, sometimes by burial, occasionally by museum preservation.
Is the family responsible for the body? In cases where the dead's will doesn't say otherwise, yes
What part do the priests play? If the dead requests a religious ceremony or is part of a religion which calls for one, a religious ceremony is held. otherwise, a clergyman plays as much role as any other person
Are there cemeteries at all? Yes
Do people visit the dead? If so, how often and why? Some do, for a variety of reasons.

Suicide
What do people in this culture think about suicide? It'd be neat to prevent it, but individual freedom y'know?
Is it the greatest sin one can commit? Or is it a sin at all? Since the majority is atheist, the concept of "sin" is not common in itself.
Is it the great and last comfort of a tormented soul? Some hold this view.
Is it worse than murder? If suicide was worse than murder, then we wouldn't have condemned countries which ban suicide!

Another School Uniform survey
Country name: The Armed Republic of Juansonia
Do schools in this country mandate a uniform or dress code? Yes, a uniform is mandated
Similarly, do universities mandate a uniform or dress code? Universities are more independent, ranging from no dress code to strict uniforms
What kind of uniform or dress code is considered normal or standard at state schools?
  • regular uniform: dress shirt/blouse, formal trousers/shorts/skirt(leggings/tights optional), blazer/sweater/coat with school logo, formal shoes
  • Athletic uniform: T-Shirt or tank-top with school logo, athletic shorts
  • Combat uniform: Juansonia military uniform with school patches/markings.
  • team athletes must wear team uniform when competing, if one is issued
  • Schools maintain a dress code for when students are allowed out of uniform (student birthdays, etc.)
  • Science courses may require a student use protective gear (ranging from goggles and gloves to a hazmat suit)
All listed uniforms are provided by state, and secondary school students have control of more factors (adding pins and/or patches to blazer, custom skirt length, blazer/sweater/coat color, etc.)
Do girls and boys have different uniforms or dress codes in state schools? no
Are hats, bags and accessories a part of the uniform or dress code in state schools? Allowed in addition to compliant items
Are hair, facial hair, hair products, tattoos, makeup or jewelry controlled in state schools? Jewelry (exempt watches) prohibited while in combat uniform, facial hair must not interfere with gas mask if one is needed.
Is the standard different in private or independent schools, if they exist?Private schools, like universities, range from "anything goes" to far stricter standards.

Are there many people in your nation who follow a religion other than the Wajuti way, a condition also known by the great Wajuti people as being infidel scum worthy of enslavement (henceforth referred to as “infidel scum”)? 58% of population is atheist, Christianity is largest religion, Catholicism largest Christian Sect, our gov't never heard of Wajuti way.
How healthy are these infidel scum? Quite healthy
Are the women of these infidel scum famed for their beauty?
We're not talking supermodels here, but Juansonian women usually are beautiful around their prime
Are the men of these infidel scum strong or skilled at trades?
Many Juansonains, even the women, are both strong and trade-skilled (our military's conscription helps)
Hypothetically speaking, what kind of defenses do these infidel scum have against slaver raids or invasions?
Military backed by conscription, police forces, sanctions, privately-owned machine guns, border security, defensive RADAR
Hypothetically speaking, what is the best route for a raid or invasion against the infidel scum of your nation?
The best route is the one where the raiders or invaders commit suicide either before or shortly after entering Juansonian territory, honestly.

Digging through this forum, I saw this thread: "Is YN at risk of becoming a Dictatorship?" which I thought was quite funny in the context of Rhodevus.

Having started life as a young republic, the First Rhodeve Republic from 1701-1754, during which it fell victim to a lot of corruption. and I mean a LOT. This eventually lead to a political coup by President Emilia Hart, in 1758, after having been president for 4 years. She turned the republic (which had already grown into a colonial empire), into a true empire with her as its first empress. The fall to dictatorship was more beneficial to the country than not, as it lead to a restructuring of government and financial institutions, as well as a heavier focus on military matters, which would become crucial during the 2nd Rhodeve Republic. Emilia died in 1794, and passed the reigns to her son Montgomery Hart, who transferred the empire back to the hands of the people in 1808. The Empiredom was Rhodevus's first brush with dictatorship, which funnily enough, lead to a strengthening of the country overall.

The second Rhodeve Republic lasted from 1808 until the fall of Rhodevus's colonial and maritime empire in 1845. During which time, there was also plenty of corruption and underhanded political tactics, but much less than the first republic. Still, through a plethora of internal (spiel written below) and external factors (a series of wars known as the Rhodeve Collapse which lasted from 1840-1845), the colonial empire fell, and with it, the 2nd Republic. The last president of the republic, Rubin Machin, lead a coup, was crowned king, and spent his last 2 years of life (before dying of leukemia) to fixing, reorganizing and overall establishing a new government form with new systems to prevent the widespread corruption which lead to his rise.

Funnily enough, because he had no children, the system put in place was a non-hereditary one, which put plenty of power back to the people, even while there was a monarch in power. The system (now known as a Rubinian Monarchy) has been in place in Rhodevus since then.

So, in the end, with Rhodevus's 2 brushes with dictatorships, both ended up being a net positive for the country

There were multiple different facets which lead to its collapse both internally and externally. Externally, Rhodevus was engaged in multiple wars and especially near the end, was stretched thin, engaging in some 30 or so different fronts around the world, without its empire backing it (most of the empire was in open rebellion against the republic). So, externally, it was fairly easy to see why it collapsed.

Internally, things get a lot more complicated. Saying the Republic of Rhodevus was corrupt is under-selling it. It was littered with corruption, black-market deals and trade, assassination and espionage on nearly every level. This is mainly since the Second Republic (1808-1845), but corruption was prevalent since the start. The Rhodeve Empire was unraveling just through this aspect alone, and would have eventually collapsed in on itself even if other countries did not attack it externally.

There are a few very important people to the history of this collapse, one of them being the last president and first king of Rhodevus, Rubin Machin. Extremely ambitious man and even more corrupt. if any one person led to the collapse, it would have been him. He sold people out, planted false reports on people so they would be arrested, and then turned those he made plant those reports over to the police. He had a hand in as many pockets as he could get, especially the newspapers. He saw to it, that the military abroad received bad intel, or received it too late to be useful. He made deals with the Aznazians (our main rivals in the final months of the wars) to ensure Rhodevus fell into a sort of quasi-controlled status of their empire, instead of as a direct territory. But, as the saying about him goes: "Men are either good in life or great in history".

Another important person would be Senator Marcus Swan. AKA the Man Who Owned the Banks. Greedy, ambitious and just like Rubin, extremely corrupt. Using his position of power, he did a bunch of things to line his own pockets, especially at the expense of the colonies and territories. When the government needed money, he made sure that they requested 25% more than required, giving himself healthy bonuses. An avid liar, he cared more about potential foreign business offers than much else. It would be him, who turned foreign interests and aggression onto the empire so quickly.

There of course are the Marks brothers, who single-handedly (double-handedly?) lead to the collapse in Triumvirate Relations (the 3 peoples of Rhodevus: english, french and natives).
Supreme Judge Rubio Dingg, who revealed to the public all of the corruption which was taking place (after being caught and tortured for information by:)
Maggie Quinn, owner of a major newspaper company in Rhodevus and the territories, who hoped to become president one day, at the expense of literally everyone she came into contact with.
and the Golden Boy; Andrew Wyle. Street thug, mafia leader, soon-to-be mayor of Kingstown, and just like the rest, greedy, corrupt and controversial

All these people and more had a hand in shaping Rhodevus internally and externally during the final years of the country. But, while I only specified their faults, all were terrible people but great in some way. Andrew Wyle did indeed become mayor. For two months where he crippled the under-ground gangs in the country (before being killed off himself). Maggie Quinn hosted the only news company that spread factual news at the time and was not owned by the government; leading to the rise of the concept of open and free press in Rhodevus. She too, would eventually be sentenced to prison and then executed. Rubio Dingg passed through benchmark laws which would keep Rhodevus sustainable long into the future (dead in an accident, most believed that he was assassinated by Rubin Machin). The Mark Brothers were just sh*tty people. Both held life sentences upon their capture. Marcus Swan, who controlled vast monopolies lead to the separation of companies act, which ended Rhodeve monopolies (also sentenced to life in prison).

The only person not sentenced to prison or death was Rubin Machin, who became king, and restructured the entire political landscape in Rhodevus, nearly single-handedly ending corruption in the country, before dying 2 years later of leukemia.

Of course, not everyone was bad, Thomas Swayer, Betty Katth, Katherine Kates and many more. There were good people among the bad.

So, to answer your second question, no. Nobody was a revolutionary in the collapse. Most were the same type of people who would have run the country for the last century. It was a combination of all these people coming about at once which lead to its internal downfall.

The republic of Rhodevus was horrible. It profoundly changed the international landscape, and kept republicanism and democracy from being the massively dominant political system like it is IRL. The Republic is not seen as a good empire or even an average country anymore. It is known as a terrible country which engaged in horrible actions.
