I don't want to derail this thread, but I just have a quick question. Is there a particular format to what questions are being answered, or can I just pick and choose whenever?

Are the judiciary appointed or elected?
Judges are elected by adult, sane members of the tribes they have jurisdiction over.
Or elected by representatives of each tribe for the Supreme Court.
Magistrates are elected by adult, sane members of the tribes they have jurisdiction over.
What determines appointment of the the judiciary/ what do the electorate base their decision on?
Judges as opposed to magistrates (who have less sentencing power) are required to be scholars of Islam unless they deal solely with members of another religion, in which case they must be scholars of that religion.
The electorate also consider their track record in the tribe, their ancestry, their sense of honour and legal skills.
What powers do the judiciary have?

A magistrate can order the payment of compensation of up to the value of 39 dinars/one cow. , restore non-residential land usurped, order up to 10 lashes and send someone to the judges or judges for sentence.
A judge has the powers of a magistrate and is in addition allowed to grant a divorce, sentence someone to up to 100 lashes, order unlimited compensation, restore residential land to it’s rightful owner and give out prison sentences.
Is their religious influence on the judicial system?
Yes see below
What legal system do you have?
Most tribes use Shariah law, one uses elements of socialist law, most use elements of what could be called common law(Urf in Arabic) and the royal tribal also has a legal code.
How are judges viewed? As wise, just and honourable

The Free Islands of Independence wrote:Usage of Penal Battalions has for the most part been all but history for many. However some nations may still use them.

Does your nation use Penal Battalions for military service?yes

If your nation does not use penal battalions, ignore the rest of this survey.

What crimes can make you eligible for penal service? Depends on local custom, normally: repeated/severe public order offences, young offenders committing theft, gambling, property damage, breaking environmental law, use an excess amount of tribal land habitually.

How many men in your military currently serve as penal troops? 90 Household guards. All men from noble families who broke property in arguments over gambling debts.

Describe the roles penal troops play in your military:
Mostly labour and line infantry, though there are sometimes Ghazis, other Mubarizun or officers.

Are penal troops given any training? If so, describe briefly how:
Same as other soldiers.

Describe the relationship between Penal Troops and Normal Soldiers. How would they cooperate on the field? There are some specific penal battalions but sometimes they are in normal battalions. They tend to cooperate well.

How well are Penal troops equipped compared to Normal Soldiers? The same.

How do conditions of Penal Troops compare to those of Normal Soldiers?: more supervised.

Does your nation use Penal Battalions for military service? Yes.

If your nation does not use penal battalions, ignore the rest of this survey.

What crimes can make you eligible for penal service? Murder (In rare cases), Robbery, Major disciplinary violations as a soldier, among others.

How many men in your military currently serve as penal troops? 7,341 soldiers currently serve in Penal Battalions. The number is low because the nation is currently not at war.

Describe the roles penal troops play in your military. The most common role for Penal Troops consist of deminers and support troops. Penal Troops often have little choice in specialty.

Are penal troops given any training? If so, describe briefly how. If the situation allows it, Penal Troops are given special Basic Training. It is more shorter, however more harsher. Non-Infantry roles such as artillery and deminers are most times given some degree of training on their work, with or without Basic Training.

Describe the relationship between Penal Troops and Normal Soldiers. How would they cooperate on the field? When in non-combat situations, Penal Troops are typically separated from normal troops. Penal Troops with a good service record so far may receive less strict regulations.

How well are Penal troops equipped compared to Normal Soldiers? Normal Soldiers are prioritized when distributing most supplies. In a peacetime like the FII is in, their equipment is fairly similar.

How do conditions of Penal Troops compare to those of Normal Soldiers? Again, Normal Soldiers are prioritized in shelter and needs, among other things. Penal Troops are given conditions slightly lower than if not equal to Normal Soldiers along with heavier watch to prevent/discourage mutinies.[/spoiler]

If not, is there a site that's similar to NationStates? If so, how is it different from NationStates? There is a site that’s much more popular called WorldBuilder, where you can create either your own city-state, country, or world. You can then design the society of your dreams.
