Yh'Ri'I (Oborik) Mythological Monsters:

Necre Escote
Name: Necre Escote (NAY-cray ess-COE-tay, or Escort of the Dead)

Type: Reaper

Power (on a scale from 0a to 10a, see this for more info): 2a

Size: Depends

Is it real? Yes, according to the Yh'Ri'I culture. But there is no definite answer for everyone. It's like asking everybody if there's a god; you'll get a mix of yes and no.

Description: Necre Escote is a being that delivers the souls of the dead to Necre Botani (Garden of the Dead, the afterlife.) She can only be seen by the person she is delivering, and she appears as a pale woman with a cloak. Her voice is identical to that of the dead one's mother at the time of their birth.

What cultures is it often mentioned? She plays a very important part in Yh'Ri'I religion and culture.

If it is real, is it passive or aggressive? Passive.

Where does it live? Anywhere on Earth, wherever someone dies.

When does it become active (if it is dormant)? When someone dies.

Other Notes: Time works differently in Necre Escote's dimension, so she delivers someone just in time for another person to die.

Grk'Shmrg
Name: Grk'Imagemrg (Pronounced GERK-ə-shmerg; also known as Enfente Voria, meaning "Child Eater")

Type: Demon (It's sort of its own type.)

Power (on a scale from 0a to 10a, see this for more info): 2b

Size: Ten times as large as the child it's hunting.

Is it real? No, but don't tell the kids!

Description:
Grk'Imagemrg is a monster that only eats prepubescent children, but it is downright horrified of the child's parents, grandparents, or any pubescent/post-pubescent person related to the child (The start of puberty is seen as adulthood in Yh'Ri'I culture).
It is said to have two legs, a tail, and three eyes. Beneath it's flesh is nothing, just an endless void; that's where the children go when they are eaten.
People are told the truth, that it is not real, when they reach puberty. They are also told if they are sent to an orphanage, so they don't live in complete fear of this creature. Also, if a child risks it and runs away from home, they're bound to find out sooner or later.
Basically, Grk'Imagemrg is a myth created to keep children from running away.

What cultures is it often mentioned? Almost all Yh'Ri'I parents tell the myth of Grk'Imagemrg to their children.

If it is real, is it passive or aggressive? Well it seeks out stray kids and eats them alive, so you tell me.

Where does it live? Wherever there is a stray child.

When does it become active (if it is dormant)? Whenever there is a stray child.

Other Notes: (Kinda OOC:) I wrote a poem called "Fraite " or "Fear Grk'Shmrg", and you can read it here. (No, my real name isn't Zever Krakowski, that's a name I created solely for the purpose of this poem.)

How many spouses may a man or woman have? Men are not allowed in our nation. Women may have as many spouses as they desire.
Who decides on a marriage? The women involved
Can a marriage end in divorce? How? No. We have not set up any such standards because all of our citizens have yet to have any problems.
Who usually takes custody of children if a marriage ends for some reason? We have not perfected lesbian procreation yet so no children to be taken custody of.
How are families named? The women decide together
What happens to orphans? There are none because of the reason 2 questions above
How are boy and girl children treated differently? Boys don't exist in our nation so it's impossible to treat them differently
What, if anything, is considered a good marriage gift? Going to Michelle World or reserving a room in the 'prison'
How big are families, typically? See first question's answer
How common is domestic violence? Is it understood to be a problem, or a normal aspect of family life? We have never had any cases of domestic violence.

wow! Looks really good!

Just one small critique: Wingspan refers to length from wingtip to wingtip. This includes the body length as well. so if the body is 5 feet across before reaching a week, and each wing is 30 ft, then the wingspan wiuld actually be 65 feet rather than 60.
But it's very informative and I love all the different dragon types!

Worldbuilding survey (Finale): The Miscalculation

Postby Silver Commonwealth » Sun May 26, 2019 3:05 am

(As I said previously, it turned out, that I hadn't got enough space for all questions. Anyways, what's done, that's done. The long road's finally over. Previous post.)

[''Government has decided to leave XII section out from the survey, as it considers it a ''too delicate'' matter to be discussed.'']

V. Questions of Customs and Social Life.

What colors are associated with power? With virtue? With death? ''Dark red usually symbolizes leadership along with dark blue, gold - with prestige, but purple - with luxury. Black color is associated with power as well, but it is also associated with death at the same time. In some lands, white is also a sorrow color. Orange is usually associated with sunshine, and tropics, while green - with fertility, growth, and harmony. Yellow is associated with intellect, and energy, but white - with purity, goodness, and innocence. It should be kept in mind, however, that in various lands, color meanings might significantly differ, depending on cultural traditions.''
If two men get into a fight, how is this supposed to be resolved? ''Usually broken up by mutual friends, or by police officers (Or soldiers, if brawl happens in army base). Fighting while drunk is especially looked down to, as it is considered as ''the lowest in terms of morals'' and those, who have been drunk during a brawl, usually are publicly shamed later on, and forced to ''sleep out'' their intoxication levels. In general, unless fight is in self-defense, or a matter of life or death, fights aren't tolerated. That said, some SC's regions have different laws, and exceptions to this - for example, in some of them it is legal to brawl out, if the ''honor'' of the person has been offended.''
If two women get into a fight, how should that be resolved? ''Is that one even a question? It is supposed to get resolved similarly as if two men got into a fight. In fact, no matter, who participates in fight, we usually try to resolve the issue in similar ways.''
How do people demonstrate grief? ''Well, crying, or whining is one of the most popular ways of demonstrating grief, as it can get the point across easily. Another way might be refusing most, or all contact with others, and wanting to be alone. In some cultures, people are expected to mourn their loved ones after funeral for about 40 days, or longer. Some people are more stoic while grieving, and are expecting to not break down, but some are more emotional, and can even tear their hair. Sometimes anger can also be used to demonstrate grief, usually in combination with tears of anger. In short, there are many ways for expressing grief, and some of them are tied to the culture, of which a person is a part of.''
Who inherits property? Titles? Position? ''Usually a successor appointed in a testament before death. If no family member seems to be appropriate enough to inherit property, title, or position, it can be given to a friend, close ally, or a work partner. However, inheritance to family's members is usually getting viewed more and more negative, as not always the members of family can spend that money or influence well - in fact, in more and more cases, state officially seizes the inheritance money and property for itself, leaving only a bit for the family itself. Some SC's regions have already considered banning inheritance of titles and positions purely on bloodline, if the person, who receives title in inheritance is not actually skilled, and fit for the work. While it is still far from meritocracy, and corruption still runs rampant, it means, that nepotism is not as accepted as it used to be. However, in some regions like Afghanistan, that is still a big problem.''
What are the most popular games? How important are they? ''From board games, chess, and checkers are usually the most popular, as they ''stimulate strategical thinking'', according to the words of one of SC's army's generals. However, East Asian ''Go'' board game, and Norse hnefatafl are also popular in the Commonwealth. From sports, usually the most popular ones are football, baseball, and cricket. Various gym exercises are also recommended for keeping a healthy body. From video games, perhaps the most popular is a shooter game, named Basilisk - it takes place in far future, where SC has started to colonize space, and it has to fend off aliens on a hostile planet, and push them out of it for good. Fallout franchise is popular there as well, but story is way more different, as it takes place after nuclear war devastated most of the Commonwealth, and games are scattered across the entire world, with DLCs explaining other administrative regions (Like Fallout being located in Eastern Columbia, but DLC ''Hogan Divided'' taking place in Rockies). In short, SC has a big variety of all three of those kinds.''
When and how does someone go from child to adult? ''Legally, usually when person reaches 18 years, they officially become an adult. While usual magic age is 18 in most of SC's states, the number can vary from 15, to even 21, depending on the local governor laws. Physically, however, person goes from a child to a young adult, when they undergo puberty. The age, when it happens, can vary, and females usually undergo puberty faster than males, so person is considered underage even after that, until they reach the legal age, as it is a more stable standard, and brains of the person are still developing after puberty.''
How much free time do people usually get? ''Depends on the region, honestly. In SC's more developed regions, and cities, usually only Sundays are holidays, which means, that Saturdays are full work days. However, due of work shifts, and increasing demand, there are a lot of those, who work in Sundays as well. In countryside, Sunday is not a holiday either - instead, a holiday is every tenth day, due of countryside requiring more work. Also, depending on what job you work in, 12 hour workday,or night shifts might not be nothing unusual, so the amount of free time can be highly reduced. However, overall, the more developed SC's regions also have more free time as well, which is usually used to read books, recite religious texts, cook dinner, or play some card games. In some of the state's official holidays, workday is slightly reduced as well, and there are breaks during a few periods in day. However, in the ruined former disputed zone, and former two superstate territories, there is even less free time, as most, if not all effort goes to rebuilding region, and things like infrastructure.''
What do they spend this time doing? "As mentioned before, one of the most popular activities is playing board games, particularly cards, as those are very universal - they have many shapes, and sizes, you can play both for just fun, and money, there are a lot of unique card games in SC's world, or even show tricks with them, etc. Most of modern ones are made out of plastic, or paper. Some people spend their free time by playing video games - those are mostly teens, and kids, as they have more time to spend, but some SC's adults play them too, despite games being in earlier stage than OTL. Outdoor activities like hiking, or just walking are a popular way to spend time as well, while shopping - not so much, as consumerist culture hasn't been quite formed yet. Reading books, playing ball, and hanging out with friends are also ways, of how to spend time there."
Is society segregated in any way? ''Well, yes. In many ways, actually, as SC has a long, and ugly history with segregation - from first Bantustans in SC's South Africa, and indigenous people ''reservations'' in Americas, and Australia, to the structure of SC's new government of the world - keeping common citizenry of the ethnic groups separated from each other with borders, while having guards on all sides of the border, and mostly allowing face to face interaction only for the higher-ups, soldiers, and tourists from other regions. Even before SC's leadership rose to power, and radically reshaped the country, there were still problems with segregation in its heartlands, but they only accelerated at an insane speed afterwards. It is no doubt, that SC's society is unequal. Various policies of segregation, and variations have been implemented by most, if not all SC's governments.''
What social classes or divisions exist in this society? ''In general, society is split into three classes - the lower class, which usually are most of the workers, which generally are at the bottom of the hierarchy, and are monitored by the upper classes, the middle class, which is usually some of the members of administration, few well-off workers, and particularly talented people, and the Elite class - scientists, politicians, clergy, leaders, etc. Social divisions might differ a bit over the regions, but overall they are similar. There are a few people, which are considered as ''so low'', that they don't even belong in the lower class, and are overall the outcasts of class system. Those are usually homeless people, drug users, serial criminals, mentally ill people, etc. Their life is pretty terrible, as Elite class can usually persecute them with little, or any objections - if oppressing the lower worker classes could still be resisted by state managed labor unions, and those politicians, who have workers and peasants important in heart, few people would want to stand up for the outcasts.''
If so, can people move from one class to another? Are there any benefits to being of one class over another? ''If a person is particularly skilled, or intelligent enough, they can move from prole class to middle class, or even elite class, as usually the most brightest, and powerful minds are there, but it requires testing of skills in a special exam by party's members, when students finish the college. Elite class has a lot of benefits, like larger access to food, better clothing, better internet connection, some discounts for products, etc. While it is pretty hard to move up in social hierarchy, it is very easy to fall down, even for elites - for example, if someone is caught in a crime like corruption, murder, vote fraud in party's elections, etc, they can get expelled from the Party, which effectively means falling back to the middle class. (Middle class also consists from more talented workers, which at the same time aren't influential enough to be in the Elites) It is also very easy to fall in the Outcast category, if a serious crime like betrayal of the state is committed.''
Is there any discrimination against minority groups (racial, ethnic, religious) in this society? ''Yes, as due of us being a world government, some form of discrimination is practically inevitable. In fact, SC has actually done little to nothing, when it comes to deal with racism issue - in fact, they do quite the opposite, by creating various separated regions for ethnic, and racial groups, in order to separate the people living there, so average citizen, and lower classes could have little to not interaction with foreigners, and the only ones with such a privilege would be the upper classes, soldiers, and leaders of SC's world. While SC officially has declared itself a ''pan-human'' nationalist Commonwealth, in reality, it has many internal problems, which are usually ''swept under the carpet'' - for example, there is a strong anti-German sentiment in a few SC's regions, and South Africa's apartheid system still is place in SC's South Africa - in fact, situation has only gotten worse, as SC's South Africa is backed by Tom's central government, which means, that unless support stops flowing, it will be able to last for quite a long time.''
How independent or codependent are individuals? ''Collectivism is basically the cornerstone of the SC, and is enshrined in its ''constitution'', so individualism is usually suppressed., and heavily discouraged, and ideologies like libertarianism, and anarchism are banned there. Central government, and the regional governors have an totalitarian amount of control over the lifes of citizens, and it is propagated, that ''masses are stronger than the individual'', with citing works of both collectivist left, and collectivist right. However, as always, some regions are more lax on those matters, and allow some signs of individualism. Still, in the end, SC overall remains highly collectivist on the collectivist/individualist scoreboard.''
What are the typical roles of women and men? What are the expectations of children? ''Children are usually expected to get good grades, and a well-paid job afterwards, and also be good soldiers of the Fatherland (Or Motherland, depending on the region), if there would be a necessity, and they are also expected to aid the elderly of the family, which can't work full time jobs on their own, but usually have lots of experience to share with. Most of SC's leadership has pretty traditionalist mindset on gender roles - women are expected to ''take care of the home, kids, and work behind the front lines'', while men are expected to ''fight in the front, do the hard work, and be the head of the family''. However, in late years, Tom has somewhat softened his policy, and now at least army is a bit more equal, as highly skilled female soldiers can have pretty good career. Still, gender equality is a pretty far dream in SC.''
Does the government play a large part in people’s lives? "Of course. It is a prime example of totalitarianism in extremes, as it controls every aspect of its citizen lifes - either obviously oppressive, or more subtle instead. Due of its decentralized model, it usually enforces totalitarianism through other rulers - this system is called as "Integral Totalitarianism". It is basically 1984-esque in a way, and libertarians, along with anarchists, or simply those, who don't support government's enormous power, are persecuted. At the same time, decentralization makes it very fragile, as governors tend to feud with each other."
Does religion play a large part in people’s lives? ''Yes, just like the government. Many of SC's regions are either theocracies, or heavily influenced by religious groups. Religion is one of the cornerstones of SC's ideology, and it is actively enforced. A lot of people in Megastates have been reported to regularly attend churches, and abstain from alcohol, and it could be said, that Bible belt has pretty much extended to all of the mainland US. Although most forms of atheism are suppressed, there are members of Party, which propose a version of state atheism, as they view religious organizations as ''another threat to state's power''. However, so far, most of SC's governments have well managed to co-opt those organizations, so such drastic change is not very plausible for now. Regions are usually ran by zealots from various religions, which have few common points, on which the whole alliance bases.''

Food
Describe how daily food is obtained. ''Depends, on what region are we talking about. If we are talking about more developed, and wealthy regions (SC's Canada, America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, British Isles, Central America, etc.), then food is usually bought from large shops, or vending machines, and is somewhat easy to obtain, despite the usages of food ration cards in more dire times, and ''years of poverty'' in the past are still in a fresh memory, so people will often ask - ''have you eaten something today?''. In developing, or lesser developed regions (Rest of the European Federation, India, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Siberia, etc.), food supplies are usually more scarce, so people need to stock up the food. In some regions, there is already some form of food service going on, but in others, people still need to get their food by hunting it on their own, or growing it in the farms.''
What type of foods are most popular? ''There are many popular regional foods, and some of them might be popular outside of their regions, but some are pinned down to one specific region/group of regions. However, there are few foods, which have been popular not only on a regional, or even continental scale, but across the globe as well - after all, SC's soda experienced a global triumph. One of those foods is pasta, because of its variety - it has various forms, and is consumed by millions, or even billions of citizens daily. It also is quite tasty. Second popular is the burger, along with nuka-cola, and other fast foods - thanks to SC's state's industry, those turned from local chain businesses to symbols of the world, and new restaurants are being built even in the disputed zone. Pizza is also pretty popular, along with the rest of Italian cuisine.''
What are typical dishes and specialties of the region? ''As SC encompasses many regions, there are many regional specialties as well. For example, sugar pie is a typical dessert in Western Europe, The East (Quebec), and Midwest Megastate. In Iceland, Hákarl is a traditional dish - it is basically a fermented Greenland shark, with a strong taste and smell. Sunday roast is a traditional British meal, which is mostly served in Sunday, and consists from roast beef, roast potatoes, and other vegetables. Mochi is a small rice cake, mostly made in Japan, and is a traditional food during Japanese New Year. Spring pancake type of pancake, which is eaten in Northern China, in order to celebrate the beginning of spring in a day, called lichun. Haggis is a typical Scottish pudding, which consists from parts of sheep, onion, oatmeal, and other spices. List goes on.''
What type of food is the locality or region famous for? ''There are many regions, which have foods, which are like postcard of the region, but we are going to count only a few of them. Buttered popcorn is popular in all American megastates, no matter the local culture, and it is very popular in other industrial SC's regions as well. Potato chips are very popular as well, with one brand having most of the monopoly on chip production - Farmer Joe's Chips. Development team constantly seeks to develop new flavors - most recent one is ''chips with salmon flavor''. Poutine - a mix of fried potatoes with cheese, is particularly popular in The East (Quebec), and other Canadian regions. Mexican tacos, and German marzipan are pretty popular as well, while ketchup is the most popular sauce. Hummus is popular in Middle East, but Chicken parm - in Australia. List goes on with foods like lasagna, croissants, goi cuon, mapple syrup, etc.''
What cutlery, if any, do people use for cooking and eating? ''For soups, a spoon is typically used, although some people drink from the bowl as well, if it is small. Knife is used to both cut the ingredients while preparing food, but it is used to split meat in smaller parts while eating as well, or any other food, which is too large, to be consumed in one piece, and has not been cut before. Knives with round end are usually considered as more ''finely'', but forks are used for eating. However, this is not the case in all regions - some use chopsticks, while some eat with hands, depending on what regional tradition we are talking about. For some, cutlery is also a way, of how to show their wealth, and status.''
How is the table arranged? ''Usually, cutlery is brought, along with either a bowl, or a dish, and various spices, and sauces on the table, along with napkin, and tablecloth. In some regions, it is usually considered okay to add extra spices, or sauces to the food, if eater feels like food isn't ''spicy enough'', but in some regions, it is seen as an implication, that ''the cook hasn't made food good enough'', and could possibly be taken as insulting. Chairs are arranged, depending on the size, and shape of table. Table can be either in center of the kitchen, or in the corner, but second variant means, that only a few sides will be available. Also, there has been a rising trend of dinning outside the house, where table often is not required, as you can just take the food and drinks in your hands, with bench as a place to put them, and trash can usually is very close. However, littering rates have also increased as well.''
How do people sit when eating? Is there any arrangement by age or dignity of diners? ''Again, this depends on culture, and family traditions - in some households and regions, arrangement is not that important, and people sit where they want. However, in some regions, the head of the household usually sits at the end of the table, and at front of them sits either their spouse, or the highest-ranked person in the room. Other family members, and elites usually sit near the left side of the table, while proles, and other lower ranks - on right side. Some people also eat separately, if there is not enough space near the table. Of course, etiquette differs around the regions once again.''
How many and when are the main mealtimes? ''Traditionally, there were three meal times in the west - breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, in the 60s, and 70s, when hunger was especially widespread, there was often very little to put on the table even in the wealthiest regions, not even talking about places like Oceania, where food shortages could last for months. So, the amount of mealtimes was reduced to only two per day, sometimes - even only once per day. Also, there are different mealtime traditions in other cultural regions, so it has to be taken in account. However, in the late years, situation has improved a bit in terms of food - mealtimes have become more nourishing. With the rising popularity of fast food, and snacking on streets, people also replenish themselves, by snacking little, but often. However, in some regions, where food still has to be gathered from wilderness, and in poorer regions, mealtimes aren't as frequent.''
Are there restaurants, popinas, street vendors or other places where food may be bought in public? "Yes, the amount of them has increased a lot only in the late years, though - about 20-15 years ago, there weren't that many of them. Some of them can pass as "small family businesses", so private sector is a bit higher there. However, competition with state owned restaurants, and fast food restaurants is still harsh, and small, provate businesses aren't allowed to grow "too big" - otherwise, state might shut them down any day. Still, those places, where food can be bought in public, are slowly becoming popular everywhere - even in former disputed zone, and Antarctica."
Is there a significant risk of food poisoning? How many cases lead to death? Is there understood to be a link between food and poisoning or illness? ''Food poisoning is a serious issue in SC, and not only in the newer achieved territories of former disputed zone - there have even been reported quite a few cases of food poisoning from more wealthy regions like British Isles, Canada, USA, New Zealand, Mexico, etc. Although, in terms of that, wealthy states have greatly improved the quality of their food, and healthcare - amount of fatalities from food poisoning has been decreased significantly since last 20 years in more developed regions. However, in poorer regions, with problems of hygiene, sanitation, and availability of clear water, food poisoning cases are more lethal, and usually more numerous as well. In some of those regions, hunger is also a big problem, as food supplies are scarce, and those themselves are often bad quality. Link between those things is well documented, but in most of cases, SC's doctors can just hand out antibiotics.''
How much does a typical meal cost, if bought and not grown at home? ''This question can be quite hard to answer, as there are many different ''typical meals'' in the regions, and so there are different prices. So, for sake of simplicity, let's focus on Megastates - breakfast, which usually is a cup of coffee, a bunch of bread loafs, and sausages, costs about 5 Commonwealth Dollars, Lunch (Corn, or some other kind of soup, potato mash, light salads, etc.) costs 15 Commonwealth Dollars, but Dinner - 25 Commonwealth Dollars (Big chicken, Caesar salads, fries burgers, etc.). However, as said before, prices are different in other regions - where there is less purchase power, prices are usually ''lower'', if compared to Megastates. If a region has a closed economy of some kind, SC's food deliveries, and companies adjust to the regional price, which sometimes can reach quite big sums.''

Clothing and Fashion
What kind of clothes do people wear? How does this vary by season, ethnicity, age, profession, etc? ''Huh, that's kind of a hard question, as fashion, and cultural styles vary a lot across the regions. However, usually modesty is highly valued in clothing, and clothes are usually supposed to cover most of the body, due of SC's conservative guidelines (With an exception of the hot climate regions). More colorful clothing is usually used only in holiday events, or national celebration. As for uniforms, there are usually two type of them now - ceremonial uniforms, with which regional armies march in parades, and practical uniforms, which are used in battlefield/at home. On higher ranks of the society, clothing is usually more ''internationalist'', as it typically is a businessman's suit. In far north, people often wear thick fur clothing, to protect themselves from cold, although gore-tex, and kevlar materials are also becoming popular lately as well. Typical motto of the producers is ''practicality over beauty'', so most of SC's clothing might look bland, and prude, and fashion changes slowly.''
How do the genders dress: what differences are there between mens and womens clothing and accessories? ''Well, as SC's society is way much more conservative than OTL societies, men and women dress way more differently - for example, dresses are seen a lot more often for women. In some way, it's 50s mixed with PMT clothing, a.k.a retrofuturism. However, at the same time, a new, unisex style of clothing has become popular - military uniforms, and worker clothing, for an example, can't be either too stiff, as it could clog the movements of a person, or too loose, as it could snag on one of the mechanisms in factory, for an example, with terrible consequences. Militarist styled clothing has become more popular between citizenry as well, and according to SCPS data, the amount of military, and business-styled clothing has increased a lot in the last years, due of the impracticality of more extravagant clothing. There are also some taboos in clothing.''
How is clothing made, in small shops or larger factories? "Depends on many factors - the industry of the region, purchase power, demand for a product, local traditions, etc. In more wealthy, and urban regions, clothing is made in larger factories, for mass demand, due of rising population issues. In places like former disputed zone, where most of industry was decimated by constant warfare, and in Greenland, where there wasn't a large industrial clothing basis anyways, it is made in small shops, mostly in low numbers, but supposed to be durable. However, as of lately, model of production in larger factories seems to be in winning positions."
How much does typical clothing cost? ''On average, a t-shirt, along with pants, and boots, usually costs about 30-40 Commonwealth Dollars in more developed, and wealthier regions (The total price of them all, not how much they cost each). However, average prices are highly dependent on region's economical, and social situation - in places, where purchasing power is lower, clothing might seem ''cheaper'' for people in richer regions, but only because their incomes are higher. If compared to incomes in poorer regions, prices are usually even higher. ''typical clothing'' can also vary from region's climate - in Arctic, more pieces of clothing are needed to don't freeze to death. In fact, people often make their clothing on their own - it takes more time, but is a good alternative, if someone can't afford clothing from shop.''
How important is fashion to people? How does this vary by individual? "People have always wanted, that their national costumes look fashionable, because they are an important symbol as well. However, overall importance of fashion has been decreased significantly during the countless wars in SC's world, and more people rather prefer practical, than fashionable clothing. Still, upper classes can afford more, so they can also afford more fashionable clothing, as some designers want to turn it more fancier, even if it is supposed to be practical. Some individuals also want to stick out on overall grey mass."
What kinds of jewelry do people wear? And when? ''There are tons of jewelry in SC's world, in various shapes, sizes, and colors, and each region has its own unique set of it. However, basic pieces of jewelry are things like a small golden chain - it is usually meant to show off, or to show, that you are a part of rap culture, as this is pretty popular between SC's hip-hop artists, despite style being relatively new. Rings are also pretty universal - they can be both small wedding rings, and big rings around arms. Crowns were alao pretty popularconce, but sadly most of them have been melted by SC's government orders as "counter-revolutionary", and in order to gain access to the precious metals there. Also, dress codes have shunned usage of "too extensive jewelery" lately, as it is partly a corruption symbol as well.''

Entertainments
Does the culture have outlets for dramatic arts (theater, puppetry, cinematography)? ''Of course it does. From all dramatic arts, cinematography is perhaps the most popular as of now, but theater, and puppetry traditions are still alive and well in SC, and regularly appear in TV. In fact, we have a wide offer - tragedy, comedy, drama, puppetry, musical performance, as all SC's regions have centuries, and even millenias of such traditional dramatic arts. Still, it should be noted, that due of increasing digitalization tendencies in SC, theater, and puppetry get affected as well - more and more interaction happens between humans, and computers, or robots. Also, overall income from those shows has dramatically increased only for cinematography, despite the overall increase of SC's citizen purchase power.''
What other major forms of entertainment are there? ''Well, sports have always been popular in SC's world, both in past, and present, no matter, if there was disputed zone, or two other superstates, SC's national sport is baseball, but it is not nearly the most popular sport - in fact, the most popular sport in SC is football - sometimes it is called as the ''actual SC's national sport''. Video game industry, albeit still at early stages, has been growing at accelerating speeds for the last years, and currently has even its first multiplayer CS:GO games. Music is also very popular - from Alaska's frozen plains, to Japan's sakura forests, from Norwegian Fjords, to South African deserts, sounds of music, and instruments are everywhere. Music can be both happy, sad, inspiring, deep - variations are many. Martial arts are not only a form of entertainment, but a necessary skill, which can be used in order to protect yourself in case of invasion, as due of SC's strong gun laws, most civilians can only carry pistol at most. We have tons of other entertainment forms there too.''
Is the populace literate and numerate? ''On average, world is estimated to have about 80% literacy rate, at least according to Party's data. However, Party isn't the most trustworthy source, so the real number might be even significantly lower. One thing is for certain, however - there are big problems with literacy, especially in newer Commonwealth States, which are still developing industrially, and recovering from the scars of chaos, and disputed zone's war. As expected, highest literacy rates are in the more developed western hemisphere, along with parts of South Africa, British Isles, and Australia, along with a few neighboring territories. However, even there, illiteracy was once a great issue, which stagnated SC's advance in general. As for numeracy, people typically are very well versed in base equations, but there is a staggering lack of math specialists, and understanding of advanced math, which is the reason, why excellent mathematicians, along with scientists, are part of the elites of SC's society. Also, similarly to literacy, there are less mathematicians from the newer Commonwealth States, because school system was basically destroyed during the chaos in disputed zone, and other superstate territory, and in some places, indigenous cultures even took teaching in their own. However, in future, many new powerhouses are estimated to emerge from newer states.''
Do people read for pleasure? If so, what do they read? ''Depends on the material, which they are reading, Things like science fiction, westerns, thrillers, and romance stories are usually read for pleasure, but things like power station instruction manuals, political works, and memoirs are usually read for getting more information. Magazines can be used for both simply relaxing, and getting new information. In general, science fiction is one of the most liked SC's genres, but even it has its own unofficial sets - for example, publishers are less likely to approve books, in which space empires span over multiple galaxies, because nothing (so far) moves faster than light, and even for light it takes a very long time to move from one side of galaxy to another, not even talking about moving between galaxies. Political pamphlets, and manifestos are widely popular as well, along with religious literature. Books about history are popular as well. People do indeed read for pleasure - it is sometimes one of the few ways, how you can keep depression at bay in SC, by falling in fiction, and forgetting about the bleak world around for a while.''
How much do books, magazines, broadsheets and the like cost? ''Usually scientific, and historical magazines cost no less than 4.50 Commonwealth Dollars (In poorer regions often adjusted for purchasing power), while things like tabloids, and fashion magazines - usually 2 Commonwealth Dollars, or even less. An average newspaper costs about 5 Commonwealth Dollars. As for fiction, a good book of science fiction can cost about 30-40 Commonwealth Dollars, while a romance story - usually less, as those aren't well liked in the Commonwealth. A simple manifesto, or pamphlet can cost about 15 SC's dollars, but a well written political book - even as much as 50 Commonwealth dollars. Overall, cost depends on how qualitative the book, or magazine is, and how it is perceived by the Party's censor. Some books like ABC books, and dictionaries are given for free for public institutions like schools, or instruction manual books for organizations like electric companies, navy, IT conglomerate, builders, etc.''
Is there a public library system? Who uses it? "Yes, there is - some of it was inherited from the countries before the Third World War, but some of it had to be built from scratch, as war had despoiled, and ruined it in disputed zones. Library system can be used by any citizen, who is interested enough about magazines, books, pamphlets, and other literature, and visitors are a lot - from elementary school students, to old, elderly veterans. Only thing needed for that is a registration card (Separate for kid, and adult section), in order to be able to use library's services. However, some people visit libraries to have internet access, because not all households can afford it. Still, public library programs differ across the world, and so do the building designs - in some regions, they are bamboo buildings, or even large tent camps. In the end, however, almost all governors have implemented some kind of public library program."
Who are popular authors and poets? ''Yukio Mishima is a fairly popular author in SC's East Asia, who worked for RNGOC's government in this timeline, and who's ideas and phrases were often used for propaganda. Walter Whitman is one of the most popular poets in SC's Megastates as well, due of him being one of the most influential poets in American canon, yet some of his works were censored by SC's authorities later on for being too ''overtly sexual''. Mussolini, and his manifesto was later on used by Tom to construct his ideology, and, similarly to works of Hegel, is obligatory literature in SC's schools. For more ancient authors, Sun Tzu, and his book ''Art of War'' is an obligatory literature for SC's army commanders, because its strategies are still relevant even after more than 2000 years. While Aristotle is better known for his works in philosophy, he was also a poet, and a writer, and still is the most important poet in the world, and his works often prove to be more liked than SC's poet works. Laozi was the founder of Taoism, philosopher, and a poet as well - RNGOC later used some ideas from Taoism in its own ideology, which was later utilized by SC's Chinese regions after SC's arrival. Of course, these are just a few from all popular poets and writers in SC.''
Who are some of the more famous characters from literature? ''Well, Darth Vader from Star Wars is perhaps one of the most famous SC's characters, actually, and in SC's timeline, story is pretty similar, but instead of Siths being an empire, and Palpatine - an emperor, Siths are instead under an autocratic, extremely militaristic republic, and story is about clash of two republics - good republic vs evil republic. The Artful Dodger from Oliver Twist is also pretty famous in SC's literature. Romeo and Juliet are also pretty famous characters, and in SC's current climate, some lovers might find them relatable in a way, when obstacles in way of love are put by both hatred between families, and ethnic groups. Willy Wonka from the ''Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'' is also a popular character, and story premise is similar, but with characteristics unique to SC. as it takes place in a totalitarian dictatorship - a lot of the works made after 1950s have way different settings and character personality traits from OTL, and even works made before that are often censored.''
How has this changed over time? ''For a long period of time, SC had a pretty rigid view on literature, as it split it mostly in two ways - works, which support the State, and works, which don't. In the middle, there were sub-categories like sci-fi, drama, thrillers, etc, but those weren't that important for bureaucrats. For a while, political literature was more overwhelming than works of fiction, and writers had a hard time. However, at one point, SC also realized, that fiction is a good way to ''distract the masses for a while'', at the same time putting slight political messages in the books, and increased funding for literature. Nowadays, in SC, literature usually has more dimensions, and writers can actually write something else than ''love stories, or stories of love for the Party'', as some anonymous SC's writer once said in a private conversation. However, state still keeps its eye on this industry, always screening for new possible dissent.''

(Conclusion: Writing about entire Earth was kinda hard. Okay, very hard. Both writer's block, and character limit hit me multiple times. For example, listing all of architecture on Earth would be very time consuming. I left most of the things to be imaginable for readers themselves, and encourage their own research of things (Magazines, vooks, internet sources), to get a full picture, as SC's world has elements from ours. For example, I found out about a lot of new things while writing this, especially about architecture.)

Is the Millitary as institution viewed positively or negatively by the public(and which groups view it positively/negatively): Most of the population sees the millitary as a part of growing up, some nationalists see it as a way to spread our way and other nationlists see it as a extention of the old Imperium's millitrisum of The Tryad
Are officers viewed positively or negatively:

What qualities are officers viewed as having: Tryad's officers are viewed as hard, tactical and quick thinkers as the Head of the High Tri-Council was famous for his quick tactics which won most battles he fought in.

Are soldiers viewed positively or negatively?: Being a solder is just another part of life, and their not particularly good or bad as their doing their part for society

What qualities are soldiers viewed as having?: Hard working, resilient, and even a little bit of Independence and cynicism as a solder who breaks from a commanding officer's order and fails can suffer extreme consequences, but if he were to complete the original objective or a similarly important one can get him great praise and awards for smart thinking and tactical ideas.

How does the Military influence society?: The heavy importance of doing your part in the military leak into civilian life after your service in the hierarchical society of the AST. Also the focus on mobile warfare means claustrophobia and lateness are criticized and less commonly seen.

How does society influence the Military? The kind of councils that fill the Tryadasque society flow over into military matters with many officers making decisions collectively and even military command is put through the High Tri-Council as the body is the head of state, legislation and executive affairs

Are there any festivals linked to the Millitary: The signing of the Treaty of Vorafou, that ended The War of Imperium, is celebrated as Victory Day, a defining moment of Tryadasque identity and linking the three disparit provinces into The AST.

Coffee and Tea culture in Silver Commonwealth

Postby Silver Commonwealth » Wed Jun 12, 2019 7:00 am

Data from Ministry of Foreign and Internal Affairs

Coffee and Tea culture in SC

Coffee and Tea culture in YN
Nation name: ''The World Syndicalist Republics of Silver Commonwealth, or in shortened form - SC Sometimes just called as ''The Commonwealth'' as well.''
Is coffee or tea more popular in YN?: ''It can be pretty hard to answer, because we are a world government, and both coffee, and tea traditions are strong and both have a lot of admirers, as those are one from the few things, which cross regional boundaries. Also, estimates by the government aren't 100% accurate, because it's nigh impossible to cover the entire world. However, as of now, coffee is slightly more popular than tea across the world. Proportionally to amount of citizens, tea is the most popular in Central Asian territories, but coffee - in Lower Central America.''

Coffee
How popular is coffee in YN?: ''It is one of the most popular drinks in SC's world, and is pretty popular in the Megastates of America - the main region of SC. However, they aren't the largest coffee consumers at all - Finnish are estimated to drink the most amount of coffee annually, but it is also popular in other Nordic regions, and Central America. Despite the situation still being terrible, a lot more people can afford to drink coffee regularly, and even in traditional tea bastions like East Asia, coffee is slowly starting to gain some popularity as well. As of now, it is likely, that consumption of coffee will grow in future, due of the fact, that SC's government prefers coffee plantations over tea plantations, despite both being pretty even.''
How often is it drunk, and at what time of day?: ''In most cases, tradition is to drink one cup in the morning, while either reading a newspaper, or preparing to go to work. However, in the last few years, there have been suggestions to instead drink coffee during noon, because cortisol level is high at morning, but it falls during day, and drinking coffee, when the level of it is high, is not considered as good by SC's doctors. Most often it is consumed once at day at most, as it still is a pretty expensive thing, and unlike bread, it is not a part of the ''primary needs'' section in food rations.''
How is coffee usually prepared in YN?: ''Just like with tea, there are various variants, of how to prepare coffee. As there are lots of them, we will list only a few. In SC's Finland, coffee is sometimes poured over cheese curds, creating a combo. Turkish coffee usually is unfiltered, which gives it an unique taste, and SC's soldiers have enjoyed it in their trips through Europe. In SC's Malaysia, black coffee can be mixed with Hong Kong-styled milk tea as well, and can be served both hot, and cold. In SC's Senegal, coffee is often flavored with Guinea peppers, for a particularly strong drink. In Caribbean Isles, espresso is brewed with sugar, but Irish coffee also contains whiskey, sugar, and thick cream on top. And there are many more traditions.''
Who is coffee most popular amongst?: ''Coffee is usually popular between white collar workers, and students, which often need a bit of it in order to stay awake during evening hours, in case if project is very long. For the same reason, coffee is also popular between soldiers, as in combination with energetic substances, it can keep them awake for a longer time. Of course, there are those, who drink it only with milk, and sugar - for them, it usually can be even a snack, when there are no other snacks available. A softer form of coffee is also popular between younger children, especially with already mentioned milk, and sugar.''
Is YN a producer of coffee?: ''Of course we produce coffee, as we are a world government. That said, some regions produce more coffee than others, and some don't produce coffee at all, and it is only an import good. While major coffee plantations in Indochina, India, and Indonesia were still hurt due of the disputed zone's warfare, coffee production in SC wasn't hurt as much as tea production, as there various large coffee plants itself, and the largest coffee producer in SC's world - SC's Brazil, provided most of SC's coffee before the Scramble for the World. Production of coffee is a significant part of SC's overall income, and the amount of its consumption has been rapidly increasing with development of new technologies.''

Tea
How popular is tea in YN?: ''While a bit less popular than coffee, tea is still one of the most popular drinks in the world, and is particularly popular in India, and China. Also, tea is still wildly popular in SC's Britain, despite the Cultural Revolution launched a few decades earlier - it didn't affect British tea drinking traditions that much, despite SC's first attempts to force more coffee consumption. Tea is pretty popular in Muscovy, and SC's Persia as well, as it often is a lighter drink, if compared to coffee, and can warm the body well.''
How often is it drunk, and at what time of day?: ''Often in the morning, and evening. By recent guidelines by state CEOs, it is advised to not drink tea in the middle of the day, as then sun usually is the hottest by then, and ''such substances cause you to feel even more dry'', according to the words of some CEOs. If a person follows a strong tea (or coffee) culture, they could possibly drink tea at exact periods in the daytime (Like British tea traditions, while some don't particularly care, when they drink their tea. Overall, this highly depends on local traditions.''
How is tea usually prepared in YN?: ''There are various ways of it, but we are going to list only a few from the regions. In SC's Thailand, iced tea is wildly popular. It often has condensed milk added to it as well, and spices like anise. In Tibet, black tea is often boiled for hours, and milk, salt, and yak butter are added to it afterwards. In SC's Russia, zavarka is a tea concentrate, brewed in a small metal container, and then served along with sweets, milk, and sugar, although often people drink it black too. In SC's Taiwan, bubble tea with powdered milk and sugar syrup is popular, but in mainland China, there is a long, extensive tea ceremony tradition, where cups are often arranged in a circle. There are other traditions too.''
Who is tea most popular amongst?: ''Tea is more popular between younger kids as coffee, as while children aren't usually given coffee until they are about 13-15, then tea is given at way earlier age. It is also commonly referred to as ''old people's drink'' in SC, due of stereotype of old men drinking a coffee at past time. Due of the fact, that black coffee is a lot stronger, it is also preferred by those, who hate bitter drinks. White collar workers like both tea, and coffee, actually, similarly to blue collar workers.''
Is YN a producer of tea?: ''Yes, we also produce quite a lot of tea. That said... Most of the largest tea plantations in SC's world were located in parts of the former disputed zone (China, India, Africa, etc.), which meant, that they were hurt pretty badly from the ''Perpetual war'' - a conflict between three superstates. In result, it was a massive blow to tea industry, and as SC hadn't got access to most of the largest tea plantations in other superstates as well, tea consumption decreased massively, and while it remained a tradition in Britain, tea shortages were not uncommon, as unlike bread, it wasn't put in the ''basic necessity'' food ration card. Only recently has SC taken control of all of the world's largest tea plantations, which means, that tea has started to flow once again. Still, it will take many years to fix the damages to plantations, and industry as a whole.''
