What English does YN use?

Postby Estado Novo Portugues » Tue May 22, 2018 9:39 pm

Even if English is a second/foreign language in YN, there is usually one variety that is favoured over the others. Which one is it?

In the Ecclesiastical State, English is not an official language (those are Portuguese and Latin), nor is it mandatory in schools. But where it is offered, it will always be taught with the British spelling and pronunciation.

Which English pronunciation is taught in schools?

Is one way exclusively considered the "correct" way, or are all of them acceptable? We strictly enforce the British spelling and pronunciation – students who slip into Americanisms or slang are caned on the back. Because we consider any English other than RP to be uncultured.

American English, and there is a very good reason for this. Despite being located in Europe, Happy Christian Land was founded in 1938 by Americans. There may have been some European influence in the intervening eight decades, but on the whole they are very American.

[X] Other: Alingan, the Alingan English pronuncation in Gracemeria are influenced by the other confederal languages, expecially from the Italian for not known motives.

Is one way exclusively considered the "correct" way, or are all of them acceptable? The cantonal government of Gracemeria and the Confederal Government don't matter of type of English is used. The all cantonal departments of education in all canton will mandate to all school to taught the Alingan English, but didn't say that the other's English type is not correct. The Confederal Istitute of Alingan English, will runs the use of English in the Confederal territory.

Is one way exclusively considered the "correct" way, or are all of them acceptable? All of them acceptable; but Yohannes born and bred will almost always use British English. Due to heavy Americanisation and oh so popular Star Spangled Banner since the late sixties, however, (thanks Burger King®) many youths (and even civil servants and businesspeople) regularly mix American idioms and wordings together with British English, e.g. grain of salt with pinch of salt (some without knowing; others because they just don't care). Below, for instance:

English is neither an official language of Lillorainen, nor natively spoken. Teaching English in school hasn't a long tradition yet - Lillorainians born before ~1995 will mostly have trouble, unless they learned it somewhere else.

They are all acceptable. Though, since we often mix British words into it and don't always have a clear pronunciation, you will often hear some Irish-sounding accents.

Which of the following English word choices are preferred in YN?
Airplane / aeroplane: both
Apartment / flat: apartment
Color / colour: color (we also accept "colour" though)
Cookie / biscuit: cookie
Elevator / lift: both
Highway / motorway: "highway" - though, we mostly use the German word "Autobahn" since it's less ambiguous)
Math / maths: math
Pants / trousers: pants
Recognize / recognise: recognize
Sedan / saloon: we don't really have that, but saloon is more common
Station wagon / estate: both
Theater / theatre: theater
Vacation / holiday: both
Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

Is one way exclusively considered the "correct" way, or are all of them acceptable? All of them are usually accepted, although people who spell words the British way are seen as more "proper" than people that spell words the American way. This is mostly due to the fact that people that use American spellings learnt English through American media (TV/movies/the internet/etc) while people that use British spellings learnt English while at school.

While English is not either of the official languages, the prevalence of the language in the country is rapidly increasing, particularly due to the rise of the internet and schemes by the government to increase education in the English language. English is also increasingly being used as a lingua franca between Portuguese and German speakers in areas where there are significant numbers of both people, although Portuguese is still preferred as a lingua franca.

Which English spelling is taught in schools?
[X] British
[] American
[] Other:

Which English pronunciation is taught in schools?
[] British – Received Pronunciation
[] British – regional dialects
[] American – neutral
[] American – regional dialects
[X] Other: Varies by province, there are several accents.

Regional
Standard Van Hool English - Typical accent used on television news and the upper classes, although hardly ever spoken by regular citizens. Basically just an Australian accent.
Nordhoek English - Very similar to New Zealand English, but with South African-esque Rs. Spoken in both Nordhoek and the Capital Territory.
Westislands English - Spoken in Sunshine Coast, New Flanders, and Pacifica. Mix of a typical Dutch accent, and a British accent. Some elements also of the Australian and New Zealand accents. The Prime Minister, Ariella Aitken, a bilingual native of New Flanders, is said to speak with a perfect version of this accent. By far the most common English accent.
Kempenear Engels - Spoken by the Anglo or bilingual minority in the mostly Dutch-speaking Kempenear Archipelago. Extremely influenced by a rural Dutch accent, with some elements of a West Country accent, especially when pronouncing Rs. Spoken mostly by rural people, while urban people mostly speak with Nordhoek or Westislands accents. Usually incorporates a good deal of Dutch loanwords, for example it's not a house it's a "huis" (pronounced "heys"), and it's not a footpath, it's a "stoep" (pronounced "stoop").
Societal
Bush English - Spoken by lower-class rural people, or "bushsitters". Mix of the Australian Bogan accent, and a lower class white South African accent.
Vankaans - Basically a thick Afrikaner accent, with some slight differences. Spoken by South African immigrants, from Afrikaner, English, and even black backgrounds.
Nezzie - Spoken by Indonesian communities. Closely related to an Indonesian accent, but with a great deal of influence as well from the Dutch accent.
First Nations English - Basically exactly the same as the Maori New Zealand English accent. Spoken by both Maori and First Nations groups.

Is one way exclusively considered the "correct" way, or are all of them acceptable? When it comes to spelling, British spelling is often considered more correct than American spelling. Standard Van Hool English, as noted above, is preferred by broadcasters and is seen as "more prestigious" as an accent, quite like Received Pronunciation or "BBC English" in the UK, and General American in the USA.

Which of the following English word choices are preferred in YN?
Airplane / aeroplane: Aeroplane.
Apartment / flat: It's complicated;
Apartment = Rented property in a building with other rented properties. Building can be short or tall. As long as it's rented and in an apartment
complex, it's an apartment.
Flat/strata = Owned property located in a building with other owned properties. Strata can also refer to an entire building, usually a newer high rise tower block.
Townhouse = Either a terraced rowhouse or a detached condominium.
Color / colour: Colour.
Cookie / biscuit: Cookie when soft, biscuit when hard.
Elevator / lift: Lift.
Engineer / train driver: Engineer.
Highway / motorway: Both used, alongside freeway. Freeway and motorway refer to larger expressways, while highway refers to all major intercity roads.
Math / maths: Maths.
Pants / trousers: Pants.
Principal / headmaster: Headteacher.
Recognize / recognise: Recognise.
Sedan / saloon: Sedan.
Station wagon / estate: Wagon.
Theater / theatre: Theatre.
Vacation / holiday: Holiday.

Which English pronunciation is taught in schools?

[x] American – neutral
[] American – regional dialects
[x] Other: There is a distinct Freneq English accent, which reduces some diphthongs in a standard American accent into monophtongs, and pronounces the affrictate “ch” at the end of words as the fricative “sh,” but most differences are not easily detectible. It is often taught for domestic news broadcasts, while the Standard Anerican is used for international broadcasts.

Is one way exclusively considered the "correct" way, or are all of them acceptable? Both the Standard American and Freneq English accents are acceptable. The American way of spelling, however, is considered the only correct way, though some British spellings might have a different meaning than the American (e.g. theater v. theatre)

Which of the following English word choices are preferred in YN?
Airplane / aeroplane: airplane
Apartment / flat: apartment, though “flat” is used for some cheaper apartments that don’t amount to slums.
Color / colour: color
Cookie / biscuit: cookie
Elevator / lift: elevator
Engineer / train driver: “operator” is preferred over both, but of the two “engineer” is preferred.
Highway / motorway: highway
Math / maths: math
Pants / trousers: pants
Principal / headmaster: principal
Recognize / recognise: recognize
Sedan / saloon: sedan
Station wagon / estate: station wagon (though the style is now archaic, and only automotive enthusiasts would distinguish between a sedan and a station wagon)
Theater / theatre: theatre if referring to the art, theater if referring to the place
Vacation / holiday: vacation
I’m mostly here for... something to do, I suppose.

Pauxia is an MT, Type 6 Civilization that follows a modified form of National Socialism. It is situated in a fictional continent called Orlica, which has an approximate size of real life North America. In Pauxia, preserving our own race is an important priority. People of different race would be deported or be killed in a genocide.
Pauxian Daily News: Gen. Gale Harper, known for being ferocious and abusive, dies at 86. | 13 members of The Resistance were killed by the Pauxian Armed Forces in a surprise attack. | Level of unemployment drops, more jobs being provided as a result of heavy military spending.
