Conscription

by Agarntrop
I'd like everyone in this forum to 1. Say if they have conscription in their country and if so, how long for and what age it starts at etc...2. Express their personal opinion on conscription (recommended but optional)

1. The republic of Agarntrop has a policy of conscription and everyone without special disabilities must undergo 30 weeks of military service.
2. I don't support conscription but my opinion is not that strong on it.

Only in times of a serious war where the country is in danger of being occupied and/or genocided if it loses. Such wars have not existed for centuries. It is possible that conscription might be introduced but not at the moment.

Mandatory for all male citizens when they reach the age of 18. Normally the training and service is 1 year, but conscripts may be ordered to serve again if they are caught misbehaving during their service. The Ecclesiastical State is not currently at war with any nation, so the conscripts are assigned peacetime jobs like maintenance and emergency aid.

We have no conscription.

Personally, the idea appalls me.

1. All able-bodied Allyrians upon turning 18 must perform 24 months in any branch of HM's Armed Forces in-order to gain Tier-1 Citizen status (able to enter public sector jobs, access to state-funded healthcare, property rights etc). In addition, they must remain enlisted in the Reserves until the age of 41 and complying with all responsibilities which come with that.
2. I personally feel that time in the Military builds character and deepens the connection one has with their nation's history but also with their compatriots as it's a shared experience but a shared duty and responsibility to one another. It also teaches one lifeskills so I believe that on the whole conscription is positive and healthy for society.

The League of the Six Free Peoples has no conscription. However all La Cosa Fedora members serve or are eligible to be called up in times of emergency.

Of course, normies can be "volunteered" just as if they were conscripted should the need arise.

1. It's not exactly conscription, but all Hansdeltanian citizens are required to register with the government when they turn 18 for conscription. While the Hansdeltanian military is currently all-volunteer, if manpower shortages occur in wartime then the government can begin the draft and pick random citizens for conscription. This is called Selective Service.

2. I'd go with Selective Service—you register for the draft while it's all volunteer.

1. Either 1 year military service or 1 and a half year civil service is required for those (male and female) without disability in New Neruda sometime between the age of 19 and 30. If this requirement is not met by an able-bodied and able-minded person, a special tax is placed on the individual. For many military conscripts, they mainly fill various support roles. So, military service is not necessarily mandatory.

2. My system is inspired by the Swiss system of conscription, which I do believe is a good policy and reflects my views.

by The New California Republic
1. The New California Republic has conscription. 3 years is the normal length of conscription. Conscripts can go back to civilian life after their service period is finished, or enlist full time if they wish, and if their performance record was "good" or better. The standard age of conscription is 18, but can be deferred for University students, or permanently exempted from service if the person has a disability or a sick relative that they must care for. Conscientious objectors have an option to be sent to the medical or logistics corps. Conditions in the NCR Military are generally good for conscripts, with paid leave and subsidized holiday camps for conscripts and their families. Many conscripts enjoy their period of service, as it also allows them to access military shops that often stock a range of goods that may be hard to come by.

2. Personally I am in favour of conscription, provided that the conscripts get reasonable compensation for their time and effort.

by Coconut Palm Island
We do not have any type of conscription on Coconut Palm Island. We believe that conscription is a violation of a person's basic human right to choose not to fight.

However, because of our small military, we do maintain an *all volunteer* militia (similar to the national guard, but more prevalent in society), to be used only in times of crisis (natural disaster or invasion). Anyone over the age of 16 can join the militia, and they can leave at any time. Citizens are given many incentives to be in the militia-- discounts on guns, tax breaks, free stuff, etc. A militia member who is called and does not report for duty is not punished; they are, however, barred from further participation in the militia and loose the benefits it provides.

So no, no conscription, no draft, nothing like that. We have an all-volunteer system in case we get into any real trouble, and that's more than enough.

by Skyhooked
1. Skyhooked has no conscription at all, and will never introduce it. Instead, we allow evey our citizen to possess firearms, so in case of war, they can aid.

2. I am against conscription, cause I belive, that young men must never be dragged into wars or military service by force. For me it's no better than slavery. Besides, not every guy is a good fighter.

Both men and women are required to do two years of national service upon reaching 18 years of age. This can be done at any point before they reach 35.

EDIT: To include opinion.

I'm personally on the fence about conscription. I feel it helps teach discipline and the importance of order and a healthy sleep schedule in young adults, however see potential drawbacks and a general opposed attitude to serving by many.

Conscription is incompatible with the ideal of Christian pacifism. Therefore the military voluntarily recruits those who don't subscribe to strict Christian pacifism.

Conscription was abolished in Polyspastonia in 2000, and as such the military is entirely voluntary.

I am personally strongly against conscription.

Consription is outlawed in Exosar, we have a volunteer army consisting of humans and robots.

This does reflect my IRL opinion, No one should every be forced to serve in the military.

by Ankuran
Conscription is unused except in the event of disaster or large-scale threat to Ankuran, directly or indirectly. Drafts haven't been called for combat purposes since the revolution, but they've been called for various natural disasters, usually hurricanes. When not deployed, the AAF are assigned public works and infrastructure duties, and can be assigned to domestic peacekeeping and SWAT duties when the need arises (it rarely does).

Ideally, conscription should be reserved for emergencies and massive threats to national sovereignty.

Age it starts:18(although may be deferred to another time in the case of university students)
How long for: a year
Reasons: the main reason is that it is unfair if people expect other people to fight for things that they only have because those people risked their lives without them doing so themselves.
Conscientious objectors are exempt because they would rather those other people didn't fight either.
In Islamic wars(to protect foreign Muslims) only Muslims shall be drafted.

Kyneland has mandatory service, which begins once someone is 20 years of age. It is usually 2 years of service.
The reasons is to maintain a ready and trained population in the case of war. However, we only maintain 5,000 active personnel, with 20,000 in reserves.
Those with disabilities are trained in other things, like cooking and the like. The military also trains people in other skills, like survival and home-keeping.
IRL, I support mandatory service.

The Radiatian Federation used to have conscription but has since replaced it with a Selective Service System in which conscription is only used in times of national emergencies.

Mercia-Northumbria moved to fully professional armed forces in 1999. However the State has the authority to conscript men between the ages of 18 and 40 in the event of an invasion or insurrection against the government of Mercia-Northumbria.

Conscription technically exists, especially in wartime, but the Imperial Government voted to suspend it indefinitely, after some states began to waive military service requirements.
