WELCOME TO CASTION
A Cold War tech worldbuilding and roleplaying region!

Castion is a Cold War themed roleplaying region founded in 2018, focused on realistic, believable lore, serious in-character posting, all with a fun and vibrant out-of-character community. We welcome everyone, from those new to NationStates (and to political and diplomatic roleplay), to veteran members of the forums and RP community. While IC events occur forumside, lore is all documented on iiwiki and discussed heavily in the regional Discord server.

GEOGRAPHY:
Brief background of nation (or link to iiwiki page): Wallais is a small, landlocked country in western Vreya, bordered by Rohst and Rouesia. Historically it was a stomping ground for larger empires seeking to take advantage of its fertile valleys and mineral-rich mountains, which have forced the Wallesians into being a hardy people not unfamiliar with war or patriotism. However following a bloody rebellion in the late 1930's, the Duke and his allies were overthrown by Jacobin rebels, who in-turn were ousted out of the government by hardline communist political thugs who had once assisted them. Today, Wallais stands in an uneasy position surrounded by powers who'd seek to make it democratic or reinstate its former monarchy.

Geography and climate of nation: Wallais shares the Lindes Alps on its northern and western borders borders with Rohst and Rouesia. Year-round the weather is relatively cool, covered in mixed pine and broadleaf forests which dot the hills and valleys.

POWER PROJECTION:
How will your nation fit within the existing regional power structure? (strengths/weaknesses): Militarily speaking, Wallais is in a precarious position surrounded by potential enemies. While it is relatively small, it has sought to find friends with major powers such as the Aitic Federation.
If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so?: I would lower its GDP and the efficiency of its combat forces.

Geography and climate of nation: Most of the Cirreans and Calians are located in small densely populated areas on the Cirrean Sea, while much of the inland regions are inhabited by Poicarians and are a vast expanse of pine forests, and large river systems. The Aitic Mountains from which the Federation draws its name is a large mountain range stretching across the Federation.

The far north is inhabited by Hasaamans and Nuneei in small numbers, and is mostly arctic tundra. Vepsians mostly live in the east of the country which is a wide steppe and Granzerians live in the more temperate Central Vreyan climate along the Granzerian border with vast forests and temperate plains.

The Northwestern stretches of the largest island are rocky and mountainous, while a lowlands runs through the eastern coast, with a hilly spine running along with west of the island.

How will your nation fit within the existing regional power structure? (strengths/weaknesses): As the general leader of or at least primary power of the Republican Entente Westfolck will have interactions with other powers in coercing them into the pact, or at least out of the pacts of it's communist and authoritarian rivals.
If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so?: Probably reduce it's population, army size, and or it's capacity to supply it's own gear to it's army.

Brief background of nation (or link to iiwiki page): Rouesia first emerged as a number of city-states, small republics, and minature monarchies on the collapse of the Velonian Empire in the 470s(??). The most influential of these city-states was Milizano, a initially Alian tribe. Milizano was founded in 402, as Milazanus, and became a powerful city-state in 579. The first moves towards Rouesian unification began in 1437, when Cosimo Covarni was elected Ruler of the Grand Republic of Milizana. His elder brother, Johani, was Doge of Toranus, prompting a personal union which began to expand. The Covarni family spread to the leaderships of many Rouesian states. In 1439, the Muraine joined the union after a large trade deal. The following year, the Champaignes archipelago, now submerged, was aquired. Rouesia was divided between merchants that supported and opposed the Covarni union. In 1442, Cosimo proposed to the other Rouesian states, a trade league that would unite merchants into a single confederal nation. Over the next two years, states either joined or were forcefully added. The trade league became official in 1444, uniting most of modern Rouesia. Cosimo betrayed and murdered his brother, and his ancestors ruled the league for many decades. In 1509, descendants of Johani had Cosimo III brutally killed, beginning the Rouesian Turbulence. The period of civil conflict only ended in 1569, when Melcio Johann Covarni defeated the final Cosimians, and ended the 50 Years War. He proclaimed the Covarni Empire, and himself as Johani I. The empire lived up to it's name, taking control of most of the Gothic Sea. It wasn't until 1737 with the crowning of Augusto IV, that the empire began to decline. Augusto's disastrous policies lost much territory from the empire. By 1747 the Covarni Empire had all but ceased to exist. On March 13th, 1748, Medici duKaix, descendant of the Cosimos, together with a group of nobles, invited Augusto to a banquet celebrating 10 years since his coronation. While a toast was being held by Medici, 4 men dragged Augusto away from his chair and sat him down in front of Medici, who joined in with the spectacular and bloody murder of the young king. Medici proclaimed the Kingdom of Rouesia, and House of Covarni-duKaix, as well as himself as Rufus I. In this period, a newer dialect developed (RL Norman language), due to the exclusion of the Covarni colonies. The monarchy continued until 1872, with the Rouesian Revolution toppling the monarchy and executing Martin III. The regime continued on terms of friendship and support of Rohst. In 1982, Klaus Vayeaux became the 5th Rouesian Chief of State. He honorably appointed his predeccessor, Jaque du Martel, 8th Prime Minister.

Geography and climate of nation: Torchina primarily has a warm summer climate, with a hot desert climate in the interior of Sudivestru. The climate of a majority of the nation is characterised by hot, dry summers and rainy winters. In the summer, cold currents prevent rain clouds from forming and cause the weather in the region to be very dry and stable. However, in the winter, the ocean currents shift and the water that has been warmed up all summer moves closer to land and often brings rain but keeps the weather mild. Snowfall in the lowlands of the nation is rare, but snow does fall in the mountainous regions of the northern interior of Maria proper. Whilst this snow does not fall in the coastal cities, stronger cold waves can easily carry the snow down from the mountains and into the hills, and on occasion even the coastal cities.

Summers in Gaviotia and Gillemi, as well as the south coast of Maria and the north coast of Sudivestru, are affected greatly winds from the interior of Arcola and are often scorching.

POWER PROJECTION:
How will your nation fit within the existing regional power structure? (strengths/weaknesses): Torchina is a fading empire and one of the primary powers of the Republican Entente, the days of strong power projection are long since past but Torchina maintains a very powerful navy and its position within the Erdion grants it sizeable power projection within Southern Vreya. Soft power and cultural projection is also exhibited through its ties to its former colonies, eg. Khautsala and linguistic communities.

(strengths/weaknesses): Cestros sees themselves as the "Vanguards" against the Red and Autocratic threats which reside to its north. It maintains a large, well-funded and active military due to this. Cestros looks to co-operate heavily with friendly neighbouring nations as well as members of the Entente. The economy is experiencing slow but steady growth as a result of increased economic activity in Marazh.

Formerly, Torroso was a province of the !notRomanEmpire and was inhabited with people of !notCeltic origin. The admixture following the collapse of the empire saw the group diversify into what is known to be the Torrosoan people of today (!notGalician). Torroso, once a massive colonial empire, now is trying to hold on to the remains of what once was. With the openly anti-decolonization regime in place, Torroso is once again to hold the to the test of time.

In pursuit of this, Torroso has a sizeable navy to regulate trade and enforce rule. Currently, the nation is expanding their aerial fleet, while the army is under staffed and is undergoing reform.

(strengths/weaknesses): While a strong state within Vreya, even with limited power projection capability, Verheit cannot hope to take on major hostile powers like Rohst on its own, and thus has strongly embedded its armed forces within the [Socialist Bloc]'s military structure. The VDR's main geopolitical disadvantage is its distance from the Socialist Aitic Federation, so in case of hostilites, the National Volksarmee must hold long enough for reinforcements to arrive.

Increased trade consolidated power into a few core cities, who conquered the small kingdoms between them and feuded for control over the middle ages and renaissance. The Century of Turmoils further centralized control into just two kingdoms; Grasswander in the north and Sydernrealm in the south. Maegenland failed to unify across the 19th century, preventing it from becoming a colonial power and exerting influence. Grasswander allied to Rohst before the Great War, and invaded Sydernrealm while Westfolck was too burdened to assist the south. Even so, the war lasted three years and left a heavy toll on the country, especially hurting the south. The country was officially unified under the northern throne, but the friendship with Rohst and their authoritarianism was deeply unpopular. Some time after war’s end, the royal veto of a highly anticipated parliamentary act resulted in nationwide protests and a short inter-military civil war. It all culminated in the “Magshan Reversal”, where Folcker military was secretly brought in to backstab Rohst, and soon the official switching of blocs. Today, Maegenland and Westfolck are closely integrated defensively and economically, although the Magsh are struck with corrupt leadership, declining industries and an uncertain future.

Geography and climate of nation: A rich coastal plain covers the northern coast, which then ascend into the Great Maegers mountain range that runs across the middle of the country, reaching heights of 2500 meters. South of this, valleys and hills dominate, with farms and cities packed inside them near the coasts while the inlands are best suited for grazing. Land-based economies include coal mining, fishing, farming and great herds of sheep and cattle. The north’s climate is a typically rainy, temperate oceanic one, with tundra and glacial climates in the mountains. The south receives somewhat less rain than the north, but it comes at all times of year; the inland has a cool continental climate, and the coast a warmer seaside one.

But its people have a great sense of defiance, waiting to once again expel their masters when the time comes right.
