2041 Darmeni Election: Overseas-Multiverse Constituency

Postby Darmen » Mon Apr 23, 2018 6:53 am

OOC: While there are separate constituencies for overseas voters in the regions of Rushmore, Atlantian Oceania and Esportiva, nations from those regions are free to vote here. Also, while there is only one seat up for grabs, Darmeni elections are still conducted via closed-party list proportional representation. Therefore the ballot lists the party names first, and then the candidate names.

2041 Darmeni Election: Overseas-Multiverse Consituency

With four years of competent leadership by Tor Tong Lee and his center-right Movement for a New Darmen (MND) coalition now complete, it is time for Darmeni citizens throughout the Multiverse to decide Darmen's path into the future. This particular constituency, officially titled Overseas-Rest of Multiverse will elect a single member of Parliament. Five candidates from five parties are contesting the seat. Questions, comments and concerns can be posted here by eligible Darmeni voters from any nation to the candidates. Candidates will attempt to answer/respond to these as appropriate in a quick and timely manner.

Mabon McNeil | Movement for a New Darmen (MND)
56 years old and a former civil servant with the Department of Foreign Affairs, McNeil is the candidate for the MND. He is married has two children (a boy and a girl) and speaks English only. He is a member of the Christian Democratic Party (CDP) within his coalition. McNeil has proposed the establishment of bilateral treaties between Darmen and foreign nations, particularly Rushmori ones, to increase cooperation in economic and military matters. He has pledged to end double taxation for Darmeni's living abroad, and has also stated his intent to promote increased transportation links between Darmen and the outside world. McNeil is against Darmeni entry into the Common Rushmori Community, and sees this series of treaties as a better alternative.

Émile Ó Loingsigh | United Left (UL)
A bilingual speaker of English & French, Ó Loingsigh is 61 years old and sits between the Social Democratic and Democratic Socialist wings of his party. He is a member of the National Labor Party (NLP) within his coalition. Ó Loingsigh has made it his goal to establish links between Darmeni trade unions and foreign counterparts, and has also pushed for fairer trade deals. Ó Loingsigh has also proposed levying an emigration tax on emigrants with a net worth of $500,000 or more.

Agustín Plaskett | Royalist Party (RP)
A supporter of Darmeni pretender Maxwell Romanov, the English & Spanish speaking Plaskett proposes abolishing the Republic and reinstating the Monarchy of Darmen. He is 42 years old and works as an insurance salesman. He advocated strongly against the establishment of the Republic and has spoken out vigorously against President Tor Tong Lee.

Duane Savidge | National Civil Liberal Democratic Union (NCLDU)
Savidge is 49 years old and speaks only English. A massive supporter of Darmeni membership in the Common Rushmori Community, Savidge is a civics teacher in the 11th grade. Savidge has proposed increasing the number of opportunities for Darmeni students to study abroad. He has also promoted Darmeni membership in multilateral organizations which promote peace and human rights.

Paulina Seymour | Darmen Libertarian Party (DLP)
Speaking both English & Italian, the 43 year old Seymour is the only female candidate. She works as an executive with Ilgana Automotive, overseeing their overseas vehicle exports. Seymour is a proponent of free trade, however, she opposes Darmen joining the Common Rushmori Community, due to the large amount of bureaucracy within the organization. She has also proposed reducing the number of overseas embassies which Darmen maintains, and replacing them with a government run-website where services for Darmeni's living abroad can be requested. According to Seymour, this would save the Department of Foreign Affairs over 50% of its budget.

OOC: A story about the overall election, focusing on the Movement for a New Darmen and President Tor Tong Lee.

President Lee and MND ready themselves for tough campaign
Image
From left to right: President Tor Tong Lee, Speaker of Parliament Alex Quinn,
Labor Secretary Bruce Weiner and Mayor of Scott City Gunnarr Shine

SCOTT CITY - Members of the Movement for a New Darmen (MND) gathered for a rally on Tuesday, April 9th, one day prior to the coalition's nominating convention and one day after President Tor Tong Lee delivered a speech before Parliament on live television. Thousands of supporters of the President and his fellow government officials gathered outside of the Scott City Convention Center, cheering loudly as various members of the MND gave rousing speeches about successes achieved by the government over the past four years. Notably absent was Foreign Affairs Secretary Joshua Rademacher, who is the leader of the Liberal Conservative Party which makes up almost a third of MND members.

President Lee's first four years in office have passed by with relative success. With tax income flowing into government coffers, the Republic has remained stable as Parliament and the Executive Cabinet have engaged in nation building. Education, health and transportation services have been established throughout Darmen. Basic welfare programs have been put in place and crime has been kept low. Lee has shown himself to be an efficient leader, rarely getting entangled in prolonged political wrangling, and has implemented almost 80% of his policy goals.

However, Lee's presidency hasn't been completely without controversy. After rival factions of the MND-led Scott City Municipal Council refused to cooperate in governing the city, Lee issued a State of Emergency and had 16 members of his own party jailed in order to implement a functioning municipal government. While many saw the move to removed the uncooperative municipal councilors as necessary to restore needed services (particularly sanitation - as garbage hadn't been collected in two months), others saw it as an over extension of the President's power to issue a State of Emergency.

Lee and Secretary of State for Labor Bruce Weiner have also come under fire for the lack of employment opportunities in Darmen. 37.14% of the Darmeni workforce lacks full time employment and a program for large scale jobs creation has been slow in coming. President Lee has been relatively silent on the issue, only going so far as to confirm its importance without actually giving any suggestions for a solution. In addition, the Darmeni Stock Exchange Market has fallen over 610 points over the past three weeks, as investors are growing increasingly nervous ahead of the elections.

Once the MND releases their party lists on Thursday following the nomination convention, the direction the coalition plans to take will come into better focus. It is widely expected that Rademacher's Liberal Conservative Party will receive a lower number of nominations than four years ago, as that party increasingly becomes pro-Darmeni membership in the Common Rushmori Community, something President Lee still remains skeptical of.

Other political parties and coalitions are expected to hold rallies and nominating conventions within the next few days, and by then the election campaign will be in full swing. Lee and the MND will have a hard task before them to win over enough voters to maintain their already slim Parliamentary majority.

All three Parliamentary candidates and their respective parties are thankful for the opportunity to answer the questions posed to them by the Darmeni voters in Zwangzug and Yohannes.

Mr. Savidge: what do you see as the benefits of joining the Rushmori Community? What are your opinions on a single currency?

Darmen has entered a new modern and progressive era which calls for cooperation with international partners. The Common Rushmori Community represents the biggest opportunity for Darmen to do just this: cooperate with regional neighbors to deliver Rushmoris with the highest amount of mutual benefits possible. The CRC’s common market, free of trade barriers between members, would be a massive opportunity for Darmen to increase its exports and improve its economy and employment situation.

As for a common currency: the Orean Accord which dictates the terms of the CRC specifically states that monetary policy is to be solely decided by each member state. Mr. Savidge and the NCLDU are officially neutral on the possibility of establishing a common Rushmori currency.

Mr. Ó Loingsigh: what do you believe are the biggest issues facing Darmen today?

The massive unemployment of Darmeni workers is by far the biggest problem currently facing the Republic. A massive public works program is necessary to provide much needed employment, with workers being tasked to build much needed bridges and highways which haven’t been updated in the last three decades. The money earned by workers in these programs can be used to spur further economic growth in other areas of the economy.

In addition, laws must be enacted to limit the amount of automation that can be undertaken by Darmeni manufacturing companies. Far too many Darmeni workers have been displaced in recent years by robots.

Mr. McNeil: what methods of transportation do you suggest for your proposed developments?

Darmeni’s looking to travel abroad currently have only two options: travel by ship or plane. While the number of ships carrying passengers from Darmeni ports to foreign destinations are plentiful, travel by ship is expensive and slow. Travel by plane on the other hand is relatively cheap (about $329 USD per flight) and fast, but the only international flights in Darmen are between Scott City and the eastern Rushmori cities of Cenial, Ceni and Centralis, Electrum (via Air Terranea). Increasing the number of international flights to and from Darmen will make it easier for Darmenis to book direct flights to their destinations, rather than needing to book a second flight from Cenial or Centralis to their destination. This can be accomplished by securing agreements between foreign airports and Darmeni airlines, as well as foreign airlines and the Scott City International Airport.

To the Candidate Mabon McNeil: Does he stand by all his statements?

Mr. McNeil would like to ask for clarification on which statements are being referenced. In general however, Mr. McNeil does not see any reason why he would need to retract any previous statements.

To the Candidate Mabon McNeil: If so, where was he when President Tor Tong Lee issued his State of Emergency address, and put into prison sixteen members from the Movement for a New Darmen party?

Mr. McNeil was serving in his capacity as a civil servant with the Department of Foreign Affairs.

To the Candidate Mabon McNeil: Will he commit to a reduction in the number of children living in poverty by 2020 [sic] in Darmen?

Mr. McNeil is committed to ending poverty among all Darmenis (children, adults and the elderly). Expanding and strengthening existing welfare programs will be among his priorities while in Parliament.

To the Candidate Mabon McNeil: What does the fiscal years 2018-2019 [sic] economic report show about the condition or health of the government books?

The expansion in the number of income sources for the Treasury has certainly improved the government’s financial standing. The government will be faced with the challenge of paying off the large amounts of debt accumulated by local governing authorities, but is otherwise mostly debt free. In the future, government budgets must be proposed which limit the amount of new debt incurred, while still providing the necessary funding for government programs.

To the Candidate Mabon McNeil: What does he think of the state of investment, trade openness, and foreign direct investment in Darmen at present?

Currently, the number of foreign businesses operating within Darmen is extremely low. Opening Darmen up to foreign businesses will increase employment opportunities and corporate income tax collection, while also benefiting the businesses with new customer demographics. Darmen must be careful however to limit the amount of predatory business practices conducted by foreign corporations.

To the Candidate Mabon McNeil: Does he stand by the World Assembly’s standards in matters of freedom of speech, political freedom, and open justice?

Mr. McNeil believes that the standards set by the World Assembly in the areas of freedom of speech, political freedom and open justice serve as a good basis for governments around the multiverse to conduct their business efficiently and effectively.

National Parliament/Congress is called the Alþing. Each of the 18 constituent republics has its own Þing. Our national head leader is called the "Lawgiver".
We speak an language called Yggandan or Pacific Norse. The latter name hints at our background- descendents of Norse settlers that didn't just reach Vinland, but crossed the ithsmus of Panama and struck out for the Pacific! (Not the most realistic scenario, but I don't really care).

"Will he commit to a reduction in the number of children living in poverty by 2020"

Out of character: Copied from one of the questions for a New Zealand member of parliament in 2018. There's no mistake there (or need to put [sic] there)! The sentence structure was intentional: to trick the politician with the emotive word 'poverty' (which is not the same as real, absolute poverty)

Fiscal Years 2018-2019 (to be enacted) also! No need to put [sic] as that was also intentional (to trick the politician).

Very nice political thread! There's depth to this thread. I Love it!

In character: Darmeni citizens in Yohannes have voted in droves for Émile Ó Loingsigh's party because Mabon McNeil is not a seasoned politician (and he did not know how to use [sic] properly - kidding!). Nevertheless he performed quite well and ~3% of Darmeni citizens in Yohannes have voted for him.

Yoram Nash and United Left make strides in Scott City
Public Works Program Announced

Image
Yoram Nash delivers a speech to Trade Unions in Scott City
SCOTT CITY - Yoram Nash, Presidential candidate for the United Left, delivered a campaign speech to a joint meeting of the National Fishermen's Union and the Alliance of Automotive Workers on Wednesday in Scott City, where the party has been gaining in popularity. In the speech, Nash laid out his plans to increase subsidies to both the fishing and automotive industries, while also announcing plans for a large public works program.

While the subsidies announcement can easily be viewed as pandering to his audience, Nash's public works program is far more interesting. A three year, $20 billion plan will create 300,000 jobs, at least according to Nash. The workers would be tasked with updating two important hydroelectric dams, the Tyger River and Tyne River dams, and would also replace over 10,000 miles of highway and rural roads throughout southern Darmen. At least five new bridges would be constructed and the port of Rogerton would be dredged for the first time in 35 years to increase its depth from 22 meters to 27 meters. It is not known however if Nash's plan will create any long term jobs; his plan could very well be a band-aid over what is a massive issue.

Nonetheless, the United Left has been making consistent strides in the polls, especially in Scott City, where they now appear to be headed towards claiming a majority of the seats in the Municipal Council. Such a result would be a massive defeat for the Movement for a New Darmen, who currently hold a 10 seat majority in the Council. Numerous other parties seem to also be increasing their support, most notably the far-right Fascist & Ultranationalist Union. Evandrus O'Mooney's controversial party has been capitalizing on anti-Common Rushmori Community sentiment that has been growing in Darmen over the past few years, and has seen its membership increase by over 30%. The Green Party, which split from the United Left last year, is also looking like it will play an important role in Darmeni politics in the future, polling at approximately 5% in Scott City.

Election Tomorrow: Coalition looks imminent
President Tor Tong Lee likely to retain seat

SCOTT CITY - Final pre-election polls show the Movement for a New Darmen (MND) to likely finish second in total votes behind the United Left (UL) in tomorrow's general election. However, when applied to the number of seats each party is likely to earn, the MND are predicted to actually win more than the UL.

The poll, conducted by Surveys R Us, predicts MND will win 63 of 166 total seats in Parliament, as 27.5% of poll respondents selected the center-right coalition as their preferred option. Meanwhile, the UL will claim 59 seats, as 37.4% of respondents selected the left-wing coalition as their preferred option. Both parties will fall short of the 84 seats needed for a majority. President Lee hinted last week that should this indeed happen, he would likely invite the UL into a grand coalition. President Lee also reaffirmed that any government involving the MND would also include the People's Party and Lista de Valladar.

Concurrently with the elections for the Parliament are the elections for the Local Governing Authorities. There are expected to be several changes in the leadership of the LGA's, with Scott City's Municipal Council likely to be controlled by a United Left-led coalition. Other LGA's potentially changing hands include: Western Chuckio (MND to UL), Tempala (MND to UL) and Northern Chuckio (no overall control to MND).

Despite the uncertainty of who will govern in Parliament and local government, the Presidential election appears to be a foregone conclusion. Both the People's Party and Lista de Valladar have announced incumbent President Tor Tong Lee as their second choice candidate. Additionally, Lee will likely earn the support of the Fascist & Ultranationalist Union as they are unlikely to support either Yoram Nash of the UL or Rowland McNab of the National Civil Liberal Democratic Union. Nash and McNab are the only other candidates besides Lee who have a legitimate chance of winning the Presidency. The Presidential election will take place next Tuesday, when all MP's and MLGA's meet in Scott City to form the Electoral College, electing the President via exhaustive ballot.

As Predicted: UL earns most votes, MND wins most seats
MND-led Grand Coalition expected

SCOTT CITY - Napoléon Cockburn, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, announced the results of yesterday's election at 3pm today. As had been predicted by polls conducted earlier this week, the United Left did indeed best the Movement for a New Darmen in total votes won, however, the MND remained the largest party in Parliament, despite losing 13 seats. The results were received by both parties rather sedately, neither party claiming victory and both acknowledging that they will likely work together as a "Grand Coalition" if negotiations are successful.

Turnout was up slightly compared to the 2036 elections, 48.84% this year compared to 47.39% four and a half years ago. The increase has been attributed to a number of different reasons, most likely among them the warmer temperatures and lack of rain.

The MND suffered most of its losses in the capital, Scott City. The center-right coalition lost 41 of its seats in the Municipal Council, the losses come following a scandal involving several MND MLGA's that was only resolved by the intervention of President Tor Tong Lee. The United Left won 47 of the 110 seats in the Municipal Council, 9 short of the 56 needed for a majority. The local leader of the UL in Scott City, Christoffer Drummond, announced that he would seek to form a "Grand Coalition" at the local level as well, involving the MND and the Green Party.

Four Counties have evenly split Local Governing Authorities, and will likely leave their County Administrator positions vacant for the next four years. This is the exact same situation that Northern Chuckio County has faced for the last four years, although that County now finds itself under MND leadership.

Alex Quinn, member of the MND from Western Chuckio County, is expected to be reelected to the position of Speaker of Parliament in two days time when Parliament meets for the first time. The Electoral College will gather together the next day, where it is expected to reelect Tor Tong Lee as President for a second term. President Lee is expected to replace Vice President Donald O'Donahaue with the leader of the UL, Yoram Nash, if indeed the two parties join together in the "Grand Coalition." O'Donahaue will likely replace the Foreign Affairs Secretary, Joshua Rademacher, who has fallen out with the President over the issue of Darmeni membership in the Common Rushmori Community.
