How are the Jails in your nation?

Postby Adytus » Fri Apr 20, 2018 2:40 am

Jails are extremely important for maintaining civilized society in any nation. Understanding how a nation has organized their prison system can tell you a lot about the wider scope of policy. Some nations have no jails, others have their entire population surrounded by wired fences. In Adytus, prisons are made of cardboard to help keep the guards on their feet. People who attempt to break out are shot on site, so the cardboard isn't as bad as you think. So, how are jails/prisons in your nation?

In Alexandregia, especially in the straits region, every prison is the same as every normal house in Alexandregia (since we have low crime rate). At some occasions, former luxury prisons are transformed into four-six star hotels.

Tysoania's only jail is a work camp in the Himalayans, and mostly houses captured rebels. The nation's justice system has collapsed into summary sentencing by military patrols or the National Police, so most prisoners can expect to spend between 10 years and a lifetime in the camp, if they survive the shock of the first few months in the camp's mines. Food is minimal, the guards are usually bitter veterans of the ongoing civil war, and work hours in the camp's mine are long.

Inmates that are given lesser sentences are usually put in chain gangs clearing debris or building roads, and are kept in nearby army barracks.

We don't have jail, we have minor labor camps. Your "labor" varies according to the length of your sentence. If you are in jail for just a week, you work in recycling center and carry piles of used papers or something... if you are jailed for years, you go to metal mines.

Contrary to popular beliefs, you will never be sent to uranium mines in jail sentence. It is only reserved for professional miners.

Pretty much this. Some people that misbehave have their freedom of movement restricted for a period of time, but it's done with a view to rehabilitation and includes medical and psychological treatment as required, and a tailored educational curriculum.

"Military Detention" is the official designation.
There are three detention centers located within every military district (Nine Total), with each center spanning an approximate land area of 1000 acres.
The Detention Centers are heavily guarded by armed military police and Mobile Automated Sentinels (MAS) equipped with advanced identification and motion detection systems. In addition, detention centers are surrounded by 50 feet titanium walls with only a few entry points allowing personnel in and out of the prison.

Inmate populations average at a quota of 30,000 individual persons at any given time. A vast majority of the prisoner population comprise of alien immigrants or former Militannian military officials/personnel that had deserted their military post or sought exile in a foreign state and were captured by the Militannian Military.
Prisoners are subject to hard-labor without any form of monetary compensation. Prisoner rations are distributed only once a day and usually consist of the bare minimum with respect to nutritional/protein supplementation.
Prisoners are subject to daily floggings and other forms of public humiliation by sentries and Militannian nationals (if there is an official public staging event).

Executions, public or private, are frequent within the detention system averaging at around 2000 deaths per given month. Executions are necessary to offset the perpetual influx of new prisoners and the potential decline in available prison space.

Very Scandinavian. Most prisons are compounds with houses, and prisoners are provided with education services in order to help them once they are out of prison. High security prisons are generally more walled off, but prisoners are provided with accommodations in their cell. Food service is generally handled by the officers at the location and are provided by the prisoners who work in the kitchen.

Overall, they're much more like rehabilitation centres than prisons.

We have no jails as you know them we imprison our criminals, political dissidents, those whom have fallen out of favor of the Emperor or the government in labor camps to work endless grueling hours in the mines or factories for the military until they die. Others get tortured for hours or days until they succumbed to their injuries.

Daisy chain gangs plant flowers and pick up litter, and jails have become colloquially known as "vampire houses" due to requiring healthy prisoners to donate blood.

Prisons in the Ecclesiastical State are very spartan with little to no luxuries. The cells have no beds, electric lights, glass windows or heating. All prisoners have a strict daily schedule which includes mandatory prayers at 08:00, hard labour during the day and curfew at 20:00. The guards are no-nonsense. Even minor infractions like running in the halls or back-talking are met with a good caning, so the prisoners learn to behave pretty quickly.

Most importantly, violence and hazing are non-existent. You'll never hear stories of prisoners being extorted for protection money, or "dropping the soap" here. Because everyone knows the severe discipline handed out by the guards.

We have no jails or prisons in Coconut Palm Island, just rehabilitation centers (RCs), which are reserved for violent criminals who present a threat to society.

When someone arrives in an RC, they are given a warm meal, clothing (no jumpsuits or orange, prisoners can wear regular clothes), a private room (like a hotel room but a bit smaller), and a full medical and psychological examination. Residents found to be mentally ill are given appropriate medication and referred for more frequent therapy, and those with addictions are put on a small dosage of the substance they are dependent on.

In an RC, many services are available. Most notably, mental health services (psychiatrists, individual and group therapy, and medications (never forced)) are crucial in rehabilitating residents. Work programs allow residents to work for one-half of our minimum wage (full minimum wage is 10SD or 20USD per hour, so they make 5SD or 10USD per hour). Education programs are available, and residents can earn high school or college degrees. Most residents have volunteer hour requirements that they can fulfill while in an RC. In the early morning, in the afternoon break period, and after dinner, recreational services are available (sports, card games, time outdoors, etc).

RC residents are treated not like criminals, but as people whose environments, upbringings, and health conditions caused to have issues existing in society peacefully. We believe that if we treat underlying conditions and show residents a good, peaceful, honest and productive life, they will be more likely to change. As the King frequently says, "Rehabilitation does much more good than revenge."

Fostorian prisons are relatively well-maintained, but not Norwegian-nice. However, prisoners must do an amount of manual labor that corresponds with their sentence in order to be released. Very violent criminals, such as murderers and rapists, are almost always handed the death penalty, which does keep crime rates low.

My nation's jails are labor camps, composed mostly of dead people, and guarded by yet more dead people. On the bright side however, citizens don't pay taxes to maintain them!

My nation's prisons do not exist. We have death camps, where all prisoners are sent to gas chambers to die. Of course, our citizens are generally happy, healthy, and wealthy, so only the occasional political dissident, tax evader, or thief has to be sent to the camps.

Prisons in Gandoor are generally very plain. Almost entirely painted white, save for things like paintings in group areas such as the cafeteria. All prisons have two types of cell, a smaller cell, which can house up to two prisoners, and a larger cell, which can house up to 5 prisoners.

The two-person cells consist of two beds located on opposite sides of the cell; a small bathroom with sink, toilet, and shower, a small television set, and two shelves to put personal objects on, as all prisoners are permitted to have up to 5 personal items with them in the cell, provided they are not weapons, overly large, or anything that can be used to facilitate an escape or commit suicide.

The five-person cell consists of up to five beds located in a large cell; a large bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower-bathtub combo, a television set in the middle of the room (with chairs for them to sit in while watching), and a bookshelf to place personal objects. Both the two-person and five-person cells also have windows for viewing of the outside.

Outside of the cells, all prisons in Gandoor have a large cafeteria, which have a capacity of up to 500 inmates (even though the most populous prison in Gandoor has a population of only 230 inmates); an outdoor courtyard with a basketball court and a track; group areas, which will have books, a TV set (and unlike TV sets in cells, which can only receive GBN, GBN Alt, and GNN, TV sets in group areas are connected to cable and can receive 150 television stations and have access to on-demand features), and video game systems; a computer lab, where prisoners may access the Internet (there is a block on all computers usable by prisoners which prevents them from accessing social networking sites, gaming sites, pornographic sites, etc. and all computer usage is logged and prisoners may only use the computer up to 2 hours a day), and other facilities such as clinic for any health issues, a private phone call area to call any family members (calls are recorded and monitored by staff, but other prisoners may not listen in), and others.

As prisons in Gandoor are for rehabilitation more than punishment, punishments are very light and are basically just taking away privileges, both temporarily and permanently. So if you're a prisoner and you keep disobeying rules, eventually you'll find yourself without permission to leave your cell outside of going to the cafeteria, with no TV, no Internet, no video games, and no personal objects.

Well, there's no prisons in Thaideland and no judiciary, but capital punishment is a policy as well. Any sentencing is either all or nothing: death or complete pardon. The death penalty, however, is only ordered once in every 1000 cases because of how lenient laws are.
