Its funny when people write 'pop' as a popular music genre, considering what pop stands for (ik its its own genre that doesn't really have another genre to fall back on, but originally, anything popular was called pop)...

While it is difficult to tell which genre is the most popular in Zhouran, the top five (in no particular order) would be Zhouranese hip-hop (such as gangster rap, political hip-hop, dirty rap, and comedy rap), Zhouranese pop music (also referred as Z-pop, unique Zhouranese derivative of Mandopop in the dialect of Mandarin Zhouranese), Zhouranese-style electronic music (also known as Z-style electronic or Z-style music), Zhouranese rock music, and Zhouranese metal.

I believe what the kids are most into nowadays is something called "tropica heap". I've only heard a few songs I'm certain fall under that category. It seems to be influenced by Kintore's beaches, as it feels like walking along one in the dark. Most have quite an echo edited onto the vocals and the guitar/sitar. Snaps, clicks, and the loud banging of drums or bongos...Often some ominous, or holy chanting. I turned to an avid music listener for help, and he described the general as "tropica sh*t heap". Not particularly helpful, but he said it's also characterized by much of what I mentioned, as well as slower tempos and lyrics often being about friendship, or loss.

Certainly not the music I grew up on, but the times and tastes change. A more harsher hip hop take on this genre is also quite popular. That being said, most people seem to enjoy a wide range of music, and underground artists are ironically, quite big. One may tune into a radio and hear all kinds of different songs being played, with many different influences. One trend that does seem widespread is slower tempos, which is a huge contrast to what was popular a decade ago.

Music of Cartoonia

Postby Cartoonia » Fri May 11, 2018 4:17 pm

There is a variety of musical genres in Cartoonia, from folk songs from the Fairy Tail guild, to heavy metal by The Steve’s band, the ScumBucketPunks. However, the two most popular genres of music are jazz and classical music.

The classical music of the old centuries are quite popular in every town in Cartoonia. The music soothes the souls of it’s citizens and it makes them more smarter.

Jazz has got very nice beats that keep Cartoonians on there toes. Music like Benny Goodman’s “Sing, Sing, Sing”, and the 1920s “Charleston” keeps everyone on their feet.

The big bands of Cartoonia are always a nice addition to every town. Bands from the Loud Kiddington Big Band Orchestra to Chad Dickson’s Orchestra have played various jazz tunes ranging from Dixieland to Smooth jazz.

Not just big bands, but a wind ensemble is a key feature in every town in Cartoonia. They play classical music for every occasion, from election days to civilian honors, from national holidays to military reviews, each town has its own “military” band that plays the most popular sub-genre of classical music, the march.

Marches can be heard any where, from the military parade route, to the halls of the concert house, its used to rally troops, rally voters, rally organizers, and uphold the class of Cartoonia. Marches by Karl. L King, Charles E. Duble, Kenneth J. Alford, Charles Ives, John Williams, and the late, great and honorable, John Philip Sousa, have amazed citizens of Cartoonia for year. Not only American Marches, but also British, German, French, and Japanese marches are played in Cartoon bands.

The premier military band group is the “Dickson’s Own” Cartoon Imperial Marine Band, which plays throughout Cartoonia and for the Supreme Leader. It recruits Toons from each sector of Cartoonia and the most proficient Toons get to perform in the band. It carries the band tradition around the world and in Cartoonia since it’s creation in 1953.

The most popular genres among the younger generation in Rikana would be electronica, alternative, and indie. The older generation, on the other hand, prefers listening to classical music, 80s and 90s pop music, as well as anthems.

New poetry is a genre unique to Palenqua's region featuring a soloist who performs what is usually self-written lyric poetry. They may employ instruments (usually strings), but these are in a rather secondary position and are only an augmentation to performances. This is the most popular genre in Palenqua, followed by 'society-praise' or 'Palenquan pop' that usually glorifies and idealizes either current or historical society, as well as 'praises and marches', brass-based marching music typically used in propaganda.

Musical taste tends to vary widely by region, and these are of course generalizations with exceptions and outliers. The Silver Wolves, fashioning itself as a Pan-Germanic traditional society, is known for it's fondness of classical and traditional folk music, with adequate room for modern music that they deem tasteful. Among the Liberty Guard, various forms of guitar music (rock, metal, country, modern folk) of all eras are popular, with some pop and electronic on the side. Pop and electronic music, along with rap, are heavily popular in the cities, which are generally the most "up to date" on mainstream music.
