Planned City Projects in YN

Postby The Spanish Nations » Sun Apr 08, 2018 9:49 am

"A planned community, or planned city, is any community that was carefully planned from its inception and is typically constructed on previously undeveloped greenfield land. This contrasts with settlements that evolve in a more ad hoc fashion. Land use conflicts are less frequent in these communities."

Does your nation have currently any planned city? In the Spanish Monarchy, there are a bunch of Planned City projects.

El Rocío

Image

La Muy Leal y Real Ciudad El Rocío is a planned city in Honduras. It was presented by Art Deco designer Beltrán Bajas to have a city with his design. Since the city and its attractive design proven to be of interest by some major companies in Madrid and Seville, the Crown approved the project and agreed to subsidize it. However, it also made agreements that the land will be evaluated by the Ministry of Ecological Protection first before starting. The project was much larger on the residential side, but had to be cut off due to some issues. The city is 70% complete.

We don't plan whole cities. We're much too chaotic for that.

However, we are replacing the old warehouse district near Fat City's Old Harbour with a planned commercial/residential complex.

We use some degree of planning in our urban constructions, but by the very nature of our country, it contrasts from your definition. Whole planning from inception is impossible due to the fact that we separated (peacefully mind you) from a previously existing nation which already had towns and cities. So city planning projects tend to be different.

However, that isn't to say no planning occurs, just that much of our plans necessitate taking into account preexisting structures and organization.

Spain basically has more naturally-grown town than planned cities. But of course, there must be projects within nations about planned cities. Not all cities have to be planned, but the purpose of this thread is to share those cities that had been planned instead of being naturally grown, as with El Rocío. Is that hard to understand?

I don't know that it would be possible to share a whole city that we have that is entirely planned, but more to say that parts of it were planned. Deacon County, the immediate area sandwiched between our national park and the Black Sea, is mostly planned.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures to share. I have maps, but they aren't of the appropriate date, and are somewhat... messy.

EDIT:

Deacon County, a planned business and residential area, and home to the Paula Johnson Airport, was planned to support the most it could in the small area it encompassed without interfering too much with housing that already existed in the area. The planning involved heavy use of high rises and a few skyscrapers in densely packed urban areas, with a streamlined highway system. As of 2014, it is approx. 65% complete.

So, it's a settlement that evolves in an ad hoc faction, not a planned city.

The capital of Carena, Libertatem, is essentially a planned city built within the Rockies Mountains. Planning for the city went as soon as Carena's inception in 2054, however until the city's completion in 2071 the capital city rotated every 5 years. Officially contracted to architecture firm Very Good Building Company as well as a number of smaller firms, the terrain around the city was flattened and a grid road system was devised. As well as constructing government buildings, apartment towers, parks and plazas, corporate offices, and other buildings were commissioned.

Though most of Libertatem was built on former farmland, the city of Denver and surrounding communities were within the boundaries of the planned city. Much of the buildings in the Denver metropolitan area were demolished and replaced with newer buildings, however historically significant buildings were preserved.

Today in 2203, as Libertatem continues to grow, there no longer is a master plan for it's expansion. Instead the city planning office operates on a case by case basis, rather than adhering to a strict master outline, like every other incorporated community in Carena (with the exception of megalopolises, who have two city planning offices operating on a megalopolis level and a localized district level)

Viaticum, and every other underground city, are planned in advanced as they require ample imported supplies from Earth. As building a city requires extensive construction work to dig into the Martian bedrock and build a new room, there is little to no organic growth within Carenian Martian cities, or any cities on Mars.

City planning has been the standard for the past 200 years, and as such effectively all cities and towns are planned since even the most ancient multi-millennial cities have grown immensely in the recent years and their planned new sectors outnumber their more natural central sectors and old towns.

Lillamala, our capital city.

When the Federation got founded in 1981, the new government decided that a new capital city on neutral grounds would be necessary. Since after the civil wars, the Lillöer State was the main part of the new nation, the Federal Capital so far was Lysköping, which is still the state capital. The Meritocratic Council decided to place the new city right next to Lysköping. Within a couple of years, workers and planners from all constituent republics had pulled up the basic government district and a seaport. The idea was to place the main square you see in the picture above in the very center of the city - four main roads were supposed to start there and go north, south, east and west. Another main road should form a ring around the project. Also, a highway circuit was built around it.
The name "Lillamala" was chosen to sound somewhat Finnish and therefore neutral for most ethnicities in Lillorainen. Fun fact: "lilla" also means "the little/small one" in Swedish, while "mala" has the same meaning (female only) in most Slavic languages. Yeah, we don't feel ashamed for any jokes.
In 1989, the new capital and state got finished - only one part is still missing, since it was reserved for embassies. Well, we're neutral and isolationist 'n' stuff, but you never know, eh?

Other plannings are including, but not limited to, various smaller housing projects in the Rathland metropolitan area.
Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

Although almost every city in Kenmoria is planned to some degree, this is done on a fairly local level and wholely planning whole cities is very rare. Normally, a town is planned and then subsequently planned to be a city, rather than doing it in one leap.

Grand Emperor Geronimo XIII and the Department of Urban Development have planned out a city called "Fostoraiyeya" (similar to how "Germania" is to Germany) which would be a home to 50-60 million of the 2 billion Fostorians. Although the project seems far-off, and Daiychaz is already a utopia, the Grand Emperor has already begun setting aside some funds for it. Fostoraiyeya would be located south of Greater Daiychaz on the Upper Kaarel river.

Plans include a massive new Grand Imperial Palace connected to a Kamerhausze (Chamber House) which would house a new House of Nobles and House of Parliament. A 160,000-seat bowl stadium would be built as a home for Greater Fostorian national sports teams. A Grand Theater, Imperial Library, Geronimo XIII Science and Research Center, and Fostoraiyeya University (a branch of Daiychaz U) are planned, in addition to a large Imperial Army and Air Navy base on the outskirts of the city. The Grand Imperial Boulevard in Daiychaz would be continued all the way south (and through a mountain tunnel) to connect up with its counterpart in the new city, with a bullet train to make travel between the two megacities almost effortless. The Grand Imperial Intercontinental Airport would be the city's connection with the rest of the world. A huge Fostoraiyeya Plaza would be the centerpiece of the city (in-line with the Grand Imperial Palace complex).

The cost of this megacity has been estimated at upwards of 1 trillion Fostormarkes, but this could be greatly lessened by the inevitable partnerships with private businesses. The Imperial government bought the enormous plot of farmland at dirt-cheap prices, and land value could reach 1 billion F$M per block in central areas, presenting another huge opportunity to offset costs.

The location for Fostoraiyeya south of Daiychaz in the South Fostorian heartland seems to be popular, but another proposal exists with all the same features in addition to a Riviera on the eastern coastline (the southern coast was also considered, but it is already crowded between Korelia and Kourgale).

Virtually every city east of the Lily River and the Widemer Ridge is a planned community—these cities were founded by the Joplinians, who, coming from Earth, were more free to adopt from urban planning theorists in building ideal communities than in their homeland. Of these, only Fox Dole Altar and (the east side of) Unirove stayed true to their ideals, with the others seeing the congestion and waste that they intended to avoid. Neue Bayreuth, for example, obscured its initial Post-New Urbanist designs when personal vehicles became fashionable again, removing trees from its streets to (modestly) expand the roadways, and private interests in general led to so many modifications that many parts of Neue Bayreuth are typical urban jungle.

The Neighland region has far fewer, as ponies prefered to develop their cities organically. Of those cities not on the Lily River and the Widemer Ridge, only one, the suburb of Haymark (Hêmarrké)* near Reinsburgh, predates Joplinian settlement and remains populated. Meaning “school estate” in Equestrian, it was founded in GH 1124 to accommodate the influx of students from the new, more liberal admissions standards to Reinsburgh Royal College. Originally intended to be under the jurisdiction of Reinsburgh, politics between Princess Progressive Waltz and the judge of Reinsburgh at the time, Highsoil, led to Haymark becoming a separate city. With a population of 37,560 as of GH 1350, it has a radial arrangement with a town square comprising the community center and town hall, surrounded by private sector offices, stores, and restaurants, further surrounded by residential areas, with schools and other government services placed at regular intervals.

To some extent the Neighlander portion of Platzetorf (Liveryville) was also planned, as it was intended to be a new observatory to replace the one in the now-defunct city of Morningstar. The major streets correspond to the equinoxes and solstices, and government services were arranged to match major constellations.

*Not to be confused with the more populous city of Haymarket (Eip’afërrt).
