Short Description of National History: The establishment of the Confederation of the Rhine and subsequent German Confederation in the aftermath of Napoleon left increased feelings of German nationalism and a need for unity among the German people. The revolutions of 1848 and 1849 marked the beginning of a true national consciousness and permitted the establishment of the national diet in Frankfurt, though efforts to further unify and consolidate the region were complicated due to the meddling of Europe's Great Powers, in particular Prussia and Austria. The Seven Week's War that would take place in 1866 led to complete Prussian domination over all of the states within the confederation, including those in south, due to a much weaker Austria struggling in the aftermath of Kaiser Franz Joseph I's assassination in 1853 and internal strife that would lead to their empire's complete collapse. With the strength of all of "lesser" Germany behind them, Prussia soon exploited a period of weakness in neighboring France under Napoleon III to take Alsace and some parts of Lorraine. In Paris Kaiser Wilhelm I was proclaimed Emperor, with Germany being united under Prussia.
For the next several decades Germany would continue to grow in strength, eventually reaching the status as one of the strongest nations in the world. A weaker Austria and Bohemia would eventually become part of the new German Empire in the midst of domestic pressure. With the majority of central Europe firmly in Berlin's hands Germany would become Europe's strongest economic and military power, eclipsing Britain, France, and Russia. Greater efforts would be put into colonization and naval development, though Germany would have a lackluster colonial empire in comparison.
The early 20th century would be especially difficult for the German people. The World Wars and Great Depression would place a heavy toll upon the strength and unity of the state. The rise of socialism and fascism would force the state to enact sweeping reforms to ensure national unity, most prominently the creation of a parliament. Other steps including the implementation of socialist policies or programs had to be done with care to maintain the balance between progressives and traditionalists. The latter half of the 20th century saw a period of rapid economic growth and significant societal changes primarily with the younger generations. These generations were far more progressive than the previous and desired to see more modern values implemented and older ones abolished, leading to a decline in the monarchy’s power and a reform of the legislature.
Germany today exists in the aftermath of this social revolution and is a bulwark of democratic values in central Europe.
