Nation description:
The islands in which the free zones currently stand was once a private estate under the nominal authority of Meisaan or Jeongmi. Claimed by a private corporation under the good graces of the government in the immediate postwar era, the native populations of the islands became subject to repression, marginalization and sometimes straight up indentured servitude. Owing to the archipelago's land area and geography, however, the native populations managed to create a guerilla resistance movement (a la brazilian maroons) that caught the attention of radicals from the mainlands. In the participation of these foreign sympathizers, the drive to drive the corporation out of the islands mutated into a drive for the creation of a freed society, a beacon for victims of oppression all around the world. Resistance and occupation overlap, and after multiple efforts by governments and the corporation to retake the occupation, the efforts eventually halted. The occupation exists to this day, aided by international support and the diplomatic impunity through the Free Territories.
Lacking a central order, the zones adhere towards a polycentric system supported only by a semi-direct democratic chamber simply called the "assembly", a procedural only to convene at times of high urgency. communities actively experimenting with everything that may or may not work, from rogue science, local computer networks to social and economic organization. Inspired by environmentalist currents from the earlier foreign volunteers the various communities in their own way try their best to preserve what is left of the islands' ecological sanctity. Communities openly interact with each other and rarely interfere with each others' affairs. Other forms of social organization include cliques, guilds, cooperatives. Among the most prominent include the Band of Poets, a collective of artists that organize events within the communes of Samgeung and the Vana Tiruvana, an indigenous priesthood that has garnered a local following among the new settlers.
Piracy (both in the torrent and raiding contexts), contraband, illegal drugs and other shady dealings are a common thing in the zones (though the latter tends are looked upon with disgust, since most of these perpetuate the very thing the zones are against). In regards to piracy, particularly some raiding groups ported in the islands have made the zones deeply suspect in their activities. However, as long as the zones stand, the Free Zones continue to be a symbol of struggle and resistance against the state, capital and its cronies.
