So what happened today in your country? Was today a major event? Or, was it just a minor one but must be remembered anyway.
February 17th 1940: Assassination of Spenzer Kulhenberer
Spenzer Kulhenberer was appointed as the Nazi governor of German Madagascar on January 20th, 1940 as his superior (Heinrich Unber) had left to go command troops in preparation of the invasion of France. His rule was immediately brutal. He continued the policy of maintain that Madagascar should only grow cash crops and required service hours for the local population to raise to 55 hours a week from the original 35. This prompted protests across the lands of New Judaea and New Nuremburg (Hamilpore City). But, he then sent a ledger request cutting the majority of food supplies to the island except that what was needed for German soldiers. This instantly prompted famine across the Madagascar colony for Jewish settlements.
On February 17th, 1940, the 'Outsider' Jewish Resistance organized the assassination of Kulhnenberer. His car was driving from Fort Wilhelm to his Governor's mansion. For his entire reign, there had been protests, but this was still a relatively safe route. However, at 18:00 at night, his car became trapped along the Northpoint bridge by protestors. Despite threats of shooting, the group did not disperse. Then, from the croud, two machine guns fired of the car killing him, a coronal, and two low-ranking German officers.
German response was enraged after this prompting pogroms and killings of Jewish civilians all over the colony. At the same time, more Jews began joining the Jewish Resistance bands and for the first time, there was a massive rebellion. Thus February 17th, 1940 is often celebrated in Hamilpore as our independence day.
