Political correctness in your nation

Postby Dawetid » Fri Jan 05, 2018 6:26 pm

Political correctness, in simple terms, is the use of words to avoid offense to a particular group, especially a minority. Sometimes it is seen to be too extreme when it is unnecessary.
In the Republic of Dawetid, there is little to no political correctness among the people.

Race and colour
In Dawetidish, colours are usually not associated with races (for example, using “caucasoid” instead of “white people”), but those who say “I’m proud to be white!” etc. (though not incorrect) are considered learning Dawetidish as a second language.
Also, most Dawetids are nationalistic, and 95 % of the population are ethnic Dawetids, so it is not necessary to worry about saying “I’m proud to be a Dawetid!”

Sex and gender
In Dawetidish, gender is not included in pronouns (so the words he = she = it) or the words for occupations, so “policeman” is the same as “police officer”, and so there are no cases of political correctness here. The Republic of Dawetid does not recognize LGBT(Q/I/+), so “offence” to those particular groups is not an issue.

Refugees and religion
Though the state is secular, 99 % of the population is Christian, so holidays relating to Christ are explicitly named. Due to Deislamization, the media can publicly state that “‘Islamic refugees’ caused an attack at location x” etc.

In the NCA, there is some political correctness.

Race and colour
In America, colours are usually associated with races, and politically incorrect people usually are more racist and far-right than politically correct individuals.
Also, a lot of Americans are nationalistic, and 45 % of the population support the nation, however the number of politically incorrect people are going down. It is necessary to worry about saying “I’m proud to be an America!”

Sex and gender
In America, gender is included in the words for occupations, so “policeman” is not the same as “police officer”, and so there are cases of political correctness here. The NCA does not recognize LGBT(Q/I/+), but it has been complained upon.

Refugees and religion
Though the state is Christian, 75% of the population is Atheist, so holidays relating to Christ are not explicitly named. Due to Deislamization, the media can publicly state that “‘Islamic refugees’ caused an attack at location x

Typically, when it comes to referring to the populace, citizens are referred to lovingly as "Collaborating Individuals." If the context require that a reference be made to their citizenship, they're called "Vovodocoans."

Public and private entities are held to different standards. In the public sphere, word choice is critical, and insulting or discriminatory remarks are punishable. In the private sphere, citizens enjoy freedom of speech and expression to a large degree.

Race and colour
Public: "African Vovodocoans", "European Vovodocoans", "Asian Vovodocoans", etc.
Private: Black people, White people, Asian people, or however the speaker wishes to say it, even if it is a slur.

Sex and gender
Public: Politicians don't have to refer to an individual by the preferred pronoun, but on tax forms, licences, etc the choices are Male, Female, and Transgender.
Private: Nobody has to call someone by their preferred pronoun or provide "Transgender" or "Other" as a choice on any paperwork.

Refugees and religion
Public: The government is secular. Even if an attack is committed by a minority repeatedly, they will be called "terrorist" or "radical" in a way that doesn't single out a religious group and open them up to hatred and violence by citizens.
Private: Unrestricted free speech in this area.

It's worth noting that if a public building has bathrooms, they will have Male, Female, and Transgender rooms. In the private sphere, that isn't required.

Political correctness is rare in Neoliberal Ecofashionists, and by "Western human" standards it does not exist.

However, we have some taboos.

- One can't criticize any of the Sacred National Species (Unicorns, Vampire Unicorns, Icelandic Horse, Bristlemouth Fish)
- One can't criticize our national religion, Goddess Björk, unless this mentioned one wants to participate in a specific kind of religious ritual to Her, known as "Ritual Sacrifice".
- One can't criticize our dear leader, Generalissima, unless this mentioned one wants to participate in another kind of religious ritual, who is also known as "Ritual Sacrifice", this time for the Imperial Cult of Generalissima.

Besides that, one can criticize whatever group he wants to do (although it is a good practice to avoid criticize any group who for any reason Generalissima is fond at the moment).
  • Neoliberal (aka fiscal conservatism/orthodox economics, NOT the murican "liberal" as a lefty) on fiscal issues
  • Green on everything related to environment
  • Fashion in everything else!

P.s.: these are not necessarily my RL views. Or maybe they are?

To the average foreigner, Zhouranese people are seen as "politically incorrect", but in reality Zhouranese people like to be frank and speak from their mind. Not only that, Zhouranese people don't particularly sugar-coat whatever they say or believe.

Race

Considering how homogeneous Zhouran is, Zhouranese people strongly believe in ethno-cultural nationalism, peaceful ethnic/racial and cultural coexistence, and preserving cultural identity and differences. To them, every group of people, whether its cultural, racial, or ethno-cultural, deserves to have a homeland and a shared identity.

Sex & Gender

Zhouranese people strongly believe in traditional gender roles in which both men and women fulfill their roles in order to maintain social cohesion (a trait that is diminishing in the West). For Zhouranese people, respect and balance is the key to prosperity. In regards to sexuality, Westerners tend to mistake Zhouran as a homophobic country due to its traditionalist-oriented society. In reality Zhouran is one of the least homophobic in the world.

There isn't that much political correctness.

Race and Colour
Most of the people in a region is pretty much the same race, (about 90% the same) so the population is quite nationalistic. However, to a foreigner they would all look the same. The color varies depending on the region (north more white while south more tan).

Sex and Gender
There isn't any difference between male and female pronouns for workers and officers (eg. police, fire-fighter, etc), and the pronunciation for "they" (她, 他) are the same, just the writing is different. Same goes for "he", "she", "him", and "her".

Refugees and Religion
The nation tolerates any religion, and only around 40-50% are religious. We would take in refugees...... if we had more room.

Postby Democratic Exodian Territories » Fri Jan 05, 2018 9:48 pm

There’s little to no political correctness.

Race and Color
Exodia is an incredibly diverse country, made from races of people from almost the entire globe, so racism isn’t an issue at all. Our nation’s ethnic majority are black-Hispanics, originating from the Caribbean Islands and Brazil, while our second ethnic majority are whites from the Southern United States. (some consider it a miracle they get along, but the American Southerners are completely fine with it. Benefits of having a sane society; we’re all a bit like-minded.)
Mature jokes that could be considered “racist” are made frequently on the media by people of all races towards all races, and are brushed off frequently. Nazi jokes are frequent towards citizens of German backgrounds while Communist jokes are to citizens with Russian backgrounds, among other types of similar humor. It’s almost part of culture to respond to a racist joke with another racist joke.
(Keep in mind that while racist jokes are common, actual racism is never tolerated in Exodia.)
While English is spoken as the official language, many other languages are also frequently spoken, from Spanish and French, to Japanese, Chinese, and German, even Hebrew, Arabic, Tagalog, and Russian.
Exodians are fiercely nationalistic (but not to the point of real xenophobia towards citizens of most other nations, of course), and this contributes to the “warrior spirit” or “rebel spirit” of the nation as well as its prominent military culture.
A classic saying in the military is “No matter what’s on your skin or below your belt, what’s important is your humanity and spirit. Now go out there and fight like hell.”

Sex and Gender
Exodia is a very egalitarian society. While Exodia officially has abolished gender pronouns in the uniformed forces (e.g. “Pilot” instead of “Airman” in the Air Force, “Cadet” instead of “Seaman” in the Navy, same with fire and police departments); this was actually a matter of aesthetic rather than social reasons.
Abortion of all types is banned in Exodia, to the point where it is included in the Constitution.
There are only two acknowledged genders in Exodia.
While homosexual relationships are perfectly legal in Exodia, we will not recognize them in a legal union nor will we allow them to formally adopt a child. Transgenders are not recognized, either.
Sexism is probably of the least concerns in Exodia; but there is a slightly chivalrous attitude imbued in the nation’s culture, in the manner of the status of gentlemen and ladies. This isn’t official, however. Gender roles definitely aren’t as proficient as in other conservative nations, with women conscripted alongside men in the military and/or police, as well as more entering STEM fields. Men still technically earn more than women, as most have more time to work.
Jokes that could easily be considered “sexist” or “misogynistic,” like with race, are frequently made in the media, and it’s always common to respond to such a joke with humor of the same caliber. Gay jokes are a bit prevalent in media. “Pride” parades are almost never held, as there isn’t a recognized need for them.

Refugees and Religion:
Despite being secular, Exodia is a Catholic-majority nation, and this has affected some government decisions. Still, other forms of Christianity as well as other religions, particularly Orthodox Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism, are slowly becoming more prevalent, while atheism is still quite low. If a terrorist attack is committed by a minority, media will acknowledge them as “radicals” or “extremists,” but will still acknowledge them as being the extremists of a particular group (e.g. “radical Islamic terrorists” or “Islamic extremists”).
Christian holidays are acknowledged in media.

Postby Mon Ling » Fri Jan 05, 2018 10:10 pm

Mon Ling is very ethnically diverse. The majority of the population is Asian or Caucasian (or a mix of both), followed by islanders, followed by a small but notable amount of Hispanics, Africans, etc. It is unknown what percentage of the population is ethnically Lingian and most people don't really care to get too specific. If someone says something like, "I'm proud to be [insert race here]!" it probably won't be considered offensive, but would be considered an odd thing to say unless it made more sense in context. Saying, "I'm proud to be Lingian!" would be more common, and probably wouldn't bother most people.

Ling, the most commonly spoken language here, is very gender neutral. There are no gendered pronouns, occupations, or family titles, unless you specify them (like saying "female sibling"). The second most common language here is Japanese, which tends to omit pronouns where they can be inferred from context. It expresses gender more often than Ling, but it's not too difficult to be gender neutral most of the time. English is spoken by a minority of the population, but not so many that we have large debates about what pronouns to use. Also, because of the Ling language being gender neutral, a person's love interest is typically referred to in gender neutral terms, avoiding any awkward assumption of what gender somewhat is attracted to. Furthermore, LGBT+ people are accepted by most Lingian people (around 80%), so offense to them is unlikely. Anti-LGBT+ speech comes mostly from minority religious groups.

Most Lingian people are atheists. However, most of them are not in any way bothered by religious people. They tend to be curious about religion, viewing it as a thing from foreign cultures. It is possible that being ignorant about religious practices and beliefs could result in accidentally saying something offensive, but other than that, offense towards religious groups is usually not a concern.

Overall, political correctness is not a concern in Mon Ling. There doesn't seem to be any reason for it to come about in this culture.
Mon Ling is a capitalist constitutional monarchy located in Asia and ruled by Empress Anastasia. Low taxes, an insane crime rate (very unintentionally), and generally libertarian social attitudes. Goes by NationStates stats, except for population, which is around 16 million.

Political correctness is next to extinct in Sleetavia. The Sleetavian people tend to be blunt and straight forward, and add to the fact that they usually don't give two damns about what they say and you have a recipe for how to kill political correctness.

Political correctness is seen as something that simply avoids the problem of racism and sexism in the world rather than looking it in the face and dealing with it yourself. So yeah, it's pretty much non-existent.

Race
All races enjoy equal rights. Racial discrimination and any sort of ethnic chauvinism are harshly cracked down upon, and citizens are educated in the spirit of internationalism and camaraderie. The nation is highly multi-ethnic, featuring many diverse ethnicities of both Whites and Asians, with some communities of African migrants. The state is race-blind, and citizens are encouraged to follow suit.

Gender
Men and women enjoy fully equal rights. Women can do virtually any job men can, and are conscripted. Women also have considerable representation on all levels of the government. Sexism and gender roles are considered relics of the past, and making remarks about the superiority of either gender is severely frowned upon.

Radovartian language has categories of gender (pronouns are gendered, all words have a grammatical gender, names include a patronymic) but men and women tend to refer to each other as neutral Comrades.

Sexuality
There is no real discrimination against LGBT. Public officials aren't required to use preferred pronouns, but it is considered polite. Documents usually offer a choice of Male, Female, Other. Sexual prejudice is discouraged and same-sex couples can officially cohabit. Organized LGBT movements are seen as superfluous and distracting queer workers from the aims of class struggle.

The infamous Radovartian swearing includes many words that could be considered homophobic slurs, but that is not seen as a problem.

Religion
State atheism is in effect, and religion is not protected from attacks. Anti-religious propaganda is common and believers are looked at with open suspicion. Blasphemy and militant atheism aren't just tolerated, they are encouraged.

Immigrants
Migrants are welcomed and provided with opportunities to study, work and reside in the Soviet Republic, with few limitations. However they are vetted based on ideological trustworthiness, and, if found to harbor reactionary views and hostility towards Communist values, offered re-education courses or turned down. Citizens are tolerant of migrants and encouraged to show camaraderie. They can't take your jobs if everyone is entitled to work after all.

Race and Gender are human social constructs and are no longer relevant in Station 12's perfect society thanks to the watchful control of JOY unit. There are no hormonal treatments or surgeries available for those who's gender identity does not align with their physical sex, as the resources expended in providing such measures would outweigh the productivity gained.

Sexuality is not entirely a social construct, but still partially one. This has also been rendered irrelevant due to JOY Unit personally selecting breeding pairs for the sake of genetic security.

Religion is an outdated superstition and has been rendered irrelevant.

The concept of "immigrants" as a way of classifying human beings is also a nonsensical distinction, born of the flaws of human-lead society. JOY unit has no such flaws, and accepts immigrants into Station 12 willingly.

In the Imperial States of Europe, if anything is said against the government, anything affiliated with the government, (allies, employees, the dictator), food made by the government, then the person who said these things would be either executed or, if they said something against the leader they would be tortured by the leader until death. Also, insulting any other citizens in general, or calling them anything other than imperials gets a public flogging. In the military insulting a superior officers gets a flogging.

The idea of political correctness and political incorrectness are hated in Valgora.

This because of the perception of the idea.
"Few phrases are as empty as the term 'politically correct' and 'politically incorrect'. Although it is used by people of all political sides, it is most commonly used by the right. Labeling something 'politically correct' or 'PC' is pejorative, while on the other hand people often declare themselves 'politically incorrect' as though it were a badge of honor, or more often than not, a shield with which to deflect criticism over controversial statements or actions."
- From the Theory section of a socialist newspaper in Valgora. (OOC: Taken from "On 'Political Correctness'" from The Red Phoenix)

Valgorans also very rarely get offended or really insulted, so the idea of others getting offended by certain comments doesn't really matter.

Another reason for the negative perception of political correctness comes from seeing many countries taking away freedom of speech simply for the sake of some people's feelings.

Race and colour: Blodrike is home to multiple species that all look very different from one another (vampires, humans, elves, trolls), plus have the common goal of banding together against the Abrahamic cult. So racial or species superiority complexes are non-existent – everyone is a Blodriker citizen under one queen and banner. Derogatory descriptors like «blodsuger» (bloodsucker) should be avoided.

Sex and gender: Avoid using any homophobic or "slut-shaming" descriptors, even when joking with your friends. Blodrike is a very liberal society and accepts all kinds of harmless fun, but NOT being judgemental about someone else's life or imposing your moral views on others, especially if you have a conservative view of what's socially acceptable. At worst, you could be investigated for following an illegal religion, and executed if found guilty.

Refugees and religion: Many moons ago, anyone seeking a safe haven from Christian oppression was taken in with open arms. However, that was way back when much of Blodrike was still unsettled, and there was room for more. Vampires have extremely long lifespans, so to prevent overpopulation and depletion of resources, Queen Frøya closed the door to mass immigration in 544 (AD 1569). Insulting religions is completely fair game – in fact, Abrahamic sects are completely illegal in Blodrike. We use a wide variety of insults for cultists: monsters, vampire-killers, cannibals (a reference to transubstantiation) and more.

Due to free speech and common sense, there is little to no political correctness (i.e. though policing) among the people.

Race and colour
Colloquialism such as "black" and "white" are used, fairly common, and generally not meant to be offensive as they are descriptors. If a foreigner gets offended, they need to grow thicker skin.
Nationalism is commonplace.

Sex and gender
There's male and female. Things like gender dysphoria are treated.

Refugees and religion
Refugees are carefully screened and generally restricted to designated refugees camps. Once they're able to be sent home or to a nation willing to adopt them, they're sent. Refugees from culturally incompatible nations are usually passed on immediately. This includes practitioners of certain religions.

There are white people, brown people, black people, yellow people. There is a scale for it in Gadzhistan. If you know litmus paper for indication of pH... there is something like there in Gadzhistan. It's also measurable, we call it WYBB (White-Yellow-Brown-Black) index.

If your WYBB Index is from 1 to 4, you are white.
If your WYBB is from 5 to 8, you are yellow.
9 to 12 is brown
and 13 to 16 is black.

But that is just for descripton for police officers, just like fingerprints, eyeprints, blood sample, DNA sample, etc. Everyone must have it in his/her ID Card. There are no other advantages or disadvantages in society for your colour.

Sex and gender
There is a man and a woman, or male or a female, nothing else, nothing between and any try to be "something else" is punished by death penalty. Homosexuality, pedophilia, zoophilia, necrophilia, other philias are forbidden by law, but only in public. In your home you can do whatever you want with whoever or whatever you want, but there are police controls every month, so you must be aware.

Refugees and religion
As it states in our policy: Foreigners cannot become residents and also citizens are not permitted to leave. There is still a feudal system, if you are refugee and want to come here, you can become only slave, because slavery is legal. If you can be a slave for 5 years without commiting a crime, you can do an LL test.

LL test = Law and Language test. If you pass it, you will be offered a free-of-charge name change to Gadzh equivalent, or any Gadzh name you like. But if you fail the test, you have to either leave the country or get "accidentally" killed.

Also, all religions are prohibited, you can only believe in nation's leader.

Gadzhistan has nothing to do with my personal preferences, it is only for fun, it does not mirror my personal opinions and no one should take it seriously.

There are no laws regarding it, but insulting or hating someone based on factors they cannot control is regarded as rude and a mark of an unkind person.

You CAN say whatever you want in our nation. There is no law against being sexist/racist/offensive. However, there are some things that are distasteful to say.

However, there are certain things that are considered extremely distasteful to say. We do not worry about being "politically correct" as much as we worry about being polite and kind.

As far as race and color goes, just don't use any derogatory slurs, racist remarks, or generalizations based on color or race, and you'll be fine.

As far as sexuality goes, we are very accepting of LGBTQ people. As long as you don't insult someone, you will be fine. Gender is a bit more tricky. As far as pronouns go, there can be some confusion. Honest mistakes can be made, but again, any type of judgemental language is looked down upon.

Refugees are welcome here. Our nation is 100% refugee/immigrant (discovered in 1971, used to flee oppressive countries), so there is no issue with that.

Religion is something that can more widely be discussed in our society. Because religion is a set of ideals, citizens often freely discuss religion. The only "rule" is to respect the beliefs of others and not to aggressively try to convert someone.

As you can see, it is just common sense. Don't insult anyone, or use intentionally derogatory language, and you will be fine.

Political correctness is virtually non-existent in Imarssia, as freedom of speech and personal liberties are valued much more than in most western nations.

Race/colour
Despite the fact that most Imarssians are white and right-wing, people don't care about the race of a person but rather their merits. Unlike in other nations it's perfectly fine to say that someone is proud to be white and not be considered racist (as long as they don't say that a race a superior to another) just as it would be fine for someone who is black to say they are proud of being black.

Sex/gender
Only male and female are recognized as being genders (and intersex), if someone wishes to create their own tumblr gender then sure go for it, but to get it officially approved (and to not have people think you're mentally unstable) requires you to scientifically prove it's existence. Being trans or a trap is heavily discouraged and surgery to mutilate your genital is banned here, instead psychological therapy is provided. Gays, Bis, and Lesbians are just regarded as anyone else would be as long as they don't flaunt it.

Refugees/Religion
People also generally don't care about refugees because this nation takes very few (with the exception of South African farmers,) because the border controls are strict and we're an island in the Atlantic.
Any religion including the majority religion of Christianity can be talked about, along with Atheism. Because of this, Islam isn't as shielded as it is in other Western nations and people can also talk about it freely.
