How do you create your maps?

I see nations with professional-looking maps all the time. I have one, but it was created using Microsoft Paint and looks very minimalistic and only shows approximate divisions of the highest-level administrative division, or in my case, the Province, and has no detail on terrain or other borders (except for inter-provincial borders).

So I’m wondering, is there a software that the NS community uses or is it purely artistic skills?

It's all about the dominon of MS paint in my case, if your nation is based on the real world you can use some basemap from deviantart or some forum. I'm going to leave a thread with some basemaps here as example

I like using gimp, which I use for all my flags, maps, emblems and it works really well. Nonetheless, I can also recommend paint.net, which, as I recall, I liked quite a bit more than MS paint.

Edit for elaboration: For instance I created my map simply by doodling around with pencil and paper for a bit. Once I had my rough sketch I scanned it and painted it using Gimp. It has changed a few times, gotten larger smaller etc. but I found that this way works really well to create an organic and unique nation.

Since mine is a world map, I create the territories using this: https://mapchart.net/.

As for the main map in my Wiki factbook, I got the blank map from actual Wikipedia and used Photoshop.

I use MS Paint to create the body, structure and general look of the map and use Gimp to clean it up and refurbish the design a little bit'.

Since I edit already existing maps, I typically use paint.net to edit it to my liking.
Actually, come to think of it, I use paint.net to do EVERYTHING image related, cause I have no idea how to use photoshop.

I made mine in GIMP, but all I really did was put a semi-transparent blob of color over an existing map of the "Local Bubble".
