How do you celebrate Christmas in your nation?

Postby Vallermoore » Wed Dec 06, 2017 10:29 am

From 1st December onwards until Christmas Eve, the shops decorate for Christmas and a lot of spending goes on.

Christmas Eve is a day where every shop shuts at 5:00PM by law. The people and sapient ponies have decorated their homes with nice things and Christmas trees. Father Christmas comes and somehow by magic fills the stockings of all but the worst behaved Vallermooreians who just get coal in theirs.

On Christmas Day morning, all over Vallermoore presents are opened of all kinds. Swords and firearms are quite common presents along with every kind of book, toy and clothes. There is Christmas TV and the only places open are police stations, fire stations, hospitals, power stations, and homeless shelters. Later in the day people feast. Some eat roast duck, roast turkey or roast chicken, others eat roast Silverspider, and sapient ponies who don't eat meat have fine fruits and cakes and breads. Then Christmas pudding often with flaming brandy is eaten.

The pony festival of Hearthswarming is slowly dying out along with Ponyism. Also a Megatronist version of Christmas is taking hold where the presents rather then being given are *sold* at a price much lower then it cost when they were brought in the shops, normally a token 1 Chingching for something that cost so much more then that.

Boxing Day is a national holiday for everyone to enjoy their gifts.

After that people go back to work until the night of New Year's Eve when at midnight they jump off a chair, kiss and cuddle, sing Auld Lang Syne, and let off or watch fireworks. New Year's Day is a holiday so people can sleep off their hangovers. Then things go back to normal and on the 6th of January the Christmas decorations are taken down and the Christmas trees thrown out or sawn up and burned.

Vyzhvans are poorly educated in topic such as western societal events such as Christmas, and they rarely, if ever, practise them.

I haven't ironed out the specifics due to time, but Christmas is not a public holiday in the whole of Minoa (the west is mostly Christian, but the east is mostly Muslim): instead the nearest statewide public holidays are on 21 and 31 December (Winter Solstice and Gregorian New Year’s Eve), with most regions in West Minoa (as well as Istanbul) having 25 December as a regional public holiday.

Minoan Christmas is not as conservative as the UK: apart from engineering works, many transport services in the west run to a Sunday schedule during the holidays. Shops also open to a Sunday schedule, which is convenient for getting an odd ingredient or two, or some extra sweets, at the last minute.

At a public level, celebrating Christmas was not promoted.

At a private level, many do not celebrate it due to not being religious. However, religious people who do celebrate Christmas have a simple feast, and do prayers. Many believers on Christmas Day did not work.

As Gandoor is only slightly over 1% Christian, Christmas is celebrated entirely as a secular holiday here. Due to the strict separation of church and state in our nation, it is not an officially recognized holiday, although 25 December is one of the ten generic Public Holidays in our nation.

Actual Christmas celebrations are fairly basic, most people just spend the day with friends and family, although a not insignificant percentage of the 3 million Gandoorese Christians attend Christmas services at their local church.

In recent decades, the giving of presents has generally been reserved only for small children, with the gifting of money to other people to buy what they want having grown in popularity, as it's considered more polite to give someone the ability to buy what they want rather than presuming what they want.

In the evening, Christmas dinner is eaten, traditionally around 8.00. Gandoorese Christmas dinner usually consists of a roasted ham (ham, it should be stated, isn't commonly eaten in Gandoor outside of the holiday season) accompanied by sweetcorn and brown rice. Sides will include roasted potato slices, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage soup. Christmas dessert is almost always 'Christmas bread', which is a sweet bread, only sold during the holidays, that is topped with cream cheese and ground cinnamon. Those of legal drinking age (16) will traditionally drink wine with their meal and younger family members or friends will drink 'American sweet', which is a sweetened rice milk

Unlike other oriental nations that only celebrate Christmas for materialistic corporate consumerism, Christmas in Zhouran is celebrated the way it traditionally is. Interestingly, Zhouran isn't a Christian nation, rather it's a secular nation, with 34% of the population being adherents to the indigenous religion called the Spiritual Mandate, 31% being members of the Zhouranese Orthodox Church, 28% being non-religious, and 7% being adherents to other religions. As a result, Zhouran is indeed a secular-but-religious nation and because of this Christmas is celebrated in the traditional way, regardless if someone is Orthodox Christian, a follower of the Spiritual Mandate, or an atheist.

People in Zhouran like to celebrate Christmas for as long as possible, and as a result the nation has one of the world's longest Christmas season. Christmas season in Zhouran is treated as an important time for families to come and meet together as one and reunite. Christmas in Zhouran is one of the most colorful in Asia and the whole world, with firework shows being very popular.

Nativity scenes are very popular in Zhouran. They are often very large, with the figures being life size. For Zhouranese Orthodox Christians, sometimes a whole room in a house can be used for the nativity scenes. The figures are often made of clay. As well as the normal figures of the Mary, Joseph, Jesus, the Shepherds and Three Kings, there are often lots of other figures of different people and different animals. The figures can be bought from markets in towns and cities all over Zhouran. The baby Jesus is normally added to the scene during the evening of Christmas Eve. The Three Kings are added at Epiphany.

Hospitality is very important for all Zhouranese people, with families and any friends they've invited having a meal together. Tables are covered with fruits and nuts, chocolates, cookies and biscuits, various types of Zhouranese breads, salads and various Zhouranese main meals such as Zhouranese soft rice with barbecued and marinated lamb, chicken or beef with nuts and various spices. Some Zhouranese Orthodox Christians don't eat any meat or fish during the Christmas Eve meal/feast.

For Zhouranese Orthodox Christian families, prayers might be said after the meal and the family then goes to the midnight Church services. They often don't wash the dishes until they get home from Church - sometimes not until 4.00am or 5.00am.

In suburban areas, children will go carol singing round the homes of friends and family and to wish people a happy new year. They are normally rewarded with cookies, sweets and money.

Christmas Eve is very important in Zhouran. Many people stay awake all night into Christmas day.

Christmas is generally celebrated within the home and is meant to be a quiet affair involving numerous family members from both parents. It is a time of reflection and gift-giving but in recent times has of course been comercialised resulting in a trend of it becoming a festival more about the gifts than the time with family.

Christmas is traditionally celebrated by Versilian Christians, whom make up about 0.4% of the population.
The rest of the population celebrate the consumerist side of it, alongside a Kremvhist adaption Of Christmas.
This version was first created to diminish Christian influence in the country, and has since become a popular holiday of familial and sexual love, gift-giving and worship of the winter solstice.

Two distinct celebrations occur around that time. One being Kristifest (festivities of Christ, often simply translated as Christmas) and the other being Jul (Yule). The former is celebrated in the christian fylker in Vestøy and Taranger, while the latter is celebrated in the predominantly heathen fylker in Nordbreheim and Fjordland. The native faith in Alfheim does not have a religious celebration around 24-25th of December.

The western christian celebration starts on the 1st of December. Traditionally, people make or purchase advent calendars to count down the days to the 24th of December. Presents are exchanged on the 3rd sunday of advent, rather than on christmas eve or christmas day, along with eating a traditional meal of porridge. On christmas eve, families get together to feast, with different types of fish and whale, along with bread and wine, being the traditional dish, although in the modern day this varies significantly. Western fundamentalists hold that eating meat on christmas eve or christmas day is blasphemous. On christmas day, christmas mass is held.

Jul is among the most important religious holidays of the old faith pagans of Breheim. The celebrations begin at the winter solstice, usually the 21st or 22nd of december, with a traditional goat race in the hov, followed by a blot in honour of the deity Tor. Three days later, on either the 24th or the 25th of December, eastern and northern pagans gather again for the greatest blot during the celebrations, once again in honour of the deity Tor. After the blot, which in most areas last from sunrise until sundown (except in the far north, where it lasts some four hours), families return home to partake in a traditional feast (the traditional dishes being goat or pork) before exchanging gifts. Six days after the solstice, children are encouraged to partake in the julebukk, where they dress up as creatures of lore, led by the yule ram, the gode or gydje of the community dressed up in ramskin and donning a ram's skull, walking door to door to gather tributes of food or drink. The children are typically given sweets, but the food and drink is used to end the yule celebrations nine days after the solstice, with a large feast and blot to honour the ancestors.

As Amrasia is a multicultural nation, Christmas is also celebrated, but in a common way.
Christmas is a national holiday, and every stores (like malls, street shops, etc) usually place a small Christmas tree near the entrance, and put Christmas decorations inside the store.
Christmas decorations are put on the street lamps by the government, and as the street lamps has a small speakers on them, the government plays 'jingle bells' for days.
Roads where churches are located at--are closed from 8:00 PM to the end of Christmas.
The people often celebrate Christmas by having a big feast with their families or friends. Most of the people eat Soori, a roasted duck served with rice and red bean paste, along with seaweed soup and vegetable fritters. Then finish the feast by eating rice cakes, often served with brown sugar caramel sauce. Some adults drink Ju, a traditional liquour.

The Cult of the Dead God is illegal in the Empire and its adherents are ruthlessly persecuted and hunted down to be removed from our noble society, lest the contagion spread. The holy days of the profane, heathen cult are excellent times for pogroms to be declared. We treat other followers of the Dead God similarly.

Christmas is not a public holiday in Radiatia, however they are aware of it being big internationally - indeed most workers and especially managers/shareholders "celebrate" during Christmas because export orders go through the roof, delivering them large profits (which are often translated into bonuses for workers).

This old article from 2012 describes Christmas in Radiatia well.

Christmas is still celebrated in some regions of the Confederacy, but most of the traditions have been largely altered over the millennia (Not intentionally, simply just the passage of many years).

One place where it is still celebrated is in Sol System.

On Christmas, the Confederate Council go to Earth from Luna and participate in a major December holiday that lasts for about two weeks. It's not really Christmas (More like a fusion of current and future winter holidays, including Christmas), but many aspects of it are similar.

In Arbarba, Christmas is a rather minor holiday, as Christians make up a fairly small portion of the population. It is usually involves a family getting together and giving everyone a single gift, usually something handmade. They then relax (usually outside, winter is quite warm in much of the country) until the evening, at which point they will travel to the nearest church, where a Christmas service is held, followed by the people who attended the service cooking a large feast they share with anyone who wanders by. The celebrations usually end around midnight, when everyone heads home to sleep.

TS also observes the Advent, an ancient Church ritual performed by most Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant churches, on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Day.

On December 1, the calendars are changed.

On December 21, the season changes and people start to remember Christmas happens soon. In a major panic, people start to decorate. The stores in Hopkins and Alexander's Valley are usually the first people to notice it's Christmas, when they put up pictures of Santa Claus on their walls and wish their wooden stores built in the 1830s, decades before the Civil War had insulation.

The people fare off a little better. Industry closes for about a week, before re-starting on the Monday after Christmas. If you don't celebrate Christmas, then it's at least a nice little vacation from the pressure of life.

On Christmas Day, the people who participate give presents and cook a meal, and the children go down the street to beat up the Jewish kid.
