Bible Belts in YN

Postby Iclande » Fri Nov 17, 2017 12:23 pm

Does your nation have a Bible Belt? An area of high religious observance that clings to traditional values and social conservativism.

Iclande is an island nation to the north-west of Scandinavia that has religiously been dominated by Calvinism since the Reformation in the 16th century. Iclande remains a relatively conservative nation, with an Official State Church (the Reformed Church of Iclande) and relatively high levels of church attendance compared to most of western Europe. However even in this conservative and religious nation there is a stretch of rural territory that is sufficiently devout to be regarded as the "Bible Belt" by the rest of the nation.

In the rural districts to the east of the capital Tüsa from Gammelhavn to Jarvenssa traditional churches dominate. Through the 18th to 20th centuries (some argue that we're in the midst of yet another evangelical awakening) a series of religious rivals and schisms have produced a wide range of Reformed Churches outside of the official state church, including but not limited to the Independent Reformed Church, the Reconstituted Reformed Church and the Spiritual Calvinist Church. The local Church Elders dominate their flocks and one almost steps back in time

Image

These hard line fundamentalist churches even have their own political parties. At every general election rural areas of the north and west are shaded brown as the Reformed Social Party gains the most votes. The Reformed Social Party is an oddity in western Europe, a religious right political party that dominates certain districts. On the island of Urk the RSP receive over 60% of the vote in rural areas and even 40% of the vote in the town of Urk where they govern in coalition with conservative parties.

Image

Tourism is one of the largest industries in Iclande, even in the Bible Belt. Skiing in the winter, whale watching off the coast and pristine countryside attract tourists for all over the world. However, check in advance, because in the Bible Belt you won't find shops open on Sundays and outside of the largest towns there are no bars, pubs or off-licenses selling alcohol. And it is easy to tell the locals from the tourists, because the locals often look like they have stepped out of history books, complete with peasant costumes and wooden clogs!

Image

The buckle of the belt in Urk.

Along with tourism, Iclande has thriving fishing, beef and dairy sectors, bringing wealth to the Bible Belt. This allows the region to cope with its large families as most adults in religious families marry young and have lots of children. However there are many issues that are not hard to find. Drug abuse and alcoholism affect even these communities and many youngster are eager to migrate to the cities.

Image

There are lots of these in the Bible Belt.

The Bible Belt is a colourful addition to Iclandic society and makes other conservative but non-religious areas of Iclande look quite liberal by comparison.

So enough if Iclande, are there any extremely devout areas of your nation? Do you have Bible or Quran Belts?

The closest area in the CTM to a "Bible belt", with 91% of the nation's population being atheist, is the Kauro state in the central CTM next to the southern border. It is the only state with under 50% of the population being atheist (although this doesn't have that much influence on national atheism rates as it is by quite a large margin the least populated) and has relatively high levels of religious conservatism, however it is mainly known for its high levels of opposition to human-level AI and transhumanism. Due to political divisions between it and the rest of the nation (which by RL Western standards is highly liberal), a secessionist referendum for the region is planned for summer 2088 (although if they secede, as is very likely, the CTM will retain a military base in the region to guard against anti-transhumanist terrorism and will enact measures to prevent a rise of far-right nationalism in the region)

The western City States of Isentran, especially Sara, Antium, and Magnen, are largely rural areas with significant Catholic populations. Additionally, there are also a fair number of Protestant and Reformed churches. This area is very socially conservative, and forms the traditional heartland of the right-wing Nationalist Party. Although Isentran has a rather large Muslim population, most of them choose to live outside the large western City States.

Despite appearances, Isentran's "Bible Belt" is a very pleasant place to visit. Most of the people are very welcoming, even to atheists and Muslims. You just want to avoid talking about politics around them.

Terricon has a moderate, but evenly distributed religious population across the country. The only discernible religious border would be between the country's north (Orenberg, Russia IRL) and south (Aktobe, Kazahkstan). The predominate faiths of the population that is religious in these two regions are Eastern Orthodox and Sunni Islam respectively.

Excluding the city of Riga, the provinces of Vidzeme, Livonia and Kurzeme are the most conservative and have the largest Christian populations in the Baltic State. Around 91% of Vidzeme is Christian, and in Kurzeme just under 85% are Christian.

The province of Peeterhoek in the southeast of the nation is by far the most religious and conservative area in the nation. The area maintains a large Dutch Protestant (formerly Dutch Reformed) population, and was the only province where gay marriage was not legal before it was made federally legal in 2004.

Rather than a "Bible Belt", Alizeria has an area that could better be described as the "Secular Belt", with the vast majority of the population being fairly if not openly religious.

Central Everton and Central Krostuk both have the highest concentrations of non-religious people, as do most areas near universities, while Southern Krostruk has a very large Jewish community who obviously don't respond well to hardcore Christian rhetoric from politicians.

Officially, 91 per cent of Nortans are members or in communion with the state Church of Nortend. The rest are either Catholic (4·8 per cent), Orthodox (0·96 per cent), Jewish (3 per cent) or faithless (1 per cent). The strongest areas of Christianity, or the most adherent regions, would likely be the Dioceses of Bexeness, Chepingstow, Bailmorden and Staithways, encompassing the counties of Hormelon, Crichloy, Narland, part of Almeshire, Eamshire, part of Gortland, Barard, past of Merst, Leaton, part of Corrishire and Haxoshire, and Mure, Cardenbridge and County Allells. with the four highest weekly church attendance in the country, with between 86 and 88 per cent of households indicating that they attended church the previous two weeks. They also have the highest percentage of Christians, at 96 per cent of the population.

The Monavian Empire is generally a very religious country and most of its territory is predominantly Orthodox (~54%) or Catholic (~21%). Several provinces on the east coast are majority Muslim because they were colonized by Islamic settlers in the eleventh and twelfth centuries before being conquered by the Monavians thereafter. The only areas that can be described as “Bible Belts” in the real-life sense are the northwestern and southwestern provinces that were originally colonized by Protestant immigrants after 1600 and have since taken in high numbers of immigrants. Protestants who live elsewhere in the Imperial Federation tend to congregate in small towns and medium-density cities, though small numbers of Amish persons have established rural presences over the last century or so.

Rural areas tend to be more religious than urban areas. In the cities, people are busy and religion doesn't seem relevant to their lives, but many people in rural parts of Mon Ling report praying more often and thinking about spiritual matters.

In general, I would suppose that the northwestern part of Mon Ling is the most religious. There are many private religious schools as well as places of worship there.
Mon Ling is a capitalist constitutional monarchy located in Asia and ruled by Empress Anastasia. Low taxes, an insane crime rate (very unintentionally), and generally libertarian social attitudes. Goes by NationStates stats, except for population, which is around 16 million.

One could practically say that the entire country is a "Bible belt." Although atheism and even revived Pagan religions are gaining traction in Capile, over 90% of the population is Christian, and their values are overwhelmingly conservative and fundamentalist.

Kazakstotzka protects religious freedoms as long as they don't harm the strength and growth of the state. Surrounded by zealous atheist neighbors, we naturally became a safe haven for those persecuted.
The entire economy is state planned. Subsidies are given to encourage planning nation-wide architecture. With population reaching its peak, every building needs a purpose. Temples serve no purpose in the growth or sustainability of the state, so none are built. Massive projects rivaling great world wonders tend to still hold an international attraction to the nation regardless.

In a recent poll, 82.4% of Kazakstotzkans claim to be agnostic regardless of their religious beliefs. 17.5% are nihilist, and the remaining 0.1% are convinced their beliefs are provable. There is a 0.1% margin of error.
Anti-discrimination laws prevent the state from recording a citizen's personal civil practices, so it is unknown whether or not we have areas or ghettos of "Bible Belts" but it can be observed that Hasidic Jews and Orthodox Christians congregate regularly where they can, usually at public parks.

The Sidh equivalent to Bible Belt would probably be the core worlds, the oldest and most heavily-urbanized Imperial planets. Somewhat contrary to the general trend of cosmopolitan and liberal attitudes found in major urban areas of the human realms, Sidh core-worlders are renown for their rigid adherence to proper Sidh tradition and ideology, as opposed to the more liberal fringes of the Imperium.

This is perhaps due to the larger population and greater presence of the authorities along with patent absence of any foreigners, peer pressure and close authority supervision leading to rigid traditionalist attitudes. Because of this, rebellious non-conformists and misfits generally find it more comfortable to settle on outer worlds, away from the prying eyes of the authorities and disapproving neighbors.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.
