We're less of a nation and more of a religious terrorist movement.

A single ursus demon (not even one of the most powerful) can slaughter a couple dozen villages singlehandedly and still have time to murder a militia or five. Powerful demons and aberrations can outright erase things from reality itself through the use of the Song. This includes entire cities, or even whole nations.
