Computers in YN.

Postby British Guangzhou » Sat Oct 28, 2017 2:46 pm

Are computers a thing in your nation? Yes.
What was the first computer in YN? When was it built? The first computer was the CACFGP (Cantonese Accounting Computer For General Purposes), built in 1950 and located at the Royal Cantonese University. While, as it's name implies, it was mostly made for mathematics and accounting, it could do a lot more, and was considered one of the most advanced computers of it's time. It was one of the first computers to do away with punched cards, and instead used a system of tape cartridges for all of it's storage. It is one of the oldest computers still in existence.
What is the most popular operating system? Windows 7.
What operating system does your government use? Windows 7 and SUSE Enterprise Linux. The government formerly used Solaris, and before that, NeXTSTEP. Both were UNIX-based operating systems that were phased out in favour of the more common Windows operating system in 2008. Government servers were switched to SUSE Linux in 2010.
Does your nation manufacture computers? Yes.
If yes, what brands currently are involved in YN's computer industry? Acer, MSI, Lenovo (formerly Legend), ASUS, CCM (Cantonese Computer Manufacturing, domestic), National Computer (formerly owned by Panasonic, spun off in 1999, domestic), and Dragon Computer (domestic, no relation to the Welsh-based Dragon computer company that existed in the 1980s)
What are the most popular computer brands in YN? Currently, Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, CCM, and Dragon
In the 1980s, Commodore, Sinclair, Amstrad, Dragon, CCM, NEC, Sony, Philips, and Sharp were all popular computer makers. MSX computers were popular due to their large library of games and software, with BASIC-based computers like the Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, and CCM 800 being popular alternatives, mostly due to their lower prices.

Are computers a thing in your nation?
Yes
What was the first computer in YN? When was it built?
The one that was on the first ship to land on the main habitable planet in our solar system was the first ever in our nation. The first computer developed by a Dagnian company was a handheld communication device.
What is the most popular operating system?
MankietOS is the most popular of all OSs. It was designed for standalone smartwatches and other very small wearables/implantables. The next most popular is Komórka, which is for handheld devices. Most other purposes from supercomputers to laptops, AparOS is the most popular. All can trace their roots back to the old Unix from a thousand years ago, and though many of the features and supported hardware are radically different, some of the internal structure remains the same. All are partially open source.
What operating system does your government use?
The federal government uses an OS named Luna, another open source OS with striking similarities to the old Unix. A government contractor does most of the work on it and it includes specialised proprietary database software as well as a proprietary security solution. Because its focus is on security, it is very slow to adopt new features, and is often many years behind consumer OSs.
Does your nation manufacture computers?
Yes. The design and engineering are done primarily in Dagnia. 80% of manufacturing of physical devices is done elsewhere.
If yes, what brands currently are involved in YN's computer industry?
Ślivka/Сьливка is the most popular electronics brand in Dagnia. They are a member of the AparOS foundation and the primary contributor as the OS powers most of their products. They produce the most wearables as well as portable computers and desktops. Edging them out on handhelds though is WileyFrog.
What are the most popular computer brands in YN?
Ślivka/Сьливка, WileyFrog, TriPlus, Pikselek, and Drojdka are common brands that either produce whole systems or components and are seen across the galaxy. TriPlus's claim to fame is that while they make few whole products, 30% of all electronics in the galaxy contain more than one component made by them.
Wait an hour, and it will be now again

What was the first computer in YN? When was it built? I've forgotten its name ED: The Tinhamptonian University Calculator, made some time around 1955 - actually, no, it was 1955.
What is the most popular operating system? Some flavour of Windows.
What operating system does your government use? Some flavour of Windows. At least 7, now that the GDPR doesn't allow XP and Vista people to buy nice shiny thingies online.
Does your nation manufacture computers? No. We outsource that shit to the People's Republic of China.

Are computers a thing in your nation? Obviously like most of the society of the contemporary time, yes.

What was the first computer in YN? When was it built? The MRDAC (Macro-Radio Distributive Arithmetic Computer), built in 1943, was an automatic decryptor made by the Bureau of War Intelligence during the rule of Joseph Stalin. It was used to send and receive encrypted data through extremely high-frequency shortwaves across European theater to agents' and spies' stste-of-the-art microtransmits, hidden in their watches, pens, neckties, earpieces, etc .The machine transmits rows of intelligence information through eight large satellite transmitters permanently stationed around the east cities of Okstovskaya. It was also used by the Allies, by commissioning sister units, of which 6 were produced by the Bureau. Two of the units were modified and used by the United States, one by the UK, one by Allied France, and the remaining by Soviet Union. Each unit costs around $5 million to build ($9 million for the modified), and took 6 months to fully establish verifiable and concrete data transmission mechanics.

What is the most popular operating system? Windows.

What operating system does your government use? Classified, but leaked information shows a state-made OS, based on the MAC OS X interface, much like the Red Star OS.

Does your nation manufacture computers? Yes. AMD has a partner semi-conductor factory located in Broxtin, which is owned by a state technology company. Samsung currently operates two production hubs that produce RAM modules and M.2 SSDs mainly, and mobile phones secondarily. Seagate and Western Digital share the same factory, although divided to respective brands. Currently, local PC brands Rubie and Ki-Lo produce AIO computers, desktops, and NUCs that primarily targets the gaming community, although they also offer business-oriented PC products.

If yes, what brands currently are involved in YN's computer industry? Mostly, overseas computer brands are suggested upon the PC community, although local brands like Rubie, Ki-Lo, LOmO, Frikar, ELSA, Ovlom, Proga, and much more have maintained high market sales in the country.

What are the most popular computer brands in YN? Ki-Lo currently tops GPU and motherboard sales, usually of low-price yet high-quality products powered by Radeon on the GPU industry and Intel in the motherboard industry. AMD beats Intel in CPU sales for its Ryzen APU series according to critics in Okstovskaya, while LOmO provides the most in the non-consumer market with its reliable business microprocessors. Kingston, Corsair, Gypron (also a local company), and Crucial currently owns most RAM-storage market sales in the country.
