[Q&A] Ask the Nordic Commonwealth

Helena Farseer, the Fylkja of the Nordic Commonwealth, has made the decision to allow the visiting envoys and chroniclers of foreign lands to ask questions concerning her and the Commonwealth she reigns over. If you have inquiries, do not be afraid to ask them.
Praise the Allfather!

OoC: Please do not ask questions that have to do with your own nations, unless they are somehow compatible with our lore.

Our exact cuisine varies by region, but in general, staples in our diet include meats such as goose, beef and venison, many different kinds of seafood, wild fruits, and different kinds of wheat. Dishes based on lean meats and wheat tend to be more prominent in southern areas, while seafood and wild fruits are more common in the North.

OoC: The Nordic Commonwealth has very little in common compared with modern day Sweden. For one thing, it still maintains traditional Viking age culture and religion, as opposed to the Christian-influenced culture of modern Sweden. Also, the social order is quite different from both modern Sweden and even the medieval Kingdom of Sweden.

The Nordic Commonwealth does not have a single military. Instead, all the rulers of the realm, including the Fylkja herself, has their own standing army and navy. For the most part, membership is entirely voluntary, and equipment is not standardized. Instead, soldiers are expected to be responsible for procuring their own equipment.

While longships are by far the most common ships in our fleet due to their speed and versatility, we have other types as well, most notably the Knarr, which we use for carrying heavier cargo on longer journeys.

How would your navy evolve? Would the longboat survive the test of time, and still be a reference for future naval classes in the Nordic Commonwealth? For example, would the 30's - 40's Destroyer classes still somewhat resemble the shape of a longboat?

Our method of warfare, including naval warfare, places a strong emphasis on pragmatism and functionality. This means that as new technology is obtained, we will likely discard old designs for whatever works best.

No. Any representation of our people that displays us wearing that sort of headwear is Christian propaganda designed to make us seem demonic.

The bird on the banner is a raven, which represents the power and wisdom of Odin, the god that we revere the most.

The kingdoms ruled by them are our vassals. They are mostly allowed to keep to themselves so long as they continue to pay tribute in gold and thralls. In general though, anyone who is not capable of speaking Norse well is looked down upon.

Our economy has always rested significantly on trade. In recent years, we've been trying to have it be more dominant in our economy since it's more sustainable than raiding, but progress has been slow. As for how much territory we control, we directly rule over Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Estonia, and parts of Livonia. We also have vassals and colonies that further rule over all of the British Isles and parts of Francia, Saxony, Anatolia, the Rus Lands, Vinland, the Levant, Egypt and Libya.

Yes. We often engage in trade with Arab and Berber traders, and many of our colonies are located in those regions. As for nomadic peoples, although we are in contact with several Tartar clans, we hold no influence over them due to their particular lifestyle.

Aside from alcohol (and occasionally hashish procured from trade), the only psychoactive substance our people consume is a certain variety of mushrooms, which is occasionally used by some of our warriors in battle, and in religious ceremonies.

If you control all the territories of the region of Scandinavia, why not reform and call your nation the ‘Commonwealth of Scandinavia’ instead of ‘Nordic’

The southernmost point that we have settled is Northern Egypt, though there are legends that tell of explorers and traders venturing as far south as the southern tip of the Red Sea.

OoC: “Scandinavia” normally refers to exclusively Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. “Nordic” is broader, and further encompasses Iceland, Finland, and in some definitions, Estonia. Therefore, “Nordic” is actually more accurate.
