OOC: You said in your Factbook that you enjoy playing video games. What is your current favorite?
And what do you think of Canada, being a native Australian?

Sorry for leaving this alone for so long guys, I've just not be paying attention. Anyway, I've decided that I won't answer questions asking what Astela or even myself thinks about your nation or leader; no disrespect meant, but this thread is meant to be about my nation, not yours. So anyway, let's hope I don't let this entire topic fester and nearly die again.

I'd say it's Battlefield 1, right now. The gameplay is just exceptional, the weapons are mostly pretty cool, and it got me really interested in learning about the First World War.
Personally, I think Canada would be a brilliant place to live! I don't know too much about its politics because it just doesn't interest me, but with so much land where nobody lives, it'd be beautiful just exploring it all, you know?

Oof, good question... It'd have to be either Gears of War 4 or Project CARS. For Gears, I felt like the gameplay hadn't evolved at all, and the characters were just sooooo annoying. For CARS, I honestly think I hated it because I sucked. :p

Not a serious one, no. The last really bad one happened between 1367 and 1371, where a virus from a newly-discovered planet infected some explorers; they returned to civilisation with the virus, and it soon spread to a few other planets before being discovered and eventually eradicated. It didn't kill that many people, but the symptoms were very noticeable, and occasionally pretty bad.

I probably should have been more specific in my post above - I won't be answering any questions about anyone else's nation, people, leader, et cetera; it's not the purpose I intended when I made this topic. Hope you understand.

Posting again to confirm and react to replies!

I tried Battlefield 1, it is a nice game. I didn’t get to play much of it (at a gaming lounge and didn’t have long) but I managed to almost finish the mission with tanks. Controls were very simple and it was gorgeous. Sadly, Billy Bishop, nor his famed vehicle, the Nieuport 17, are featured (yet!)

I didn’t actually think that you were going to talk about the sights of my country, usually it’s “I love the people!”, etc. But yes, it is gorgeous. I have the good fortune to live in New Brunswick, which contains just about all that I want in a landscape: rolling hills, tall(ish) mountains, ponds, rivers, the Atlantic and the breath-taking Bay of Fundy. Saw a Merlin once there, but still hoping for the chance to spot a Peregrine. I have a very outdoorsy family, and we explore a lot.

Howdy partner!

I got a little something to ask: Is English spoken a lot in Albali? Do y'all learn it in school? And is it used as a lingua franca over there, the way it is on Earth?

Here in San Prospero, English wasn't really that popular before I became president. Everyone had to learn Latin, and I remember HATING those classes – it was all memorization and dictations, just like pretty much any other school subject at the time. No wonder I dropped out after 5th grade, 'cause school was boring and useless and molto stupido.

Upon taking office, one of the first things I did to the school system was scrap the mandatory Latin classes 'cause let's face it: what good's a long dead language with an eye-watering grammar? So Latin is out and English is in, and it's more popular than ever. But nobody's forced to learn it – this is a free country, after all.

Also, this might be a shock, but I prefer the American accent, especially with a slight Southern drawl. For me, the Queen's English just feels posh and stiff. I also use American spellings – I just think it looks more natural without all those faux-French words: "aubergine", "colour", "theatre", "manœuvre". And don't forget "maths" ... OMG, I can't even. How about y'all?

Yours,
President Primavera

P.S. You can call me Prima. I won't bite, I promise!

(OOC: The views expressed by President Prima are not my actual views.)

"Hello, nice to meet ya! So, English is not spoken in Albali at all*: instead, we speak Albalian. I'll try not to bore you overmuch, but it is essentially a combination of the Aquariian and the Ausari languages; when the two united thousands of years ago, it was decided that a new language was needed to show further solidarity between the two peoples. I suppose it has some parallels with many central-European languages like German and a smattering of French, with some Polish, Estonian and Finnish elements mixed in."

* IC'ly, the Albalians have not met humans yet - they are aware of their existence and study them from afar, however. Of course, in the forum with non-canon interactions it's hard to avoid.

Skanien wrote:What a cultural based of your nation? Western European, Eastern European, East Asian, middle east and etc

The culture of Albali is mostly like German, at least for the people. They tend to be organised and seek efficient solutions, but they re somewhat negative people as well. Many Albalians have a somewhat dry sense of humour. In the grand scheme of things though, it's really a mish-mash of different cultures from all over the world. For example, Albalian food is comparable to that of Italy or Spain, clothing from all over the place. It just depends, really.

Yes, it does. The most recognised holiday is Unification Day; I have some information about it already, which you can find right here. There is also the Republic Day, a holiday that falls annually on 6 July. It's to celebrate the overthrowing of the totalitarian monarchy, and the transition to a republic. It has only been celebrated twice within Albali, happening since 2017. Think of it like Independence Day in the United States, just on a gigantic scale.

I can't really think of a way to reply to this IC'ly, to be honest.
I've just stopped caring about my whole embassy thing since it's pretty useless, but if that changes I'll let you know. :)

"I'm a libertarian because I saw what the totalitarian rule of my former queen was doung my country, and I want to reverse all the damage that such an iron-fisted rule has caused. People should be free to determine their own paths in life while ensuring that everyone has a good enough wage to survive. Which, with various companies all competing within the same labour pool, would be possible."

Anyway, he HoI4 thing... My most successful playthrough would probably be the time I reunited the German Empire under Kaiser Wilhelm II, rebuilt the High Seas Fleet, then beat up the Soviet Union. After that, I declared war on the Allies and also won that war by 1946.

What is the population's general opinion on monarchy? Our nation also overthrew the despotic monarchy for a republic, so initially we despised the very idea for a monarchy, but as we became westernized, we learned that there existed a concept of "constitutional monarchy", so most of the population might have a neutral opinion in that case.

I have several questions, hope you don't mind.
  • Did you base your language on any real languages? I can see influences from Estonian (Vabariik), Icelandic (pronunciation of á), but any other influences aren't that obvious.
  • On top of that, what other languages, besides English, do you speak? (fluently, or have a little experience with)
  • I saw that you also play HOI4, have you played any other strategy game? (CK2, EU4, Victoria 2 to be exact) If not, would you be interested?

Sorry mate, but this thread isn't for diplomatic stuff, so I kinda have to ignore what you've asked. Again, sorry.

"I can't speak for everyone, but actually a lot of people seem to hold a favourable view of the monarchical system. Those people do see what terror and hardship the monarchy has brought in the past decade or so, but it's hard for many to let go of an Albalian tradition that has lasted for the entire duration of our country, especially when this is the first time the monarchy has truly failed us. I can sympathise with them, but I certainly wouldn't want to see a return of an absolute monarchy. A constitutional monarchy, though... it's debatable, but not entirely out of the question."
- Astela

Now, OOC stuff:

I did base the language off of Estonian and Finnish at first because I've actually not seen anyone do that on NS. Since then, it's evolved into a mutation of a tonne of other languages. I've got a tonne of German in there, for example the Vehrmisjoud (Defence Forces) has the first part -vehr- which comes from the German 'wehr'. There is some French and Italian in there as well, and a decent amount of Polish. It's really just a bunch of languages that I think sound really cool.
I can only speak English totally fluently - I have a decent grasp on German and I know a bit of French, but I certainly wouldn't call myself fluent in either. I've also picked up little bits of other languages like Swedish and Japanese from when I visited those countries, but there's no way I could even hope to have a conversation with anyone.

So, strategy games... besides HoI4, I really enjoy playing Stellaris and I occasionally play CK2 as well. I've actually been thinking of getting EU4, too - I've heard good things about it. Outside of Paradox's stuff, I like Civ V and Beyond Earth, and Total War: Rome II is literally a gift from God.

Greetings, sir or madam.

What is your nation's official position (if it has one) on the conflicting ideas of geocentrism (the Sun orbits the Earth) versus heliocentrism (the Earth orbits the Sun)?

The position of the Ecclesiastical State, in accordance with traditional Catholic teaching, is that the Earth was created by the Lord and placed at the centre of His universe. So naturally, all of the other celestial objects revolve around it, including the Sun, Moon, planets and stars. We disagree with the propositions of Galileo and his contemporaries – we believe that those "laws of physics" are purely a conspiracy by devil-worshippers to weaken the population's faith, by denying the omnipotence of the Creator and attempting to explain the divine mysteries using the logic of mortals. Instead of concerning ourselves with why things are the way they are, which leads to endless uncertainties, we prefer to just accept them as how the Lord wanted them to be.

Blessed day to all,

Plácido Fernandes
Minister of Religion and Culture

Subject: Some Questions
Good...whatever time it is for you.

I’m...well it says in the title. Sorry. I’m still...getting used to this. Have to be careful, anyway! So, I wanted to ask a couple of questions:

1. How much forgiveness do you think should be given people who were...like...extremely horrible in the past, but trying to change that?
2. What advice do you have for anyone in that situation?
3. Are those ears of yours extra sensitive and stuff? I mean, I only know nekofication, so...
4. Opinions on magic?
5. What’s the thing you regret most? Sorry, kind of a sad question, I’m just...curious.

I’d appreciate any answers you have. And, also...sorry.
