the alternative to a g36 that doesn't melt is a g36 with metal trunnion cradle

or thermostabilized materials

or HK416

or just let the G36 ride as is because your doods are only going to be fighting for about 30 seconds before the glow washes over them and frees them from this oppressive mortal coil

Seriously though, I'd omit the pre-packed water--that's what your camelback and canteens are for--and probably throw in a jelly packet to make the biscuits more palatable, and a small pack of candy as a little morale-booster. Maybe toss in a Soldier Fuel or Clif Bar equivalent as well.

You'll eat what you're given. Especially if you've been hiking and killin' for 16 hours and it's literally the only food you have.

Biscuits, Brown isn't supposed to be palatable. It's just meant to clog up your insides so you don't have to crap in a bush during field exercises.

What would be realistic networked equipment that be available to the infantry within the next 5 years that would amplify their situational awareness and combat lethality/survive-ability without excessive weight and requiring excessive dedicated infrastructure?

Sounds better than what my troops can expect:

Rice, brick tea, dried fish/meat(Beef or Sheep), more rice, dried/candied fruit, veggies(yams mostly), steamed bananas wrapped in palm, A bit of citrus, dairy products derived from sheep maintained by their unit, and finally more rice. Boring but whatever.

a few, some aren't.

There is an oddly 'human' feel to eating food that looks pretty okay out of a can, as opposed to a plain green little pouch which has """""food""""" in it.

The Kaza are not Europeans, they don't eat European food. Also last I checked you don't need to can rice, storage is quite simple.

condensed milk, tinned haggis, barley stew and various cereals and grains (rice, semolina and macaroni to name but a few) boiled into pudding with milk and sugar are the way the truth and the light of Crookfur rations.

Basically every horror of "traditional" British school dinners made real and even more nightmarish.

Cans of ground up meat paste salted to in-edibility and than cooked in honey to get the salt out. They come in chicken, fish, beef, pork or mixed. They all taste the same.
