IC National information
a) Brief description of your nation: The Shenzhou Archipelago was originally a divided land cut off from the rest of the outside world, creating an ideology of which the Archipelago was in the centre of, or is even, the entire world. The land was in what seemed like a perpetual state of war. Multiple dynasties constantly battled each other for control over Islands. War plagued the kingdom for centuries. That changed after explorers from [INSERT REGION'S EUROPE] discovered it on 1562, exposing the populace to new technologies and concepts. One of the states, Shenzhou, started trading with the explorers. Trading its Natural Resources for weapons, which they used to slowly conquer the island and declare the Shenzhouese Empire in 1647.

(Due to my lack of the region's lore, I'll fast forward to the 20th Century)
Shenzhou, starred to suffer communist uprising on a daily basis as corruption grew and the nation became more unstable. Things got a lot worse after the emperor died at 55 from unknown causes, allowing his 15 year old son to take the throne, allowing the communists to commence the Great Revolution, beginning the Shenzhou civil war in 1932 and ending it in 1940, creating the Shenzhou People's Republic. The republic has no head of state, instead, is governed directly by the National Assembly, the nation's unicameral legislative body. Despite this, the Chairperson of the Assembly is sometimes considered as the nation's head of state.
b) What languages are spoken in your nation?: Several dialects of Chinese, Cantonese is the official language and serves as a unifying Lingua Franca
c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?: The Shenzhouese are the largest group, composing 82% of the total population, 8% of the population are Mongolians, 5% are Indo-Aryan and Dravidian Groups, 3% are West African Groups and 2% are white.
d) What are the major religions among your population?: Shenzhou is a surprising religiously diverse nation. 45% of people are non-religious, 20% Believe in Old Shenzhouese Folklore, 15% believe in Christianity, 10% believe in Hinduism and another 10% believe in a wide array of "micro-religions"
e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: Internationally, the nation would be considered as a Middle Power, and also will be considered as a Regional Power in its Oceanic Neighbourhood, often filling the role of a mediator of peace
f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.): The People's Military has 1,480,000 active personnel, while a majority of the nation's inhabitants in the navy and marine corps. It serves the role of protecting the Shenzhouese State & People, as well as protecting national interests abroad. The Air Force (Smallest Branch) is slightly outdated in equipment, the army is seeing as relatively outdated as well and in need of major refitting while the navy is the most advanced branch.
g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: The SPR is a Economic Giant, with manufacturing being a major industry. That, plus its large military, makes much of the international community seeing the nation as a future emerging power.
h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? If seen as excessive, I'll reduce it

e) Nation's head of state: Empress Lyra Severas.

f) Nation's head of gov’t (if applicable): Archon Laokos Sethys.

IC National information

a) Brief description of your nation: I mean, its not that brief, so I hope its ok.

Vylaris is an Empire in as much it is a product of imperialism. The area has always had a dominant nation at its core, and one that has always sought to control the states at its periphery (sort of similar the Chinese core-vassal outlook). Vylaris itself is a monarchy, though in in essence it is ruled by a mercantile elite, who share power with an increasingly concerned nobility. Both groups are centered around the coast, and form the oligarchic nucleus of the Empire. Their culture is properly titled Vylaran, though in actuality, it is something of a syncretic fusion of the major cities of this region - principally Nicaea and Drepana. This culture could be broadly described as tolerant, with emphases on compromise, individual effort and free spirit. There is a strong tendency to improve (but not replace) a status quo, to accept (but not be bound by) differing views, and to ensure a fair system is in place, but not one that smothers the individual. Social liberalism is gradually gaining popularity, but prejudices remain. Religion is increasingly absent from public life, and instead there is a focus on secular education. Outsiders are welcomed, though one can more readily see ethnic tensions emerge around the Tiarnans and Ryseans. This mentality provides the cultural framework for the empire as a whole, in everything from a common language and legal systems to spending patterns, social norms and fashion trends.

This framework is the lattice that secures the nation, yet it is neither so crystallised or so universal as Vylarans like to imagine. It can contrast sharply with the familial power structures of Rysea, the fierce clan loyalty in Tiarna, or even the paternalistic urges beginning to emerge in Vylaran society - both in the pseudo-feudalism of the countryside, and the desire for social progress in the cities. Nor is it as fair as imagined - the mercantile core, fearful of losing power, long ago sought to effectively rig much of it in their favour, and local elites did the same elsewhere. Most Vylarans realise these contradictions on some level, but are loth to admit their nation is dysfunctional.

Vylaris is currently preoccupied with territorial integrity, which primarily means retaining control of Tiarna. After a humiliating failed invasion, and several historical wars, the place has become something of national fixation. However, underlying this whole issue is the broader fault-line of identity. Vylaris’s imperial framework is no substitute for a strong national image, and its patchwork governance (not to mention growing socio-economic divisions) has only added to the centrifugal forces tugging at the Empire. Controlling Tiarna means that Vylaris can feasibly claim to be an Empire, and the lure of stability this promises; without it, the divisions that lie at its core become ever so more apparent.

In this respect, Tiarna is something of a proxy for this inner conflict, where the fault lines are writ large. The nolbe houses and factions that support Vylaris in many ways support the ideal of an Empire - that a single governmental framework can form the glue for a multi-ethnic and poly-cultural nation. By contrast, the rebels are appealing to the age old notion of Tiarnan exceptionalism, and in essence, the idea of a culturally homogenous nation-state. The same divides exist in Rysea (though with marginally lower violence) - both between the two principal factions, but also amongst the hill tribes.

However, in Vylaris itself, the divisions play out rather differently. Here the battle is less about the merits of cultural identity, but about who the Empire should represent. The nobles have for some time juggled the state-sponsored stability of the workers with the nascent social democratic movements of the middle classes. Now, the old oligarchic power structure is straining against the idea of a wider enfranchisement, though few are currently willing to up-end the system, for fear of where that might truly lead.

This contradictory principal extends to Vylaris’ foreign policy, and indeed in the collective psyche of the nation. Vylarans are outgoing, mercantile and curious. Equally, there is a drip-feed of paranoia lodged in their minds, leading an enduring desire for some underlying stability. The morality of distant massacres is often subdued, but the geo-political implications can gnaw at their minds. They can handle autocracy as long as there is progress, while the spasms of a populist democracy are considered anathema. Territorial sovereignty is not sacrosanct, but an international order is something to be both reinforced and manipulated. Vylaran literature is filled with the fear of ‘the mob’, but equally concerned with the march of progress. And so on.

I’ve elaborated on my nation like this, as I will often be writing from the perspective of a Vylaran elite, where much of the above is taken for granted. The divisions I’ve mentioned are largely implicit, and hidden by the flow of daily life. Conversely, the view from Tiarna is entirely different, and many characters here will express polar opposite viewpoints. The common themes that unite characters in both areas are ones of powerlessness, hope and uncertainty - the awareness that their nation (or their idea of nationhood) is flawed, the desire to change this, but the fear that they are inadequate such a task.

b) What languages are spoken in your nation?: There is a central language spoken in Vylaris (think koine greek), with some regional variation. There are also languages in Tiarna (Celtic, with some Georgian/Armenian influences) Rysea (Kurdish/Farsi) and amongst the Aravi (Nordic), each with a number of dialects, some very distinct. With the Tiarnan language in particular, the language has acquired terms and phrases from Vylaran and Rysean languages.

c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?: Very simply: Vylarans (Greek/Italian); Tiarnans (Galatian Celts); Ryseans (Persians/Kurdish) and a small number of Aravi (From Nordic Nation in the region). The rl analogues are more points of reference than precise comparisons.

d) What are the major religions among your population?: This is an area I have developed less. Vylaris is largely secular, and bar some lingering practices, religion has a limited role in public life. There is no state religion. This reflects that the monarchy has no particular divine mandate - no chosen deity to which it is wed. Instead, the Emperor is confirmed as divinely appointed in a large series of local cults. This is largely a formal process, but some coercion was or is needed with Tiarnan and Rysean pantheons. Some suspect this diffuse and unwieldy nature was done to minimise the importance religion might play in politics. Privately, Vylarans practice a large number of religions, usually praying to some number of these deities and spirits (the exact scope of the Pantheon is largely based on personal judgement. This largely regarded as a private affair.

e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: Geo-politically, I envisage Vylaris as somewhere between a second and third rate power. This would be enough to conceivably resist coercion by first tier nations (thought hardly a given), and be able to deal with peers, but not much beyond that.

In practice, Vylaris is too isolated and too internally driven to have a major international role. Policy is largely based around three criteria: to maintain a delicate series of domestic balances; to prevent considerable foreign intrusion; and to prevent any outside support for Tiarna. As one can see, these are mutually reinforced - foreign intervention might well tip the internal balance of factions within the state, or might result in succour for the Tiarnan revolt. A comparison might be how elements of Chinese diplomacy revolve around recognition of Taiwan. It is worth noting that is essentially a fragile system - perhaps more fragile than is recognised. It may be untenable.

Beyond that Vylaris has little concern for international governance systems, preferring to free-ride where possible. This means that it has some but limited desire for peacekeeping, or for international rules creation. A partial exception would be rules on trade, to which it has a greater interest (being of mildly liberalising intent). It also steers clear of close bilateral alliances or membership of tightly wedded blocs, and would rather diversify ties, so as to minimise exposure or commitment. It is however, willing to cooperate on arms purchases, intelligence sharing, deportation rights and economic ties. In short, while not isolationist, it deliberately holds back from punching at its full strength, or from deep involvement in external affairs. This partially due to, but is also the present policy of Archons Sethys and []. Other Archons, such as Rasafon, or Avakian strongly disagree with this approach, and prefer influence building and interventionism.

Should Vylaris regain some degree of stability (either with strong internal rule of some sort, or the failure/success of the Tiarnan revolt) and drive, it could be moderately more influential. I struggle to find precise rl analogues - it conceptually could act as a Brazil, a Turkey, or an Iranian level spoiler power. More to the point, this role is quite far from the present situation. It is currently close to Pakistan - able to interfere in proximate nations at the behest of internal directives, but in a fragile and limited capacity at best.

f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.): All of these figures are based on the population of 74 million.

Total Active Combat Personnel:1.026 Million. 1.506 Million.
Total Active Personnel: 1.256 Million. 1.752 Million.
Total reserve Personnel: 0.348 Million.

1.212 Million Ground Troops
Nine Armies of 772,000 Legionaries. 336,000 Tiarnan Auxilaries. 144,000 Rysean Auxilaries.
There are 6 Guard Legions, 10 Cataphract Legions (sort of like Armoured divisions), 18 Field Legions (large Mechanised Infantry Divisions), 12 Garrison Legions (smaller Mechanised Infantry Divisions). Guard and Cataphract Legions have the best equipment. Organisation and Equipments of the Auxiliaries varies considerably.

Its also worth pointing out that 10 Legions are deployed as an occupying force in Tiarna, along with all of the Tiarnan Axuilaries.

90,000 Naval Personnel. 66,000 Marines. 224 Surface Vessels.
60,000 Airforce Personnel. 798 Aircraft.

Vylaran armed forces are not especially organised towards long-distance interventions. However, they are more offensively orientated than a purely territorial defence force. Possibly somewhere between South Korea and Turkey (or even Pakistan).

Vylaran Equipment is typically good, but not cutting edge; the exception to this is the fleet, which is heavily modernised. A lot of the old equipment was purchased in the 1980s specifically for the Tiarnan Invasion, and was only recently phased out for later 90s/early 2000's tech. The nature of the occupation (and the plans for invasion prior to this) mean that there was a slight emphasis for quantity over quality.

The war and anti-insurgency operations mean that there is a decent body of experience in the higher ranks and among the more elite units. However, this is less true for newer recruits and other units.

g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: Bluntly I don't think that in its current form (a form I will keep for some time), that Vylaris would have any dramatic impact on existing power structures. It may lend additional support to one bloc over another. Vylaris does have a large army and is decently wealthy, so these provide some ability for power projection. I've balanced this somewhat by setting Vylaris up as having a number of dependencies that limit what it could achieve - particularly the reliance on foreign capital, export markets, suppliers of raw materials (including oil), and providers of military equipment. These create a tendency to support a status quo, rather than to be disruptive.

The biggest current issue is political fragility. I've set this up so that it would eventually reach cause internal crises - these would likely invite foreign support in some fashion. That means Vylaris's most disruptive role may be as a 'prize' for other nations to compete over. Equally, if these are resolved, it may be stronger and agressive. Alternatively it could be hobbled entirely.

I'm pasting a more detailed passage on Vylaran economics for reference:

Vylaris is somewhat centrist economically. It has a GDP per capita of c.32,000 NSD (happy to lower this if needed), and would currently be considered to be doing decently, if not spectacularly economically. Inflation currently averages at 3%, growth at 2.1%, and unemployment at 6.5% (with significant regional disparities). The economic heartland is centred around the capital, where the major industries are often in the tertiary sector. It is also where some of the more successful manufacturing operations are located, such as civilian shipbuilding and aerospace. The workforce here is highly educated, local administration conducive to business activity (including foreign companies), and there are several free trade zones. By contrast, the rural mountainous areas are home to higher unemployment, lower prices and are generally less vibrant economically. Between these two contrasting regions lies the rough hills and plains, where labour (and land) is cheap, leading to a focus on low-end manufacturing and copper mining.

There is a strong emphasis on exports and Vylaris remains very open to free trade, though the main driver of growth remains domestic consumption. This is in turn supported by favourable demographics - Vylaris has long been supportive of immigration, and state policies have consistently incentivised families with 2 children, or just under the replenishment rate. Birthrates in Tiarna and Rysea are higher, though life expectancy is lower.

Healthcare is largely supplied through a Bismarckian system, and education is state funded. Welfare policies and pensions are comparatively more basic. For instance, a ‘Triple-lock’ system that is often used in richer nations to guarantee pensions is actually banned by law in Vylaris. While the minimum wage is decent, it is usually only raised in small levels, leading it to be outstripped by inflation. There are limited agricultural subsidies, and the state favours investment policies, particularly in infrastructure. There is a progressive tax system. Banks are regulated, particularly with regards to liquidity buffers. The government has an annual budget deficit of 3%, and public debt is 45% of GDP.

The main issues are typically focused around inequalities arising from the effects of trade, and poor local governance. Structural unemployment is a significant problem, particularly in mountainous rural areas. Land ownership is relatively concentrated in these same areas (often held by nobles), leading to an underuse of resources, and effectively a rent-seeking economy (as opposed to wealth creation). House ownership rates are thus comparatively low, many families to rack up significant debt - these trends are also more prevalent in areas with high structural unemployment. Consequently, during economic downturns, the government often has to bail out traditional employers in these areas, but many would argue that this has rewarded stagnation, leading to a vicious circle. It is no coincidence that the military often finds many recruits from such areas.

Moreover, given a lack of several key natural resources, Vylaris has a sustained and significant deficit in the trade of goods, which feeds into an overall Balance of Payments deficit. This is financed by foreign cashflows, however, these rest on macroeconomic and political stability. Consequently outbreaks of unrest (in Tiarna, but also generally), are often painful for the Empire, tending towards rather sharp ‘ripple effects’ as market confidence plummets. Since the 1970s, government policies have favoured long-term FDI rather than ‘hot money’. This acted as something of a cushion against sudden outflows, but has also rewarded established firms, and made it harder for smaller/growing enterprises to have sufficient access to funds.

Given the political situation of Vylaris, it is worth noting that some specific areas are much more deprived economically. These are Rysea and Tiarna. The former area is constrained by tribal laws (the tribes themselves often control local administration), a constrictive bureaucracy, and a general backwards outlook. Tiarna itself used to be home to plenty of manufacturing sites, but since the conquest and subsequent unrest, a good deal of this has left. What remains is often directly subsidised by the Vylaran state. Domestic consumption, though growing, has also remain subdued, and most infrastructure projects are done directly by the state. That being said there are some sources of wealth - the steady confiscation of any property belonging to the rebel factions, as well the general prospects for looting and state-sponsored extortion has attracted several noble collectives, while the cheaper, educated labour is also a source of low costs.

h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? I'm not wedded to any single stat (population is especially negotiable).

IC Geographical/resource

General lists, we don't expect you to know all the details before joining and getting a map place.

a) What does your nation excel in exporting: Various manufactured products (civilian ships; some aerospace; semiconductors; machinery); textiles; LNG; finance.

b) What does your nation need to import?: Many foodstuffs; raw materials; concrete/sand; plastics; oil; lithium; some rare-earth metals; some IT poducts; some manufactured products (cars); defence products.

c) What is your country self sufficient on?: Some foodstuffs (typically grains and fruits); several metals; bauxite; LNG; coal; textiles.

d) What is your preferred location on the regional map? The current map of Vylaris that I have is a couple of islands (ignore the ones in grey), which may be problematic. . However, these used to be attached to a continental landmass, and I would even prefer that. I don't what the regional view in sticking something like that onto the pre-existing map. . Given my greek roots for this nation, I was thinking of having Vylaris South-West of Latin (Latin and I shared some canon in Cornellia that could be revived). The issue here is that would probably entail islands. Alternatively, I could go near/next to Sydalon (ethnicity permitting), or somewhere on the coast between Akhad and the Rabinovskan Empire.

IC National information

a) Brief description of your nation:

Rytande is a large, riparian nation that dominates the eastern coast of the Periclean Sea. It’s nine constituent states are all members of the Allmän Runeright, a pseudo-socialist theocracy that ultimately controls its subordinates states. It is a highly centralized state, though political organizations are almost defunct at the national level. The Divinate, as it is sometimes called, is the federal legislative and administrative body of priests, nobles, and layfolk that participate in public deliberations. The central state of Mjiorn is constitutionally the equal of the other eight Republics, but asserts itself as the supreme power in the Allmän Runeright.

The Allmän Runeright was formed in 1917 when Clovis Linné overthrew the People’s Provisional Politburo of Peltstadt and instituted the Valley Constitution of 1917. Both events actually occurred in 1916, but were originally planned to take place in 1917. The Allmän Runeright became a federative body in 1921 when it was unified with Harvok and Palstave. After Linné’s death 1923, Friedrich Schicklgruber seized power along with his Sociological National Party (aka SocNat). On a wave of religious and philosophical fundamentalism, Schicklgruber coined the ideology of Runic-Linnism and instituted a planned reality. The Great Depolarization , a political purge, occurred in 1935, solidifying the Schicklgruberic control of the federal government. In a series of aggressive expansions in the 1940s and 50s, Schicklgruber’s government absorbed the neighboring republics of Volgar, Tafl, Fidchell, Moraine, Kalmar, and Saksen in the Allmän Runeright.

b) What languages are spoken in your nation?:

  • Nordanese...85%
  • Old Russic….12%
  • Greek…………...5%

c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?:

  • Soudane….............45%
  • Nordane……………..34%
  • Persian………………..17%
  • Thousand Island...4%

d) What are the major religions among your population?:

  • Catholic…….40%
  • Protestant...30%
  • Pagan………...29%
  • Orthodox…..11%

e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?:

The Allmän Runeright is a post-socialist great power faced with chronic ethno-lingo-religious internal conflicts that pose constant threats to the central government. While it may have once been a super-power, it is not any more. Its divisive politics and offensive police-state activity have drawn criticism from the BC and its strict anti-monarchical paradigm makes it the natural foil to the great courts of the West. On principle, it supports non-monarchist actors like Estoni and Belfras, but at the same time has no problem with the colonial empire concept.

f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.):

The Nominal Defense Force (NDF), the federal military organization is relatively small and typically has a standing force of 30,000 (or .01%). The NDF’s role is to support local militias in military training and operations and they have much more funding than any other military organization. The NDF also acts as the sole Air Defense Force, but has no naval operations, which are taken on by other branches. There are also nine Republican Guards (one for each Republic), which are a larger reserve force of 300,000 (or .1%). The largest military organization in the RRRR is the Nominal Police Militia, which fields a force of 500,000 (roughly .15%). The NPM is the federal law enforcement organization, but has been heavily militarized. In military operations, the NPM often acts as a support force for a parent Republican Guard or NDF unit. Collectively, the three military arms of the RRRR account for .26% of the population and has a total annual budget of $11 Billion.

g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures:

The highly centralized government is balanced with a highly decentralized and diverse population that is famously confrontational along ethnic and religious lines. Only through size is the RRRR able to achieve a semblance of power. The unfriendly terrain is a natural shield against foreign aggressors; much of the country becomes unnavigable during flood season. There is a thriving technological industry that had met the challenges of the dense vegetation, seasonal swamps, and highland vales in creative ways. Most of the country, however, is still engaged in subsistence agriculture despite many modernization efforts of the central government.

The incohesive military makes it difficult to launch any aggressive extraterritorial operations outside the miniscule NDF, but the heavy development of advanced law enforcement techniques makes them a formidable occupier. During the occupation of Moraine, one of Schicklgruber’s generals famously stated that “it is a miracle we could take it and an inevitability that we should hold it. While it claims to be a federation, the hierarchical relationships of the Republics implies that it is more akin to an empire and it faces all the military challenges of a multi-ethnic imperialist state.

h) If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so?

Decrease population density, instate an insane head of government, enter a losing cold war.

• Kettu — This application is weak and does not sufficiently portray the nation concept. Much more detail is required before I can begin to offer constructive criticism. I voice my opposition to this applicant.

• Rytande — I like the nation's concept, and enjoy the possibilities that could come with a nation with such an ethnic mix. I'd like to see some discussion and rejiggering of stats, since some of them seem a bit... ambitious. The population is a lil high for my liking, but I suppose the GDP per capita offsets it. The map size might need be be taken down many notches. Maybe you thought of 2 million and not 20? My support is dependent on how these stats change, and on how others in Ajax feel about it. If others are good with it, I'll put up no objection.

IC National information
a) Brief description of your nation:
Elerrína and her Empire is a product of centuries upon centuries of warfare, bloodshed, ethnic strife and conquest, from both foreign and domestic actors, that culminated in the necessity of establishing the Empire of Elerrína that formally united the Kingdom of Almárë, the four Principalities of the Haimlians and the southern Kingdom of the Tareldar all under a single banner; the first Emperor was the man who conquered the Principalities and negotiated the Imperial Establishment with the Kingdom of Almárë, the Tareldaran Araton Helyanwë, who himself was a close descendant of the Almárëan royal line. While Araton is established as the hero that formed the Empire in 1455, he was merely the final actor after centuries of hard work. (Will be expanded upon massively by both narrative driven threads and 'wiki' articles)

The Haimlians, called One Minds sometimes as both a derogatory insult, have long claimed historically that they are the oldest ethnicity within the Empire, at the point of it being the reason (among many) for their historical fierce rivalry with the Almárëans; they are factually an Indo-Caucasian race that originally developed out of a collection of tribes in the central and western parts of what is now Elerrína, modern archaeologists put their original homelands in the very western fringes of the Celuivren Province, migrating more to the central parts of modern day Elerrína and northernwards slightly. The very first bits of recorded history among the Elerrínan peoples comes from Haimlian scholars and manuscripts, and some of Elerrína's most notable classic thinkers, inventors and notable figures comes from what is jointly referred to the as "Haimlian Ascendancy", a period of time ranging from about 1,500 BC till about 100 AD. Around 100 AD, the Haimlians governmental structure, a priestly ruling caste that unofficially was a mere advisor to the monarchs staged a coup during a succession crisis and assumed full control, the caste being known as the Gwatha, instituted a number of heavy reforms devoted to ensuring all Haimlians were devout Attu followers, and purging those who thought otherwise. The Gwatha also began the rivalry with their northern neighbors, the Almárëans; however it is notable that the study of academical topics was developed heavily under their rule from 100 AD until 205 AD, when the several key figures of the caste were killed during a war with Almárëa and an uprising restored a monarchial rule. From 205 AD until 400 AD, the new monarchs, the Edwen Dynasty, sought to bring back the period of prosperity that the Ascendancy oversaw and was moderately successful until about 387 AD when the largest host of Almárëans in recorded history at that time began an invasion from the north; Haimlians had not faced their rivals in open warfare for some centuries and their tactics were quickly out-done, and overpowered. The war culminated with the sack of the ancient Haimlian capital of Kethwal, and was considered to have ended there. The Edwen Dynasty was killed off entirely during the Sack of Kethwal and their "Empire" fractured immensely, mostly between the few cities still standing who then began a series of wars to gain control of precious farm land or strategic lands. By 400 AD, power had been consolidated across Haimlian lands by six major cities (to be named later), and thus began the First Period of the Princes, as each of the cities was ruled over by a Prince who claimed some descent from the Ascendancy and sought to establish his rule and reunite the Haimlian peoples. While the cities as a form of unofficial policy never waged direct war against each other, over time, a number of them developed intense rivalries; the First Period was brought to an end when the city of X initiated a war of conquest against the city of Y, nearly destroying it entirely and purging their prince, and the ruling class. The Second Period lasted from approximately 700 AD till about 1200 AD, the longevity attributed to the fact that the four other cities were shocked by the annexation at the close of the First Period and began to work together to maintain a fragile balance between the cities. Around 797, the four cities formed a league to attack the fifth city and bring it into their fold; it succeeded after a brutal ten year war, and the four cities split the war prizes, and lands, among themselves. Around this time is also when the Almárëans became more organized, initiating more heavy hitting raids on frontier locations but retreating before a sizeable Haimlian force could be organized. The cities sought to put an end to the raids, and Almárëans, and began the War of Grace in 865, seeking to purge Almárëans from what is called the Faer Hinterlands (modern day Telyre Province), which would give them a sizeable buffer against any future Almárëan incursions. The War proved to be unpredictable for each side, as Haimlian hosts smashed the mainly mounted archer dominated Almárëan formations within the first three years, sweeping through the Hinterlands, but as they reached the more rocky terrains of the northern lands that the Almárëans called home, they proved unable to cope with the hit and run tactics employed against them; Haimlian generals refused to withdraw and eventually set up fortifications in the occupied Hinterlands, unable to break through the mountain passes that would lead them to Almárë, and unwilling to swallow pride, and the Almárëans were eager to let them sit. The war lasted until 922, when a heavily mixed Almárëans, employing both infantry and mounted forces and using completely different tactics, overwhelmed the Haimlians forts in the Hinterlands and they were forced to sue for peace; the war was disastrous on both sides, especially for Almárëa who had used the Hinterlands as a ample source of food that typically wouldn't grow in their northern homes, being cut off from it for decades led them to massive hunting purges across the northern lands, which caused widespread overhunting and a famine. The war is often cited as the source of many of the grievances that would be aired in the future against the kingdoms.

The Almárëans, or Sky People in English if literally translated, are an Ochran native ethnic group that originated in the very northern fringes of modern day Elerrína; modern research has had trouble placing a rough estimate of their original source due to the fact that the Almárëans were a tribal people for thousands of years, unlike their southern brothers in the Haimlians, they preferred to pass tales and history orally, rather then writing it down. As far as back records and evidence as been able to discover, the Almárëans were a collection of semi-nomadic tribes that moved as their hunting necessitated all across the northern ranges, steeps, valleys and grasslands that make modern day X, Y, and C Provinces. Core to their beliefs, to this day, the skill of horsemanship was considered paramount and even to modern times they remain some of the finest riders across the Empire, and Ochran. Their first entrance into recorded history is around 800 BC when Haimlian manuscripts and records mention raids on their frontier outposts by "groups of fierce and highly skilled mounted archers, who swoop in and out before a response can be mustered" (Source, Kwelan Temple Document C-800-431, IMAH). The Almárëans soon become aware of their apparent prowess in combat and over the centuries, the raids grew more and more frequent, and also expanded in scale and scope of the raids, culminating in the massive raid, some even call it an invasion, in 205 that saw them destroy dozens of settlements and cities, and even killing of enough members of the ruling Haimlian caste to trigger a social uprising that took over the government. At the time, the 205 AD raid was the largest ever mounted, notable because at the time it united 12 of the 18 Almárëan tribes; it was surpassed more then a century later when they sacked the ancient Haimlian city of Kethwal in 387 with 22 tribes, the names of each tribal chief and the King recorded precariously by a captured Attu monk who was commanded to scribe down the events by the Almárëan chieftains. For centuries, the Almárëan way of life remained undisturbed until the decades long War of Grace saw them lose hundreds of thousands to death, war, starvation, famine and disease; they had to change, and the societal transformation took centuries. Over the next three to four centuries, they left behind their semi-nomadic ways, using techniques learned from stolen Haimlian materials in their historic raids or in many cases, kidnapping Haimlain scholars, engineers and thinkers, they raised their own cities and new society to match the Haimlian Principalities and form a solid defense, and legacy, for their children to build upon.

The Tareldar, often called the Lost Ones, Eastern Rats as derogatory insults from the two "pure" natives of Elerrina, is the final major ethnicity in the Empire, and their an unique case and byproduct of the land's long, troubled past. The Tareldar are a byproduct of unions from Western discovers, explorers and traders, who sometimes staid within the empire, notably a series of Rezese explorers who were the first to discover the Empire's lands from a Western perspective, landing outside the Haimlian city of A in 1387. Peace was kept for a time at first, mostly in the interests at accessing the bizarre and new products of the Haimlian and Almárëan markets, but wars soon cropped up at the turn of the century. The power of the Principalities was failing, and Almárëans had suffered a disease that stroke down thousands across the kingdom, a disease many blamed upon the westerners. Furthermore, in 1412, a uprising of what are now termed proto-Tareldar occurred in the Haimlian city of Tu, who sought to close the city to foreigners and expel the children of the half-Western, half-Haimlian unions. The uprising caught the city off-guard and it succeeded, the proto-Tareldar seizing control of the city. Eventually, the descendant of this new state would be known across the Empire as he conquered the three remaining Principalities and forged a union with Almárëa, uniting the full Empire together for the first time in history and bringing a widespread peace.

In more modern times, the Empire has focused on building off of the internal peace and stability, attempting to build itself outwards, while also remaining mindful of Western interlopers; the quandary of putting aside the historical distrust, and the need for the West to expand and grow the Imperial economy as proved a treacherous path to navigate for the last seven decades of Imperial politicians, and Emperors.

b) What languages are spoken in your nation?: Almárëans speak Almárëa, Haimlians speak Haimlya, Tareldar speak Tyfa, which is a odd product of a combination of a number of Western languages, as well as the ones native to the Empire. The official language is Almárëa, but the population maintains a widespread understanding of at the very least, Almárëa and Haimlya, though Tyfa is notable for it's presence across the coast line inhabitants.
c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?: Almárëans, Haimlians, and the Tareldar are the three (two and a half according to pre-1965 Imperial Ministry reckoning) native ethnicities to the Empire and constitute approximately a 79% majority across the Empire, a number which has fallen heavily in recent years due to more and more migration from across the globe.
d) What are the major religions among your population?: Ialvora, the religion of the Almárëans is a polythestic faith that has come to dominate in modern times due to a large population growth among their ethnicity; Attu is the faith of the Haimlians which is a faith noted for it's complexities between numerous deities, sub-deities and the path to enlightenment, which is toted among the faithful as the only walk in life; among the Tareldar, a variety of religions are practiced, some follow both Ialvoran and Attu pantheons, while others will follow Western religions and the various sects there in. A sizeable atheist population has seen emergence in urban Haimlian populations since 1970.
e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: Elerrína is far too isolated from the Belisarian nations to have a massive impact on the geo-political role, and additionally due to historical interactions with Belisarian, Oxidentale and other "Western" powers, it has a very negative view on western interference in Ochran. An unofficial yet pursued policy of the White Throne has been to ensure that intervention from foreign powers in Ochran, and incidentally the Makiran Ocean as well as the Vespanian to an extended case, is kept limited. Recent governments have termed this to be defined as geo political influence only, allowing and attempting to expand the Imperial trade portfolio.
f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.):
The Imperial Military is separated down a traditional three branch line, the Imperial Army, the Imperial Navy, and the Imperial Elerrinan Air Force. The Emperor is the commander in chief, which means all formal declarations of war must originate with him/her and final authorization on all military actions must come from them, however the day to day running of the military is delegated to the Prime Minister, who in turn delegates it to the Minister of War, who oversees the Department of War. The senior commander for each branch, the High General, Admiral, Air General, respectively, sit on a joint council with the Minister of War and a single adviser appointed by the Crown who form the National Military Committee, which an issue policy decisions across the whole of the Imperial Military.

The Imperial Army is an all volunteer force and presently employs approximately 300,000 active duty soldiers who are stationed in military forts across the Empire; in addition to that, any person who is unemployed, and registered as such with the Imperial Government, for a period exceeding five years must do a 7 year service bid with the Army Reserves, which currently have 212,000 members. To keep it's 300,000 active duty soldiers organized, the IA adopted a very much Western approach of a Divisional based hierarchy; however, a key note of distinction is that the standard tactical unit within the IA is the regiment, which is a unit compromised of about 3,000 individuals, which consist of two battalions of 1,500 soldiers per battalion, which is then further broke down along a Company>Platoon>Band>Team scheme, though in cases of armored units, Platoon may be substituted with Troop. Typically, four regiments will be put under a single division, split with 2 regiments per brigade, for a total of 2 brigades per division. There exist in some cases, unique instances where the Regiments are not placed under a brigade and rather are directly overseen by a divisional level unit; though in modern times, this is only the case for the Guard regiments. Great care has been taken ever since the 17th and 18th centuries when the regimental system was adopted after seeing it's used in Oxiedentale and Belisarian armies to field the same "bond" that their regiments felt, and thus every one of the IA's regiments has decades, if not centuries, of battle experience, tradition and legacies. In the cases of the Army Reserves, the soldiers are typically organized similarly, however there exist no divisional level tactical units, they are for organizational purposes only and are not true field units like their counterparts in the active duty Army; regiments in the AR are typically old regiments from the active duty Army that were offered to be merged with another during a manpower reduction, or be used in the Reserves. Many regiments chose to go to Reserves rather then combining with another regiment.

The Imperial Navy, while not as old as the Army has become the new "favored child" in modern policy decisions, due to it being perceived as the first defense against any foreign interference, and as such such enjoys a larger share of the split military budget, and proposal decisions. The Navy currently maintains a fleet of approximately 74 active duty ships, ranging all up and down the spectrum in terms of size and capability, and also maintains a notable reserve flotilla, which is a group of ships that have been mothballed but not decommissioned, ready for quick reactivation in times of war or dire need. The Navy has traditionally adopted a much looser organizational scheme then it's counterparts in the Imperial Military, though in recent decades a more structured set of formations has been adopted. Typically, ships depending on their class, size or stationing would be organized into at the basic level a "Squadron". The most appropriate example is that destroyers are often placed into Destroyer Squadrons, which is typically a formation consisting of 2-4 destroyers, and possibly smaller 1-2 smaller vessels such as a frigate or corvette, though this case is often only in times of a far deployment or wide operational need and is not the norm. From there, they are typically organized under Divisions; for example, the 3rd Escort Division is compromised of the 2nd Cruiser Squadron, a formation consisting of two light cruisers, a heavy cruiser, and 2 corvettes, as well as the 9th and 11th Destroyer Squadrons. Larger formations, such as Carrier Division 1, typically will only consist of a more traditional, what others would call a carrier action group, type composition.

The Imperial Elerrian Air Force is the newest of the three branches, having existed for approximately six decades, and often competes with the Army for the second place at the table when it comes to funding and manpower allotments. Currently, the IEAF maintains a fleet of approximately x planes, including jet fighters, helicopters, strategic and tactical airlifters as well as a limited number of recon units, which are stationed across air bases scattered amongst the provinces. Aircraft within the IEAF are organized using a Western approach, with a Squadron being the most basic unit and it consists of 25 aircraft, which are split among 5 Flights. Traditionally, 2 Squadrons will be organized under a Group, and 2 Groups will traditionally be organized under a Wing; however, the IEAF will often change their organizational structure, and increase or decrease unit allotments under certain organizational levels to meet operational needs, or policy decisions.

g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: From the middle of the 20th century forward, the leading authorities and experts on national defense, the military and economics suggested and adopted a policy of "Thick Armor, Thin Ranks", which roughly equates to ensuring that the Imperial military enjoys having some of the best, most capable equipment and technology that would be feasible to field, but does not have a large manpower pool to use in case of a conflict. When first implemented, it was seen among IM circles that if war really broke out, a draft would be implemented and the manpower question would be solved but as the 20th century entered it's twilight phase, the Imperial economy diversified into getting away from purely heavy industry and into more education-required subjects, such as financial services and computer infrastructure; these industries required significant study and education before hand, and in 1980 employees of the industries, and a number of others, were exempted from any "government military manpower mandate" by a series of legislation aimed at reform. As such, the IM has ensured to increase training regime to account for it's otherwise lack of manpower and is wary of potentially exposing itself to any deficiency that would come from over-stretching themselves.
h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? Naturally

IC Geographical/resource
General lists, we don't expect you to know all the details before joining and getting a map place.
a) What does your nation excel in exporting: Due to recent endeavors of the government to both "modernize" internal economic output, the industries of Information Technology, software/hardware development and procurement, and to a limited extent, financial services as seen a large rise across the Empire. In addition to this, fishing industries enjoy large harvests along the coast lines and lumber industries, while reduced, still export in notable numbers.
b) What does your nation need to import?: Agriculture is perhaps the main trade import subject; since encouraging citizens to pursue careers in less traditional industries such as heavy industry and agriculture, the Empire saw a drop in food production empire wide from 1975 to 1992 of about 20%. As such, it as sought out the other nations of Ajax to increase food availability and diversity. In addition to this, raw minerals are heavily sought after, especially those not natively found within the Empire's borders.
c) What is your country self sufficient on?: Determining still, but most likely referencing the above.
d) What is your preferred location on the regional map? Far east in Ochran, I was envisioning somewhere around that inlet/bay that is directly north of Afalia on the Ochran proper. (Looks like a tiny boot)

Regional history
a) Were you recommended to Ajax?: I was informed about it by Ghant

6: Roleplay history
The Sword of Vershi[E2] - A thread covering a fictional Earth setting where a Dutch Empire invades the nation of Pakistan in a bid of imperialism
A Bold Grenadier[E2] - Same universe as above; the Dutch Empire's most strategic ally, the Banjamosi Empire, has had some doubts about their continued membership in the European Defense Pact. During the annual EDP summit in London, various factions in the Banjamosi Empire stage a coup, one that the Dutch are violently dragged into
The Twilight Sun and Midnight Horizon - Set in Rostil's universe; the Republic of Doriande is facing it's worse financial crisis in modern times, and the Government's controversial relocation efforts to solve this spark an uprising; an uprising that soon draws the attention of other Irkhallan nations
A Shroud of Flame[Rostil] - Sylvanea remains fractured, nearly a decade after it's succession crisis was forcefully solved by a foreign invasion. Loyalist elements continue to fight in the north, but how much longer can they hang on?
A Pale Winter [PT|Rostil] - Set before Ronan the Fierce united the Rhlonar to form the Kingdom of Sylvanea; can the fractured duchies survive an encounter with their ancient foe?

*A Note should be taken that in Rostil, we liberally merge fantasy and modern elements creating a rather unique universe and setting. Furthermore, in Earth 2, it is set on Earth but history has been completely rewritten and there are few similarities to our real life world.

General information
a) Time on Nationstates: Too Long. Probably around 5 years? Something insane.
b) Previous regions:

c) Other nations: This will be it. This is my now-main. I used to run by the name Yalos, or Yalottska

IC National information
a) Nation's IC name: The Empire of Daeseong
b) Nation's IC population: 136,000,000
c) Nation's IC GDP per capita: 12,500 (~1.7 trillion GDP) * EDIT: Stat changed approved by Latin from 11,600 to 12,500.
d) Nation's type of government: De jure Constitutional Parliamentary Monarchy, De facto Single Party Illiberal Democracy
e) Nation's head of state: Emperor Sang-Jun Choe
f) Nation's head of gov’t (if applicable): Hyun-Sook Kim, Hwarang Party

IC National information
a) Brief description of your nation:
b) What languages are spoken in your nation?: Dae (Korean, official), Latin (not official or national, but in vogue with oligarchs and political leaders)
c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?: Dae (Mainland Koreans), Namju (Jeju Island Koreans, essentially the same but with more seafaring culture), Jorchens (Manchus), Bulgars, various Turkic peoples
d) What are the major religions among your population?: Daeseong has been officially Protestant since the 19th century, though as with traditional Asian religious practice, it is practiced in a quite syncretic matter, with the local clergy merging Christian texts and theology with elements of Pungwoldo (traditional Korean Shamanism) and Seon Buddhism. To this end, Church attendance is not seen as a weekly occurrence (i.e. every Sunday) but rather on the whim of practitioners. In addition to Protestantism, Tengriism is very popular amongst the Altatic peoples of the steppes of the Empire.
e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: Daeseong spent the better part of the last century trying to catch up to Western powers. To this end, it conquered sizable empire with brute military force, embraced a Christian culture, and adopted western models of governance. Therefore, though Western Ajax has chosen to grow move towards a more progressive future, Daeseong still wants to spend more time in the sun. To this end, Daeseong might attempt to act as a foil to more liberal forces, especially in resisting pressure to liberalize in regards to human and civil rights. Daeseong also maintains sizable clandestine and conventional military forces, the former manifesting in a network of spies, arms dealers, and mercenary groups which it will attempt to achieve its political ends. Daeseong also maintains a large professional volunteer military force which it will use to quell internal dissent and potentially capitalize on political instability in bordering nations to acquire new territories or influence foreign political events.

f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.): The Royal Dae Royal Forces at Arms is a modern and sizable fighting force, intended to maintain order in the Empire and project force overland. With a long modern history, the Royal Army has a wealth of experienced officers and literature, and the Army has been instrumental in building the Empire as it stands today.

The Royal Dae Royal Forces at Arms, as it is known today, was founded in the early 19th century with the advise of foreign military officers, mercenaries and military missions alike. These officers transformed the semi-feudal armies sword and pike armies of old Daeseong into a modern, cohesive, very much western fighting force with a high focus on professionalism, meritocracy, and uniformity. There are four branches; the Royal Dae Army (Ground Forces), the Royal Fleet Service (Navy), the Royal Air Corps (Air Force), and the Righteous Army (Paramilitary / Armed Gendarmes).
g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: Though Daeseong maintains a fairly large military bolstered by a relatively youthful work force and bountiful natural resources, Daeseong faces a few major challenges. The most significant is increased separatist sentiment in the far Western territories, where ethnic Khuvgars (Bulgarians) and various nomadic Islamic tribes are fighting pitched insurgencies for independence.

Additionally, Daeseong is relatively vulnerable to the whims of the global market, being a resource driven economy. Though there is a considerable tech and industrial presence in Daeseong, the nation still relies heavily on exporting raw materials and food stuffs. Though these are incredibly valuable, they are also subject to drastic price shifts, which can cause no little trauma and shock in the Dae economy. On the subject of the economy, Daeseong's economic is also highly oligarchic and highly successful entrepreneurs are buffered by the ruling party, the yangban aristocracy, and the military elites.

Finally, though the Dae population has been rising, ethnic Dae are diminishing. The Empire is increasingly populated by immigrants and imperial subject peoples, causing no little concern in the imperial heartland.

h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? Probably GDP per capita or population.

IC Geographical/resource

c) What is your country self sufficient on?: Fishing, Timber, Textiles,

IC National information
a) Brief description of your nation:

((Still WIP--need to consult with region members))

The proto-Essalieyans were an offshoot of the Ghantish peoples, differing in some particulars of mythology, language, and features. They have the white, pale skin, and tall, lean builds of the Ghants, and while some do also share their brown or raven hair, many more have pale blonde, white, or even silvery hair, and rather than the primitive features that characterize the Ghantish, they are distinguished by a lean, hawkish, and predatory cast. Eye color is varied, though pale blue, green, and hazel are the most common shades, however, occasionally more exotic ones are also found among them.

As a people, they strive to be the very best at whatever they do, though well roundedness is considered more important that complete mastery of any individual field, with a common teaching being that a strong body without mental acuity produces only a brute, and that a powerful mind wastes away in a weak body
.
In the beginning there was nothing but Old Night, the force of primordial darkness and chaos personified by an entity known as the Lord of Night, and for countless epochs of time was the sum of everything that existed. The Father was the next one to come into existence, and finding it dark and empty created the world as a distraction, and the Mother to be a companion. For a long time, the three existed in something like harmony, but eventually, the Lord of Night grew jealous, and murdered the Father, and raped the Mother. What he didn't know, however, was the Mother had birthed a child before that, but hidden him away. She became pregnant from the Lord of Night as well, bearing a daughter, who had some of her Father's dark aspect, but her mother's goodness as well. Together, these two children banished the Lord of Night, With the Lord standing against him by day, and the Lady by night.

The Lord took on the aspect of the sun, and the Lady the moon to Guard against the Lord of Night, who nonetheless swore vengeance for his banishment, and taking the many dark and malevolent spirits he'd gathered around him, forged a race of demons, and sent them to plague the newly created humans the gods had made.

The wars with the demons lasted a very long time, and it was a war the proto-Essalieyans were losing, unable to match their might and guile. The Lord and Lady seeing this, stepped down from their celestial thrones, and walked among them, begetting children who were marked by their golden/yellow eyes, and promised them, as long as these "Godborn" led their people, that the civilization would prevail and endure. Under the leadership of these Godborn, the tide of the war changed, and eventually, the demons were defeated.

Up to this point, while disagreeing on some of the particulars, Essalieyan and Ghantish Mythology are remarkable similar. In the aftermath, of the Demon Wars, however, there came the Great Schism which forever divided the two peoples. During the fighting, a great hero arose among the Ghants, a man with purple eyes, said to be the son of a tribal woman, and a demon, or perhaps, even the Lord of Night himself. This man's name was Orin, and he became a king among the Ghantish people, and claimed the mantle of Godborn for himself, which caused a division among the two peoples.

While there were some who wanted to decide the matter by force of arms, the Godborn Ehlorondel who had risen to a position of leadership, refused to let it come to that, saying onto Orin, "We will not shed the blood of those we have sworn battle-oaths to, nor raise a blade against those so recently our comrades in arms, but with your false claims of divinity you have profaned the work of the gods, and we take our leave of thee. Until your people recant this blasphemy and make restitution to the Divines you have offended, Strife shall ever be your handmaiden, and follow your people even unto the end of days."

With that parting, Ehlorondel's people marched west, and and eventually embarked upon ships, which they took to the continent to the south. The particulars of the journey are lost to time and myth, which tells of struggles against undefeated demons, the Lord of Night's machinations, and includes many great heroes and heroines along with instances of magic and miracles, before they at last arrived in on the western coast of the continent, to the place they would settle.

Here they formed what would be called"The First Nation," giving it the name of Essalieyan, or "Brightness" in their language. The people were ruled over by their clan chiefs, which would, over time, become a nobility, who in turn swore fealty to the Godborn, who acted as mediators in disputes, and the arbiters of divine will. While the exact timeframe of this is rather murky and much disputed, archeological evidence does point to the presence of a thriving civilization in the area by circa 2000 BCE. For the next thousand years or so, the civilization expanded eastwards, in a time of growth and plenty, however, it was this very success, that led to the downfall of the First Nation.

As the borders expanded, the nobility became more and more independent, and located further away from the area directly controlled by the Godborn, so grew distant and detached from them, recognizing their spiritual authority, but not their temporal one. By around 950 BCE, the nation had become roughly divided in two, with the Godborn controlling a couple of provinces on the western coast, while the rest of Essalieyan became a series of independent states controlled by the local nobility, heralding "The Era of Ten Thousand Warlords," as the nobility soon fell into bickering with each other over territory, spawning countless petty wars. For something like four hundred years, this state of affairs continued, but finally, the people had enough, probably incensed by the increasing use of Ghantish mercenary armies, and appealed to their priests, who in turn appealed to the Godborn to do something.

Chief among them was Ellisar III, who had risen to prominence among the Godborn, who issued a proclamation, ordering the nobles to submit to Godborn authority, and unite under the banner of Essalieyan, or face reconquest. While some did exactly that, most refused, or simply ignored the edict, leading to "The Era of the New Dawn" as Essalieyan armies, led by the Godborn, and backed by thousands of priests of The Lord, began something akin to a crusade against the recalcitrant warlords, making it a bloody period, as the nation was reassembled one petty kingdom at a time. Stories say that none could stand against the Godborn on the field of battle, and also that the nobles were divided and warring against each other as well. The actuality of the matter, however, is that many Essalieyans were unwilling to fight on behalf of the nobles, leaving them dependent on imported mercenaries.

By about 200 BCE, the last of the independent noble states had fallen, and the nation was whole again, but the question of how it would be led and governed needed to be determined. not willing to repeat the mistakes of the First Nation, The Godborn would rule as emperors, and the Imperial family, but the nation would be run as a bureaucracy, administered by those who had proven themselves worthy of the task, by taking on tests to demonstrate their education and ability. Any Essalieyan, regardless of birth, could take the test, and if passing it, become part of the civil service, which ran the Empire. The old nobility would be done away with, and new titles issued to ranking bureaucrats by the Emperor, but those would only be for the duration they held their post or office, and could be rescinded by Imperial decree at any time, for any reason. Those honorably retiring from a government career would be allowed, depending on their rank, to either add the prefix Sul-meaning "Distinguished Servant," or Su-"Meritorious Servant" in front of their names, though these could never be passed down.

While the biggest problem at first, was being able to find enough qualified candidates for the positions, often meaning that members of the priesthood of The Three had to be drafted to fill the gaps, this soon led to academies being set up, and a general improvement the educational standards of the people to alleviate the problem.

b) What languages are spoken in your nation?:

Essalieyan: 100%

c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?:
It is officially 100% Essalieyan, and government policy has ensured this. The caveat is that that the government neither recognizes nor keeps track of ethnicity, rather anyone who submits to Imperial Law, and acknowledges the divinity of The Three, may call themselves Essalieyan. Foreigners wishing to become citizens must renounce other national ties, and likewise formally acknowledge the Three as divine protectors of the State. Also, those wishing to immigrate to Essalieyan, should at least be capable of passing the Civil Service exam, which is no small feat, either, as those who cannot, will be denied. A foreigner marrying an Essalieyan native, may be permitted to live in the nation, but will not have any rights as a citizen.
d) What are the major religions among your population?:

Worship of The Three--The Mother, The Lord, and The Lady are universal within the Empire .

e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?:
Essalieyan will offer opportunities to open up new markets for all the region's members, as they are anxious to establish economic relationships and sources for current and new technology. That said, it's not entirely an entrepreneurial paradise, as the population can be prickly, condescending, and generally wary of too much outside influence, so a fair bit of diplomacy will also be required to smooth over such arrangements. If they feel like they are being taken advantage of, or being treated as inferiors, they will seek other deals elsewhere.

f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.):

400,000 active, 300,000 reserves, divided into army, navy, and air force, with a primary mission of defending the homeland, and maintaining domestic security. The air force functions as the main long range power projection arm. The navy is only a coastal defense force.

g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures:

((Subject to change upon consultation with region members--heavy WIP))

Essalieyan's greatest strength isn't economic, or military, but derives from its structure and makeup, namely a homogeneous faith and culture, with few internal schisms. The Emperor derives legitimacy from direct descent from the gods, and in turn passes that legitimacy to the bureaucracy which runs the state. This system has endured for thousands of years, and has weathered many storms during that time period, often caused by ideas or inventions from elsewhere disrupting the fabric of society until tamed and mastered.

The military is both sizable, and well funded, and while a history of isolationism means they don't have some of the latest inventions, They aren't terribly behind in any particular area.(the possible exception being aerial stealth technology) The army is focused on territorial defense, with a secondary internal security role, while the air force is the power projection arm, with long range capability. The navy is the weakest branch, and also acts as a coast guard.

Economically, things are a bit more of a mixed bag. On one hand, the industrial sector is at least respectable, but Essalieyan is still a bit behind when it comes to the latest tech, and is still struggling to catch up in certain categories.
.

h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so?
Already lowered pop and GDP per capita.

Göaland!

Postby Goealand » Tue Oct 03, 2017 5:44 pm

General information
a) Time on Nationstates: About five years, although I've only really seriously been playing NS for a year and a half, with Mitland.
b) Previous regions:

Lands end

Cape of Good Hope

c) Other nations:

Mitland

Tanoso (I think this one ceased to exist)

IC National information
a) Nation's IC name: Göaland
b) Nation's IC population: 40 million (40,000,000)
c) Nation's IC GDP per capita: ~35k per annum (about 35,000)
d) Nation's type of government: Republic
e) Nation's head of state: President (President F.J. von Schießer)
f) Nation's head of gov’t (if applicable): N/A

IC National information
a) Brief description of your nation:

Göaland is an average sized nation with a nice, moderate, Mediterranean climate. Roughly forty five percent of the population lives in urban environments, the largest of which, Grünberg, also holds the seat of government. When visiting Göaland, friends are often annoyed with stories about their pop culture and complete lack of respect for personal space.

b) What languages are spoken in your nation?: Göalish (German, well, what I know of it anyway) is spoken by the majority, followed by a large English speaking minority.

c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?: The Göas make 77% of the population and the Angles take the remaining 23%. Due to religious persecution in the northern Germanic nations, various other Germanic peoples have migrated to Göaland, likely Göaland specifically because of the recent passing of the 12th Amendment, which guarantees religious freedom. While these Germanic people range anywhere from Danes to Saxons to Swedes, they are simply referred to as "Angles."

d) What are the major religions among your population?: Jewish, followed closely by various Christian sects from

e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: I see myself being like one of those Caribbean countries that Americans look at and go "That's a nice place" or "My family has roots there maybe I'll visit one day" but no one ever really does visit.

f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.): Göaland's armed forces consist of 200,000 men and women (0.5% of pop), which takes on the primary functions of preventing unauthorized crossings of the Göalish border, controlling of unauthorized drugs, and countering domestic terrorism. There are three branches: The National Guard, which is the primary carrier of the functions listed, the Air Force (which is not that impressive, imagine the Mexican air force), and the Navy.

g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: The government of Göaland traditionally addresses economic policy sooner in the term cycle before civil due to an overall national prioritization of the economy in recent decades. Göaland will always accept trade deals which maximize benefits for its citizens. Militarily, Göaland isn't the most powerful nation, however the constitution authorizes Göaland to raise the standing army from its peacetime limit of 0.5% to a wartime maximum of 20% in dire circumstances. The Göalish Parliament is considered by the Góalish to be amongst the most representative in the world, however polls including this question rarely seem to come up outside leave Göaland.

h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? Göaland's 20% emergency draft might be a little bit extreme, plus it's probably wrong to claim so much land in such dense continent at once.

IC Geographical/resource
General lists, we don't expect you to know all the details before joining and getting a map place.

a) What does your nation excel in exporting: Refined petroleum and small mechanical devices. Gas and clockwork are the industries, really.
b) What does your nation need to import?: Unrefined petroleum and raw materials, specifically lumber and steel.
c) What is your country self sufficient on?: Probably the entertainment industry. We produce our own shows and movies, enough to keep our people happy, and the Göalish don't really have high demand for foreign films.
d) What is your preferred location on the regional map?
I would love to have this nook right here:

c) Nation's IC GDP per capita: $42,017 USD (Can bring down if necessary)

e) Nation's head of state: The Polemarch - Nilos Simonodes.
f) Nation's head of gov’t (if applicable): Various Archons. (Leaders of the city states collaboratively rule)

IC National information
a) Brief description of your nation: Here we go!
Ancient Era: The ancient era would have been insignificant compared to other civilized populations around the world, and the peoples of the region that my nation would occupy would likely be subjugated by whatever empire reigned at the time. Small settlements would begin to form at the later part of this period, reaching into the thousands of people at around year zero.

Classical Era: Here, these cities approach the definition of city-states in the classical Greek sense, and begin to project their power on the areas around them. Some are successful, some fall, but oh boy, there's a whole lot of wars! Also at the time, these city states also gain cultural understanding and other types of knowledge from contacts with other areas around the region (Periclean?). As these contacts are being made, trade networks are also being developed, which becomes important in the medieval era.

Medieval Era: In this time, these city states are jockeying for economic primacy as their trade contacts and networks grow. The city states' geographical position and reputation allow them to fully take advantage of mercantile forces. City states begin to align with each other in the form of royal alliances or compacts. Republics and democracies from the Classical time period have largely been eliminated and brought under imperial/aristocratic control, with the exception of a few.

Early-Modern Era: As other countries around the world (Belisaria especially) go out to subjugate other populations and create colonial empires, the city states realize their fragility as a network of independent city states, and in an important document (TBD), they unite into the Alliance that we see today. It's not the same kind of organization, as the governing system and structure has been reformed numerous times to reflect the populations and the times concerning the city states. Mercantilism is still a prime goal for the Alliance, as they branch out into the world and try to insert themselves into trade agreements and maintain their status as trading powers.

Modern Era to 2000: This period is taken to be the mid 1800s to 2000, and is largely dependent on what happens in the world. I still need to brush up on Ajax's history from this period, but I don't envision the Alliance either taking stances in large military conflicts except for those that greatly harm their interests. It also depends on if there's some sort of clause in international agreements that respects other countries' (esp. belligerent ones) right to trade with non-involved parties. However, that's likely to not be the case, a la WWII. Regardless, the Alliance will struggle with social rights issues, economic redistribution, all the classic issues that face nations eventually.

After 2000: Currently, the Alliance is concerned with the welfare of its citizens, ensuring that they are protected, and striving for technological advancement, space exploration, and climate change issues. One could say that the government is at this time very progressive, although only for a certain subset of citizens. There are classes of citizens that are disregarded or excluded from the political process and other processes within the Alliance - something that other nations across the world have done away with (in terms of social structures). One important thing to note about the government of the Alliance - it's a confederation, so there will be some overarching qualities that unite the city states, but each city state is very different from other city states, and the governments of city states themselves can change wildly at any given time (provided that the changes still are in line with the unifying agreements of the Alliance.

b) What languages are spoken in your nation?: Currently, there is one standardized language across the city states - Alstaegos, descended from the merchant common tongue that united the city states.
c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?: The Alliance is overwhelmingly populated of Greek-types, although there have been immigrant waves of Slavic-types in recent times, as well as others throughout the world. Current census calculations put non-Greeks at 34% of the population.
d) What are the major religions among your population?: Historically, the city states have held their own gods and pantheons in the highest regard, but modern times have seen an influx of outside religions making their way into the cities. There is a seemingly-endless number of religions in the Alliance, and freedom of religion is guaranteed to all citizens.
e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: Historically, the Alliance would have been a maritime/mercantile power in the area, continuing into the age of imperialism much like the Dutch - but its power is largely limited to its own borders and possibly its neighbors as the city states strive to continue their standard of living and independence in this shrinking world.
f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.): Due to historical emphasis on marine superiority, the cities will all have some degree of sophistication in the naval arena. Some cities will have a considerable air force, and others will focus on their armies. In all, the branches will be organized and led by the Polemarch - the head of state. It can be said that the Alliance has enough power to defend itself and possibly project some level of power across the local seas.
g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: The only military strength of the nation would lie in its naval power, and even that is moderate, at best. Economically, I hope for it to be a powerhouse, although maybe not still quite up to the standard of other wealthy nations. Culturally, I'm not sure yet where it would fit internationally, although it could be fun to have emigrant populations abroad - make something out that later. Technologically, now that's where the real stuff is. I'd like to push the limits of technological advancement, Elon Musk style!
h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? I hope I wouldn't have to, since I've tried considering where I might have OP'd this nation - but if asked to, I would likely look at the economic sectors and see what it is that I would really prioritize, and ensure that the markets are compatible with the world. Additionally, I would look at historical feasibility, and make sure that my current vision is actually in line with regional history, and in places where it oversteps its bounds, I would draw it back.

a) What does your nation excel in exporting: Manufactured goods and international service industries. I also envision some sort of proficiency in the shipping industry as well, although that's dependent on what current powers are on that already.
b) What does your nation need to import?: Lots of things. Seriously. I can't begin to list them all. Food, raw material, whatever we don't make.
c) What is your country self sufficient on?: Finished goods, economic sectors, possibly some foodstuffs that grow well in the area. It depends on geography and how much area I'm able to allocate to that sort of thing.
d) What is your preferred location on the regional map?https://i.imgur.com/XOwwnBr.png - this is a revised proposition that has gained Malay's approval.

IC National information
a) Brief description of your nation: The Kingdom of Mutul is an Absolute Monarchy ruled by the Ajaw, Jasaw Chan K’awiil V of the Ilok’tab Dynasty. The Ilok’tab Dynasty is the last of a long series of dynasties, or kingdoms, sharing the glyph-name of “Mutul”, which indicate the royal and superior nature of the dynasty over the other existing kingdoms.

Mutul is a rising economy, known for its vast resources, numerous touristic locations, and a for most of its own urbanism, where complex cities centers reserved for the governments and religious duties, and vast sprawling neighborhoods linked together through highway and train rails.

Despite or because of its long history, with known records dating back to 1500 BC, the Mutul society is still shaken by the crisis it had to endure during the past three centuries. The liberalisation of the economy, the contacts with foreign cultures, and the need of reforms and reflexions on the nature of the Mutul’s society in the midst of a succession of demographic crisis led to numerous vigorous contestations of the Divine King’s role in society (the more moderates of the movements wishing for a Constitutional, Parliamentary Monarchy) or even of its legitimacy.

After this tumultous 19th and 20th century, the Divine Monarchy is now a rising economy again. Despite high disparity in its economical situation, between some extremely rich cities and ports and vast sways of lands still considered “backwards”, the current K’uhul Ajaw (Jasaw Chan K’awiil V) continue the work of his father and grandfather to modernise and to transform the kingdom into a serious player on the international scene, having to handle a very traditionalist society (in its religions and practices notably) and the needs of the nation. While threats to its very identity have past away, tensions remains as the centralized government and royalty might be the only element holding the country together, as proven by its long history of the rises and falls of many dynasties.

Agricutural settlements in today Mutul date back as far as 3000 BC, but the first real cities only appear between 1500 and 1000 BC. 13 cities from this period show the characteristics considered central to the proto-mulul civilisation, such as a distinct architectural style and the use of proto-glyphs.

By 1000, the city of Kaminyajulyu became to dominant power in the region as the capital of the Papol’lunyu Dynasty. While the First Dynasty had no real control over the others states, they all respected them and paid tribute every year to Kaminyajulyu. They also sent their sons to be educated as hostages in the royal palace, and their daugthers to marry into the Papol’lunyu clan. Sometimes, the other Ajaw even made the trave to Kaminyajulyu themselves to participate in important religious ceremonies, adding another level of submission to the main dynasty.

The Paol’lunyu legitimized their dominion by their control of water and the vast infrastructures they built. Kaminyajuylu was at the center of a vast web of canals and aqueducts, used to deliver waters to the main settlements, to irrigate the cultures and to transports merchandises and goods from one settlement to another. Cotton was grown as well as maize; palaeobotanical research also has identified annonas, avocados, cacao, black beans, palm nuts, plums, and sapodilla. Jades and obsidian were mined and wood exploited.

During the second half of the Paol’lunyu Dynasty, the era of the Mayan Culture extended and new clans and tribes started to pay tributes to the Ajaw of Kaminyajuylu and to adopt their traditions and customs. At least five new cities with vast and complex religious and administrative centers were built. Of these, Nakabe became the new point of gravity of the Mayan culture, while the Paol’lunyu became weaker. The Nakabetian Revolution of 400BC saw the overthrowing of the Paol’lunyu, the destruction of most of Kaminyajuylu and the division of the Paolunyian Mutul between three competiting “Mutals” : Nakabe, Takalik Abak, and Izapak, dominated by the Second, Third, and Fourth Dynasties respectively. The period of war and of cultural change, notably in the role of the K’uhul Ajaw, “Divine King”, with vast centralization efforts by all dynasties.

The victory of the Nakabe Mutul over Takalik Abak after 50 years of war lead to the secret alliance between Izapak and the Yajaw (vassal) of Yux, who grew unruly after the ever more tyrannical practices of his master the K’uhul Ajaw of Nakabe. The rebellion of Yux, helped by Izapak and the recently defeated vassals of Takalik Abak. Nakabe was destroyed and Yux became its own Mutul with its own Dynasty, the Fifth, who after enough marriages with the Fourth Dynasty re-united the Mayan cities under the rule of Yax Ehb' Xook, foundator of the Xook (also known as the Sixth) Dynasty, in 320 BC.

Despite its 50 years long war, the Mayan civilisation kept expanding through the use of mercenaries tribes that adopted mayan practices and cultures and introduced their own gods. Yax Ehb’ Xoox restored the old canals systems and even built roads, new temples and many monuments celebrating the victory of his ancestors and the submission of the Mutul to the gods. The water control systems rebuilt and expanded and the bureaucracy reformed, the Mutul knew an explosion in term of demography and the colonisation of new territories through many wars with other cultures that were defeated, destroyed or forced to pay a tribute to the K’uhul Ajaw. This great period of expansion led to the construction of a new capital in 100 AD, Tumbenkaah, as to keep a better control over the colonies and recently conquered tribes and cities.

This Xook Golden Age ended in 250 AD when the K’uhul Ajaw died and a conflict started between his sons to know who will succeed him. Mayanized tribes in the peripheral regions seceded from Tumbenkaah and created their own kingdom : the Cho’ok Mutul. The Cho’ok soon started to meddle in the business of its neighbors, and after marrying with one of the three pretenders daughters and numerous military victories against another, they officially entered the competition for the title of K’uhul Ajaw, a competition they will ultimately win, making the transition between the Sixth and the Seventh Dynasties in 300 AD.

The Seventh Dynasties did not last long, as its third K’uhul Ajaw (326 - 353 AD) moved the capital from Xeochimilco to the newly built Kalak’Muul, definitively abandoning the “barbarian” culture his ancestors had preserved. From there, the Eighth Dynasty will expand it’s borders further and further, and built new systems of canals, roads, and infrastructures for the bureaucracy and the religious caste. One of the most notable achievement of the Eighth Dynasty was the forced cultural unification, particularly of the peripheral and vassals states, of the Mutul. Many wars and rebellions took place at the border between Kalak’Muul and other cities and tribes judged “barbarics” and the otherwise steady territorial and cultural spread of the Mutul abruptly halted, in exchange for a greater homogeneity in its culture and its justice system.

The Eigtht Dynasty came to an end during the XIth century crisis when a combination of factors (epidemies, droughts, poor harvests, revolts…) led to the death of the last Cho’ok Ajaw and of his sons and inheritors, sparkling a civil war among its nephew and cousins.

Despite climatic conditions becoming more clement, the war didn’t stop. With the weakening of the Mutul military presence on its borders, most of its fortress and water control systems fell to the Q’umarkaj Kingdom (named after its capital), a tribal federation led by the Numa K’iche Dynasty. Using the political division of the Mutals, the Q‘umarkaj kingdom expanded quickly and its leader established itself as the new K’uhul Ajaw and numbered as the Tenth Dynasty (the Ninth Dynasty was a fairly minor one with one Ajaw to its name).

The Tenth, Eleven and Twelfth Dynasties (Numa K’iche, Tamub and Ilok’ab) quickly suceeded one another until the 15th Century. To this day, the Ilok’tab are still the ruling dynasty of the Mutul.

The Cho’ok dynasties opened a new golden age for the Mutul, notable in its architectures, new temples, roads, canals, and of scientifical progress notably in the field of mathematics (even if the knowledge of mathematics was the privilege of the religious caste), It also saw vast reforms of the bureaucratic and military systems, and the first contacts with foreigners during the early Ilok’tab dynasty introduced trades in the sources of wealth of the Mutul and allowed the construction of new ports, cities and temples.

The rise of the Trader-Warriors caste, resulting from the influx of trades from other continents, left the traditional aristocracy out of the new system. Cities, especially those with importants markets, started to be ruled by councils made of warriors, traders and priests. Some of these councils were recognized by the K’uhul Ajaw who gave them the statue of T’ube kaa’ch, “free cities”, and a certain level of independence.

This liberalisation of the Mutul society led to a schism taking place between the wealthy trading hubs and the rest of the kingdom. Traditionalists, Nationalists, Independentists and various sects regularly rebelled against the system, while the K’uhul Ajaw and the T’ube Kaa’ch; the Ajaw tried to limit the autonomy of the free cities, while the Warrior-caste, influenced by foreign concepts such as Liberalism and Socialism.

b) What languages are spoken in your nation?: Various Mayan dialects even if a “royal language” has been constructed to serves as a Lingua Franca for administrative and economical purpose.
c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?: Mayan peoples.
d) What are the major religions among your population?: Mayan Polytheism.
e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: That weirdos over there who make some sick chocolate.
f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.): The Mutal Royal Armed Forces. In 2016 comprised approximately 395,500 military personnel including the Army, Navy including the Royal Marine Corps, and the Air Force. Service is voluntary. Military spending in the national budget was widely estimated 3% of GDP in 2010 but is supplemented by revenue from many military-run businesses and foundations. The military personnel does not include members of law enforcement and paramilitary personnel such as the Royal Guard (Police) consisting of approximately 590,000+ personnel, Mobile Response Brigades of around 42,000+ armed personnel, the Civil Municipal police.

g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: the strength of the Mutul is in its potential, in the agriculture, the mining industry and arboriculture. It's military might would be decent but not impressive by any mean. If Mutul wanted to grow on the regional and international stages, it would be through diplomacy and economical means, notably its relatively cheap workforce, among many other advantages the country can offer.
h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? Reducing the size of the population, the economical development, the size of the claim, also change the history so the period of crisis of the XIX and XXth centuries leave the kingdom even more in the gutter...

e) Nation's head of state: President Calvin F. Murray
f) Nation's head of gov’t (if applicable):

IC National information
a) Brief description of your nation: The Kingdom of Deseret is a small nation occupying a temperate costal area. It has a varied terrain for its size, with costal land giving way to small mountains, and a desert beyond.

The government and the Mormon Church are intertwined, with the executive branch being headed by the Lord President of the Quorum. The legislative branch is split into two houses, the religious Council of Bishops and the more secular Senate of Freemen. While technically the Kingdom has no king (as the true King is seen to be Jesus Christ), the Lord President acts in a position of a monarch, being elected for life and ruling with moderated but expansive powers.

b) What languages are spoken in your nation?: English is the primary language, though the Deseretan script is favored over the Latin script.

c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?: Deseret has two major ethnic groups, the Lamanites along the coast and the Nephites beyond the mountains. Race tension is minimized through the intervention of the church and the shared religious beliefs between the two groups, though the Lamanites often hold more public offices and see larger salaries than their Nephite brothers.

d) What are the major religions among your population?: The official religion of the nation is Mormonism, which has evolved into the belief of Jesus' return during armageddon to take the throne as Eternal King of Zion and create a paradise on Earth out of the righteous peoples. This Kingdom would succeed the mortal Kingdom of Deseret, and as such Deseret is seen as the holy and promised land.

e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: Deseret would be a religious center to oppose the Catholic hegemony, especially as a heresy that some can consider not true Christianity anymore. Having a non-communist communalist society helps diversify the ideologies in the region.

f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.): Due to Deseret's precarious position as a religious state that sees aggression from other sects, the country has militarized to safeguard its own sovereignty. Its armed forces are made up of four branches: the Ground Force, Naval Force, Air Force, and National Reserve Force.

The active branches (Ground, Naval, Air) number around 150,000 personnel. However, all men between the age of 18 and 30 are mandated to enlist with the National Reserve Force as a defense measure for the nation. This results in a theoretical reserve force upwards of 1.6 million, though a practical reserve force would be significantly lower.

g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: Deseret is a strongly unified nation with a culture that seeks the greater good over the individual. Despite its smaller population, its military is fierce and loyal, perhaps to a fault. Even though it is not a great power, it has carved itself a place in the diplomatic table, and is willing to fight for what it believes.

h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? I would be willingly to reduce the size and power of the military, as well as cut back on the zealous devotion of Deseret’s people, if it seems too much.

6: Roleplay history
Snippet of roleplay:
Kirav gazed into Urcea’s eyes, contemplating the thoughts tempting him to do the unspeakable. Despite the December air whisping through the street, he could feel a warmth deep inside himself, growing with every passing moment he stood opposing this figure.

“Spelfy, please,” he let out a soft, mumbled plea, “I need you.”

Urcea mused over those words for a perceived eternity. Heku was at home, likely cooking a dinner to be shared among the family. Jakee would be with his friends, playing before being called in. While Urcea would never say his life was awful, there had been a yearning in his heart to explore something new. These thoughts were impure, Urcea knew it dearly, but he found himself amusing them ever more often. The monotony of the married life had taken its toll, especially to a mind as eager to go into the great yonder as his. Kirav's proposal, a year ago, would have been unspeakable. Today, however, things were different.

Kirav whimpered with desire, and Urcea accepted the reality of everything.

“I love you Kirav, and Heky can never stop us from being together,” Urcea said with a fiery passion that had unknowingly been spreading across his body. In a cloud of euphoria Urcea pressed his lips against Kirav’s, sealing his decision to time.

IC National information
a) Nation's IC name: Union of Syndicates
b) Nation's IC population: 73,918,000 (can be lowered)
c) Nation's IC GDP per capita: $38,454.95 (nominal), $38,095.91 (PPP)
d) Nation's type of government: Constitutionally socialist state under a directorial commonwealth of voluntarily associated communities
e) Nation's head of state: Chairwoman (of the 22nd Administrative Directorate) Ly Taalle (Futurist)
f) Nation's head of gov’t (if applicable): General Secretary (of the Trade Unions’ Congress) Atka Sadlyuvok (Traditionalist)

IC National information
a) Brief description of your nation: Apulasia, as it is still commonly referred to internationally, is a directorial confederation composed of voluntarily associated communes and communities organised into eleven compacts. The Union of Syndicates is a confederal polity, with compacts and more so their subsequent constituents experiencing substantial power in domestic policy. The Syndicate government, in theory, is treated firstly as a medium to solve conflict and disputes between the compacts, then secondly as a government body for the commonwealth as a whole. As with most theories, this failed in practice with the Syndicalist government being the foremost conduit of interaction for the Trade Unions' Congress and foreign states abroad and as a conduit for spreading the Socialist revolution.

The Union of Syndicates utilises a unique four-branched government: an executive branch, legislative, judicial, and finally a so-called "Economic Planning Commissariat", all operating under constitutionally mandated separation of powers. Despite this, the Trade Unions' Congress holds primacy and all government organisations and bodies draw upon it for legitimacy. The Trade Unions’ Congress members are elected through their respective trade union. It should be noted that the nation in itself is not a representative democracy, and instead operates under a syndicalist model at the Confederal level, with elements of direct democracy and electronic democracy evident at the compact and communal level. Congressional members serve two year terms, and may be re-elected a total of three times. The executive branch is composed of the Administrative Directorate (commonly referred simply as “Troika”), a 31 member directorial council of trade union representatives, technocrats, military advisers, and other personnel considered crucial to the day-to-day running of the nation. The Directorate Administratium is "led" by the Chairperson of the Troika, a position analogous to a Head of State. The Chairperson oversees the day-to-day running the Troika and by extension the nation. The position is elected by a unanimous consensus by the Administrative Directorate to a term of six-years with a one-term re-election limit. The nine member Revolutionary Court of the Union of Syndicates is the court of last resort and high court of the judiciary branch. The fourth branch is the Economic Planning Commissariat, made of 17 highly respected economic theorists and associated technocrats that manage the year-to-year running of the economy. In its endeavour to ensure the economic stability of the nation, the Economic Planning Commissariat makes use of [not!Project Cybersyn].

Apulasia is constitutionally a nonpartisan polity as the New Social Contract describes political parties as the antithesis to democracy. Despite attempts from the Administrative Directorate, political factions have formed. These factions serve as the unofficial political parties for the Union of Syndicates and can principally be broken into five main caucuses: Autonomists, Traditionalists, Vanguardists, Maximists, and Futurists. Autonomists advocate for a smaller, weaker central government, ultimately culminating with a self-proclaimed stateless society and ostensible “anarchy”. Traditionalists seek to maintain the status quo in the relationship between the central government and the compacts. Vanguardists advocate for greater state control over the compact for the purpose of exporting socialism abroad. Maximists, like Vanguardists, advocate for a larger and stronger central government. Unlike Vanguardists, however, Maximists are general pacifist and are advocates for a “socialism in one state.” Futurists are the newest political faction, and they advocate for an authoritarian, unitary state purged of all so-called counter revolutionary thought (i.e: the traditions remnant from pre-revolution Apulasia) with a completely rebuilt, modernist Apulak socialist culture. Despite the differences ideology, it’s nearly unanimously believed that a “plurality to Socialism” exists and that such plurality is the key to a successful World Revolution.

Economically, the nation is an oddity amongst the Socialists and so-called Socialist world. Officially operating under a syndicalist technocracy, the Union has been regarded as one of the most successful applications of corporatism and socialism within Ajax, with the domestic economy being supported mostly by worker cooperatives and syndicated corporations. The creation of the Economic Planning Commissariat (and to a lesser extent [not!Project Cybersyn]) has long been credited as saving the beleaguered, post-revolution nation from economic stagnation and gradual regression as seen in the socialist polities of Rietumimark and Estoni. Thanks to the Economic Planning Commissariat, the Apulak economy is considered post-industrial and characterised by strong government intervention, strong workers rights, workplace democracy, and worker cooperatives with a highly skilled labour force, low perceived corruption, and high levels of innovation. A strong primary sector still exists, as the large, fertile plains the country bears its name from provide a plethora of foodstuffs to the rest of Belisaria and the world. Environmentalist policies first-enacted by the Alvunat administration has only increased this, as Apulak-grown organic foods are commonplace in many of the world’s supermarkets.

Apulak culture can best be described as cosmopolitan, modernist, and progressivist. This culture has been fostered under the last three Administrative Directorates, which had been led by Futurist Chairpersons. Egalitarianism, utility, and progress are common themes within Apulak culture. Libertarian principles enshrined in the New Social Contract give access to basic and universal human rights to the Syndicate citizenry, and such rights are held sacrosanct by the populace. Apulak culture is notoriously anti-traditionalism. Monarchism, conservatism, and other political and socially right ideologies and views have been warped by the Administrative Directorate as being the antithesis of the New Social Contract and together threaten the very existence of the Union of Syndicates.

b) What languages are spoken in your nation?: A variety of Slavic languages and dialects (plus whatever my neighbours speak). English is (non ironically) used as the lingua franca for the nation, although this is starting to be superseded by Interslavic.
c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?: Various flavours of Slavs, Sibero-Ugric peoples, and Eskimo-Aleut peoples.
d) What are the major religions among your population?: The government officially does not take census for religions (translate this as “I’m too lazy right now to make constructed languages because I’d like to avoid using Real Life religions as I believe it requires too much from real life events to develop near identical to real life)
e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: I’m not entirely sure. Somebody has to have the Wholefoods market and Green Peace group covered I suppose.
f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.): Officially, Apulasia maintains three separate militaries: the Unified Syndicate Defence Force, the People’s Guard Army of the Commonwealth, and a [To Be Named Militia]. The Unified Syndicate Defence Force (USDF) is the only branch fully under the Administrative Directorate, as the People’s Guard Army is under the control of the Trade Unions’ Congress and the [To Be Named Militia] under the jurisdiction of compact governments. (Largely will be work in progress as I try to solve issues with this structure so that I don’t Yugoslav myself, but I guess there’s an RP idea)
g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: The Union of Syndicates is ostensibly the most prosperous of the socialist nations in Ajax. Perceived obligations to its fellow socialist allies have caused Apulasia to invest heavily into its fellow socialist states. In addition to this paternalistic outlook, the nation also provides funding to foreign socialist parties, though the results of such is miniscule at best. What holds Alemannia back from being a true Great Power is the lack of any nuclear weaponry (the development of such was symbolically prohibited following whenever nukes we developed) and sea access. Economically, the country has a post-industrial economy but retains a substantial primary sector. The Economic Planning Commissariat transformed the beleaguered, post-war Union of Syndicates into an agricultural giant. Environmentalist policies have only increased this as Alemannic cooperative farms provide a multitude of organic foodstuffs to the rest of the continent and Ajax as a whole.
h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? The nominal and PPP GDPs could be lower by pushing the revolution to the 20th century. The claim as a whole could also be shrunk (as it stands right now, the claim currently presented in this application is one where I definitely feel the land will never be claimed). The economy could also be less diversified and more reliant on a single sector. The population could be lowered as well but I personally don’t feel it as necessary.

a) Brief description of your nation: New Havre is a fairly modern country founded in the 1700s when pilgrims from other regions of the world banded together and went west, in search of a land where multiple types of people could coexist and where some of the conflicts of the past would be buried. They settled further north than others did, setting up in an area of forests and hills and absorbing most of the native population in the process. Still, there was a split between the English and the Lynnoiasian speakers, with the Lynnoiasian speaking peoples moving into the northwest of the country and the east being settled by the Dane travelers. The country was founded on a few values; liberty, self determination, and industry. The economy grew as the new nation took advantage of its natural resources, but it still suffered threats to its unity. Lynnoiasian race riots happened on a few occasions. The Northwest War in the early 1900s threatened to split the east and west along a racial and language line. Recessions in the 30s and 80s rocked the nation, as did the major divide between the more liberal and progressive east and the very much socially conservative northwest. Still, the country has stood the test of time, and has become firmly first world. A status that didn't always come easily.

e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: A first world nation that has good industry and is fairly developed. It's still a country with large divides internally, however. Both of the political kind and the socioeconomic kind. It's not the kind of nation that would be able to get involved in every RP, but it should provide some interesting stories at the very least because of its structure.
f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.): The main stated goal of the Havrecois Armed Forces is the defense of the country itself, but as a somewhat wealthy first world country, there's also a focus on international security and aiding allies in certain operations. Havrecois soldiers are no stranger to being deployed around the world as part of larger operations involving other nations.
g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: The country has a strong economy, but isn't in the best state socioeconomically. There's tension between the three ethnic groups, particularly between the Danes and the Lynnoiasians. This animosity has existed since the founding of the country, caused one full blown war, and is at a boiling point currently. Militarily, the HAF meets first world standards but may have a hard time operation abroad with a populace that has more liberal views, including being against military conflict. There's also a large religious divide between the secular east and the very Christian Northwest, with the middle being somewhere in between.
h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? I would most likely remove the refined products part from the economy and focus on natural gas, timber, and other natural resources.

IC National information
a) Brief description of your nation:

The Szeritzi were originally split in countless pagan tribal petty kingdoms and had inhabited the area now known as Szeritzil for times immemorable. The Szeritzi were a warlike people, often fighting each other and raiding their, more civilized, neighbours. It was not until (early) medieval times that foreign crusaders forcibly converted the Szeritzi states and united them into the Kingdom of the Szeritzi which was ruled by one of the crusaders.

The medieval times saw Szeritzil (as it now became known) in turmoil with large parts being occupied by foreign nations and a lot of civil wars between the powerful nobility and the dominant monastic orders which were eventually expelled. Eventually, at the closing of the medieval era, the Kingdom finally collapsed and was divided between petty noble states and areas under foreign occupation.

In early modern times the Aristocracy finally understood the necessity to unite against foreign threats and banded together into the Noble Confederacy of Szeritzil which included most of modern Szeritzil. However, as the divided leadership of the Confederacy proved ineffective they decided to elect one of the as Duke of all Szeritzil to rule as first among equals and defend borders against foreign aggression. After just seventy years, however, the Monarchy became hereditary under the control of the Vlarzik Dynasty.

Though the borders kept changing over the centuries they settled in modern times at the Skerpaty mountain range currently surrounding modern Szeritzil. The internal situation remained the same over time as well though it was far from stable as the local aristocracy kept infighting, using its extensive power to keep the Crown from centralizing the nation. Eventually the noble class split into a land nobility which owned huge estates and which kept to the 'old ways' whereas many of the lower aristocrats went to the cities and either joined the military or became businessmen, creating a class known as the Merchant or Court Nobility.

Yet this all changed in 1970 when the people within the cities rose up in rebellion, demanding the end of the Aristocratic Autocracy that was Szeritzil. However, the reactionary Duke, Dobrokar II, refused any compromise with the 'serfs' and mobilized the army which resulted in a bloody three years civil war which raged on until Dobrokar was killed in battle in 1973 after which his successor Lörrek was willing to negotiate with the rebels. The treaty resulted in the creation of a national Parliament and effectively broke the power of the landed Aristocracy by removing the right to hereditary own settlements as well as the right to field 'household guards' larger than one hundred men. It also saw the rise of women as equals to men and the end of neoserfdom.

Following the Civil War Szeritzil uickly modernized but tensions remain with the nobility still holding much wealth political power, especially by the fact that they still control much land, many corporations and a large part of the military. At the same time recent economic backlashes caused unrest, resulting in much discontent with the current, democratic and corrupt, government.

b) What languages are spoken in your nation?: Szeritzi (Somewhat based on Hungarian I'll be working on it once I've got some more linguistic expertise)
c) What ethnic groups are present in your nation?: Szeritzi, Zorfashazi Jews and minorities from neighbouring nations
d) What are the major religions among your population?: Catholicism with small jewish and other christian minorities
e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?: Szeritzil would be an anti communist nation which would support monarchist and reactionary governments around the world. It would also strive to retain the status quo. However, because of the internal struggles and the relative weakness of the nation I'd also regard it as a playground for other nations who might want to back one of the factions within the nation in order to pull Szeritzil within their sphere of influence.
f) Briefly describe your nation’s military (including size, role, branches, etc.):
I'd imagined Szeritzil to be a militaristic nation which would mean there would be a large number of soldiers (350-500.000 if that would be reasonable). However, despite this the army would be poorly equipped and would be lacking modern equipment. Most soldiers, despite being decently trained, would have a limited morale and professionality. Furthermore the air force, and if not landlocked, the navy would be very weak, receiving very limited resources and manpower. They would also lack modern equipment. Finally the officers would be well trained and would, combined with the presence of multiple elite units like the Palace Guard, make kind of a counterweight to the lack of equipment, unity and morale.
The (right-wing oriented) Army would also be dominated by the nobility, making it unreliable to the, democratic, national government.
g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation (esp. military & economic) and how they may affect existing regional power structures: Due to Szeritzil's military and economic weakness as well as the internal instability I would not expect Szeritzil to affect the current regional balance of power in any major way.
h)If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so? Probably by lowering the amount of soldiers, the effectiveness of the officers and the further weakening of the economy.
