SLAVE LABOUR IN SOUTH COIUS

Image
A note stowed away in a box
Ashcombe, Estmere - Everyone knows what it's like to have a delivery delayed over the weekend. It's troublesome, you paid for that express shipping only to have it held up. When you bought your new television at a steal from the international market, you couldn't wait to get it and try out the big screen, the high-definition. We've all been there. But there is one place we haven't been: the factories that produce such merchandise on the cheap.

When one woman, whose name shall not be published at her request for the sake of privacy, opened the box for her new LD™ television from LotusDreamsLTD, a corporation based out of the landlocked Grand Principality of Phula, she says a hand-written note fell out. Written in plain and clear Estmerish, she tells us that the note detailed the horrific working conditions of the factory the electronic device was manufactured in. The note claims that prisoners are being shuttled from nearby institutions and forced to work fourteen hours per day with no lunch break for less than one Euclo per hour.

The note goes on to state other conditions that the prisoners must endure. They are not allowed to talk or look at other prisoners, or else they will be beaten with batons. Armed guards loom over them constantly while they work, ready to pounce like predators if they spot any violations of their strict rules. The factories are poorly ventilated, and with large crowds, plenty of active machinery, and Phula's tropical location, lends itself to a dangerous environment where everyone is at risk of overheating. The humid air does little to help this, and only warm drinks are served to the prisoners.

The Phulese government has remained entirely silent on the matter, and has taken no action in recent years to try to curb abuses such a this. Their silence has only enabled the practice, and we in Euclea have been too compliant, never asking where our products come from. While accusations of unfair or unfree labour have been made against Coian industry for years, these have often been written off as being politically motivated and ignored in the broader conversations that mainstream society is having. Now, though, the conversation seems to be reemerging.

Conservative sectors have long bemoaned the over-reliance on foreign industry as a flaw of the modern world. They have promoted buying locally, where fair and free labour is assured, and where the money will be kept within the domestic economy. The 'buy local' campaign promotes self-reliance and keeping wealth in our economy rather than sending it abroad, both of which are seen as very favorable conditions by economists. With the note's reveal, this campaign has risen like a phoenix to explain the benefits of buying domestic products even at an increased price.

We all await the Phulese government's response to the unveiling of the note, but not many are hopeful that it will be handled responsibly. Being an autocratic government like most of Coius, the Euclean opinion seems to be that the Phulese will try to hide, deny, or otherwise obfuscate, rather than conducting a legitimate investigation into the corporate practices of their nation. Only time will tell for sure, but few are holding their breath with regards to this scandal. We will keep readers informed when the official response is released, and what it means for the future of trade between South Coius and Euclea.

BREAKING: Zorisani Agitators Deface Mathran Consulate!

Image

Sirand, Mathrabumi- In the Autonomous Xiaodongese region of Jindao extremist youths with what experts believe are ties to the Zorsani security establishment have defaced a national consulate of Mathrabumi. Coming in at 2:00 in local time in Jindao the dissident and terroristic "Mathran Trade Union League", an organization that works with illegal trade unions attempting to crack the unity of the Mathran nation.

The Jindao government due to an outdated colonial-era treaty has so far restrained itself from taking legal action past an extradition to Mathrabumi, even as this group is listed as a terror organization. The wrote such vile things on the consulate as "Ganapuli out!". The Foreign Ministry has released a statement condemning these agitators.

While we respect the freedoms and human rights enshrined in Jindao, such proactive activities should not be tolerated. The organization did not simply engage in lawful peaceful protest but vandalized property of our nation. They caused reckless and unnecessary damage, and possibly endangered many of our officials in the building. We ask that the Jindao government cooperates with our own government agencies on bringing these vandals to justice, and takes proper action against such groups. We also ask other nations to not get involved in these protests.

Some Mathran experts allege that Zorsan was behind the later protests, busing in agitators in order to have the expat community come out against Mathrabumi. The government hasn't officially commented on this claim but most major media outlets have brought these experts claim forward. Regardless any nation should not interfere in Mathran affairs, sow disunity in the country, or place Mathran property and officials in danger.

Supreme Custodian calls for water rationing and calm as protests continue

Image
Supreme Custodian Amoozgan Ali Reyshahri with First Minister Farzad Akbari during his address.
Zahedan, Union Capital Territory- Supreme Custodian Amoozgar Ali Reyshahri has denounced elements who “seek to use the thirst for water for their own gains.” The leader of the Irfanic faith warned that “selfish pursuits through others suffering will tear about our community.” He made the comments in a address to seminary students alongside First Minister Farzad Akbari.

Addressing students at the Amoozgar Hamid Esmaeili hall in Zahedan, the Supreme Custodian praises the Union Government for its response to the water shortages in southern Zorasan.

“I praise the swift and efficient response of the government; it is right to seek solutions to society’s troubles. The government has done well” he said.

The Supreme Custodian also called for solidarity among the populace, “we must not give way to complacency or selfish senses of comfort. We must sympathise with our brothers and sisters in the south, even if we have water aplenty. I urge all peoples of Zorasan to offer prayers for those of the desert south.”

He also backed calls for water rationing in the north, “We hear calls from some circles for rationing of water or more careful use in the north, I support this. If the north’s restrained use of water can alleviate the suffering of our brethren in the south then that is a must, let it be an act of the Lesser Intercession. Sacrifice for the less fortunate is our Irfanic duty, it is the demand of God and the south is less fortunate at this time.”

The Supreme Custodian’s Household announced on twitter that he had ordered all fountains and lawns to go without water until the crisis in the south was resolved.

“Amoozgar Ali Reyshahri, our blessed Supreme Custodian has ordered all fountains and lawns of the Niavaran Residence go without water until the crisis in the southern regions of the Union is resolved. He urges all citizens to restrain usage in name of the Lesser Intercession.”

The Lesser Intercession is the Irfanic religious tradition of giving to the less fortunate, often at the expense of the giver. It is an integral act in the pursuit of salvation.

Quoting the Niayesh, the Supreme Custodian said, “and did the caravan of the prophet cross the great sand sea, not as a column of pieces but as a singular body and mind. And through this did they reach the lands of absolution.”

The highest authority in the Irfanic faith also led the meeting in prayer for the south, urging God to “deliver respite from the scorching thirst and worry.”

There has been major progress reported across Samrin, with temporary pipelines being built to distribute water, while several systems used to provide water to industry have been turned off, increasing capacity for private use.

Protests have also continued for second week across the south, however. A further 80 people were arrested over the weekend for disturbances in Saravan and Karadagh.

The ministry of justice has warned that it would not tolerate abuses or hijackings of protests for “anti-system motivations.” Its own intervention came after protesters in southern Pardaran began chanting against corruption and what they called “tyranny and oppression.”

The Union Police Service has detained several people in Zahedan and Mazdavand after they called for anti-system protests on social media.

During his address, the Supreme Custodian also took to praising the protests gripping Mathratown in Jindao.

“Even as we seek to calm our own waters, beyond, we see the victims of injustice and oppression make clear their displeasure. In Jindao, the victims of Marathi atrocities and violence protest against that country’s insidious leadership. As we hear the voices of our citizens, we too hear the tearful shouts of Mathrabumi’s victims and we stand with them, pray for them” he said.

PRIME MINISTER ADDRESSES OVERSEAS CONCERNS
A scandal has erupted the nation internationally, here's what the government has to say

SHAREImage Image Image Image

Prime Minister Kujang Itcham speaks before an assembled crowd to address the accusations leveled by Euclean press

PUSHKARMA, PHULA - Earlier today, a note was allegedly found hiding in the packaging of a television set purchased from the respectable LotusDreamsLTD company. The author of the article, one Carl Benjamin, was eager to use this incident to allege that Phula was responsible for the use of unregulated slave labor, forcing state prisoners to work under brutal conditions with little to no compensation. Hasty accusations aside, the original story seemed highly misinformed and doesn't understand the Phuli penal system well. Moreover, its accusatory ending notes show an implicit bias within the author. Prime Minister Itcham had the following to say:

"We are gathered here to discuss the scandal that has engulfed our nation. Earlier today, the Estmerish press led accusations against our country that were based in falsehoods and unsubstantiated claims. Prisons in Phula are very heavily regulated with regards to all activities and their treatment of prisoners, and Mr. CEO Kunsang is a very respectable man with an honorable reputation. He does not have the character nor the means to conduct an organized slavery campaign within this country, and especially not without the government's knowledge. All the same, we have conducted an internal investigation, and have found no systematic violations of our codes, guidelines, and regulations going on within factories."

There you have it folks. As anyone could tell you, there's nothing wrong going on here. Given the investigation's results, one ust wonder whether or not the procured note was indeed genuine as claimed, or whether or not it was merely propaganda. After all, there are a great many suspicious things that simply do not line up. The first thing to note is that the note is written in perfect Estmerish. This raises the question of what low-brow prisoner working in a factory would have such a fluent grasp on the language? While it might be possible, it seems unlikely. Furthermore, there seems to be a misunderstanding of climate. While Phula is tropical and quite humid, the elevation on which much of the country rests means that the temperatures are often much more mild than in other places. One must suspect factory workers could even get cold and be thankful for the tea they're given.

The note also seems to be misinformed about the Phuli penal process. While sometimes considered harsh compared to Euclean standards, the Phuli process has logic on its side. Prisoners often have their days given order. Regimented schedules help to keep them productive, as well as fit physically, mentally, and spiritually. It also prevents escape attempts and riots, by keeping them occupied, preventing boredom, the formation of gangs, collusion between inmates, and violence between inmates. All of their needs, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual, are given assigned time and all due consideration. Even in their meals, the health benefits of tea are granted instead of plain, bland water, and balanced meals are given instead of the gross mush that inmates get elsewhere. All this balance and order makes them productive citizens upon their release, giving them all the skills they need to succeed in life. When an adult is dependent and cannot function in society, they must be treated like a child, nurtured and guided until they can stand on their own. This is the ultimate goal of rehabilitation, is it not?

It seems to us in Pushkarma that Mr. Benjamin is simply pushing a nationalist, nativist narrative, using rhetoric targeting us as a convenient example. He fails to mention alleged abuses or poor working conditions in Estmere or, indeed, in the whole of Euclea. The affordable, high-quality merchandise produced by Phula and shipped abroad is the very same that we use in our own nation. Don't you think that, if such abuses were going on, we'd be the first to jump at it? We'd be the first to protest, the first to be sickened and push for change? There are no abuses, this scandal is fabricated. The note is almost certainly forged, and Mr. Benjamin has no integrity pushing his stance as legitimate journalism.

For you faithful readers, check out the fashion tips on page 42. They were written by the most stylish girl I know, you can't go wrong. This is Mohan, signing off.

The Tribune government has announced its widest ranging education reforms to date, with Federal Minister Giulio Schiatarella revealing plans to the Chamber of Representatives. The plans include the replacement of Religious Studies with Catholic Catechism and History, Etrurian-focused topics for history, literature and art and changes to Social Studies curriculum. Other plans include the introduction of federally funded scholarships for children of service men and women, law enforcement and single parents. Further plans to combat the “politicisation of the classroom” were also announced.

Federal Minister Schiatarella addressed the Chamber of Representatives in a session dedicated to education reform, though few in the Senate were aware of the extensive nature of changes to the curriculum or the introduction of new scholarships.

He told lawmakers, “in coming months the Federal government will begin implementing legislation aimed at dramatically overhauling the national curriculum, provisions for federal scholarships and new efforts to combat the politicisation of the classroom. Through these reforms, we will further build upon earlier work, to make Etrurian education wholesome, productive and high in standard.”

He further said, “while changes are implemented, I can confirm that the Summer Budget will also carry improvements to the pension schemes for long-term educators, as well as an above-inflation pay rise for educators and 3% increase to the federal budget for education. This government is dedicated to the betterment of our children’s’ futures.”

The Federal Ministry released detailed plans to lawmakers and the press prior to the Minister’s address. Among the reforms are:

  • Replacement of Religious Studies with a new course, Catholic Catechism and History. The new course will focus on the Church’s catechism and the history of the Catholic faith. The course, will “aid in establishing in children, the values, principles and traditions of the Mother Church.”
  • Major changes to the History curriculum. History at all levels below university will be changed to be Etruria-centric, ending studies in foreign events or foreign countries. The primary focuses will be ancient Solaria, Renaissance Etruria, Poveglia, Etrurian Unification, the First Etrurian Revolution, the Great War, the Solarian War and Modern Etrurian Political History.
  • Major changes to literature and art at all levels below university. The changes will see a restored focus on Etrurian artistic works, including those from Renaissance and modern periods. For the first time, Carinthian and Novalian artists and writers will be equally represented alongside Vespasian ones. The aim is to promote youthful awareness of “Etruria’s distinct cultural dominance of the arts throughout history.”
  • Social Studies will also see major course changes. The mandatory course will see a removal of topics deemed too “useless and unproductive to career building.” These include lessons on multiculturalism, “minority pluralism”, which teaches second stage students how to treat ethnic minorities and LGBT+ and lessons on sexual health and safety, which the document dubs “celebrating sexualisation.”
  • New federal scholarships will be introduced to the children of serving military personnel, law enforcement and single-parent families who earn below ₣35,000 a year. These scholarships will be open to all and no longer delimited by university ranking. Current support grants for students from low-wage families will increase by ₣1,531.
  • Students studying engineering, IT, technology design, science and medicine will see their tuition fees cut in half. The document states that the cut will aim to see “new generations of Etrurian experts emerge to lead the nation’s economic development and the establishment of Etruria as a truly developed economic powerhouse.”
  • A new Work Experience and Graduate Scheme law will be introduced prohibiting employers from falsely advertising entry-level jobs as requiring no experience, if it is needed. The law will require all jobs advertised as entry-level to be legitimate, companies that falsely advertise or recruitment agencies that do so to boost applicant numbers will face fines of up to ₣90,000.
  • New measures will be introduced to combat “classroom politicisation”, including new measurements for the Federal Education Standards Authority. Teachers will no longer be allowed to push articles from newspapers or websites, criticise politicians in class or promote political activism, or certain political parties. The document argued, “through these new measures, classrooms will remain free of politics and politically neutral to enable students to develop into their own minds independently.” This measure follows the sacking of three teachers who posted a video of a full class criticising the Tribune Government as “neo-functionalist and racist.”

The reforms were immediately attacked by the centrist opposition, with numerous Citizens’ Representatives denouncing it as “reactionary and authoritarian.” Interim Leader of the Citizens’ Alliance, Boris Ivic accused the government of trying to turn the education system into a “brainwashing machine.” Democratic Alternative also denounced the reforms as “hideously twisted toward a far-right obsession.”

Federal Minister Schiatarelli retorted that the “criticism heard today are stale as are they incorrect. No government since the War has sought to turn education into a viable means of building a better life. Instead, the parties opposite would rather turn our education system into a mind-numbing liberal nightmare, where identity politics, progressive nonsense is placed above real-life skills and career-making subjects that benefit the nation, rather than fuelling misplaced moral superiority.”

This is the first major test for Federal Minister Schiatarella, who succeeded Elisabetta Riolo last year, after she resigned in protest against the government's decision to ban schools from providing students contraception advice.

The reforms have been classified as Federal Mandates and will be mandatory for the constituent states to enforce on August 1st.

13 FASHION TIPS TO BLOW YOUR MIND
In a world where Euclea dominates beauty, Coian girls need to know they count too

SHAREImage Image Image Image
Anupa Basnet ( @MKFlopot )
13 01 2018 11:30 AM | Pushkarma, Phula

Image
Grand Princess Avani models Taisei items

PUSHKARMA, PHULA - The world is a big place. Sometimes a difficult, or a scary place. In this world of ours, seeming to be ever-more dominated by Euclean fashion magazines, Euclean movie starlets, Euclean makeup brands, there's something we need to acknowledge here and now. We here at Flowerpot stand with the Coian ladies, and we want to make it absolutely clear that we stand with Coian women in their fight for international recognition. We can be every bit as beautiful as Eucleans, beauty is part of the our cultures, it has been for thousands of years. In the land of Ten Thousand Lotus, each girl is a bloom.

Ladies, whether you're reading this at home, afar, with a physical copy, or online, Phuli or Senrian, here are our 13 fashion tips to make sure you can shine like the moon and show the world the beauty that lies in the heart of Coius.

1
Image
Traditional colors still shine

South Coius has a longstanding tradition regarding certain colors. A rich variety of native shades and hues flows through the land, and we have managed to take every single one of them and give them all meaning, style, purpose, design. With the inspiration of animals like the peacock, or beautiful traditional silks, we can see why our colors have lasted so long. They work for us, they have for so long, why take a chance on a foreign color when all the old ones still work just fine? There's a very simple reason that these have stuck with us for so long, and that simply is: they work

2
Image
Foreign Fashion Frenzy

With the bombardment of our senses with movies and magazines and models showing off all the latest Euclean fashions, let's just take a moment to remember there's nothing inherent attractive about them. The Eucleans have always had their head in the clouds with the way they dress, and our ancestors thought they looked frankly ridiculous. While we can all appreciate a chic, modern look, this doesn't mean we have to bow to Euclean conventions to achieve it. Indeed, our own historical fashions fit wonderfully, and many fit the mold well ahead of time!

3
Image
Appropriate Appropriation

In the modern day, in a global society, some exchange is bound to happen. For as much as we may thirst for Euclean fashions, what often goes unsaid in Coius is how the Eucleans thirst for our styles. Ancient Coian fashions have fascinated Euclea and their sphere for as long as anyone can remember, centuries, millennia even, and it still shows today. Our silks, our art, still shows up all over the place in the Euclosphere. Dresses, shawls, jackets, the whole lot! If the people bombarding us with their images love it so much, why shouldn't we who made it do the same?

4
Image
Don't be afraid to show off!

We've spent the article so far talking about why traditional Coian fashions are not only relevant, but as beautiful as anything the rest of the world can put out. All the same, if you got the goods, you might as well flaunt them! Euclo fashions and accessories have their benefits for sure. Not everything can be made of silk. A leather jacket, a pair of skinny jeans, or a nice cotton blouse can really spruce up any old outfit and do wonders for your wardrobe. Diversity is the spice of life, so they say, and we in Coius know our spices intimately. Just wear what makes you look good, and roll with it!

5
Image
The Changing of the Seasons

The four seasons play an important part in nearly every culture in Coius. Whether you're dolled up in a sari for the spring, or a kimono for the cold, you have to know how to dress for the weather and the seasons. Give bright colors for a summer style, cooler or more subdued ones for a chillier time. Just try to match what you see outside your window, and there's no way you can go wrong.

6
Image
Geometry

Try to create interesting lines with your style. The pattern you can get out of the borders of your clothes can be a big factor in how interesting your look is. Play with different items, see what you can get. Our ancestors mixed shawls and dresses to get square necklines, or wore wraps to get triangular ones. Pairing a Euclo-style shirt with a jacket can interrupt the curve of the neckline and create a line there. Belts are another great way to get this effect, especially if they stand out from the main body. They can reshape your figure, and interrupt a line in the middle to create two different sections to play with. Geometric designs can help play to this a fair bit, and to be certain add a little flair to your wardrobe.

7
Image
Mix and Match

A great way to look stylish and unique is to mix up what you wear. Get some traditional designs and mix it with some Euclean elements too. Wear a bit of cotton and a bit of denim. Wear boots with silk. Certain matches will complement one another, while others will clash in the best of ways. One of the best things you can do is to diversify your textures, so that you never quite connect one texture to another of the same type. Accessories like jackets, gloves, and shoes can all match, but if you keep your top and bottom distinct from your accessories, it'll match beautifully. If you do decide to match one texture to another directly, at least give them the benefit of a color difference. Black leggings with black boots won't work if they're both the same shade of black, but a little difference will make the combo spark.

8
Image
Get eccentric!

Don't be afraid to explore your style and see what you like. In some places, it's all the rage to be wearing eccentric, poofy, rainbow, or otherwise abnormal clothing. Nobody can deny that all of these are great at catching the eye, and if you fall into this, go all-in! Do it with full intent and you'll make it through. It's not normal, but it's what you like, and isn't that the whole point of it? You'll be the cool, weird, or mysterious one. You'll be unpredictable, hard to pin down, and people will love you for it. Don't let your inhibitions define you!

9
Image
Gamer Chic

Pop culture is loaded with creative aesthetics and design choices. Every year at conventions, thousands upon thousands of lovelies such as yourself take inspiration and delight in custom costuming based on their favorite shows, games, books, and idols. Why not take a page from their guide and see what costumes and ideas you like in your favorite series? See how you can incorporate your fandom into your daily style, get some bonus points with your friends by doing so. Let the world know what you love, and they won't be able to help but to love you back.

10
Image
Silhouettes are everything

With so many different options before you, always keep your silhouette in mind. A slim, modern look can be achieved with all the tight-fitting clothes the world has to offer, while a flowing and graceful look will be better suited by a much fuller silhouette without many breaks. Get an edgy look with a janky silhouette, or appear clean and proper with a square one. The possibilities are as endless as your creative ability, so see what you like and roll with it!

11
Image
Stay covered

Relative paleness is a sign of beauty in Coius, and has been for millennia. Although the Eucleans love getting themselves tanned, they also produce a great many items of clothing that make it so much easier to stay out of the sun than ever before. Long spandex gloves and stretch leggings let a lady keep her extremities out of the sun, so when she shows them off with a cute tank or a short skirt, they can be seen in all their glory. Modesty is also a virtue, and by covering yourself up in the harsher days of sunlight during the year, you can restyle this coverage to be cute. Throw on a cardigan or a coat, follow earlier tips about matching leggings with boots, these will keep even more of you pale while converting simple modesty into a fashionable choice of its own.

12
Image
Don't overthink it

All these fashion tips might seem overwhelming. How much of it should you pay attention to? All of it? None of it? Well, the simple answer is don't overthink it. Any number of these tips will help to improve your style, but trying too hard is a surefire way to miss the mark. Go with the flow, see what you can do, and enjoy it. If you overthink it, you might end up worse off than you ever were before. Keep it simple, folks.

13
Image
Be yourself

The most important rule of all: be true to yourself. Don't be a poser, don't be what you're not. All of these tips only align as far as you want them to, and if you're not happy with your choices, if you feel like an imposter or if you feel uncomfortable, then do what you like. While fashion is a beautiful thing and there's near infinite subtleties you can toss around here and there and everywhere, none of it matters if you're not enjoying it. Just be yourself, have fun, and I'll see you on the flip side.

Spálgleann, Caldia.

At the LGBT+ International, held this year at Spálgleann Palace in Caldia, a familiar face of Gaullican politics made a surprise appearance. Former Gaullican Foreign Minister, Coralie Barreau, was a headline speaker.

The ex-foreign minister served in that capacity since September of 2018 to roughly mid May of 2019, after images of her and another woman were leaked online. Whilst the official line towed by the party and government was that the Foreign Minister was being reprimanded for her carelessness in her cybersecurity, many criticised the government for its discrimination based on sexual orientation. Barreau, who had refused to comment on the situation, has announced to the world by attending the LGBT+ International that she has 'officially come out'.

Following an initial soiree and reception, the floor was opened to guest-speakers and lecturers. The King of Caldia opened with a welcoming speech in which he announced that Coralie Barreau as a headline speaker. The Gaullican Politician took to centre stage, slumped her shoulders and began to speak.

"When I was initially made Ambassador to Caldia in the early 2000s, I was... scared. For a long time I'd been fighting this feeling within me of who I was and who society, my family and my party expected me to be. This internal struggle has followed my life since I was a young teen. Looking back on it now, I wish I'd been outed sooner. Because when I came to Caldia as ambassador my world, essentially, changed. I could do things I never thought I would be able to do or experience under the watchful eye at home. But here in Caldia, in my own sliver of Gaullican land carved away in the embassy, I was in control."

"It was here that I met my Rebecca." Barreau added, wiping away some tears from her face before flashing a smile towards the cameras, crowds and the King. "It was also here that I swore her to secrecy, for my own professional life. But I understand now this was foolish, because I let a party that didn't care for me in the end be the only thing in the world that mattered. And when I needed them, much like how that Coalition needed me, I was cut loose with little more than a 'It was for the good of the party' and a reassurance that one day I'd be 're compensated.'"

Taking a few seconds to recompose her self, Barreau went on to thank LGBT+ International for giving her a platform from which to speak, thanking the Caldish Royal Family and thanking her 'Becca'. She then announced what many have said to be the real motivation behind this appearance, a stab at her former political allies and party-mates. "I would also like to take this time to announce that I'm not done and I shall not be done until this stigma that exists in Gaullica will change. I'm here to announce that my friend, Blanchard and myself are going to create the 'Conservative and Progressive Republican Party', to shake the foundations of Gaullican politics. To provide an alternative to the shambles of Conservatism, that need to get into bed with monarchists and closeted neo-functionalists."

Opening Statments Made In Lawsuit Against Environment Ministry

SHAREImage Image Image Image
Mieke Plaatjies(@MiekePlaatjies)
8 July (4:30pm)|KLEMMSDORP

Lawyers representing both the Ministry of the Environment and the group of widows seeking compensation from the ministry have made their opening statements in the District Court in Klemmsdorp today as the trial into the allegations of misleading claims regarding the safety of drinking water began.

The litigation seeks to secure ₲110 million ($13.3 million) for the widows of six men who died of arsenic poisoning between 2006 and 2014 after they had prolonged exposure to the toxic element through drinking contaminated water.

If successful, the litigation would secure the largest ever payout from any government ministry.

Drees Rautenbach, the head counsel for the group of widows, says that the Ministry of the Environment mislead the public regarding the safety of the drinking water in the district of Klemmsdorp despite at least one report stating that the water was unsafe due to high levels of arsenic contamination.
"The ministry has a case to answer to because it openly and blatently lied to the people of Klemmsdorp," he said during his opening statement to the court. "The women I represent have lost their husbands due to these lies. It is only right that these women be compensated by the ministry for their failure to inform, and the loss of their husbands and the essential income they earned."

Rautenbach cited a 2006 study compiled by Doctor Martin Snyders of the National Environmental Institute (NOI), one of the few publicly available studies that contradicts the claims made by the Ministry of the Environment. He said that at three sites in the Klemmsdorp district showed levels of arsenic above 200 parts per billion (ppb), which he says is "alarmingly dangerous".
"Take into consideration the fact that we have seen positive correlations between elevated levels of arsenic in water and various cancers," he said. "These correlations have been made at levels below 110 parts per billion. If we are seeing over 200 parts per billion in the water in this district, that has to ring alarm bells in anyone's mind as to what the potential effects on health could be."

Rautenbach said that it was "almost certain" that the levels in the contaminated water were enough to produce arsenic poisoning which proved fatal for the six men. He said that would not surprise him that there would be other deaths or current cases of sickness directly attributed to the high levels of arsenic in drinking water.
"We can only but imagine the sheer number of people suffering health problems because the water they are drinking isn't safe," he said. "It amazes me how a government ministry that is supposed to tell people the water they are drinking is safe would lie to the public in such an egregious fashion."

Allegations were also leveled against the Klemmsdorp Phosphate Mine located 16 kilometres east of the city, as being responsible for the contamination of the water. The mine is operated by fertilizer and agricultural chemical giant Agricor.

Government solicitor Ariana Van Der Byl said that the Ministry of the Environment rejected the claims made by the lawyer of the widows. She said that the information presented to the ministry was based on solid research in the field.
"The ministry was provided with the same basic information that stated the water was safe for human consumption," she said in her opening statement. "In that respect the ministry rejects the claims that it mislead the public."

Van Der Byl stated that the ministry was not responsible for the care of sick and injured persons and that it was not legally obligated to provide compensation. She said that the amount requested from the ministry was "obscene". Van Der Byl also declined to comment regarding the allegations made around the involvement of the phosphate mine owned and operated by Agricor, stating that it was purely speculation.

Evidence is expected to be given by each of the six widows as well as by Martin Snyders. Minister of the Environment Robert Van Thys was expected is also expected to give evidence.

The trial is expected to last for three weeks.

HOMOPHOBIC ATTACK IN PANORMA DRAWS IRE, PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON LLIGA

Image
The two gay friends, Micolau and Àlvar, were assaulted in broad daylight.
Panorma, Florena - A homophobic attack against two homosexual men in Panorma city centre yesterday has been described as "deeply sickening" by onlookers, and has left both men "fearful for their lives" and badly wounded.

Recorded video footage of the incident circulated on social media, becoming a viral video within hours. This has led the attack to garner condemnation from a number of high-profile figures in politics and popular culture.

Premier Escudero let out a fiery and passionate speech in defence of the two men, deriding the attackers as "contemptuous vermin", while leader of the opposition Adam Escriva also condemned the attack as "utterly reprehensible". Moderada leader Elisabet Sobrino, herself a member of the LGBT+ community, denounced the attacks, claiming they were "products of a by-gone age". She went on to chastise the current administration for not doing more to protect the LGBT+ community.

Controversy has also arisen as the assaulted men, and many viewers of the video, claim that the attackers chanted "Viu la Lliga" and "Això és per Pereramon" - two mottos of the nascent and populist Nèstorine League - during the attack. This has led onlookers and viewers to claim that the attackers were members of the party, which recently won the Euclean elections in Florena on a populist, anti-establishment and anti-Etrurian platform. Party spokespeople have refuted this as "dangerous libel".

While Lliga leader Romeu Casaramon proclaimed that "violence against Florens is not the Lliga way", but refused to comment on whether the attackers would be expelled from he party, were they to be members.

Panorma Metropolitan Police have taken three suspects into custody, but have urged citizens to be "on the lookout" for other suspects who match the descriptions given, and to "remain vigilant" in the face of similar attacks.

Though one of the men carried a Lliga membership card, the Police have urged citizens "not to jump to conclusions", and to allow justice to "advance unhindered" by party political disputes.

Mathratown protests now engulf all of Jindao, one of the largest ever

Pierre Zhou
10:32 - 11 July, 2019

Image
The flag of Jindao is flown amidst protesters' calls for Jindanese independence.

Over 700,000 flock to the streets of Jindao as the Mathratown protests enter a new stage.

The July 7 protests were significant, with around 50,000 people participating in the calls to revoke the sentence of extradition for two Mathran vandals who defaced the Mathran consulate on New Sirand Street in the early hours of July 7th - but nobody could have predicted the scale of the protests just four days later.

The protesters' objective has deviated from the revocation of the extradition to a wide variety of motives - including the restoration of Estmerish rule, more autonomy and one staunch talking point following the protests last week - Jindanese independence.

In an independent poll conducted by Jindanese political survey organisation JindaoSays, 39% voted that they would vote for independence if a referendum was held, the highest it has ever been by quite a substantial margin, although not larger than the 46% who would opt to remain a part of Xiaodong, with 15% saying they "didn't know" or "didn't have an opinion". While the protests were not initiated by a fault on Xiaodong's end, the protests have certainly evolved to include criticisms of the country's authoritarian government and more accusations of human rights violations from both Xiaodong and Mathrabumi have risen following the protests' success, but whether these are true or false is yet to be confirmed. The Jindanese government and Chief Executive Guo Zhenya assure that Jindao and Mathrabumi are working together to find a path that suits everyone, but the efforts seem increasingly futile as the repatriation of the Mathrans is pushed further back in the list of priorities brought about by the protests.

The port city of Jindao has a staunch history of autonomy and liberality throughout its time as a major harbour. Originally ceded to Gaullica in 1884 as part of a new alliance agreement, the city rapidly improved with Euclean customs and technology being brought to the island. While Gaullica repressed the native Xiao culture on the island in favour of a more Gaullican counterpart, their plan failed to come to fruition after their surrender in the Great War and the island's sovereignty handed to Estmere. Estmere introduced democracy on the island, giving Jindao an autonomous government - the Biao - in 1949, as well as reforming various aspects of Jindanese society. In the 1960s, the Jindanese culture emerged as a separate one to that of the mainland, with more Euclean influence. The rights of the island were guaranteed in the Xiao-Estmerish Jindao Treaty of 1990 and the port eventually given back in 1996 after 112 of Euclean rule. The ownership by Xiaodong is believed by many to be limiting to the rights of the island enjoyed throughout its Estmerish tenure, leading to calls for the return to Estmerish ownership as well as flat out independence.

PROTESTERS IN JINDAO RALLY IN SUPPORT OF INDEPENDENCE FROM XIAODONG, CATCHING ESTMERISH DIPLOMATS OFF-GUARD

Image
Nearly 700,000 demonstrators gathered in favor of Jindanese independence.
Jindao AAT, Xiaodong - Renewed protests in Jindao have seen over seven-hundred thousand take to the streets to demonstrate in favor of the territory of the autonomous territory from Xiaodong.

Protests began on Sunday following the vandalization of the Mathran consulate, plastering pro-democracy messaging on the diplomatic office's walls. An estimated fifty-thousand protested against the planned extradition of the two vandals. However, after days of continuous demonstrations, the motives of those protesting have evolved. Demonstrators are critical of rising authoritarianism in Xiaodong and human rights violations committed by the state. Thousands in the territory are now calling for secession from Xiaodong, with some even demanding the return of Estmerish jurisdiction over the ex-colony.

The size, scope, and motivations of the new demonstrations has caught Estmerish diplomats completely off guard. The existing Xiao-Estmerish Jindao Treaty of 1990 resulted in the transfer of jurisdiction over the island territory in 1996. It marked the end of Estmere's colonial empire, signaling the end of Euclean colonization of Coius that had lasted close to two centuries. The treaty binds both Estmere and Xiaodong to certain obligations regarding Jindao's autonomy. Under the treaty, Estmere fully recognizes Xiaodongese authority over the island. Ashcombe also pledges not to influence political activity in Jindaom, with Rongzhuo making similar promises. However, the protests pose a significant challenge to obligations under the treaty as diplomats in Ashcombe fear a heavy-handed response from the Xiaodongese government.

Estmere first established jurisdiction over Jindao following Gaullica's defeat in the Great War, when the island's sovereignty was transferred to Estmere. By 1950, democratic reforms were introduced in Jindao, bringing it more in line with Estmere's other colonial possessions. In the 1960s, the Jindanese culture emerged as a separate one to that of the mainland, with more Euclean influence, creating a culture clash between those on the Xiao mainland and those living on the island.

A poll conducted by a Jindanese polling agency showed that of 39% participants would back independence if a referendum was held while 46% would vote to remain a part of Xiaodong. 15% of respondents said they "didn't know" or "didn't have an opinion". The poll has the highest showing of support of secession from Xiaodong since the transfer took place in 1996 and presents serious challenges for Estmere and Xiaodong.

Commenting on the developments, Foreign Secretary Anne Buckett said it was "imperative" that authorities in Jindao and Xiaodong allow protests to "continue peacefully".

"The right to peaceful assembly and demonstration is a universally recognized by members of the Community of Nations under the Declaration of Universal Natural Rights, of which Xiaodong is a signatory".

She reaffirmed Ashcombe's support for the continuation of democracy in Jindao and backed the political authority of the Biao, the Jindanese government. When asked about calls for independence from Xiaodong, she said that referendums were "an agent of democracy" and should one be held by the Biao, it would "not violate the terms of the [1990 transfer agreement]".

Prime Minister Reginald Wilton-Smyth has also commented on the developments in Jindao. Echoing Buckett's statements, he said it was "crucial to Xiao-Estmerish relations" that the protests be allowed to continue peacefully. The prime minister also stated that the territory's independence was "not impossible" and said he felt return to Estmerish authority was a "novel idea", but unlikely.

In recent years before becoming prime minister, Wilton-Smyth has been highly critical of Xiaodong and the rise of authoritarianism in other states. After winning his party's leadership contest following the resignation of Rupert Richardson, the prime minister warned that "forces of illberalism are assembling" in order to "usurp democratic norms and challenge our very way of life". Previously, he had described Xiaodong as an "anti-democratic and rogue" state.

His comments are a departure from traditional Estmerish policy, which has sought to embrace potential adversaries like Xiaodong and attempt to bring them into the establish international system as partners.

Rongzhuo has not yet commented on the protests or the Estmerish response.

Kansasto Celebrates its 45th Year of Independence
President Karppinen Salutes 'Every Man, Woman and Child of Our Great Nation'

Suuramma, Kansasto:

Today marked the 45th anniversary of the Storming of Hanu Armory, the event widely believed to mark the declaration of Kansasto's independence when Kansen nationalists stormed the Hanu Armory, a large reserve stockpile of weaponry held within the then-Union of Tuulen Workers Councils to arm themselves to overthrow the Marolevic troops occupying Kansasto at that time. This action would inspire similar uprisings by other nationalist groups, forming into loose militia groups to throw out the MSU forces within the country and resulting in the formation of counter-revolutionary Tuulen militias.

Image
Surface-to-surface missile launchers on parade in Suuramma, the capital of Kansasto
After fierce fighting against these counter-revolutionary groups which sought to keep the status quo, and later against an invasion by Marolevia which sought to restore Imperial control over Kansasto as had been the case for centuries prior to the establishment of the Grand Republic of Kansasto, often referred to as the First Republic, which emerged during the rise of the MSU and was absorbed into the MSU as the Union of Tuulen Workers Councils after the Great War.

The President of Kansasto, Akseli Karppinen, who assumed the post upon the transition to democracy in 1981 from the Provisional Government of National Defence and has successfully held the post since then due to his widespread popularity among the Kansen and Vaikanen communities within Kansasto although with varying strengths of majority within Kansasto's parliament, gave a speech where he thanked and saluted 'every man, woman and child of our great nation, for making it a prosperous nation that our ancestors could only have dreamed of and preserving her peace, freedom and independence against those who sought to trample upon it'.

The anniversary celebrations include a military parade from the Kansen Ground Self-Defence Forces and surviving veterans and military equipment from the conflicts surrounding Kansasto's independence, a state banquet in the Palace of the Sea and a fireworks display, as well as other celebrations across the country in other cities and also being a national holiday.

The day was, however, more muted in the Tuulen-majority areas of the country, where a notable police presence was on the streets as the Tuulen view the national holiday as intended to shame them, and some refuse to acknowledge it as a holiday entirely. The police have not reported any attempted attacks during the celebrations, although protesters did gather outside government buildings demanding autonomy for the Tuulen-majority areas but these protests were peacefully dispersed by local police forces.

Fauglia Pride festival cancelled due to security concerns
Popular music concert cancelled after Gov. Emmanuelle Marconi was informed of plot by CSS.

The annual FaugliaOroglio concert held in Santa Cecilia Park has been cancelled over security concerns by order of Governor Emmanuelle Marconi. The LGTB+ concert was to start tonight and hosts almost 35,000 people.
Image
FaugliaOroglio is a popular festival drawing thousands.

The Governor’s office released a statement saying, “due to deep security and safety concerns, the state administration has ordered the closure and postponement of the FaugliaOroglio concert.” The statement also stated that security concerns were raised by the Civil Security Service, “federal agencies raised concerns after they reported to us that intelligence had been collected to indicate a plot against the concert.”

FaugliaOroglio which means FaugliaPride, is one of the most popular events for the LGBT community in Etruria, drawing numerous singers and bands.

The concert organiser, Lucia Panella posted on Social Media, “Due to security concerns, the state has cancelled FaugliaOroglio in Santa Cecilia Park. We will be making arrangements for refunds should we be not allowed to press on. Heartbroken and deeply sorry xx”

The decision has sparked surprise and criticism.

Mayor of Fauglia, Rosario Meloni (CA), speaking on Vespasia Today said, “I am deeply disturbed by this, especially since I’ve not seen or heard of any security threat. I will be in touch with the state government as soon as possible.”

The city’s Deputy Mayor for Tourism and Culture, Maria Schiaparelli tweeted, “considering the controversies around pride month across Etruria this year, I expect the governor’s office to release all evidence and concerns to the public.”

Pride Month events across Etruria have been disrupted or cancelled outright, with the Pride Parade in Ossuccio cancelled last minute due to city hall launching emergency road works along the route. In Turania the Pride Festival was shut down before it opened because of licensing issues. In Solaria the Pride March was thrown into chaos after City Hall requested the organisers lodge protest permit requests over the usual cultural event permit, due to the city’s reclassification of the march as a protest due to planned demonstrations over the Tribune Movement’s education reforms. The granting of permits was so delayed that only an estimated 1,500 people took part, down from the 280,000 last year.

The decision in Fauglia has therefore drawn much criticism and questions.

On social media people of the LGBT community questioned the validity of the security concerns, with one twitter user saying, “What are the chances there’s not security threat? But just the threat of an anti-LGBT state government?” Another wrote, “pretty sure a threat that big would involve the mayor of Fauglia and the Federal government? Did they see any of this?”

Front runner in the Citizens’ Alliance leadership race, Gianluca Tozza said at a hustings, “trust me, we’re going to launch a senate investigation into all disruptions of Pride Month, we have seen in many cities the outright obstruction of the LGBT community’s right to celebrate their sexuality. This is wrong.”

However, Governor Emmanuelle Marconi tweeted in response to the criticism, “claims of a conspiracy against gay people is absolutely false. We take all security matters seriously and won’t take risks.”

Senior Tribune, Aurelio D’Santis lamented the “emergence of another culture war led by the identity obsessed left. Perhaps we should avoid the next one by letting lunatics do what they want?”

The Governor’s office said that should it believe the security situation to be safe, it may allow the concert to proceed from tomorrow or on Sunday.”

IN, OUT, SHAKE IT ALL ABOUT: POLITICAL SHIFTS IN EUCLOPARL

Image
The Euclean Parliament is set to be shook by shifts in the political landscape.
Kesselbourg, Kesselbourg - With the Euclean elections concluded, and Euclean governments now hard at work assembling the governing Commission, a seismic shift in the Euclean Parliament almost went amiss.

In the recent Euclean elections, the three major Euclophillic parties of the Grand Coalition lost out; with the centre-right ACDE the hardest hit. While this led to a somber night for the three major parties, it did lead to rejoicing elsewhere on the political field, with two other political groups - the PGNM and AEN - making significant gains alongside Non-Inscit parties.

The end result is a changed Euclean Parliament; the composition of which not resembling that of the last sitting. This, combined with the natural ebb and flow of political currents, has in turn led to a tumultuous week in Euclean politics.

Greens surge, and the regionalists split

Without a doubt, the performance of the PGNM was the biggest shock of the recent Euclean elections. The joint Green-Regionalist group made gains in every member state sans Florena, and became the second largest group in the Weranic and Ordennyan delegations. Their joint group almost rivaled the ELP. Following the election-night celebrations, however, there was controversy. The vast majority of their seats belonged to Green parties, and when it came time to nominate leaders, the regionalists were side-lined, and the historic compromise between the two groups shattered as a result.

Æðelwine Wykes, a prominent MEP from the Swathish Party, announced on July 1st that the regionalist groups would not sit alongside their Green counterparts, bringing an effective end to the PGNM. The Green leadership, while not thrilled by this development, is also not likely to feel the blow as much as the regionalists might have hoped; even without their regionalist counterparts, the Greens will still have emerged as the fourth largest force in Euclean politics.

The regionalists will now sit in their own bloc; the Alliance for a Federal and Regionalist Euclea (AFRE), while the Greens have brought a small number of eco-socialist parties into their ranks, and established the Green and Ecologist Movement (GEM).

PEC stalls, and AEN heaves forward

The night was perhaps not as great as the Euclorealists and Euclosceptics had hoped. The moderately-sceptic PEC group saw it's share of the vote plummet, with total disaster only averted by the rise of the KKF in Ordennya. They did, however, face embarrassment as they fell from the fourth largest party in Parliament to the sixth. AEN, meanwhile, had a better time of it; their voteshare and seat count did rise, but it certainly fell short of their expectations. While they beat their opponents in PEC, they did not see their total placement in the Parliament change, with the Greens passing them to become the fourth largest party.

There is an argument to be made, and indeed many from both AEN and PEC made it, that the two parties saw themselves falter as they continued to campaign against one another for the same votes. Accusations were also leveled by supporters that both parties, particularly PEC, were outdated, and falling behind in the modern political environment, failing to engage young voters on social media, who instead flocked to the Greens. The elephant in the room, of course, is that both parties also saw their traditional voter base migrate to newer, more dynamic parties that occupied the Non-Inscrit camp. The Nèstorine League in Florena and the Estmerish NI-PFD both made sizable gains, and in many cases replaced their AEN counterparts; in particular, the AEN party Estmere First saw it vote plummet as voters deserted it for NI-PFD.

Ultimately, the end result of this has been a renewed attempt by right-wing parties to cooperate. As such, AEN and PEC both voluntarily dissolved, and, along with the NI-PFD, their constituent parties then formed the Movement for a New Democratic Euclea (MNDE). With this new party, the right is attemping to modernise itself, and to shake off it's traditional roots. This has, of course, led to discontent from some member parties. Spokespeople from the Ordennyan KKF made clear that the party believed the MNDE too radical, and will instead try to form a new Euclorealist group; though as of yet it is unclear as to whether they will find the 6 parties necessary. Meanwhile, Weranic NKP has made overtures to join the new group, and the Floren Nèstorine League looks like to follow, after their attempts to join the three main Euclo parties proved fruitless.

What is to be done? The burning questions of PAEL

PAEL's performance in the elections left much to be desired. Though they did make a net gain of seats and voteshare, they still lag behind the other party groups, and have yet to regain the same clout they had before their collapse in the 2014 elections. Much of their thunder has been stolen by the rising Greens, and they have been unable to displace SAE as they threatened to do only twenty years ago.

PAEL's decision to re-brand and invite new parties into its group is unsurprising, and certainly a move in the right direction for them. The group, largely comprised of collectivists and radical socialists, has been trying to court the Floren anarchists in the FAU - who currently operate an abstentionist policy in regards to the Euclean Parliament - but have so far been largely unable to get the party to sign on to any cohesive agreement. Regardless of this, the party has gone ahead with its re-branding. The group will now sit as the Mixed Radical Left (MRL), an attempt to disassociate the party from PAEL's bumpy heritage.

PM: IT IS 'WITHOUT QUESTION' ZORASAN IS BEHIND KENNFORD INCIDENT

Image
Prime Minister Wilton-Smyth said the "rouge" state was behind the attack on Ekarat.
Ashcombe, Estmere - The Estmerish government has accused agents working on behalf of the Union of Zorasani Ifranic Republics of carrying out an "assassination" of a polilitical dissident this past weekend, staging the Kennford Incident in order to silence a powerful critic of Zorasan.

Addressing a packed press conference, the prime minister said that evidence obtained by authorities during the investigation into the incident said it was "without question" that Zorasan was behind the attack.

"Based on the information gathered by law enforcement and counter-terrorism agents on the ground, and reports complied from the intelligence community, it we can confirm that the Union of Zorasani Ifranic Republic was behind the assassination carried out in Kennford Saturday morning".

The identity of the victim, Assad Ekarat, was also made public for the first time during his address. A former Zorasani centrist MP, Ekarat fled the country in 2003 following the arrest and torture of his eldest son. He has been a vocal critic of the Zorasani government, denouncing the influence of the military and state control over everyday life. Recently, he has spoken-out against the Zorasani military's role in the country's ongoing water crisis, where protests have dogged the government. Ekarat was a longtime contributor to the Ashcombe Herald, regularly contributing as a guest columnist.

"As a nation that not only believes in but cherishes the rule of law, we will give the police the space and time to carry out their investigation properly. Make no mistake, however. It is without question that the attack was organized and conducted by the Zorasani state in an attempt to silence a political dissident who spoke out against the totalitarian, anti-democratic, and fanatical nature of the regime in Zahedan".

Wilton-Smyth also called on Estmere's Euclean and global allies to "stand in solidarity, stand in defense of freedom and liberty" and "condemn the rogue elements behind this heinous attack".

"We in Estmere are not afraid. We do not fear you and let me be clear: you will not strike terror into our hearts or murder people on our streets any longer".

His remarks come before this weekends meeting of the Euclean Convention in Hennehouwe, where leaders of the Euclean Community will gather to nominate the next Euclean Commission. Working in tandem with the foreign secretary and newly appointed Euclean secretary, the prime minister is expected to pursue a series of sanctions against Zorasan. He declined to speak to their nature, but said that Estmere will "not sit idly by" and will call the international community to "stand up for the rule of law, free speech, and human rights".

An investigation into the attack is still ongoing. The government has been slow to publicize any information related to the assassination, with a spokesperson saying the government did not want the press or public to "influence" the outcome. Local police in Kennford are working in coordination with federal police and counter-terrorism officers.

Foreign Minister slams Estmerish "lies and baseless accusation"

Image
Foreign Minister Javan Borazjani attacked Estmere for "bemsirching the dignity of the Union."
Zahedan, Union Capital Territory- Foreign Minister Javan Borazjani has dismissed Estmerish accusations of Zorasan’s role in the murder of former MP, Assad Erekat. In a televised press conference, he denounced the accusation as “utterly ludicrous as much as it is insulting to the people of Zorasan.” He urged Estmere to “immediately publish all evidence so that the international community can draw its own conclusion.”

Estmere’s controversial Prime Minister Reginald Wilton-Smyth openly accused the Union in a press conference saying, "Based on the information gathered by law enforcement and counter-terrorism agents on the ground, and reports complied from the intelligence community, it we can confirm that the Union of Zorasani Irfanic Republics was behind the assassination carried out in Kennford Saturday morning".

The Prime Minister then grandstanded by saying, "As a nation that not only believes in but cherishes the rule of law, we will give the police the space and time to carry out their investigation properly. Make no mistake, however. It is without question that the attack was organized and conducted by the Zorasani state in an attempt to silence a political dissident who spoke out against the totalitarian, anti-democratic, and fanatical nature of the regime in Zahedan".

Foreign Minister Borazjani at his press conference reiterated Zorasan’s commitment to international law, “while it is saddening that I must reaffirm Zorasan’s commitment to international law, that is what I am doing. Estmere’s accusations appear to be ideologically driven by a Prime Minister who earns for a past that no longer exists, and who seeks to play an international role unbefitting for the Estmere of the 21st century.”

He also warned Estmere that Zorasan would not tolerate a “besmirching of the Union’s name”, saying, “the Prime Minister should know that the Union is not only innocent of this supposed crime, but will not tolerate and respond to, any Estmerish attempt to besmirch the honour and dignity of the Union.”

The accusation follows the poisoning of Assad Erekat, a former member of the Popular Council in Zorasan. He served in parliament from 1993 until 2003, when he fled Zorasan for Estmere after his son, Malik, was arrested for subversive behaviour. His son had been caught distributing salacious materials against the government, including vicious accusations of homosexuality. Mr. Erekat and his family received asylum in Estmere, where he set up numerous bodies aimed at assisting asylum seekers from across Coius.

Mr. Erekat was poisoned in the city of Kennford a few days ago.

The accusation was also roundly denounced by other senior government figures. State President Vahid Isfandiar in a passing comment to journalists said, “this accusation is baseless, there is no evidence that the Union was responsible, other than the word of a reactionary Euclean government.”

First Minister Farzad Akbari who was visiting southern Pardaran told reporters, “the government will combat these lies with respect and dignity. But know that the Union has never and will never, engage in this kind of savage behaviour.”

Questions will no doubt be abounding in Euclean capitals, due to Estmere’s Prime Minister’s reputation as a racist, sexist and antiquated politician. He is well known in some circles to yearn for the 19th century era Estmere, when it occupied and exploited vast territories of the world. He has historically spoken positively of Estmere’s colonial rule in Hydana, Coius and Bahia, dismissing cases of systematic annihilation of terrorised peoples.

More as the story develops.

While we extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of Assad Erakat and recommend a fair and impartial investigation into the circumstances of his unfortunate death, it is undeniable that there is no evidence to suggest that his death was a deliberate assassination conducted by a Zorasani agent and that the Estmerian government is using his tragedy to undermine the diplomatic integrity of Zorasan.

Since the rise of colonialism, eastern states such as Estmere have ruthlessly sabotaged, denigrated, and exploited the Pardarian peoples in the eyes of the world for their own material gain and it is clear that this shameless attempt to frame Zorasan for Estmere's failure to provide security for its own citizens is merely another plot to do so. The accusations levied against Zorasan are the baseless and unsubstantiated lies of imperial warmongers and any nation at the forefront of this international coalition to destroy the international reputation of Zorasan and the Pardarian people as a whole will face diplomatic retaliation from the Karzari government.

While we are divided by faith, we are united by language and a common desire to resist foreign domination and secure the independence and integrity of the Pardarian peoples. As a result of the vote of the 178th session of the Consultative Council, the Ahuri Socialist Republic of Karzaristan has officially announced that it will stand by the Union of Zorasani Irfanic Republics in condemning the recent false accusations directed at its government in the interest of solidarity with our Pardarian compatriots in their struggle for sovereignty and self-determination against the imperial robber barons of Estmere.

Signed, President of the Ahuri Socialist Union Jahansuz Xodavand

March Against Discrimination morphs into anti-government protests
Published at 2019-07-14T19:21Z
Reported by Reporter Simit Manhdantaspeg, Reporter Daba Katuzban

Image
Police on Sunday, directing but not arresting protesters

The March Against Discrimination, postponed by the heatwave, was held on Saturday the 13th of July. Despite its hasty rescheduling, it saw record turnout. The one day parade then transformed into a sit-in at Gabazankan Square, and the protests have now continued throughout the 14th, their cause increasingly unrelated to the initial parade's purpose.

The March Against Discrimination, Aimilia's main LGBTQ+ event, was scheduled for the 30th of June, but had to be postponed because of the 2019 Euclean heatwave. The event took place on the 13th of July in Kakzazna, Aimilia's capital, with an estimated turnout of 100,000 this year, compared to 25,000 last year. It has been suggested that this turnout was influenced by increased awareness, and people extending their leave taken for the heatwave, but more significantly, there was strong government condemnation of the event.

While not in charge of the local authority that manages events such as the March Against Discrimination, the Conservative-Liberal coalition government made several strong statements during the week, condemning the march as "absolute nonsense", "damaging to the children", and "likely to cause unrest". This included during debates on unrelated issues in the Kazbastad, the unicameral legislature, which was in session. Opposition parties, particularly the Party of Labour, said that the government was trying to draw attention away from its mismanagement of the heatwave, tabling papers suggesting 5,000 had died from the heatwave, of which 500 were young people. They also came out in support of the March.

The result seems to have been that many have conflated the causes; a popular BuddyPal post urges people to "turrn up the heat [sic]" on the government by attending the March Against Discrimination, and marchers with messages about climate change, corruption and racism were widely present on Saturday. No comment was available from the organisers of the March when we approached them, but it was generally agreed by participants and observers, including an on-duty police officer who shall remain unnamed, that the marchers for various causes were of one mind.

When nightfall came on the 13th, the marchers did not disperse, but many stuck around, participating in impromptu revels around the city, or most significantly, sitting in at Gabazankan Square, the largest open area in central Kakzazna. There, tents, billboards and other signs of occupancy have appeared, and the rainbow pride flag has been raised below the Aimilian one at the flagpole.

It is estimated over a thousand protesters, mostly young people, stayed overnight in Gabazankan Square, and numbers of protesters on Sunday swelled to around 30,000, according to our estimates by helicopter. Notable chants and demands from the rally on the second day included "Batsatindim resign", a reference to the head of government Chancellor Manham Batsatindim, "Justice for the 500", a reference to the popularly disseminated figure on the number of non-elderly who died from the heatwave, and "Save Aimilia, save the planet".

Police observed but did not interfere in Saturday's events, outside of a few minor non-politically charged events; on the whole, things were not violent. Overnight, movements within the city were noted. On Sunday, arrests began to be made, with attempts to disperse smaller groups, and responses to calls of damage to property, including several windows smashed and one car overturned. However, as of time of writing, no movements have been seen on the main groups of protesters. The return of the work week may see where the protests lead; the police chief of Kakzazna issued a public statement telling protesters to "[g]o home, and end the riot". Unconfirmed reports say that an attempt to mobilise firefighters to use hoses to disperse the crowds failed because the firefighters refused to participate on union advice.

One was the LGBTQ+ protesters, who have been coming regularly for a long time. Actually, I would not characterise them as radicals, but the public mood has shifted. Many of the other protesters were anarchists and other fellow travellers, who, as they are usual to do, take advantage of the popular cause to join the prottest. I think it is however a credit to them how well they managed to integrate with the protest and shape it. It was a very successful play, though what they may make of this capital may not be clear. This is one of those events that really lies Aimilian politics out barebones, will be one to watch.

Guide to Kituki Elections: The Senate Election in Keng Maydon (2019)
written by Alifad Karimi, 12/07/2019

Image
Senate candidate Amina ir Indolyir (l.) and Senator Aziz al Bur (r.)

Nurhasan, Kituk - As the annual Senate elections in Kituk come nearer, all eyes are on the race in the Principality of Keng Maydon, where an influential Senator faces off the daughter of the nation's High Representative. And the race shows: Against an ir Indolyir, the Senator's influence is limited.

Keng Maydon does not use a direct vote: To counter the electoral influence of Esketin Yo'li, the nation's biggest city, and its traditionally more liberal electorate, candidates are not elected based on a majority of votes but rather a plurality of electoral districts - of which there are twelve. This has regularly led to conflict within the Principality and dissatisfaction with the local Senators, since only two of the current nine Senators from Keng Maydon have actually been elected by a majority of their Principality. The remaining seven only managed to collect sufficient electoral districts (in two cases, only a plurality instead of a majority of districts). This has majorly benefited the Traditionalist Party.

One of the beneficiaries is Senator al Bur, who (at 42) is one of the youngest members of the Senate. Once hailed as rising star in Keng Maydon (where he won eight of the twelve electoral districts, including one in Esketin Yo'li), he forced his way into the Infrastructure Committee and became Committee Chair. As such, he has a lot of influence over which infrastructure projects are next on the list of the Senate - a duty that comes with many friends. Senators, mayors, businessmen and even ambassador have befriended him and received an extensive display on his social media feed. Parties that al Bur hosts are never empty. Or so they were.

Since Amina ir Indolyir entered the race to become the next Senator, the tide has turned, and that's not solely owed to her father's status. She herself has become a bit of a celebrity. As an ambassador's daughter she learned to love freedom early on - and she learned to admire strong women around the world. After studying nursery, she went on to become an actress. Known even beyond Kituk, thanks to her father and his talent in advertising her to directors abroad. Through her career as actress, she got to know and later married the Secretary of Culture of Keng Maydon, who went on to become Prime Minister of the Principality. To avoid scandal, she ended her (successful) career as an actress and became the First Lady, an office she filled glamorously. And if her early endorsements are an indication, she used that office to make lots of friends, not unlike her father.

Money, fame and endorsements are on the side of ir Indolyir - but are voters?

It seems certain that she will win the three electoral districts of Esketin Yo'li, where she has the status of an icon, and her home district. Al Bur is also likely to win his home district. Preliminary polling in the other electoral district shows that four learn towards ir Indolyir, two are strongly in favour of her and one is strongly in favour of al Bur.

If ir Indolyir was elected, that would create difficulties for her father, since she is not currently a member of the Traditionalist Party and has not yet committed to joining their faction in the Senate of Kituk. He would also have to start justifying himself for the actions of his daughter more often.

The two will face off in a debate in ten days.

How did we get the election wrong?
Jöran Granestrand, Professor of Politics at the Vastdal School of Politics & Public Administrator, and resident psephologist for OBC, gives his analysis of the 2019 election.
SHARE ImageImage Image Image
Jöran Granestrand(@jgrandestrandvastdal)
14th July 2019|Vastdal

Image

It’s been nearly one month since the election, and the last month has given me a lot of time to think about where we all went so wrong.
When I say “we”, I mean the pollsters, the pundits, the commentators, and the media.
I mean, with the data in front of us we had no reason to not think that the KKF and KPO would make significant gains in an election that would mark a realignment of Ordennyan politics, more-so than last October, one would imagine. The KKF-KPO joint “People’s Alliance” ticket ran a pretty tight campaign, capitalising on a Green Party that seemed frozen and fractured at the sudden jump from third party to major political force, and a (dis-)United Socialist Party that was still reeling from last year’s death of the KSD (Coalition of Socialists & Democrats), lost in the political wilderness. All the signs were pointing to the rise of a right-wing hegemony of Ordennyan politics that would endure for years to come.
But the moment we saw that exit poll, at 10:00 on June 20th, we knew we’d all been gravely wrong. I was shocked myself. As OBC’s resident psephologist, I translated the data from the exit poll into the seat projection. Even I was shocked. What had I missed? What had we all missed?

Image

There were indications throughout the campaign that despite the “People Alliance’s” attempts to cast the election in the light of a referendum on Ordennya’s membership of the EC, Ordennyan voters had more nuanced concerns about the future of the country. These indications, coupled with a small, mid-campaign surge for the Green Party after the first Leader’s Debate, should have been the first sign that the election was going to go a drastically different way than we thought. Problem was, we dismissed it as the small, mid-campaign surge that it was. After a couple of days, the KKF regained their lead over the Greens, leaving us pretty secure in the belief that the election would be a victory for the People’s Alliance.
So what was it that we missed?
To be honest, it was pretty hard for us to miss. All the signs were there. Putting aside the individual figures for each party, when it came to polling on the issues, the issues that Ordennyan voters viewed as most important came in the form of, in descending order, climate change, healthcare, the economy, welfare, and infrastructure, with EC membership as the 6th most important issue. Further, when we factor in party polling, only 30% said they were certain to vote in the way they said they would when answering in the poll.
The fact that people ranked the main issues that the Greens had central to their campaign as their most important issues showed that they were far more receptive to the Green message than we had previously thought.
We also seemed to be obsessed with viewing the federal election, in which voting is compulsory, through the prism of the state elections and the exit polls for the EC elections, in which turnout only hit 35%, where the KKF and KPO made gains in both.
So here we are, in a post-poll world, as it were, when, against all the odds, the Greens made some pretty significant gains, to attain power with their partners in the FSP. We live in a changing country, and it falls to those of us, who got it wrong last time, to change with it.

WINTERBOTTOM AFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR ESTMERE, VOWS THAT ZORASAN WILL BE PUNISHED

Image
Winterbottom assured Estmerish Ambassador Carter Whittaker that "Zorasan will answer for this."
Valeins, Vallois - Foreign Minister Rufus Winterbottom issued a harsh condemnation of Zorasan following a chemical attack on a former Zorasani MP in Estmere last week, vowing that the "rogue" state of Zorasan will not "escape justice."

In a Saturday morning call with Estmerish Foreign Secretary Anne Buckett, Winterbottom discussed the attempted murder of former Zorsani Centrist MP Assad Ekarat in the cite centre of Kennford, according to a Foreign Affairs Department statement.

"We have full confidence in the Estmere's investigation and its assessment that Zorasan was likely responsible for the chemical attack that took place in Kennford last week," Winterbottom said in the statement.

He continued, "There is never a justification for this type of attack -- the attempted murder of a private citizen on the soil of a sovereign nation -- and we are outraged that Zorasan appears to have again engaged in such behavior. From Karzaristan to Subarna -- and now Estmere -- Zorasan continues to be an irresponsible force of instability in the world, acting with open disregard for the sovereignty of other states and the life of their citizens."

The Foreign Affairs Department confirmed in a statement issued this afternoon that Estmerish authorities presented the National Defence Council with "intimate details" concerning the assassination of Assad Ekarat, details that have reportedly been shared with Estmere's "global partners."

Earlier in the day, Winterbottom also spoke on the phone with Carter Whittaker, the Estmerish Ambassador to Valentir, assuring him that "Zorasan will answer for this."

Speaking to reporters while traveling in Coius, Winterbottom said the attack "clearly came from Zorasan" and would "certainly trigger a response." Though it is still unclear to the Foreign Affairs Department whether the Zorasani government was aware of the attack, the substance used in the attack was distinctive.

"This is a substance that is known to us and does not exist widely. It is only in the hands of a very, very limited number of parties. And I don't want to say anything further than that," Winterbottom said.
Winterbottom called for "appropriately serious consequences" for "both those who committed the crime and those who ordered it."

DEVEREAUX FAILS VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE, SENATE DISSOLVED.
After failing a vote of no-confidence vote called by his potential ally De Troumpe, Devereaux's Senate has been dissolved by the President.

Verlois, Gaullica.

The Traditional Coalition has met its end after the Senate was officially dissolved today by President Vallette. The move, a power held by the President as per Gaullica's constitution, was the natural result of Devereaux's government losing a vote of no confidence. Failing to bring the CLU within the coalition spelled the end of what was once known as the 'coalition of the winning', as they no longer supported the government as they had done earlier this month.

The failure to secure the CLU as new coalition partners was expected to bring about the end of the Traditional Coalition. This is why it came as a shock when De Troumpe announced that the TC had 'refused to give ground' and had approached the negotiating table without the intention to 'parlay.'

Devereaux reitorated that "this was not the case", and that "the government had done its best to bring the CLU into the coalition, but their demands were too excessive and not compatible with a conservative government." He added that their insistence that the Civil Service be expanded rahter than shrunk was a key crux in the breakdown of negotiations.

De Troumpe highlighted that "Devereaux -- OK -- he doesn't like when people don't listen to him. He didn't want to listen to my requests. Simple, easy requests. I don't know why he wouldn't want to cooperate, we asked for simple things."

The Senate opened today with another vote of no confidence in the government. This time the government did not have the support of the CLU to survive the ordeal, which began with De Troumpe declaring to the Senators that he felt -- and believed -- that the legislature and the nation no longer had faith in the government.

As is tradition, news of the results were first given to the President. Vallette entered the Senate as per custom and announced to the Chamber that: "The government's authority has been rejected, as this chamber no longer respects its authority and capacity to govern." A weary and exhausted Devereaux seemed composed, but his party was baying with anger.

The President then added that: "As per my rights and powers given to my position by the constitution, I hereby dissolve this ineffective Senate."

A snap election is expected to take place by the 10th of August, giving the parties -- including Barreau's infant PRCP -- little under a month to campaign.

Vallette's decision to dissolve the Senate have been criticsed by the right, arguing that the president has no considerations for the will of the people and he is abusing his powers due to his term almost being over. The President replied that he was within his constitutional rights to remove an ineffective and minority government.

This is the fourth time in Gaullican history since the establishment of the Republic that a Senate has been prematurely dissolved due to a failure in a vote of no confidence.

XAMENA ANNOUNCES VOTE-OF-NO-CONFIDENCE IN ESCUDERO'S LEADERSHIP

Image
Darios Xamena, the Floren Foreign Minister, made the announcement after 'intense consideration'.
Demora, Florena - CTS Leader and Premier Rosa Escudero is facing a potential challenge to her leadership of the party, as over 100 CTS Corts members sign a motion for a vote of no confidence.

Darios Xamena, the current Minister for Foreign Affairs and a senior member of the party, made the announcement at a press conference in Demora, though rumblings of discontentment had been heard from throughout the party since it's dismal performance in the recent Euclean elections, where it lost 19 seats.

"Poor electoral performance", "reckless foreign policy decisions" and a "general loss of support from the party rank and file" were all cited as reasons for the motion by its signatories.

Xamena himself cited his personal disdain for the Premier's governance style, and for her "consistent" over-ruling of his foreign policy advice, particularly in regards to Etruria, and more recently Jindao.

Roughly half of the current Council of Ministers signed onto the motion, including high profile figures such as Civic Affairs Minister Lluïsa Peralba, Justice Minister Pascual Burrull and Transport Minister Martí Anton.

First Speaker Melcion Auleda came out in defence of the Premier, citing her "undying commitment" to "advancing the syndicalist project", while deriding the signatories as "turkeys voting for Nativity". Economy Minister Lleó Casadesús and Health Minister Fe Motjé also made clear their support for the Premier.

From outside of the CTS, reactions have been mixed also. PSD Leader and current effective deputy-Premier (although no such rule exists in actuality) Alfons Casajoan made clear that he hoped "internal CTS party politics" would not impact the coalition government's capability to govern the nation effectively.

Catholic Democrat Leader Adam Escriva noted that he believed the Premier had made "significant mistakes" in her governance of the nation, but also declared that he "felt a certain kind of sympathy" for the embattled leader.

The Premier's office has yet to officially respond to the announcement.

If the motion passes among the CTS Corts members, it will lead to an election for the leadership of the CTS. As the incumbent leader, Escudero herself will be eligible to stand. Darios Xamena, Melcion Auleda and Lluïsa Peralba have been touted as potential leadership candidates. If Escudero loses the leadership contest, her position as Premier will become more tenuous; and her dismissal from the position will be possible if a supermajority of the Corts vote in favour. In such a case, elections for a new Premier will follow.

Foreign Minister condemns Zorasan; MPs call for sanctions in response

Image

Sirand, Mathrabumi- One of the most important international developments people all over the world and Mathrans alike have been concerned about is the chemical weapons attack in Estmere, alleged to be by Zorasan. In a recent press conference on Sunday a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry released an official statement concerning the attack.

The foreign ministry sees no reason why the Estmereish would falsify the results of the investigation, we fully trust the Estmerish on their allegations of the murder of Assad Erakat. Like all states should do Mathrabumi recognizes the sovereignty of other states, and their ability to dictate their own internal affairs. An assassination on foreign soil is a violation of Estmerish law, which Zorasan has no right to do. Any state attempting to engage a "long arm of justice" on foreign soil should be punished accordingly. The Foreign Ministry is considering potential sanctions against Zorasan and we ask other states to join us. No power should be allowed to conduct such reckless actions without consequence. Mathrabumi will fully stand by any nation in all capacity, which attempts to bring the rogue state of Zorasan to justice for this heinous murder.

The attack is believed to be rather sophisticated attack, with a substance that does not exist widely with a only limited amount of parties, if Estmerish officials are to be believed. To many analysts across the country this represents Zorasan's growing technological capacity, and the necessity of Mathrabumi to stay "one step ahead" on it's own research. "The country must invest more in research, lest even more powerful equipment is given to the Subarnans", as one policy analyst told Sixth Sense. He also said "we must be more mindful of internal security, our defenses must not be breached so easily as Estmere".

In the House of the People, MPs have floated around a new sanctions bill which would bar Mathrabumi from buying Zorasani oil and natural gas, and limit exports of both rice, and high technology components. Mathrabumi will also extend more support for Zorasani dissident groups, in order to "help create the conditions of the change of the Irfani regime". This event is expected to be a major test for the countries "Internationalists" who want to further cooperation with the EC, Estmere and the current established world order as a whole. Totalists have called the current response totally insufficient, seeing them as mostly symbolic measures which would have no significant impact without massive cooperation from the international community. We will continue coverage on the event as events unfold.

State President condemns Estmere and Mathrabumi in televised address

State President Vahid Isfandiar warned that the Union would respond to any “economic aggression"
Zahedan, Union Capital Territory-
State President Vahid Isfandiar has warned that the Union “will respond to any act of economic aggression” while also slamming Mathrabumi as a “greatest collaborator in rape of Coius.”

In a televised address to the nation, the State President described the domestic crisis over water shortages and the foreign situation developing over the murder of former MP, Assad Erekat, as “test of our collective strength and commitment to the ideals of our Union.”

“With the troubles in the South and the Estmerish plot to impede our nation’s rise, we are facing a great trial. It is a test of our collective strength and commitment to the ideals of our Union, which has prospered, much to the frustration of some powers who would wish us subordinate to them” he said.

The State President urged citizens to remain united and quoting the founding fathers said, “when we stand united as one nation and one people, in the world we find no equal. And that is as true today as it was during the Arduous Revolution when Zorasan was restored.”

In response to threats of sanctions from
Estmere and it’s puppet regime in Mathrabumi, he said, “to the government of Estmere through false accusations and lies has sought to create a crisis, and its lackeys in Sirand, I say this. Any economic aggression against the Union will be met with a response of equal measure. Do not underestimate our economic power.”

“Nor should citizens of the Union doubt the government’s power to retaliate and protect. We will never be careless in our duties to protect and defend our country and never will we allow aggression to go unanswered” he said further.

The head of state was also highly critical of Mathrabumi, who wasted no time in answering its masters call from Ashcombe in threatening its own sanctions.

“This a country who’s foreign ministry asserted its own respect for international law and sovereignty and yet the same day announced plans to violate the very same against the Union, by backing terrorists and criminal elements. This a country without soul or decency, it is a country who’s subordination and servitude to colonialism never ended. This is a country which constitutes the greatest collaborator in the rape of Coius, just as it is the biggest threat to Coian development and peace. If Estmere counts this country as an ally, let all Zorasanis and Coians know the plot at hand” he said.

Following the State President’s address, he chaired a meeting of the Council of State, where ministers agreed to begin formulating counter-measures to possible sanctions and retaliatory packages. The Ministry of State Security has announced that it will launch coordinated investigations into any Marathi-linked group, while the Ministry for the Petrochemical Industry announced it was putting workers on notice for a possible cut in oil and gas production. The Ministry for Trade and Industry also announced it was preparing to work toward replacing Marathi imports with Xiaodongese and Asterian goods.

Foreign Minister Javan Borazjani posted on social media, “Once again the Union denies any involvement in the death of Assad Erekat and once again reminds the international community of the danger of taking action on the basis of lies. The Union also wishes to express thanks and fraternal gratitude to Kazaristan, which remains a steadfast friend in face of Estmerish-Marathi plots.”

The Foreign Minister is expected to visit Adunis this week to discuss closer ties between the Union and Tsabara, he is now expected to raise the Erekat situation with President Tugluqh in hope of securing Tsabaran support.

Assad Erekat, a former Centrist MP who fled the Union in 2003 following his son’s arrest for subversive behaviour, was killed last week in the Estmerish city of Kennford.

More as the story develops.
