President Francesco Carcaterra in a televised address confirmed that last night’s nationwide anti-mafia raids was an “unmitigated success.” He confirmed that law-enforcement had arrested 1,503 suspects, seized and shuttered over 200 legitimate and illegal businesses, freed hundreds of women from prostitution and crippled the Corruption. He also revealed that 56 people had been killed in shootouts, including six law-enforcement personnel.

Etrurians awoke this morning to scenes never seen in before in modern history. Thousands of Federal, Auxiliary Police, Civil Security Service and units of the Etrurian Defence Force deployed across hundreds of towns and cities. Operation Gladio began at 10pm in the major cities, with Federal personnel launching over 200 raids on as many properties in search of suspected Mafiosi. This was followed by a further 366 raids across Etruria by elements of the Federal and Auxiliary Police Services, Civil Security Service and the Etrurian Defence Force.

During the raids, criminals engaged in shootouts with Federal personnel. One incident took place inside a popular wine bar in central Vicalvi, it was a prime target according to the full brief released by the Interior Ministry, owing to its “role as a meeting place, planning centre and central social hub for the Black Cross Society.” 11 criminals were killed inside the bar, while one CSS agent was also killed and two FPS officers injured.

The Etrurian Defence Force reportedly took part in the capture of Mauro Marini, Salvattore Lupe, Matteo Ballucci and Aldo Fini. These four were reportedly captured by EDF special forces in their coastal Palazzi. Fini’s capture resulted in the deaths of three of his bodyguards and the destruction of his home by an accidental fire.

The Interior Ministry also reported in its brief, that over 200 businesses had been raided, seized and shuttered under the CSA. These included barber shops, bars, restaurants, construction companies, illegal casinos, dance halls and brothels. Further properties, including home and large businesses, alongside financial and physical assets will be seized in due course.

Altogether, 1,503 individuals have been arrested and are being detained in makeshift prisons in isolated locations throughout Etruria. Under the recently passed Civil Security Act, they can be held without charge for 72 hours, though, pending judicial approval they can be held for a further week.

In his televised address, President Carcaterra said, “last night we honoured our vow, we kept our promise to rise up and confront the Mafiosi, the Corruption, that has plagued our greater fatherland for decades and generations. We said we would fight to clean out our system and bad cells and we did that.”

“Last night we saw the best in our brave men and women in uniform. The Federal Services conducted themselves with the upmost bravery, professionalism and commitment to the people’s cause. We saw them conduct the operation with seamless success and precision, which has decimated the Corruption and inflicted lasting damage on their operations and criminal enterprises. To the services, Etruria thanks you and Etruria salutes you” he said.

“Last night’s operation, aimed to inflict as much as damage upon the Corruption in one fell swoop, that has been achieved. In the process of the operation, 1,503 suspects were arrested and now in Federal custody. This high number guarantees severe damage and chaos to the Corruption, at all levels the mafia has suffered losses in fixers, fighters and killers. This level of disruption will be key in coming months as we pursue to use those in custody against the Corruption itself, those who escaped our grasp last night however, will soon join their brethren in detention” he said further.

“While we can all rejoice in our nation’s victory over the infection that has corruption and sucked off the system like the parasitic form that it is, we must not relent, this is just the beginning and we have much more work to do. In coming days, the full support and cooperation of the Etrurian people will be necessary, we will call upon you all to aid us in finishing off the infestation of corrupting individuals, any information or the location of suspects will be needed. Specialist phonelines will be established to allow citizens the opportunity to provide invaluable information. Together we will triumph over the Corruption” the President said.

However, the President was swift in his praise for the Federal personnel who died during the operation.

“It is with a heavy heart however, that I must confirm that in the process of conducting this operation, six brave personnel, six brave sons of Etruria were lost, sadly killed in the line of duty. I did not have sufficient words to offer comfort to the loved ones of those we lost, I don’t have the vocabulary worthy to honour them, for I never had the personal pleasure of knowing the officers. But Etruria salutes them, we shall honour them and cherish them, we shall remember them always.

“We will remember Lucca Salo, Davide Gemelli, Ettore Torelli, Marco Mercurio, Pietro Rossi and Tarquinio Scorza. These names shall be etched onto the walls of our national heroes and martyrs, though we pray for their families, let them also be praised for offering our country such courageous and resolute sons” he said.

“Now the fight continues, the struggle goes on and soon we find ourselves a nation liberated of criminality, for Etruria always. Long live Etruria and long live the Republic” he concluded.

Further details are expected to merge in coming days of the true extent of the operation’s success. While the Interior Ministry has declared two days of national mourning for the six officers killed in the operation.

Last week, the community of Catholics in Duquesne got to experience the presence of the Holy Father for the first time in Duquesne’s history. 2 weeks ago Sunday, Vice President d’Este released a joint statement with the Duquesne conference of Bishops and Cardinals announcing the Holy Father’s visit. The Holy Father arrived in Duquesne on Monday, August 20th, at the Grande Marecage Air Force Base early in the morning. He was greeted on the tarmac by the archbishop of Grande Marecage, as well as a large crowd of faithful Catholics waving papal flags, and attempting to catch a glimpse of the Holy Father. He traveled with the archbishop in a motorcade to the Cathedral of Saint Philip, where he said mass for priests and invited members of the Archdiocese of Grande Marecage. He touched on several different issues during the mass, most notably, the Grande Marecage Massacre, saying, "Never could one want this to happen. We must pray for them, their families -- and thank them from our hearts. We must praise God for their work and praise them for never failing in their line of duty." He then branched into the Ospletto incident, as well as JDF interaction in the Mariranan Insurgency, saying, "It cannot be denied that this tragedy that has hurt so many in Duquesne stems too from the evil conflict that the Mariranan Insurgency represents. War is nondiscriminatory, as we have been tragically reminded so often." The homily finished on lighter notes, where he thanked the people of Duquesne for their faithfulness to the church, and called for unity with the Mariranan people, their brothers and sisters in the faith. Following the mass, he met individually with the 15 families of the victims of the Grande Marecage Massacre, thanking them for their resilience, and offering them words of comfort and advice. He then began his personally requested, and highly anticipated, trip to the border wall with Marirana. Those close to the Holy Father say that he tried to remain in good spirits, interacting with the natives along the way, but eventually succumbed to a somber mood when he arrived at the border wall. He placed his hand on the wall, speaking of the solidarity that mankind must find during trying times as these, finishing with, “enough is enough”. Following his trip, he was hosted by the archbishop at the residence in Grande Marecage City for dinner, and ultimately the night.

On Tuesday morning, Pope Joseph boarded his airplane again, waving goodbye to the faithful gathered at the airbase, and traveled to Marquette. He was greeted by tens of thousands of faithful on the tarmac, as well as President Swen, Vice President d’Este, and the Archbishop of Marquette, Cardinal David Schwann. After several “photo ops”, the Holy Father walked alongside the fencing set up to hold the crowds of faithful gathered to welcome him, blessing the crowd, kissing babies, and shaking hands with as many people as he could. He then climbed into the “Pope Mobile” with Cardinal Schwann, and joined President Swen and Vice President d’Este’s motorcade down Gerard Row, the historic “Main Street” of Marquette, named by the first leader of Duquesne, Artur Gerard. The streets were lined with tens of thousands of people waving at the pope, and holding banners from their parishes and places that they traveled from. He was greeted at the steps of the Capital by the Chair of the National Assembly, Charles Douchel, who led him inside to the capital, where he was to deliver the first ever complete address to the Duquesne government, including National Assemblymen, Provincial Representatives, Provincial Governors, and Presidential Cabinet Members. He was greeted in the room by a several minute long standing ovation, where he again shook hands with everyone in his path as he made his way to the podium. The Pope began his address with a prayer, and a blessing to those who “faithfully serve the people of Duquesne” in public office. He began his speech talking about the de-isolation process, and the massive responsibility it gives to the elected officials, saying, “Coming into the global stage as a participating actor lends one to its great responsibilities”, adding that “I pray for the sake of your people that you make the right decisions, and that God provides you with the wisdom that you will need.” He then began to discuss the new role of Duquesne in the world, saying, “Duquesne is now needed to help the world in its fight against climate change, international injustices and crime”, and, “We are all one in Sotiras.” The pope finished his 30 minute address by saying, “It was a pleasure to be hosted here by president Swen, a welcome host. An honour to address the nation of Duquesne — and I feel it is only fitting that the church helps you accommodate to the global world.” Once the pope finished speaking, he again blessed those gathered, who in turn, gave him another long standing ovation. From the event, Pope Joseph traveled with President Swen and Vice President d’Este to the Presidential Mansion in the motorcade, again having the opportunity to wave to the thousands of faithful gathered in the streets to see him. Upon arrival at the Presidential Mansion, Pope Joseph had lunch with President Swen’s cabinet to discuss issues, before moving into a private meeting with President Swen that lasted over 2 hours. After the meeting, Pope Joseph and President Swen had a press conference to talk about their meeting, and what they discussed. The most notable issue discussed was the new immigration policy, and while no changes to the policy were announced during the conference, President Swen said that “Myself and my cabinet will be taking another thorough look at our immigration policies, and will inform the public if any changes are actually made.” Following the Press Conference, Pope Joseph went for a Holy Hour of prayer at the Basilica of the Cross of Christ in downtown Marquette. During this time, the mansion staff set up the stage for the dinner hosted by President Swen and Cardinal Schwann, joined by Presidential Cabinet members, and members of the clergy. They were treated to a performance by the Duquesne National Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Marques Benedicti, as they dined on their meals. Following a closing prayer, the Pope returned with his entourage to Cardinal Schwann’s residence, where they spent the night.

On Wednesday morning, the final day of the papal visit, Pope Joseph traveled back to the Basilica of the Cross of Christ in downtown Marquette for a special mass. Government officials including President Swen, representatives and assemblymen, clergymen, as well as tens of thousands of faithful both in the Basilica and on the outside streets participated in the mass. Clergymen have been raving about his homily from the moment it was delivered, calling it “the spiritual guidance the people of Duquesne have lacked for so long”. Pope Joseph called for all Duquesnians to “keep the faith in these trying international times. Pray to God for peace in the world, pray for improved relations in the region, and to pray for the welcoming acceptance of all of God’s children, regardless of origin, into society.” Following the mass, Pope Joseph traveled to the Verte Railroad Arena in downtown Marquette, where he addressed the Duquesne Conference of Catholic Bishops and Cardinals. In his address, Pope Joseph called on unity with the faithful around the world, saying, “Let us stand in unity with the faithful across the world; we must remind ourselves that faith crosses borders and crosses mentalities. It unites us, as people.” He also announced a number of additional cardinal and bishop assignments, and closed the event by speaking to all currently enrolled seminarians in Duquesne. He told them to “Trust that God has put you where He wants you”, and to, “ask for God’s guidance as you continue your journey towards a lifetime of public ministry and service”. Finally, after his address, he traveled back down Gerard Row one last time, where he blessed the faithful chanting his name, and waving at the “Pope Mobile” as it drove past them. He arrived at Marquette International Airport, where he was sent off by President Swen, Vice President d’Este, and Cardinal Schwann, as well as another crowd of faithful gathered on the tarmac waving papal flags. Before he entered the plane, he blessed those on the ground for the last time, before shouting over the plane engines, “God Bless The Republic of Duquesne”.

The historic papal visit is being called a “complete success” by Cardinal Schwann, and the Presidential Mansion, saying, “It was a privilege to host the Holy Father here in Duquesne, and he is always welcomed and should be encouraged to return”. For the millions of Duquesne’s Catholics, this was the first opportunity to see the Holy Father on Duquesne’s soil; a moment of inspiration and progress in the continued de-isolation movement.

Prominent Salamic Cleric, Imam Farid Nazanzadeh has been shot dead outside a prominent Salamic Study Centre in the southern city of Centuripe. According to the Federal Police Service, the cleric was visiting the Centre and led a seminar on Salamic studies, as he approached his hire-car to return to Sarenia, he was confronted by a 26-year old Etrurian man, who shot him point-blank range. The 66-year old cleric died from his wounds at the scene.
Image
File photo: Imam Farid Nazanzadeh had travelled to Centuripe to give a talk at the Salamic Centre.

The Imam had arrived in Etruria two days ago to give a speech at the Zaeeda Zainab Salamic Centre in Centuripe, a prominent and popular institution for Koranic studies and theological debate. It was opened in 2011 by the then President Emiliano Reali, as a message of “inclusiveness” and “multi-culturalism.” As a result, the Centre has been a prominent target for the far-right. In 2017, Tarpeia’s First Minister, Nero Orlando (TM), threatened to shut the centre down saying, “this place is a dangerous threat to national security and a thorn in the side of sectarian peace.”

He was reportedly staying with the Centre’s director, arriving at the Centre this morning. There he gave a speech on Salamic traditions and values of being open with the faith. He ate lunch with members and guests from Centuripe’s Salamic community. At 13.22pm, he exited the Centre to return to Sarenia, when he was confronted by Arcangelo Vespucci, a 26-year old dock worker. After a brief exchange of words, Vespucci pulled a firearm and shot the Imam point-black range in the head, the cleric was killed instantly. Numerous bystanders responded to the gunshot by shouting at Vespucci, while those inside the Centre rushed out to investigate. Fortunately, a Federal Police patrol was a short-distance away, enabling them to confront Vespucci and arrest him.

Vespucci has been charged with murder and remanded without custody according to a statement by the Tarpeian Command for the Federal Police Service (TCFPS).

In the statement it read, “at 13.25pm this afternoon, a 26-year old male confronted a 66-year old Sarenian national and shot him dead outside the Zaeeda Zainab Salamic Centre in the Positrano quarter of Centuripe. The victim unfortunately died at the scene before paramedics could arrive.

“A murder investigation has now been launched and the 26-year old male has been charged with murder. We have informed the Sarenian embassy. We offer our prayers and thoughts for the victim’s family” it said further.

Two hours ago, the FPS identified the victim as Imam Nazanzadeh and the suspect as Vespucci. A quick investigation by this paper has revealed that Vespucci, a native of Centuripe had been involved with numerous far-right groups in the city and across Tarpeia. He also served time in prison between 2010 and 2013 for assault, after he and a gang of six others savagely beat an Ariot couple in the northern Tarpeian city of Lissa.

Most recently, Vespucci was given a caution after he and members of the Etrurian Black Sun Ultra graffitied a Mosque with Revolutionary Republic era slogans. The EBSU has become a household name in Centuripe for its attacks on Salamics and Mosques. Last week, the EBSU was almost banned from attending Liga football games after they chanted the infamous “Etruria over Salamics, Solaria over Salamic dead.”

Although the murder of Imam Nazanzadeh has brought to light the growing levels of racism and salamophobia in Tarpeia, which hosts one of the largest populations of Salamics in Etruria, it is not the first racially motivated murder in Etruria.

The EC-referendum and subsequent rise of the far-right Tribune Movement to government unleashed levels of racism and abuse not seen since the 1970s. In November 2016, a group of human rights activists established the Innocent Watch, a non-profit NGO that documents racist attacks in Etruria. Since the election in 2016, which brought the Tribunes to power, there have been over 8,600 racist incidents in Etruria, with 47 racially motivated murders since the same time. This is an increase of 111% from the same time in 2015.

The FPS, the Tribune Movement and the Federal Government have refused to comment on the murder, which may well spark a crisis with Sarenia, which holds its clerics in high esteem.

PLATERDAM QUAKE AFTERSHOCK CAUSES DEADLY TIDAL WAVE
Image

Braubach Island- Breaking news, a few weeks after a strong earthquake struck Platerdam to our south, a powerful 6.7 aftershock quake occurred much closer to our shores two days ago. It didn't do any damage itself, but a tidal wave formed swiftly in the deep waters, and while those on Braubach Island's southern shores were going out on a fine morning, a terrible wave was sighted in the distance, heading towards the Coiatown shore, and Golden Beach. Estimated to be a shocking 25 meters tall when first seen, the tidal wave crashed into the shores around 10:50 AM. It flooded through roads, into houses and buildings, and into the small port. Small boats were ripped apart along with beachside huts. Many cars were sucked away into the ocean as the waters surged through Dockside Golden Beach. Emergency Services were alarmed quickly, but there was nothing they could do to stop the flow of Mother nature as it ravaged the island's second largest town. 3 brave Emergency servicemen died saving others, and they have all been due posthomous awards.

As the waters recceded and the ruin on the streets and shoreline became evident, the Coast Guard and Army was called to search through the collapsed buildings and overturned cars. They found 22 dead, 119 injured, and over 100 more are missing. President Korze has called for a nationwide state of emergency, and a time of mourning for those who died or are missing at this time of crisis. Over 1,000,000,000 lummarks in damage has been caused and that number is rapidly rising along with the casualties. Hospitals further inland in Golden Beach are working round the clock to save the lives of the injured, of which 42 are in a critical state, in the past few hours 9 have died from injuries. Medical and recovery resources are dwindling as the recovery effort pushes on.

The tsunami did not only affect Golden Beach. Smaller waves went as far as 100 meters inland across the southern seaboard of Braubach Island and large waves were even reported on New Ruttland's southern beaches. Nobody has died as a result of these sub-waves, but up to 10 boats are missing at sea and a debris search is underway. Only one has been recovered, with one crew member dead. The earthquake itself was very shallow, at just a few kms underground, around 180 km from Braubach Island. It did not directly affect any land, although ships and boats have reported strong shaking at sea. The tsunami may have struck Platerdam's shores, but it is unknown as of yet. The Government has reached out to surrounding nations, with better ability to solve such a crisis, to aid the people of Braubach in this dark hour. This is N3, stay with us for more news.

Prominent Cleric Assassinated in Etruria

Protesters have been outside the Etrurian embassy since news of Imam Farid’s death was reported Thursday

Shahamabad, The Sublime Hasemid State — On Thursday afternoon, prominent Salamic speaker and scholar, Sheyk Rajpari Farid Nazanzadeh was assassinated by the Etrurian state in the city of Centuripe, located in the south of the nation.

Sheyk Farid, an Imam from the rural fishing community of Rajpar, was visiting the Zaeeda Zainab Salamic Centre located in the Mutadin quarter of the city as part of the centre’s interfaith programme. The programme was started following the vandalisation of a nearby mosque and aims to help ease sectarian issues between the Mutadin and Sotirian communities living in Centirupe. Following the conclusion of Sheyk Farid’s talk, he ate lunch with some of the attendees and administrators of the religious centre. Upon exiting the centre, witnesses say Imam Farid was confronted by an Etrurian SSN agent posing as a dock worker and summarily shot in the head point-blank.

Sheyk Farid’s murder has caused national outrage throughout The Sublime Hasemid State. Following the news of the assassination, protesters gathered outside the Etrurian embassy in Shahamabad, where they have been since.

Upon confirmation of Sheyk Farid’s death by members of his family Friday evening, the Combatant Clergy Movement, which Imam Farid was a member of, issued a statement grossly condemning the “senseless murder of an upstanding, pious man.”

“First, they silence their domestic opponents by passing a law that forbids them from teaching their youth of their heinous crimes against Mutadins during the Solarian War, and now they seek to silence their international critics by murdering them in broad daylight,” Imam Jikati Tanvir Hardasinejad, a close friend of Sheyk Farid, told our reporter when reached for a comment.

“Etruria is not only an enemy of Sarenia, but also of the entire Salamic world.”

A small, vocal minority have been calling on His Imperial Majesty to request the extradiction of the Etrurian assassin, Arcangelo Vespucci, to Sarenia to be tried for his crimes and for his estate to pay a diya to the Imam’s family.

Imarati Mirjahan Molla, a prominent mullah and former member of the Interordinate Relations Vizierate, has started an online petition formally requesting the Imperial Government to do such.

“The crime was committed in Centirupe’s Salamic quarter,” Sheyk Mirjahan wrote. “Ergo, it does not fall within Etruria’s jurisdiction and its temporal laws do not apply to the crime. Instead the [murderer] must be sent to Sarenia, where he can be tried in a sharia court and in front of a Mutadin jury.”

So far the petition has gathered nearly 30,000 signatures.

In light of the murder, the Imperial embassy in Poveglia has issued a travel advisory for Etruria while recommending all Sarenians currently visiting Etruria exercise caution. The Interordinate Relations Vizierate has instructed Imperial consulates in Etrurian republics to assist Sarenian citizens that wish to return immediately.

Gianfranco Galizia: "Claims that Positrano isn't within our national jurisdiction is a worrying fantasy by Salamic extremists"
Head of the right-wing M26N party has called for an investigation into the possible plot by Sarenia to export sharia law to Etruria through migration.

Leader of the M26N, Representative Gianfranco Galizia has described the semi-official response from Sarenia over the killing of Imam Nazanzadeh as “definitive proof of the Salamic plot to export sharia law here to Etruria.” His comments follow that of Mirjahan Molla, a prominent religious extremist who shockingly claimed the owing to the Positrano Quarter being majority Salamic, meant it was not under the jurisdiction of the Etrurian government and therefore must result in the suspect, Arcangelo Vespucci being extradited to be tried under Shariah law.
Image
Rep. Galizia made the comments during a press conference at the Chamber of Representatives.

Speaking with several M26N politicians at the Chamber of Representatives today, Galizia told reporters, “I will be stressing to the Chamber in the next session, the importance of rejection this fantasy shared by religious extremists in Sarenia that regions of our cities that host large numbers of immigrants from Salamic countries, are not under our own jurisdiction. Not only is this fantasy utterly outlandish but deeply concerning.”

“This is a clear admission by a prominent figure in the Sarenian government, that they seek to export Shariah law and subjugate Etruria and later all of Euclea under their oppressive and tyrannical creeds. We need to be aware of this and take necessary action to investigate this, whether this constitutes a significant national security threat” he said further. When asked to elaborate, the M26N leader explained, “well we need to look to see if groups exist that support this plot, we need to investigate the extent immigration is key to this plot, we need to see if this plot is legitimate.”

When asked his opinion of the request by the senior cleric, Mirjahan Molla, that the suspect, Arcangelo Vespucci be extradited to Sarenia because of his earlier statement of Positrano not being under Etrurian jurisdiction, Rep. Galizia said, “no legitimate or patriotic Etrurian government would ever extradite or offer up one of its citizens, regardless of wrongdoing to a country like Sarenia, nor offer them up to face the barbaric and unfair practices they use.”

“If this man is extradited, I would expect and demand that this government cease to exist. But fortunately, this government is a patriotic and legitimate one. Perhaps the ones before would have handed him over and begged for mercy, but not this one. What happened was unfortunate and I am sure the justice system will be fair and right” he said further.

"This is the obvious consequence of what the liberals unleashed on us for almost forty years, unrelenting and uncontrolled migration from Coius and Hydana. They've brought this sad affair down upon us, rather than take responsibility for their guilt in this matter, they've stuck to condemning this government and spreading fake news about racism. This isn't racism, this honest realism about the farce they've brought about. Now we're looking at a fifth column inside our own borders, they've done this, this is yet another crime committed against the Etrurian people by the liberal globalists" he said.

Imam Farid Nazanzadeh was shot dead outside the Zaeeda Zainab Salamic Centre in the Positrano Quarter of Centuripe two days ago. He arrived in Etruria two days prior to his death to give a speech at the Salamic Centre. According to eye-witnesses, as he left the Centre to return home to Sarenia via the Unificazione International Airport, he was confronted by 26-year old Arcangelo Vespucci who shot him point-black range following a verbal exchange.

He was arrested at the scene and is facing charges of murder. Following the 2017 Capital Punishment Referendum, murder is now a capital offence.

The Federal government has yet to make an official state on the murder of Imam Farid Nazanzadeh.

Verlois, Gaullica -

Today, Gaullicans go to the voting booth to vote in Gaullica's senatorial elections. These elections, which take place every four years, use a system of MMP (Mixed Member Proportional) and voters are equipped with two votes at their disposal. One of these is for a direct candidate, the other a party list. Once every direct candidate is given a seat in the First Chamber of the Senate, party list votes are tallied and percentages of the vote are established -- then parties are awarded seats to ensure as close to proportionality with the vote as possible.

Furthermore, in Gaullica, voting is compulsory -- and has been since the end of the Great War, when Albert III and his Catholic Labour Union reformers followed through with their "anti-reactionary and extremist" policy of 'Mandatory Democracy.'

2018 has seen a great rise and fall in popularity from the various high-tier contending parties, nominally the Social Democrats and the Gaullican Conservatives. The Social Democrats began the year with the lowest popularity rate they had since coming into office, but quickly rebounded with the referenda in Nouvel Anglet and the IDS.

The Gaullican Conservatives have been on a steady rise in popularity ever since the election of 'no-nonsense' politician Hugo-Noel Devereaux to the position of party leader following the financial scandal that brought his predecessor to ruin. His 'clean-up' of the party, hounding out individuals for similar crimes and replacing them, was seen in an immensely positive light.

The SDs rise in popularity took a hit later on in the year, especially following what became known as #AbortionGate -- with the Social Democrats seen as complacent in the nun's abuse of women on one hand and on the other as attempting to remove the church from Gaullica's civil service. In addition, the resulting row within the governing coalition between Prime Minister Abdulrashid and Foreign Minister De Troumpe, which even stemmed into a break on Euclean Policy on behalf of the Foreign Minister, made the government look weak.

The Conservative's consistent message, without 'flip-flopping' to popularity, saw them as stalwart and stable in comparison to the government.

Additionally, numerous pundits have argued that the 'pendulum swing of politics' will result with a victory of the Gaullican Conservatives today.

Notable political scientist Ludovic Jaubert highlighted that "its been... 12 years of almost uncontested dominance of the First Chamber by the Social Democrats; either by themselves -- which is highly irregular -- or in coalition."

The head-office of the Independente Osservatore has been raided by the Civil Security Service and its owner, multi-billionaire mogul, Ugo Ebbasta, has been arrested. According to social media posts by Osservatore staff, the CSS arrived shortly after 9am and began searching offices and documents. The CSS has since reported that, “the Independente Osservatore is now under formal investigation for direct links to the Mafia.”
Image
Osservatore owner, Ugo Ebbasta being escorted by police outside his home after his arrest.

At 9.03am, officers of the CSS, supported by the Federal Police Service arrived outside the Osservatore’s head-office in San Alessandro and entered the premises with a federal-warrant. They immediately began searching offices and cubicles, ordering staff to stand next to walls. Social media posts and videos were rapidly posted revealing the CSS’ thorough search of the office. They also began seizing computers and laptops from the HR department and Treasury Department.

At 09.09am, according to a CSS statement, the owner of the Osservatore, Ugo Ebbasta was arrested at his lavish home in central San Alessandro. He has been arrested under charges of “association with organised crime.”

The Osservatore’s treasurer, Lucia D’Amato has also been arrested under the same charges. She was arrested at the Head Office, videos show her being escorted out of the building in handcuffs.

In a statement by the CSS’ spokesman, the raid was “an official and legal operation aimed at securing evidence of the organisation’s and its owner’s collaboration and direct links to the Mafia. This operation is being conducted under the federally mandated Operation Gladio. Our actions today are guaranteed under the Civil Security Act and our investigation is ongoing.

“It is our belief through evidence seized during the first phase of Operation Gladio, that the newspaper, owned by Ugo Ebbasta, has direct financial links to the Mafia. It is our understanding thus far, that Ebbasta’s property development business has been in league with crime syndicates since the 1990s and that mafia money was lent to allow Ebbasta to purchase Osservatore. Profits from Osservatore have been used by Ebbasta to repay his debts over its purchase. Under the Civil Security Act, any organisation or entity, corporate or otherwise, that provides income to organised crime is liable for closure or seizure” he said.

Staff members have reportedly begun work on a petition to protect the newspaper from being closed down or seized by the federal government. This has already been picked up by the Citizens’ Alliance, which has warned the government in a statement on its website, “any decision or movement toward the closure or seizure of a major national newspaper will bring the government’s intentions in combatting organised crime into strict repute.”

However, Ugo Ebbasta has been a controversial figure throughout his life. Reportedly worth $3.4 billion, he made his fortune during the economic reforms of the 1980s and 1990s, building up one of the country’s largest property development businesses. His businesses, Equinozio, grew to become the biggest developer of hotels and resorts, booming in coastal-Novalia and Insular Vespasia. During the “Tourist-Building Boom”, many rivals and competitors claimed Equinozio was in league with crime syndicates, using Mafia produced building materials and construction teams, though he and his company was never investigated.

In 2014, eager to “diversify his passion”, he sought to buy-out the Osservatore from the San Alessandro-native Gemelli Family. After six months of legal wrangling and negotiation, Ebbasta bought the newspaper for $553 million. At the time, Ebbasta’s personal finances were subject to great speculation and rumour, having just divorced his second wife in a $1.1 billion settlement, the largest in Etrurian history, many commentators at the time were questioning how he personally afforded to purchase the newspaper.

These doubts were further heightened with the reveal that the Gemelli family wishing to preserve the ‘independent’ nature of Osservatore, caveated that Ebbasta purchase the paper with his own money, rather than through his Equinozio Holdings. It is this issue, that gives credence to the CSS’ investigation of him and Equinozio.

Despite the controversy over its purchase, the paper retained much of its journalistic independence, and has been widely lauded by plaudits for its non-partisan nature, though it has become the target of criticism by the far-right for its more forceful condemnation of the Tribune government.

While concern for Ebbasta and Equinozio is limited mostly to his shareholders and investors, concern for Osservatore is more palpable. Under the Civil Security Act, companies owned or linked directly to organised crime can face either being closed or seized by the state. According to reports released by the Federal Ministry of Justice, since Operation Gladio was launched two weeks ago, over 300 companies and properties have either been shut down or seized by the state, a total of $1.13 billion worth of assets now rests in federal government hands.

With concern becoming loud, the Federal Ministry of Justice has released a statement indicating that, “the future of Osservatore rests with the Civil Security Service and the Joint-Ministry Committee, any decision on how to deal with Osservatore will take on board its national prominence and role in civil society.”

The statement has already been criticised for its vagueness and lack of concrete guarantees the paper will remain in operation. A source inside the JMC (a body comprised of officials from the Interior and Justice ministries, overseeing Operation Gladio), has revealed that Osservatore will either be placed on sale to be bought by another entity or individual or be placed by Federal Administration. The same source did confirm that no member of staff outside the treasury department will face charges.

The Chief Editor of the Osservatore, Pierluigi Marano tweeted, “we will be giving a statement through an editorial in tomorrow’s print. Pray for us.”

A word of solidarity from Il Popolo

While it is said that newspapers in Etruria hate each other as much as our perceived political-ideological rivals, we all share great respect and care for one another. Collectively we form the Fourth Estate, an integral institution vital for Etrurian democracy. While some papers may bulk at that suggestion and further tighten their embrace of nefarious forces in this country, it is true.

No matter the criminality of Ugo Ebbasta, our colleagues and friends at the Independente Osservatore have no such charges against them. The paper should be preserved and protected, it is innocent of Ebbasta’s criminality. No matter the urges and inclinations of those in power today, never should an esteemed and passionate force for freedoms and liberties be punished or destroyed for its aloof owner’s flaws and poor choices.

If Osservatore is closed or seized by the government, then the precedent will be set, the fuse will be lit. Our fears and worries over the true meaning behind Operation Gladio will be confirmed and our living nightmare will only worsen. The Tribunes have a simple choice now, do they dare?

Tribune Movement State Councillor, Giorgio Solariano has been shot dead outside his home in an apparent assassination. The 44-year old politician was leaving his home for the State Council when he was shot dead by an unknown assailant. His family called the emergency services, however, the politician died of his wounds at the scene. President Carcaterra has released a statement praising State Councillor Solariano’s public service and vowed to apprehend the killers.

The attack took place 07.22am as the State Councillor left his rented apartment in the Poveglian-lagoon town of San Eugenio sulla Baia. Three gunshots were heard by neighbours and his family, who ventured outside to investigate. The State Councillor was found slumped by his car bleeding profusely. Neighbours reported seeing a 4x4 speed away moments after the gunshots were heard, indicating that this was a pre-mediated murder. His wife immediately called emergency services, who arrived ten minutes later, however, the State Councillor was declared deceased at the scene.

Federal Police arrived a few minutes later and cordoned off the area. Within ten minutes of their arrival, the incident was classified as a murder investigation.

Commander of the San Eugenio sulla Baia division of the Federal Police, Tullio Dolce gave a statement outside division HQ, saying, “at 07.22am this morning, State Councillor Giorgio Solariano was shot dead by unknown assailants outside his home on Santa Maria Street in San Eugenio sulla Baia. He was shot three times and sadly died at the scene. We are treating this incident as a politically motivated murder.

“At this time we cannot comment further on our investigation, however, I wish to offer our condolences and prayers for the State Councillor’s family and friends in this difficult time. We will bring justice and we will pursue his killers” he said further.

News of the State Councillor’s murder has sent shockwaves throughout the political world, with President Francesco Carcaterra giving a brief statement to reporters saying, “we are truly shocked and horrified at this ruthless and senseless murder of a committed public servant and colleague. The Tribune Movement has lost a warrior, brother and comrade in arms. We offer our thoughts and prayers for his wife Ersilia and his two daughters Caterina and Rosa.”

The President then moved to chair a meeting of the Federal Emergency Affairs Committee, where he was informed of the incident in greater detail by law enforcement.

First Minister of Vespasia, Emmanuele Marconi has also given a statement saying, “our democracy and our country has lost a significant man, a giant of public service. Giorgio Solariano was a brave and bold thinker, a brilliant mind, a decent and kind man who cared for his constituents, his country and the future of our people. His murder will not go unpunished, may we all stand together in prayer for his family, who have lost a husband and a father.”

The death of State Councillor Solariano is the first political assassination since 2005, when the ethnic Ariot politician, Representative Kyrillos Axiotis was shot-dead by a member of the Lupine Legion, a far-right group formerly based in Tarpeia.

State Councillor Solariano has represented the Vespasia Centre III seat since 2013, being one of the first Tribunes to be popularly elected following its founding in 2012. During his tenure, he secured a prominent position on the Senatorial Committee for Industrial Affairs, before becoming Chairman of the Senatorial Committee for Finance and the Economy in 2015.

His assassination will renew calls for the government to restore personal protection for all elected federal representatives. The provision was ended in 2012 by the Emiliano Reali administration in name of money-saving efforts, while others in his administration claimed that it would end the sense of detachment by politicians. Personal protection officers are only provided for Federal Ministers and Under-Secretaries.

Further pressure will come if the Federal Police determine the murder to have been the work of the Mafia, which has vowed retaliation against the government for Operation Gladio, which is still ongoing. When asked for comment on any Mafia leads, the Federal Police Service refused to comment, citing “ongoing investigations are commented upon at appropriate times.”

Vice President Vittoria Vasari has told ARE News, that “should there be a mafia link to the brutal killing of my friend, then be assured that Operation Gladio will step up. This is not the 1980s, this is not the 1970s and this government is not weak, we won’t backdown to these animals.”

State Councillor Solariano’s seat will be run by his office until First Minister Emmanuele Marconi declares a by-election.

More as the story develops.

Breaking News
Macron to Join Swen Campaign to Form A Coalition Government

Earlier this morning, President Marques Swen announced with presidential candidate Arthur Macron that they would be running on the Presidential ticket together. In his speech, Arthur Macron said, “The astounding performance of the Swen administration in the past few months, with strengthening our borders and establishing a multi-billion dollar trade deal, is something that should not be tampered with. I am announcing my joining the Marques Swen Presidential campaign as Vice Presidential nominee to ensure that a government is elected to represent all Duquesnians. I am excited to work with President Swen to win re-election, and to begin my service to the nation.” Marques Swen spoke as well at the event, calling Macron’s entry to the campaign “unprecedented”, saying, “Mr. Macron’s decision to enter our campaign is truly remarkable. This coalition government will appeal to all Duquesnians, whether you are a farmer or a city dweller. The Swen-Macron administration promises to be even more successful than our current, because working together, we will be able to pass more legislation, confirm new judges and other government workers, and be the best servants of the people with our increased number of votes in this new Christian Democratic-Agrarian coalition.”
However, critics, along with other members of both parties, are calling the move “Dangerously divisive”. Maria Le-Pen-Dune, leader of the Working Families Front, released a statement, saying, “This announcement is a danger to the people of Duquesne. The people in the Working Families Front, the Cooperativist Party, the Conservative Party, the Populist Party, and the Reform party will not have a voice again in Duquesne’s politics if this bloc is successful in the election. I call on my colleagues in the Duquesne National Assembly to call an emergency meeting regarding election rules and processes.”

If the coalition government is elected, which is highly likely, this will give Marques Swen a third presidential term, and will give the bloc a supermajority in the National Assembly, which will allow for easy passing of legislation favorable to the administration. However, many members of the Agrarian party are outraged, as the party already had the votes to win the presidency without joining President Swen in a coalition government. Agrarian party Vice-President, Davide Mueria, announced his candidacy for President shortly after the press conference by Macron and Swen, saying, “Arthur Macron has betrayed the people of the Agrarian party. I am announcing my candidacy to save our chances in this election, in order to end the would-be Swen monarchy in Duquesne.”

Here are the SRG’s latest Presidential Polls:
CD-AP Coalition: President Marques Swen, Vice Presidential Nominee Arthur Macron. Popular Poll: 78% Electoral Probability: 40% (6/15 votes)
Agrarian Party (Separate of Coalition): Presidential Candidate Davide Mueria, Vice Presidential Candidate Jacques Sueman. Popular Poll: 21% Electoral Probability 40% (6/15 votes)
Working Families’ Front: Presidential Candidate Marie Le-Pen-Dune, Vice Presidential Candidate Elizabeth Johansen. Popular Poll: 1% Electoral Probability 20% (3/15 votes)

Meraviglia Scandal: Former President Emiliano Reali's trial begins
Disgraced former President faces 28 charges including embezzlement, bribery and money laundering.

The trial of former President Emiliano Reali has begun today at the Central Court of Justice in Viclavi. The disgraced former leader of Etruria faces up to 70 years in prison for embezzlement, bribery, falsifying federal documents and money laundering. His trial is the first of twenty because of the Meraviglia Scandal, yet, despite the requests of the Tribune Movement government, the trial will not be televised. Reali had earlier pleaded not-guilty.
Image
The trial is being held at the Central Court of Justice in Vicalvi.

Emiliano Reali arrived at the CCJ at 08.00am from the San Dolfino Detention Facility, where has he been held since the Pietramontecorvino Incident in May. Appearing in prisoner-smocks he looked thin and gaunt compared to his fulsome figure only last year. He was placed in the defendant’s seat beside his defence team before the three state prosecutors. For security reasons the identity of the prosecutors is being withheld, through fear of intimidation or violence.

As Mr. Reali had pled not-guilty last week, his is now expected to undergo a thorough cross-examination by the prosecutors, while his defence is reportedly claiming that he was unaware of the Meraviglia plot by members of his administration and that the evidence against his circumstantial and prejudiced. It is not yet known what witnesses the defence will bring forward, owing to the fact that most of those closely aligned with the president are also facing trials over their involved in the Scandal.

The first day saw the opening statements of the prosecution, with the denunciation of his suspected involvement. A statement by one prosecutor said, “this scandal is one of the largest ever perpetrated by an elected administration in sheer financial gain, we have it on record that over ₣1.1 billion was stolen by the defendant’s administration, either through the embezzlement of federal funds for infrastructure or gained illegally through money laundering. Not only did this money fail to reach the appropriate projects, it was ripped from the families who had their homes stolen to make way for fake projects, this was a conspiracy to enrich that encompassed both the private and public spheres and reaches to the very heights of Etrurian society.”

The Scandal began in 2011 when the Reali Administration passed the Federal Transportation and Infrastructure Development Act (FTIDA), which granted the Federal Government the power of eminent-domain for properties and land earmarked for major infrastructure development. Properties and land would be bought at market value, without allowing residents the right to contest the government’s purchase legally, those who refused would be granted a below-market rate and dispossessed.

Initially the FTIDA was set to be deemed unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court in line with articles on private property however, the scandal took its first form with the bribery of the four justices sacked by the Tribune Movement government in April, specifically for the bribes they took to rule in favour of the FTIDA. Once passed, the Reali Administration used it to at first legitimately purchase property earmarked for the development of mountains roads and highways in southern Novalia.

In 2012, however, the Reali Administration began to use the FTIDA to purchase property in isolated regions of Vespasia and Tarpeia for infrastructure projects that didn’t exist. The administration relied on the then Transportation Minister, Giancarlo Renzi, to officially sign off plans and contracts, that were then handed to the Meraviglia Construction Services company, a company owned by Reali’s close friend, Marco Gentiloni. MCS would then receive Federal Grants for the project, which would then be distributed to both legitimate and front companies owned by Gentiloni, some of which were partially owned by Reali and key administration officials, including Renzi and Vice President Andrea Salvini.

By 2014, over 25 front companies were set up to receive laundered and federal money, including 14 fake construction companies that were granted contracts worth over ₣50 million. When the Federal Auditing Service sought to investigate the FTIDA related projects, the then-head of the FAS, Anna Stakic, was bribed with payments worth ₣500,000 over a two month period in 2015.

The scandal first broken when the head of the Santa Augusta Commune in southern Vespasia reported Federal Ministry for Transportation and Development that a tunnel through harsh terrain earmarked under the FTIDA had not even been started yet, a senior-level civil servant alerted the FAS. Another senior FAS official reported the case to Stakic, who dismissed it, citing probable delays. The FAS official then passed the case onto the then Federal Directorate for Corruption, who investigated the company awarded the contract, it found Virgilio Construction had no headquarters or any listed employees and as a resulted, launched the investigation that would come to break the Scandal.

In 2016, the Tribune government dissolved the Federal Directorate for Corruption and placed its powers and responsibilities with the newly formed Civil Security Service who stepped up the investigation and in 2017, placed charges against former President Emiliano Reali and twenty other administration officials.

Despite calls by Justice Minister Viktor Robar, the Federal Prosecution Service rejected requests for a televised trial. FPS head, Tazio Scarsella told ARE 1 News, “to televise the trial would frankly enflame the situation and bring unwanted and unnecessary tension into the proceedings. While we respect the benefits of televised trials and while it is common practice for major court cases to be televised, this would be inappropriate and could easily lead to situations that may endanger the personal safety of individuals.”

The FPS later released copies of emails and letters sent by unknown individuals who issued death threats to the prosecutors, over claims the trial is a “sham” and “Tribune kangaroo court.”

The FPS has allowed journalists to attend the trial, while placing restrictions on what can be published. Transcripts of proceedings will be released weekly to the public.

If found guilty of all 28 charges, Reali could face a maximum of 70 years imprisonment without parole according to the FPS statute-book.

We will provide a breakdown of the trial as it progresses.

STATE POLICE CLASH WITH FUNCTIONALISTS IN POST-TSUNAMI BRAUBACH

Image
The flooded streets of Braubach City after the tsunami are seeing a new wave of violence

Braubach- In the past week police forces have clashed with looters and rioters in the wake of the devastating Braubach Island Tsunami which has now killed a confirmed 36 people and injured over 150. But the situation reached boiling point yesterday when the Braubach Chapter of the growing Luminikan National Functionalist Movement, began violently protesting in the flooded streets. Police reportedly arrested two men for surpassing a Civil defense barrier, but this led to further violent clashes as more protesters and supporters arrived. After fire bottles were hurled, police forces used force against the Functionalists, which led to a bloody fight on the flooded street. Eventually police were forced to flee behind the established barrier. By this time at least three men were confirmed with moderate injuries, one of them an enforcer. By 2:30 PM the entire of Palmstrasse had been overrun with National functionalist rioters.

With police forces fleeing to the North of the city, looting and rioting became widespread and overstretched police resources. 3 banks were robbed, over 150 houses were looted, state buildings were attacked by the far-right renegades, and PMC forces cooperated with the criminals, seizing a large yacht that had been essentially beached. By 4:30, the entire island had fallen into chaos, especially after a small storm hit the north of the island and an aftershock wave about 9 meters high when first sighted struck again at a slum village near Golden Beach. The small island of almost one million inhabitants being very dense, caused the rapid spread of disgruntlement. Even through the night battle continued and up to five died after the police attempted a forceful put down of the chaos. But they changed little as the rage of crime continued through the island. The Government has made some comments on the matter.

Earlier today when the clusterfuck died down, the Police and emergency services attempted to try and rebuild from 20 hours of madness. The Prime Minister Jorge Prinz said today: "The island of Braubach is in chaos. I respect our brave police, fighting filthy criminals: but National functionalists are simply a radical take on our great Republic. We urge the international community to lend a hand because Braubach is falling apart. Long live Luminika, Hail!". The statement was released in Altenstad. Joachim Korze has backed the appeal for foreign aid. Meanwhile, National functionalists continue to control Braubach Island; some police but mainly security officers have turned to support the movement, and concerns of a post-disaster rebellion are rife. President Korze will met with the National Functionalist leaders in Ruinas dos Santos tommorrow to discuss Braubach and the interests of the government and the functionalists.

The entire administrative and creative boards of the Etrurian Broadcasting Agency (ARE) have been sacked by the Federal Ministry of Culture and National Identity. The move comes after weeks of rumour and debate within the government over the future of the ARE, which has long been decried as a “bastion of self-loathing leftism” by the Tribune Movement.

ARE's entire director-level has been sacked and is to be replaced in coming days.

The FMCNI announced the sackings earlier today at an impromptu press conference in which the spokesman said, “following extensive discussions within government and with the senior officials of the ARE, we have decided to take the formal action of removing all sitting directors of the ARE at the administration and creative levels. Replacements will be made in a swift manner as soon as possible to ensure a continuation of ARE’s service.

“The ARE for decades has failed to service the Etrurian people, failure in offering them quality of service, production and value for money. The current administration, which has been in place since 2011 has consistently failed to confront ARE’s financial leaks and being political-appointments, failed to address the political and analytical bias present in its news service and political talk-shows” the spokesman said further.

“Despite the Federal Ministry’s best efforts over the past few weeks to negotiate a solution to these problems, the administrators openly refused to reform ARE’s structure and further refused to address the entrenched political bias, brought forward by the organisation being stacked with allies and friends of the now disgraced president, Emiliano Reali. It is this obstinate refusal by those who constitute the Power-Mafia, that led the Federal Ministry to make this difficult decision” he said, “in coming weeks we hope that our new appointees will bring about the necessary changes to make ARE a suitable national broadcaster” he concluded.

The FMCNI has further defended its position by releasing polls showing significant portions of the ARE’s consumer base considering it biased. A poll produced by Demos last week, ordered by the Ministry, showed up to 55% of respondents found ARE to be “slightly to mildly biased,” while 22% found it be “deeply biased.”

Following the announcement, Federal Minister for Culture and National Identity, Matteo di Rossi told the Senatorial Committee for Cultural Affairs, “our decision is partly rooted in the fact that virtually all of those who sit on the administrative and creative boards are appointees of [Emiliano] Reali, these people are his former colleagues, friends and family friends and classmates from university, this is not an appropriate environment for ARE.”

“These appointees then in gratitude to Reali, offered him and the Federalist Party a gross level of veneration and lee-way, there was hardly any accountability and hardly any investigative journalism ARE was formerly praised for, they went on without any criticism and they still continues today. These people maintained a cult around the near dead Federalist Party, alongside their incompetent handling of finances and decline in product quality” he explained further.

The FMCNI has already appointed former ARE director, Davide Quaglia as acting Director-General, while several names have already been expressed by the Ministry. One prominent name is Alessandro Gaeta, the former head of La Sentinella, the television outlet for the Etrurian Defence Force.

Quaglia is expected to begin immediate work on fixing ARE’s finances which for the past four years has been in the red, while the annual Broadcast Fee, a charge all households must pay when possessing a television, has increased from ₣35 a year to ₣66 a year as of 2017. The FMCNI has openly expressed on numerous occasions that it seeks to see ARE reduce the Fee to ₣20 a year by 2020.

Federal Minister di Rossi also told the Committee that “further reform and alteration will be made to the news service once replaces at the senior levels are complete. It is hoped that the new leaders will ensure neutral and appropriate coverage of events, while the creative side will focus on celebrating Etruria rather than continuing with the pro-EC and anti-Etrurian dramas and documentaries that have been common for many years.”

The move has been denounced by Democratic Alternative and the Citizens’ Alliance, with the CA criticising the move as a “politically motivated purge.”

More as the story develops.

Election Portal

2018-09-20 09:30 PST
With just a few months to go until the election, we're opening up the Election Portal. For those who haven't seen it before, it's a sort of hub where we will provide regular updates on everything election-related, from polling to editorials to press releases. This page, being a portal, will have some articles in its own right on it, but will also link to relevant longforms.

Updates

There is breaking news that over a terabyte of information has been leaked from the Radikal campaign; the latest polls put them as the top party, and so depending on the severity of the leak this may put a severe dint in their lead. The Journalism Association of Pelangi and the Kylaris Union of Broadcasting have got a hold of the documents, and are looking through them. The response from Radikal is already that the documents are illegitimate, and part of a smear campaign; we may not have any news on the topic if this turns out to be true, which is not unlikely. There have been some isolated incidents of Radikal politicans being prosecuted for graft over the last few months.

2018-09-20 14:44 PST
Parti Protesta (PP) has officially released its manifesto, which can be found here. It is much better looking visually than previous years, in the reporter's humble opinion. It is structured according to the triple bottom line, or as they have sold it in some languages, the Three Pillars.

In the Environment section, one notable element is detail on their goal of running Pelangi on entirely renewable energy by 2030, such as specific projects to increase baseload generation; the tide power project for Kedua Bay could potentially raise the ire of local environmentalists and the seafood industry. There is also confirmation of the intent to expand national parks, including marine ones, and to expand recycling programmes.

The Economic section elaborates on the universal basic income scheme and the implementation favoured by the PP. This is the proposal that will be costed by the Legislative Assembly Information Service. A lot of policies, but another notable one is the education funding policy, which proposes to make some tertiary courses free-of-charge.

Finally, the Social section clarifies some of the most distinctive policies of the PP, such as plans to take the government out of marriage entirely, and to recognise various queer identities. Internet access as a human right, one of the earliest policies still held by PP, is also present. Furthermore, it is also proposed that an electorate for overseas Pelangi be set up; how this would be done within the constraints of the constitution is unclear, though unlike many more radical PP policies, this could have support in the Assembly.

Analysis

2018-09-19 23:01 PST
Business as usual
Radikal's rise in the polls recently has alarmed many both to its left and right, and other events in Pelangi politics have induced many to say that this election is a clarion call for the Pelangi establishment.

They would be wrong.

As of writing, three polls put Radikal above PDP in the popular vote, and in each case only by a few points. In fact, Radikal's lead in the most recent poll is only 1%. Pundits also forget that Radikal is presently part of the Pelangi government, in coalition with PDP; they have not frequently been in government in the past. No, PDP is hale and hearty; its middle class homeland is alive and well, and with its successes it is only natural that its coalition partner rises in stature as well. The economy grew nearly 1% just last quarter; unemployment is at the lowest point in a decade; there have been no major shifts in measures like business confidence. While PDP has not acted on some issues important to many such as population, it otherwise retains the administrative pedigree with which it has been in government for twenty years now. I hate to disappoint speculators more excitable than me, but look at the decline of Kesatutanah, in both fame and infamy. This will not be an election of populism, but one based on a highly successful track record, and on principles. If anything, the broad church doctrine of PDP needs to be enforced more effectively, to crack down on those who would pull it away from pragmatic, centrist government.

Interior Minister Tullio Quagliariello has hinted that the government may repeal the Fitzgerald Law. Speaking on ARE News, he said, “it is likely that in coming days or weeks, we may take the appropriate action of repealing the Fitzgerald Law, which has hindered free speech, freedom of expression and distorted Etrurian history for decades.” His comments have sparked controversy among minority groups.

The Federal Minister made his comments while on the Morning Brief talkshow.

Federal Minister of Internal Affairs, Tullio Quagliariello has become the latest in a long list of Tribune Movement politicians to hint that the government may repeal the Fitzgerald Law. His comments on ARE News’ Morning Brief show, have also sparked controversy, primarily over claims the law has hindered free speech and freedom and expression. However, the Fitzgerald Law has long been subject to criticism and condemnation, not just by those on right of politics.

When asked by the host, Anton Stepanovic, what the government intended to do in coming months, Minister Quagliariello said, “many things, of course, at this time we are still dealing with Operation Gladio, which requires significant work to ensure that the billions we have seized is spent on the Etrurian people”, he went on to say, “we also seek to improve maternity leave rights for women workers, work toward improving the gender pay gap and continuing reforms set out two years go to aid our industrial base” he said.

“But also, it is likely that in coming days or weeks, we may take the appropriate action of repealing the Fitzgerald Law, which has hindered free speech, freedom of expression and distorted Etrurian history for decades” he continued. Mr. Stepanovic then asked if parts of the Law would be repealed, to which Mr. Quagliariello replied, “most likely the entire law will be repealed. It’s been a embarrassment to our country since 1946, this is a law produced by a foreigner who led the occupation of our country following the Solarian War. It is only right that we continue our work of ending our national humiliation at the hands of the northern Eucleans” he said further.

His comments follow that of numerous other Tribunes. Last month, Representative Matteo Fiumciano told Tribune Movement supporters, “we’re going to repeal Fitzgerald and purge our country his influence. The law is a reminder of our defeat and humiliation in 1946.” Vice President Vittoria Vasari also expressed a desire to see the law repealed. Speaking to the Tribune Movement conference last year she said, “we must repeal Fitzgerald, for the good of Etruria. We need to end its terrible effects on free speech and the freedom of expression.”

The Fitzgerald Law, though officially known as the “Law against Political Extremism” was produced in 1946 by Seán Fitzgerald, the Glyt diplomat who was selected by the Community of Nations to head the Mandate for Etruria. The Mandate for Etruria was the occupational authority that was formed following the surrender of Etruria in wake of the Solarian War. The law was specifically devised to prohibit veneration of the Etrurian Revolutionary Republic, the two “Leaders”, Ettore Caviglia and Aldo Tassanari, while it also sought to ban symbology and rhetoric related to the ERR period.

Following the restoration of democracy in 1983, successive liberal and globalist governments amended the law to extend its remit and often introduced draconian measures to undermine criticism of the Mandate and the “Second Republic” (1947-1960). Many during that period blamed the law for restricting the growth of right-wing patriotic parties, who suffered fines and embarrassment, as the liberal governments accused them regularly of violating the law when condemning secularism, immigration and the embrace of “war crime” claims.

In 2009, the Urbano Onoforio government rejected a petition signed by 850,000 people calling for the law to be repealed. In a speech to the Chamber of Representatives, President Onoforio said, “the law is the only real thing saving us from a racist thuggish wave.”

The Interior Minister’s comments have caused controversy as numerous minority groups have condemned any move toward repealing the law.

The United Association for Coians in Etruria (UACE) has condemned the comments. In a statement posted on their website, it said, “we wholeheartedly condemn any move toward the repealing of the Fitzgerald Law. It is a vital piece of legislation that protects all minorities and peoples from the evils of the far-right, who with this law repealed, would be free to say anything and act in a way that would endanger our freedoms and safety.”

The Etrurian Conference of Epismalist Citizens has warned that the repealing of the Fitzgerald Law will return Etruria to its national-functionalist past. In a statement posted on its social media pages it said, “the repealing of the Fitzgerald Law will see the Solarian Saluting thugs from the Football Stadiums use that oppressive and insultingly frightening salute in the street. When we were greeted with that salute, it was swiftly followed by a gun. If this law is repealed, it will be 1940 for all us again.”

However, the criticism has been met with denunciation by several Tribunes and others. M26N leader, Gianfranco Galizia tweeted, “those screaming at the repealing of Fitzgerald are scared of losing their impunity in the law.” While senior Tribune, State Councillor Adriano Aldini also tweeted, “the people being hysterical over Fitzgerald are also the same people who invaded our country without resistance because of Fitzgerald.”

Despite the Interior Minister’s comments, so far, there’s been no official confirmation that the government intends to repeal the law in the immediate future.

UNITED REPUBLIC OF LUMINIKA "OBSOLETE", SAYS GROWING MOVEMENT AND POLLS
Image
Newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister Juan Peralta in a Die Netzwerk interview.

Altenstad- After a wave of nationwide protests and radicalization, the political landscape is surfacing with an anti-VRL view. The United Republic of Luminika was established in 1995 at the conclusion of the civil war, but became the modern dictatorial government after a bloodless coup in 2004 by Joachim Korze's Unity Party. But now, many members of the more democratized one-party government are advocating against the current regime, with the support of a strong citizen base. Die Netzwerk polled people from Pointe Nord to Golden Beach and we concluded that 73% of the population is really against the VRL 2004 Government. In the Diet recently, an opposition has been led by Deputy Prime Minister Juan Peralta, who's growing faction has sparked a wave of radicalism in the Diet. In the civilian landscape, several recent protests for moves towards various new governments; functionalist, democratic, and others. A united front, mainly centrists and center-right, have been reportedly pushing for a freer republic.

Examples of growing civilian distaste in the regime include the national functionalist protests on Braubach which have spread to the other islands. A group of leading National functionalists met with President Korze in Ruinas dos Santos yesterday, concluding that the local government of Braubach would become a more autonomous functionalist institute. Authoritarianism will be imposed to manage the post-tsunami landscape. Politically, only left-leaning elements of the Unity Party were opposed to this. Mr Peralta said that he supported the move, but said that a national functionalist Luminika would ultimately bring about international problems. On the hot topic of Iles Des Saints reclamation, he says "Gaullica lost her other colonies, she cannot keep our islands."
The Diet is supporting Peralta's recent activities.

Looking to the future, if the State Diet proposed a democracy referendum, our information suggests a successful "Yes" vote would pass. However the current regime may crack down on "Peraltism" in the state. Even if no steps towards a governmental change occur it is likely the Diet will pass the unconfirmed Multi-Party Bill if it does indeed exist and is bought to the legislature. If that happened we'd expect Pernalta and a large chunk of the Unity Party to form their own political movement advocating for a "Pernaltist" republic. President Korze has said "the United Republic of Luminika will march on", and nothing more. Prime Minister Jorge Prinz has denounced Pernalta and stated he will not order a referendum of such context. Pernaltism is now a media boom, with the label being applied to more and more things everyday. The political future of Luminika is now very unclear.

GAULLICAN CONSERVATIVES TO FORM MINORITY GOVERNMENT
Hugo-Noël Devereaux's Conservatives are to lead a minority government alongside allies in the National Front and Old Guard Party, following intense cross-party talks.

Verlois, Gaullica -

It has been formed. What for the better part of a month has been referred to under different monikers; "The Coalition of the Right Wing", "The Right Wing Coalition" and more favourably and commonly; "The Coalition of Tradition" has been formed. Following a month of arduous negotiations on both sides of the political spectrum and numerous falling outs between the parties, it was those of the right of the traditionally used left-right dichotomy that have pooled their resources and similarities together to form a minority government.

The minority government falls 11 seats shorts of control of the senate, hitting three-hundred and five seats out of a needed three-hundred and sixteen.

Despite this, it was viewed by political pundits as the 'likeliest of outcomes' due to matters ranging from the pendulum swing of politics to the inner fighting and fracturing between the Social Democrats and the Catholic Labour Union.

Both other frequently mentioned options; 'The Last Resort' and the 'Grand Coalition' both failed to make any ground. The latter was deemed 'unacceptable' by both major parties, with members of the SDs and the GCs declaring their parties were too ideologically incompatible to undergo a coalition. The GCs, in particular, highlighted the imbalance of seats and the notion that this was a last attempt for the Social Democrats to remain in power as the largest party.

It, however, did come as a shock to many when Devereaux and his colleagues, Boulanger of the FN -- and in theory -- Jean-Claude Montecardé of the OGP announced that they had hammered out an agreement to bring about their vision.

Devereaux has confirmed that the Traditional Coalition will be proposing a referendum on the monarchy, though its feasibility to get through the Senate is currently under question.

In addition, he has confirmed that the Traditional Coalition will aim to limit the powers that Euclean President Alexis Walker has over the nation. Boulanger has highlighted that "it is time that the Community understands that we are the Community's heart; and if that does not get through we must continue to make it heard through more obstructive methods. Others have leeched off of the nation of Gaullica for far too long."

Devereaux's own governmental plans highlight a reduction in the civil service and a decrease in the government's control of 'essential services', proposing a plan to privatise elements of the water, electric, nuclear and rail industries: in addition to lower the taxation rate for businesses and workers in line with more free market policies.

A large cornerstone of his party has also mentioned that it must "protect the cornerstone of the clergy in the foundations of the Gaullican civil service and state."

However, opposition to the coalition has been prevalent since it was announced as an idea. Students across the country are protesting the fact they feel a functionalist party has not only been present in the legislature since the war's end, but now they have been permitted into governance.

"Don't let Duclerque return!" and "There is no function for functionalists!" have become common chants amongst the protesting students: it is also believed their leaders were inspired by the 'heroism' and 'activism' of their Etrurian counterparts.

KOEAARA ESTABLISHES COMMITTEE ON LAND REFORM

Image
Koeaara announced the formation of the committee earlier today.
Envoort, Nimear - In his first move as State President of Nimear, Mozes Koeaara has established the Committee on the Reform and Redistribution of Arable and Agricultural Land. Land reform was one of his hallmark policies during the campaign.

The committee is tasked with drafting a new and comprehensive bill on land reform, to be voted on in the States General.

Members of the committee range from politicians, economists, farmers, scientists and some common citizens. Koeaara himself has a seat on this committee, and it is expected that the new bill will mirror his earlier, private member's bill.

Many expect the committee to come to the same conclusion as the earlier bill, as well; that land reform is the only viable option. Such a conclusion draws on a study from the University of Sint-Nicolaas which highlighted racial disparities in land ownership earlier this year. Compounded with the recent "Cane Crisis" - a sharp decline in total output from sugarcane plantations - it gives Koeaara's supporters good reason to suggest comprehensive land reform.

Agriculture remains a key source of income for over half of Nimearians. Most are employed as "free hands" on plantations owned by absentee farmers. Koeaara and his allies argue that this has led to a situation where this minority of farm owners neglect a large amount of their lands, and that land reform would alleviate this, in addition to giving Nimearians a more stable life.

Some agricultural scientists suggest that the issue is far more deeply-rooted, however. One anonymous source tells us that "Nimear has long been hit by agricultural blight" and that "the root cause is poor farming practices".

Koeaara has also promised widespread training programs for recipients of land grants.

BREAKING: ASTERIAN EMBASSY ATTACKED
Unknown gunmen in Aquinas exchange fire with Marines; use car to ram gate, throw Molotov cocktails

Aquinas, Marirana -

A car ramming into the main gate of the Asterian Embassy to Aquinas early Monday morning developed into a brief engagement between Federal Marines assigned to the embassy and an unknown insurgent force, which seemed to be attacking primarily from the south, though had also engaged from north and west of the embassy. The embassy reportedly sent a distress message to the Citadel at 10:21am WST, reporting that a sedan plowed into the main gate and numerous armed men threw Molotov cocktails and took shots at embassy personnel. According to the Citadel, they've maintained continued communications with the embassy.

At 10:39am, the embassy reported that hostile gunmen had retreated, and sounded the all-clear. One Marine was wounded during the gunfight, but he was the only individual from the embassy to be injured. At least 4 insurgent gunmen were killed by Federal Marines, according to reports.

The State House made an official statement at 1:10am, saying that "President Avery is currently communicating with President Occhetto in order to find those who were responsible for this attack, and will update the public as progress is made.”

Secretary Randolf also said that "the steps being taken by embassy staff at this moment are, for security reasons, classified. The staff, however, remains unharmed and is, indeed, safe. Lance Corporal Ryan Jurkovski suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the thigh, and is expected to recover.

According to Federal Government fiscal reports from 2017, the Federation Embassy to Aquinas had 25 Marines stationed as security forces. The Federation spent nearly $25 million building the current embassy in Aquinas in 2013, as the insurgency began picking up once again. The new embassy, which consists of four buildings within a twenty-acre compound, was specifically designed to allow Marines to defend the location against attacks— especially of this nature.

More information as it develops.

Federation Embassy in Marirana Attacked
President Swen Holds Press Conference

President Marques Swen announced this morning in a routine Press Conference that he is sending an emergency delegation to meet with President Avery and other Federation leaders in Jackson. While he refused to release the reason behind the visit, it is obvious that it is in reference to the bombing and assault of the Federation embassy in Marirana. The delegation is expected to discuss “regional issues”, as well as a Duquesne purchase of new Federation military equipment. President Swen briefly addressed the incident in Aquinas, saying, “We are monitoring the situation in Aquinas, and we are praying for all Federation civilians and troops currently being affected by the attack.”

President Swen also announced that the Duquesne government is looking to improve relations with the Mariranan government. “In recent months, tensions have escalated with our neighbors to the south”, President Swen said. “The fact remains, they are our allies in the JDF, so we have an obligation to good relations with each other. Because of this, I am pleased to invite President Occhetto to Marquette so we can work on improving relations, as well as boosting our trade and economic activity.”

Tensions began escalating with Marirana when President Swen sent 20,000 troops to the border wall with Marirana in order to crack down on illegal immigration, as well as to combat the drug trade and gang violence. Then, a group of 5 illegal immigrants from Marirana killed 15 policemen in Grande Marecage, in what became known as the Grande Marecage Massacre. Then, the Ospletto Incident took place in Marirana, where the Federation troops, in battling Mariranan insurgents, were required to take cover in a school, which unintentionally led to the deaths of dozens of Mariranan children. The event drew international condemnation of the Federation troops, but Duquesne was the most outspoken supporter of the bravery of the Federation troops. By the end of the seemingly week long media storm, combined with Presidential statements, the riots in Marquette, and the backlash from countries across the Asterias, the Duquesne-Mariranan relations were left tarnished. President Swen hopes to fix these relations, and it is expected that he will offer to send Duquesne special forces to assist Federation troops in combating the insurgency.

The Gubernatorial Elections within each of the 15 Provinces will take place tomorrow. This election is expected to be a referendum on the recent announcement made by Arthur Macron and the Marques Swen Presidential Campaign. The main election strongholds for the Christian Democratic Party: Terre Moyenne, Envale, Passerelle de Sud, and Tuscinaw, are expected to elect Pro-Swen Governors, who will in turn, nominate a National Assemblyman to re-elect Marques Swen. In addition, the Agrarian-Majority provinces of Vallee Verte and Pays Compache are expected to elect Pro-Swen Governors to make sure that Arthur Macron is able to form the Coalition government promised by last week’s announcement. The remaining six Agrarian Party controlled provinces; Vallee De Ste. Marc, Nouvel Cuvimont. Vallee de Cuivre, Grande Marecage, Alpena, and Sud Centralia, are expected to vote along party lines, which will put pro Muria governors in office, that will in turn, nominate Pro-Muria National Assemblymen in order to remove the Christian Democratic Party from power, and make the administration solely controlled by the Agrarian Party. This will put the two major frontrunners at a dead tie, leaving the remaining 3 provinces, Charbonne, Vallee Catacosse, and Hauteseaux, the deciding factors in the Presidential Election. Charbonne and Vallee Catacosse are currently held by a majority in the Working Familie’s Front, and Hauteseaux is majority controlled by the conservative party. The Working Familie’s Front usually allies itself with the Christian Democratic Party, when moving to pass legislation in the National Assembly, and the Conservative Party usually allies itself with the Agrarian Party when moving to pass legislation in the Natioinal Assembly. By these simple terms, we can make our first prediction that Marques Swen and Arthur Macron will win the election by a margin of 8-7 votes in the Duquesne National Assembly.

This upcoming Gubernatorial elections are going to lead to the messiest election process since the election of Jacques Dufour, a Distributist, following the assassination of President Lawrence C. Perrier, which led to the Duquesne Civil War. While it is virtually impossible that the country will fall into another civil war as a result of the election, many people in the Agrarian Controlled Provinces feel abandoned, and will feel even more abandoned, by Arthur Macron’s decision to enter Marques Swen’s Presidential Campaign, thus forming a coalition government, and thus destroying the possibility of a Agrarian Controlled Duquesne. The Political movement surrounding Arthur Macron’s Agrarian Campaign was captivating Agrarian provinces, and many in until recently controlled Christian Democratic Provinces. He had the easy path to Election; having 8 different provinces to provide him with an electoral vote. But, he chose to join the campaign with Marques Swen, and as he put it himself, “To form a government to represent all Duquesnians”.

The point is clear: Marques Swen dodged a hailstorm of artillery fire so incredibly easy. He was going to lose the Presidency to an Agrarian Candidate, and a national Political Movement that would begin moving back towards Isolation policies. All of the work that he and Vice President d’Este had accomplished (Joining the JDF, forming alliances with Valentir etc) would all be slowly eradicated within Duquesne policy. Yet, his work in forming the Duquesne-Federation trade agreement, combined with a metric ton of luck, saved his chances for re-election. Given that the trade agreement would provide tens of thousands of Duquesnians with new jobs, and that it would give a great boost to the economy, particularly the mining and farming industry (The Agrarian Movement’s Stomping Ground), it gave reason for Arthur Macron to join the Swen Campaign to continue the economic benefits for the people that his movement represented. While it certainly tarnished his political reputation among the Agrarian Party Magistrates, it showed the people of Duquesne that Arthur Macron cares about the people, not his own power.

"End the Reign!", But Whose?

Image
Artistic concepts of the new palace released by the Palace
Gatôn, Satucin -

It has been common for scholars of world history to point out one trend that has influenced much of the modern political landscape: the abolition of monarchies. From explosive affairs such as the collapse of the Berseri Empire and the rise of Negara, to the softer deposition of the monarchs of Estmere and Buckland, it seemed evident that this trend was solid. Yet out of one of the most controversial abolitions, that of the Gaullican monarchy, the Montecardé dynasty, after the Great War has come a new controversy.

The restoration of the Montecardés has often been described as 'expected' and 'an end to 80 years of constitutional chaos' by some academics and political analysts, though outside of Satucin it likely came as a shock, and in some places certainly an unwelcome one. Republicans around the world now had to grapple with the idea of a people consciously deciding to end a republic in favour of a monarchy. For many academics the question has moved on from 'how could a country reinstate a monarchy?' to 'who's next?'

In all unlikeliness it appears that Gaullica is prepared to answer that question. With the Conservatives to lead a minority coalition government alongside allies in the National Front and Old Guard Party, fears were raised that they might address a question that had been largely in the background until Satucin's 2017 Referendum. They have since confirmed that the Traditional Coalition, as it is known, will be proposing a referendum on the monarchy, it is not certain as of yet whether it will be passed through the Gaullican Senate.

Already the news has spread anxiety throughout regions of the world. The restoration of the Montecardés to the throne of Satucin was met with little international enthusiasm, but the restoration of the Montecardés to throne of Gaullica is a prospect some countries deem threatening, and others unacceptable. Though the horrors of the Great War ended 80 years ago, for some the memories passed down from prior generations remain fresh. For these the restoration of a monarchy which not only failed to prevent the Functionalist regime who began the war but openly aided them is sickening and a threat to the peace so many died for.

This, however, is not the universal opinion. Monarchists in Satucin chose not to dwell on the past in their campaign, prioritising the advertisement of the extensive junior branch of the Montecardé dynasty, one which they knew would appeal to a wider audience, one which was free of the 'taint' of functionalism and most importantly one which was born and bred in Satucin.

For Monarchists in Gaullica ignoring the past is not an option, choosing to begin their history in 1935, the birth of the republic, would be a mistake that would quickly tank their campaign. History will prove to be a tough opponent that the republicans will use against them, though some have suggested using the memory of Albert III, the centenarian Emperor turned President of Gaullica, as the spearhead of the movement.

Gaullican Correspondent Sébastien Lièvremont - Opinion

The restoration of the Montecardés is considered extremely unlikely, but recent events should tell us that what political analysts expect or don't is often irrelevant. Analysts in Satucin were often very split, viewing the restoration as hypothetically realistic but practically with little chance of happening, especially as decades came and went without a referendum promise ever being upheld. In Gaullica analysts view it as hypothetically unrealistic, and practically impossible.

It is in times of great turbulence that the peoples of countries often make the boldest choices, and I believe Gaullicans are set to do just that. While on the surface Gaullica is enjoying prosperity as one of the most influential countries in Euclea and in the world, things are a little different on the ground. Worries over employment, national health, price inflation and wage stagnation all tend to boil into feelings of abandonment by an establishment now firmly tied to the Euclean Community. And what better way to strike back at said establishment than something which would introduce a new party into the political arena, a guardian of the constitution not bound by electoral whims nor political circumstances.

The Gaullican Senate would be making a grave error in shooting down this proposed referendum,. The question has been stewing at the back of every Gaullican's mind since 1935 and the imposition of a republic on Gaullica by the Grand Alliance. The people deserve to be heard, the question deserves to be answered.

But while the people of Gaullica are possibly about to given a chance to answer a question 80 years in the making, what do the people of Satucin think? We polled over two thousand and gathered their responses.

Image

It seems that most people in Satucin don't believe that Gaullica will end up restoring the former monarchy, with only 16% believing it to be a likely outcome. A large minority however were unsure, perhaps seeing even the idea of a referendum in Gaullica on the issue as something indicative of changing moods.

Image

In terms of happiness we largely see this trend reversed, that while most think it's an unlikely outcome it is one that would be happy with. A minority of 12% see it as neither a good nor bad thing, with 8% being unhappy at the prospects, and again a large minority being unsure as to their feelings on the matter.

Image

Something many Satucines likely haven't given thought to is, who is to reign if Gaullica does end up restoring the monarchy? Most believe the answer is obvious: Jean-Claude. Yet there is the possibility that Gaullican campaigners might pressure him to give up his right in favour of a younger candidate, and there have been rumours that his Majesty Théodore I is a strong possibility. Yet it seems that this is something the Satucine public would not fully support, with 41% being against the idea, and only 28% supporting it with 31% remaining undecided.

Though it is unlikely his Majesty will become the ruler of another country, it has been announced that he will become the proud owner and resident of a new palace. The Palace have confirmed that a new palace is to be constructed in Anniane to become the main and official residence of the Imperial Family, and is largely to be based upon the Palace of the Golden Fountains of Rayenne, which was destroyed during the Great War.

We put up an online poll asking for your thoughts on what the name will be, based upon a list of our most likely, and here were your answers:

UPDATE: AQUINAS EMBASSY ATTACK
Secretary Russo's address, what we know about the attack, and what's still in question

The State House, Jackson, the Federation-

Monday morning, the Federation's embassy to Marirana was rocked when a currently-unidentified group of insurgents rammed a sedan into the embassy's main gate. Following the crash, a flood of gunmen swarmed around the embassy, forcing Marines into a twenty-minute firefight that ultimately ended when the attackers retreated.

In the two days since the incident, the Defense and State Departments have opened a joint investigation to identify the culprits of the attack. While both departments stated that the investigation is still "ongoing", they've released a number of updates to the public, including more-accurate casualty numbers and a better description of events. Secretary of State Aaron Russo appeared in the State House alongside the president this morning to update the public on this investigation, and to tell them what exactly the State and Defense departments have uncovered.

Secretary Russo announced that six attackers were killed by Federal Marines, with four wounded and taken into custody-- one of which has since died, raising the hostile death toll to seven. The remaining three prisoners "are - and will remain - in Asterian custody" said Russo, who added "are currently in no condition to be interrogated." Russo confirmed that Lance Corporal Ryan Jurkovski received a gunshot wound to the thigh, but said that the Marine's injuries are neither life threatening nor permanently debilitating. He would add, "this young Marine did what most Asterians would never: took a bullet for his country. Lance Corporal Jurkovski is recovering nicely, and if I recall, he was able to speak with the president earlier this evening."

In addition to the updated casualty report, Secretary Russo was able to better-inform the public of the events that occurred Monday morning. According to his statements, the Federation Embassy to Aquinas raised an alert to notify the Citadel and State House of a possible crisis at 10:21am WST Monday. A four-door sedan had rammed head-on into the compound's main gate at a speed of approx. 50mph, and minutes later, Marines at the gates were under fire from an unknown insurgent group, which threw Molotov cocktails over the gate. The attack was focused from the south, though Russo confirmed that the embassy was also under fire from gunmen and snipers in buildings to the east and west.

Still, however, the Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) - which has taken charge of the investigation - told the public that the prisoners have been identified, but did not specify on what was found. The FIS did, however, say that they still have not uncovered the greater organization responsible. Deputy Director Martin Orvelle suggested that it could be a "brand-new fringe militant movement pulled together by the anger and frustration felt from the Ospeletto Incident. It's a fire of anger, but while it burns bright, it burns very quickly."

Government announces major changes to maternity leave laws
Etrurian mothers to receive five-months paid leave, free-childcare for those in vocational training and other new benefits

The government has announced a wide-ranging reform to maternity leave laws. President Carcaterra announced the changes to the Chamber of Representatives where he described it as the “biggest shakeup of maternity leave and women’s employment rights for decades.” The new reforms include the expansion of time offered for mothers from three months to five, the offer of ₣540 per-month in childcare support for those who give up the new “voluntary period” among other new provisions.

President Francesco Carcaterra made the announcement.

After months of work and deliberation, the Tribune Movement government has announced its changes to maternity leave laws. It constitutes a major part of the government’s so-called “women’s revolution”, aimed at promoting childrearing but also women in the workplace. The government had promised reforms during this year’s election and have honoured that promise with what’s being described by the Etrurian Mother’s League as the “most expansive and welcomed change to women’s employment rights for almost a century.”

Addressing the Chamber this morning, President Carcaterra described the new changes. Vice President Vittoria Vasari was expected to give the reading, owing to her role as Sub-Minister for Gender Equality, however she is reportedly dealing with a personal matter.

Welcoming the chance to describe the changes, President Carcaterra said, “while I suspect it would be better for Vice President Vasari to detail our changes to women’s employment rights, it is humbling and a true honour to have this opportunity to detail to the Chamber, our radical reformation and expansion of rights, for our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters.”

“The main focus of change is the time granted to expecting mothers. In wake of our extensive discussions and work with the Etrurian Mother’s League, National Committee for Women’s Equality and the National Union of Midwives, we are now providing mothers five months of paid leave, two months prior to the birth and three months post-birth. The option for a month’s deferment pre-birth can be secured through a doctor’s notice of permission, the deferred month may then be taken post-birth.

“During this period, mothers will receive 80% of their pay during the first two-months pre-birth and the first-month of post-birth, before this falls to 60% for the final two months. Companies maybe permitted to cover the 20% difference, however, both base rates of 80% and 60% are mandatory. Any company or employer who shirks this duty or responsibility, will be punished” he said further.

“Alongside these changes, we will be introducing the voluntary-maternity period, which may extend from the formal period for a further year, however, this will be unpaid and companies will require 15 days prior notice, should it be taken. If taken, the Federal government will provide a monthly payment of ₣540, to assist in childcare costs, this will be increased to ₣840 should the mother bare twins. During the voluntary period, mothers will be protected in their jobs by law. No mother again, will raise their child and have no job or career to return to, if they choose to do so” he explained.

What do the new changes mean for you?

“Other changes include the provision of free-childcare with state-run institutions for mothers attending night-school, vocational courses or securing university degrees. By providing free-childcare, we are guaranteeing the women of Etruria the opportunities for advancement and new and brighter careers” President Carcaterra said.

The changes will be presented to the Senate through a series of small bills, which are all expected to pass by the end of the month. The final bill will set all changes to come to force on January 1st 2019.

“We promised to be the party of all Etrurians, to ensure that our great country offered opportunities to all Etrurians, men and women, old and young. Our commitment to Etrurian mothers is our commitment to Etrurian motherhood and the family. No woman should be forced to decide between family and career, when the government can provide the means for both. We serve the Etrurian family, so that the Etrurian family can grow, develop and give back to Etruria through patriotism, contentment, happiness and hard work” he said to loud applause.

The improvement of women’s employment rights and maternity leave has been a key pillar of the Tribune Movement government since 2016. Much of its position is dictated by its aim to guarantee Etruria’s national population reaches 70 million by 2030, primarily to maintain the majority being below the age of 38. Last year, President Carcaterra warned of aging populations saying, “we must be wary of the aged curse afflicting the EC and other states, once society ages, traditions and morals decay, there’s no commitment to family and the slow decay of the economy and politics begins.”

Though the changes are expected to pass, segments of the opposition and the Tribune Movement itself may oppose the changes. Members of the Citizens’ Alliance have called the changes “detrimental to business”, while others in the TM have argued for a return to “traditional motherhood at home.”

The president’s office confirmed that the vote will not be open and TM senators in both chambers will be expected to toe the party-line.

The changes have been widely embraced by Etrurian women across the country. Social media has been flooded with supportive statements, including by some fierce critics of the TM government.

Prominent liberal author and activist, Giorgia Raggi posted on her social media page, “who would have thought the neo-func government would introduce the most progressive women’s employment rights for generations. #Conflicted.”

Etruria’s leading women’s rights campaigner, Augustina Fatti wrote, “this is the biggest improvement to women’s rights in a century and this is by the government that wants to take the vote away from Marolevs and thinks climate change is an EC plot. While they may paint these changes as a vital tool to aid the ‘Etrurian family’ and other anarchic arguments, I welcome it and find myself in awe of Carcaterra’s bravery. I also find the CA’s opposition to this sickening, how dare they deny women their rights because of business’ bottom lines.”

The CA has also nefariously sought to undermine the success story by claiming the TM will use these changes as cover to “ban abortion, ban contraception and ban family planning.”

Government taken to Court of Cassation over land redistribution

Image
Pro-government farmers protesting outside an agribusiness-owned farm in Tarauacá district.
Concordia, Moreira- A fresh confrontation has emerged between the government and several large land-owning agribusinesses in northern Moreira, as the latter continue to fight the government’s land reform agenda. Caixas Food and Fernandes Terra have taken their case against land distribution to the Court of Cassation, where they hope to secure their property by claiming the government’s plans infringe their constitutional right to private property.

This morning, the Court of Cassation reported that it had received notices from Caixas Food and Fernandes Terra that they would co-jointly seek constitutional protection of their land from government plans to redistribute it local farmers. Both companies had previously sought to do so through civil courts but were defeated by the government. The Court of Cassation is their final option and if defeated, will set precedent that will permit the government to proceed without further hinderance.

Minister of Justice Fransesc García Rovira has warned “by taking this issue further, these companies are swiftly heading toward a destination where they will find themselves at the losing end of the court-ruling and with that, I doubt we will offer our compensation package” he told reporters.

The government’s chief legal representative, Anna Maria Falcão also told reporters, “this decision by two businesses is deeply regrettable, the government has a straight system in place to provide compensation to companies who have land returned to their workers, these two have rejected the system and now seek a costly case with the highest court, we are confident in our chances of a positive ruling, it is the two companies who face losing out.”

In 2013, the late president Jair Passos de Albargaria presented plans for land redistribution to local cooperatives run by farmers, with compensation awarded at value per acre. As of 2010, 86% of ariable land in Moreira was owned by agribusinesses and landlords, many of the latter have little to no involvement in farming and instead, rent out plots to local farmers. The former president sought to see the percentage of corporate-owned land reduced to 65% by 2020.

Last year, President Lucia Cordeiro announced that the plans would be brought into action and between September 2017 to May 2018, 15% of corporate-owned land had been successfully distributed to local farmers, many of whom established cooperatives with government grants. In August, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced it would seek to establish working and contracted ties between agribusinesses and cooperatives as a means of unifying agricultural production in Moreira.

The process has also been marred by acts of violence and vandalism. Last week, several farms owned by Conceição Foods were set ablaze by employees after it refused to vacate land in Amanã district. Conceição Foods accused the ruling United People’s Socialist Party of orchestrating the acts, this was denounced by the government as “salacious lies perpetrated by a irresponsible corporate landlord.” Despite a police investigation, no arrests were made, which further infuriated the company’s executives.

The case brought forward by Caixas Food and Fernandes Terra will be heard tomorrow by the Court of Cassation, following which the government will present its own case in support of the land-redistribution plan.

President Cordeiro was asked about the case during a session of the Popular Assembly, to which she replied, “this process is designed to fairly redistribute land from a tiny corporate few to the many landless workers of this country, that break their backs, soak their brows and sow the fields. We hoped that by offering responsible and appropriate compensation, this process will be swift and fair to both sides, but now we’re seeing the resistance of the corporate world, which makes clear its opposition to the empowerment of the worker and the people.”

However, there is growing concern within the government that the Court of Cassation will rule in favour of the agribusinesses. Senior UPSP politician, Antonio Andrada Paiva warned the Popular Assembly, “the justices on the Court of Cassation are not of the socialist cause, they don’t want to empower the people and bring justice to the masses, they serve their capitalist and Asterian-backed masters, if the court rules against the people, then we should press on regardless.”

Mr. Paiva is now reportedly working with other UPSP lawmakers to produce legislation that will grant the government the power to confiscate land earmarked for redistribution without compensation in the event of the Court ruling against the government. This has been met with vicious condemnation from the opposition and several major corporate bodies, who warn that would lead to capital flight.

The president’s office has not commented on whether it would support Mr. Paiva’s legislation. We could not secure comment from the UPSP headquarters nor Mr. Paiva’s office.

Vice President Siqueira claims Aquinas attack was a false-flag

Image
Vice President Siqueira made the comments while visiting a
mine in northern Moreira.

Vice President Claudio Siqueira has accused Asteria and Duquesne of a false-flag attack on the Federation’s embassy in Aquinas. Speaking to miners in Diadema, he said, “the attack on the embassy in Aquinas screams of nefarious plots and agendas, they [Asteria] launched it themselves to prolong their occupation of Marirana.”

“No surprise that the functionalists in Duquesne back the Federation in this barbaric charade, both governments seek to undermine the people’s revolution across both Asterias, by attacking their own embassy, Asteria will now see to prolong their occupation and brutal violation of our comrades in Marirana. Slaughtering innocents in Opoletto was just the beginning, now they up the ante by faking attacks on embassies.

“Why would the cartels do this? What do they gain? Only further aggression and attack, but they do this at the further expense of their own countrymen. Asteria did this to themselves and already the racists in Duquesne have vowed to deploy more child-killer soldiers to Marirana” he said to loud jeers and boos.

Seven armed gunmen were “shot dead” by Asterian Marines tasked with defending the embassy complex in the Mariranian capital, one is in their custody and is now being illegally held by the Asterians. They launched their attack after driving a car through the main gate, before engaging in a twenty-five minute gunfight with embassy guards.

Vice President Siqueira said further, “it is suspicious no? That not one Asterian died? The theatrics works better if no one on their side is harmed, this would undermine their plan and what Asterian agent would truly want to kill one of their own countrymen? And the one who is now in their prison? It’s understandable that they would not want one of their own to be handed over to the Mariranian authorities.”

The Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying, “the Popular Republic of Moreira is deeply concerned by continued violence within Marirana and the attack on the embassy is deeply regrettable as it is disturbing. But more importantly, it is vital that the response by the Federation not be overzealous or disproportionate.”

More as the story develops.
