Grande Marecage
Government and Law Enforcement officials briefed the media on updates regarding the investigation into the senseless attack on law enforcement this past week. The 4 attackers are members of a Mariranan gang. This gang is notoriously violent, and they often stop at nothing to protect their drug trade. The deceased attacker, identified as Jose Ramirez, had previously been imprisoned in the small jail held at the station, and he had particular grief with several of the officers stationed there. The other three attackers, all of whom have been released from the hospital and remain in high-security police custody, are identified as Marcos Pacheco, Jesus Flores, and Mariano Ruiz. While they were never in custody in the specifically targeted station, they all had experience with colleagues being arrested, mistreated (in their poor opinion), and ultimately brought to the station. During interrogations, they revealed that they were to follow the strict lead of Ramirez, who was considered the leader of the operation. Going in to the attack, Ruiz was tasked with obtaining the firearms, which he successfully accomplished by robbing several hunting cabins with other gang members who he continues to refuse to identify. Pacheco was tasked with finding and driving a vehicle to and from the station. Given his previous experience as a getaway driver, he would ideally be able to evade police with his driving skill and knowledge of the area. Lastly, Flores was tasked with monitoring his stolen police scanner, to be able to predict and prepare for the police offensives during the operation. Police Chief Jacques Gallagher commented, “Local police precinct like this are extremely threatened on a daily business due to the close proximity to the border, as well as the high magnitude to the Duquesne border. We truly need help on the federal level in order to combat these problems plaguing not only the safety of our officers, but the overall well-being of society”.

Chief Gallagher also referenced the fear in the precinct among officers that could potentially be targets. “We are working closely with neighboring departments to potentially relocate certain officers for their and their families’ safety. This attack reminds the public of the incredible danger that the police departments face on a daily business.”

Governor Mary Barquett (CD) also spoke at the press conference, talking about the provincial government’s commitment to the local departments. “The government of Grand Marecage is committed to the public’s safety, as well as the safety of our brave Police and Emergency Services. Instead of being rewarded for their tireless work for the removal of drugs and drug traffickers in society, there are 15 brave officers who had their lives stolen while fighting to protect their families, and the people of Duquesne. This attack is yet another example of the dis-service that Mariranan immigration does to our country. Instead of denouncing our country, I call on the JDF to seriously look at the problems and threats facing our people before they publically and globally insult our efforts to protect our people.”

General Mark Madson, Chief of the Duquesne National Border Patrol also pledged further work into the drug trafficking issue. “Before the recent action taken by President Swen to increase the size of the Border Patrol’s presence on the Mariranan border, the Border Patrol was forced to rely, and sometimes depend, on the local police precincts to handle the drug trafficking rings along our border. The Duquesne Border Patrol is committed to working hand-in-hand with local departments in order to keep deadly drugs off our streets, and to keep terrorists like these 4 men the hell out of our country.”
Following the Press Conference, the Governor's office announced the deployment of 3,000 National Guard troops to the Mariranan border to assist the Border Patrol, as well as the overworked local precincts. This is still an ongoing investigation, so stick to the SRG for updates regarding the National Tragedy.

WALTON'S TAKES STOCK HIT; BILLIONS LOST
After getting slammed with a devastating racial discrimination lawsuit, Walton's Super Stores Inc. has lost a staggering $21 billion in stock value

Trinity Plaza, New Haven -
In the heart of the Downtown New Haven, made up of only a cluster of blocks, lies the heart of not only Asterian, but global finances. Trinity Square, a portion of city where the New Haven Stock Exchange is located, along with dozens of firms for stock brokers and investors. Ask any businessman whose been to the Exchange and he'll tell you that, in simple terms, the Exchange is chaos. Stock market values for all companies involved in the market rise and fall by the minute and shareholders buy and sell shares based on a wide variety of factors.

On Wednesday, Trinity Plaza was not just busy, but rocked to the core as Walton's Inc. suffered the single largest loss in its history: a staggering $21 billion in market value. Walton's, a massive chain of superstores that spans through the country and internationally - which also serves as Asteria's largest employer - has spent the last year suffering from brutal stagnation that eventually led to the gradual drop in market value as the company became submerged in controversy surrounding racial discrimination in dozens of their Dinejo stores. Dozens of victims filed a class-action lawsuit against the sales giant last November, citing dozens of cases of hazing, shorting of pay, false write-ups, and verbal abuse. The company came under even more pressure when it was revealed that even management was guilty of these behaviors.

As Walton's was forced to shell out millions in settlements to victims of their employees' treatment, it was also forced to fire hundreds of employees across Dinejo-- leaving the state's Walton's stores grossly undermanned and severely hurting sales, as some stores have been forced to close certain days of the week as there are more employees, and all others have worked too many hours. As Walton's has poured money into damage control, the company has missed its projected market growth for this quarter, causing its investors to scramble.

In just a matter of hours on Wednesday, August 8th, the rapid sell-offs of Walton's shares caused the company's market value to drop by $21 billion-- the largest single loss in its history. Walton's CEO Eric Brandt told Sentinel News: "Walton's is a company that has shown before that it is quite resilient-- we have faced far worse in the past, and always overcome it. As a company and as a team, we've taken a pretty nasty black eye, but we will absolutely see the market stabilize within the next few days, and the value of Walton's shares begin to recover."

Gerry T. Benfield, former-economic adviser to President Ronald White, told reporters hat "this sort of thing tends to happen with large corporations like Walton's. It's easy for market value to explode, and shareholder confidence to climb with such a massive company. But when something that big looks like its about to tip over, a lot of people are gonna start bailing to save their own hides. Mass-panic, shareholders sell off rather than lose millions in shares, and the company's value plummets."

Vredlandia Catches "Invictus-Fever" After Surprising Victory

Eldburg, Vredlandia - TV ratings for the Invictus Games have risen noticably after the Vredlandian basketball team managed to score victory and Vredlandia's first gold medal 2018. Commentators and average citizens alike believe that the time for another Invictus bid has finally come. Reportedly, Seneschal Treuwegen himself has taken a liking to the idea.

Vredlandia is enthusiastic after its boys won a gold medal in basketball at the Invictus Games. It's the first such success in basketball, one nobody really saw coming. Although basketball has become one of the standard teachings in Vredlandian P.E. classes, the President of the Vredlandian Basketball Association still sees significant deficits. "Many teachers treat basketball as inferior, because they weren't trained in it when they were younger", he believes. It's a sentiment he also feels much of the media and establishment have, and one of the reasons basketball is underfunded and rarely recognized. "We may not have had much money, but the right mentality. Maybe now, with our victory, money will start to flow as well."

Maybe one indicator of better times are the TV ratings, which rose sharply as it became clear that Vredlandia might win its first gold medal in basketball. Ratings also increased sharply, from a market share of 28.6 % for the ceremony - a share so frigheningly low, TV executives were starting to worry - to 41.4 % in the basketball finals. Ratings remained high afterwards.

Jon Heyderlein, bar owner in Eldburg, confirmed the newfound enthusiasm. "People are flowing in only to watch Invictus with friends and colleagues. It's extraordinary, almost like a football World Cup, and definitely not something we had last time. Asked about what the reaction to the basketball victory was, Heyderlein laughs. "It was great, just great. We have such a cool, humble team. Everyone was really happy for them. One girl so much so, she accidently let go of her beer when she started cheering. The bottle almost hit me in the head, but most definitely made a mess behind the counter. But it's all fun, we had a great laugh."

One of those trying to use the newfound enthusiasm to their advantage is Seneschal Treuwegen. Him and Kloth see this as a chance to have an overarching narrative for the next election: "We'll bring the Invictus Games to Vredlandia". With that, they're jumping on a bandwaggon of enthusiasts in the media and business who are loudly calling for Vredlandia to launch an own bid to host the Invictus Games, but them and the Unity Party can also make these calls with the most credibility. They're the establishment that has hosted so many great things, they have the ties and money. Raivo Kloth, accordingly, is already bringing the Unity Party in line, and with success: Franz Klee, mayor of Eldburg, is very sympathetic towards the idea. The mayors of Vredensund and Ragnvald reportedly want to hold local referendums first, but are also in agreement. And then there are the Ministers of Health and Law, for who such an event is a tremendous opportunity to advertize themselves. It could boost their career - if they win the election first.

And so this is more than a national wave of sympathy for the Invictus Games. It sets the stage for another fight during the elections. But that - and so everyone agrees - is a matter for another time. For now, Vredlandians want to enjoy Invictus. And whether it's at Heyderlein's bar, the National Assembly or basketball courts around the country, Vredlandians most certainly do.

Of course, Treuwegen would make this about himself. We enjoy the games, but no, we don't actually want them.

NINETEEN ASTERIANS KILLED IN BLOODY MARIRANA FIREFIGHT
A surprise statement from the Citadel reported one of the largest engagements between Asterian and insurgent forces in Marirana; 19 Asterians and dozens of insurgents killed in the fighting.

Ospeletto, Marirana -
This morning, the Citadel called for an impromptu press conference, where Secretary of Defense Trevor McNamara himself addressed members of the press to inform them that nineteen Asterian troops had been killed during a large-scale engagement in Ospeletto that occurred on Wednesday and Thursday this week. According to the Secretary, "a platoon of Army Rangers had infiltrated a dark zone in the southeastern portion of the city", going on to describe a "dark zone" as a "portion or district within the city still under the near-total authority of the Cartel. Asterian and JDF forces can rarely operate in these parts of the city because of the sheer risk of attack." He stated that the Rangers found themselves in an ambush and under attack by a numerically-superior force, and retreated to the nearest defensible position, which they soon discovered to be a school that was, at the time, in session.

Throughout Wednesday afternoon, the press was told, the Army Rangers resisted the overwhelming cartel attack. Not only were there Sicarios - cartel soldiers - but the cartel had also amassed a large force of local fighters. Pinned deep inside enemy territory, Secretary McNamara told the press that "I called for the President as soon as I was made aware of the situation. When he got to the Situation Room, General Fitzgerald and I briefed him on the situation, and he immediately took charge." The Secretary said that President Avery made the decision to send a nearby company of Marines to punch through to the Rangers and evacuate them, and was also responsible for clearing the first airstrike in an urban area since the 2017 tragedy killed dozens in a smaller Mariranan city. It was not told what the airstrike's target was, nor the results.

"Marines met fierce resistance as they advanced down the stretch of road they call the 'Devil's Corridor'" said McNamara, "which was the quickest route to the trapped Army Rangers." Marines were met with an ambush "at least every one-hundred yards" said CPL Thomas Engleman, who was interviewed by Sentinel News War Correspondents. It wasn't until the next morning, Thursday, that the Marines reached the school that the Rangers had fallen back to. The wounded and dead were evacuated along with the survivors, and Secretary McNamara said that "the remaining Rangers and Marines were able to make it back to friendly territory safely."

However, not everyone made it back. The Citadel reported that 11 Rangers and 8 Marines were killed, with an additional 8 Rangers and 12 Marines wounded. The Citadel estimates that at least 500 cartel sicarios and local fighters were killed - most in the overnight standoff with the Rangers - though most estimates put the number between 7-800. This number is staggering, as the conflict in all has seen an overall decline in hostility, and most operations have turned drug enforcement-style ops. The Federation has not seen an engagement of the size and lethality of this week's in more than a year, and it could very well sound to the Asterian people that the Federation's intervention is not going as well as the Citadel says it is.

Likewise, the staggering losses suffered by the Ospeletto Cartel could very well be the massive dent in their organization needed for the JDF to gain the absolute advantage-- nothing is certain until the Citadel decides it is the appropriate time.

Vice President Siqueira accuses Asteria of committing a war crime in Ospoletto

Image
Vice President Cláudio Roberto Siqueira made his comments during a meeting of the UCILW.
Concordia, Moreira- Vice President Cláudio Roberto Siqueira has condemned the Federation of Asteria for the “barbaric, criminal and outright sickening use of Mariranian children as human shields.” The incident in Ospoletto in Marirana has shocked both Asterias, which according to Federation sources, may have left as many as 900 dead. The Foreign Ministry has called the Federation’s ambassador to explain the incident, while members of the Popular Assembly have called on President Cordeiro’s administration to recall Moreira’s ambassador from Jackson.

The incident in Ospoletto according to Federation sources began when a patrol of Army Rangers was ambushed by armed fighters of locals and Sicarios from the dominant cartel in the region yesterday. Under heavy attack, the Asterian soldiers took up defensive positions inside a school whilst in session. Asterian Marines were then deployed to evacuate the trap marines, however, a total of 19 Asterian soldiers were killed in the incident.

Asterian defence officials, who are known to exaggerate casualties of hostile forces, ludicrously claimed that between 800 to 900 Mariranians were killed. The Asterians also confirmed the first use of an airstrike on a urban target for years, another indicator of its complete disregard of local civilians. The Citadel made no comment on how many school children were killed as a result of their use of their place of learning as a defensive position.

Speaking to the General Session of the United Coalition of Industrial and Land Workers this morning, Vice President Siqueira condemned the incident as a “utter stain upon humanity, a further decline of the Federation into the dark depths of racism, expansionism and barbarism.”

“How dare they use innocent children as human shields, this is the behaviour of terrorists and monsters, this is a war crime, through and through, Asteria, in all its might and glory has committed a gross and bloody war crime against Marirana, to all Asterians and all humanity” he said further to jeers and boos from delegates of the UCILW.

“We, the workers and farmers of Moreira stand with our comrades in Marirana in wake of this barbarism. We stand with them against the imperialist and racist agenda of the Federation and we will be there, shoulder to shoulder when the occupation of northern Marirana comes to an end” he told delegates.

The Foreign Ministry tweeted that it had recalled the Asterian ambassador to Moreira to explain the situation.

It also confirmed that President Lúcia Machado Cordeiro spoke to Marirana’s President Lorenzo Ochetto to offer Moreira’s “emotional, revolutionary and diplomatic support.” Both presidents reportedly agreed that action should be taken.

The Morerian Popular Assembly is amassing signatures for a bill calling on the administration to recall the country’s ambassador to Jackson.

Member Oriol Remeu (PSPU) wrote the bill, he told Tempo Globais, “we cannot in good conscience offer complete solidarity with Marirana and continue to chink glasses with the State Department. We need to take a stand in complete solidarity and withdrew our ambassador from the Federation.”

Although the Popular Assembly would need a two-thirds majority to make the bill binding, many members believe that the bill in itself is enough to inform the President of the country’s anger at the Federation’s latest assault on southern Asteria Superior.

“We hope that the bill, no matter how many signatures or votes we get, will signal to President Cordeiro, the peoples’ wish to see Moreira stand up and make its point. This decrepit Asterian Order needs to come crashing down, we need to assert the independence and freedom of all nations in the two-continents” Mr. Remeu said.

More as the story develops.

INVICTUS PRIMA
The Celestial Isles attends its first Invictus Games

SPAGLEANN, GLYTTER- Today marked a historic event, when the Celestial Isles participated in its first Invictus Games ever. The insular empire lacked the proper infrastructure and commitment to the outside world in times past to participate, and only in the past few decades has been opening up once more. This season, a proper interest was shown in Yocatullic participation-and the people of The Isles are eager to prove themselves on the competitive field.

The move came to both criticism and delight from many locals. More conservative factions are particularly confused in the matter- for on one hand they favor athletic competition as an ancient display of the warrior spirit, and wish to give such a show to the whole of the world. On the other hand, many loathe the unwanted outside influence that participation in the Invictus Games might bring to the homeland, and do not wish their warriors to show their skills and cultural arts to outsiders in what they argue is a cheap display for attention devoid of proper meaning and spiritual significance. More liberal factions in Yocatullic society, however, experience sheer delight from the idea. They state that any chance to display Yocatullic culture abroad is one that should be taken, that the glorious rewards for any potential victory outweigh the consequences of an honorable defeat, and that the scale of the games allow Yocatullic participants to give a true display of their ancient martial arts and upkeep these sacred traditions.

The Celestial Empress was very pleased with the coming of the latest Invictus season. At a time when more Yocatullic people, both abroad and domestically, have access to international media, she said that she figured it was about time to inject indigenous Sublustrian contestants into the contest, warriors of the ancient ways, masters of the martial arts, to compete with foreigners from all around the world- and for better or for worse to bring recognition and note to the small island confederation. Even the other chieftains were proud to send their warriors! We talked to La Aoleieulaula Neru, the reigning chief of Tai Pe'a, to hear his opinion.

"It is a very exciting time," said Aoleieulaula, "In these days where we can send warriors to distant lands, and people from all over the world will get to see their skill. I remember a time in my youth when such a thing was unimaginable, when competing warriors even from different islands was a special occasion- and the extent of Sublustria was essentially the entire world. I remember an age where Euclea was an abstraction, some far-off land we knew of but had no real way to verify. They were beyond our world, our people, so far across the sea that they were like aliens to us. It would be like someone saying they're from Lino- it's just something you can barely comprehend, you hear but you don't really understand, like it has no meaning."

"Now," he says, "We can go anywhere in just a matter of hours, at most a day. Internet connects many as well. It's an amazing thing to think about, and how now our outlying islands can experience the rest of the world from a chair in Makuahine. I think it is important we acknowledge the new world we live in, and moreover make ourselves known to this world. These fine young athletes should experience this sort of long travel, to know where their diaspora brethren live, to see what the rest of the world has- and to know, comparatively, how the Celestial Isles is. How they differ from us, and how strong our traditions are compared to theirs. How ancient our ways. And how our ancient ways are still relevant in the world today."

Yocatullic athletes are optimistic about their playing. One, Munata, or "red snake", told us this: "It's exciting to be here. I am proud to represent my tribe and my people to the world. Even if we don't get any medals, that we came to be here today, for the remainder of the Games even, it is a remarkable experience. It's not about winning, it's about being here, with the best of the world, playing to represent the Celestial Isles abroad. I feel greatly honored by just having the chance. I would like us to win at least one, though."

Ever since the predecessors of the modern Invictus Games were first played across Artis, they've been an inspiration for friendly competition without borders. An Artiot javelineer, Leonidas Manakis, responded on his Yocatullic counterparts- "I think that it's great another team is participating. It's been a long time since these were just the Pan-Artiot Games, and the essential message of competition without borders reaches a new height with Yocatullic participation. Their javelin team is honestly kinda scary!" he laughed.

It seems both the Islanders and those from the international community are eager to see how this plays out. Meanwhile, thousands have rented space in Makuahine to watch the Games, coming from villages with no access to such media. Will the cheering fans at home propel their team to a victory? Only time will tell.

MAIERA MOVES IN TO SUPPORT GOVERNMENT ON BRINK OF COLLAPSE
After further Huriya attacks, Maiera promises monetary support and a personal militia to the government.

TIRONA, TIRONA -

In a shocking move, the oil magnate Safiya Maiera made an announcement that she would openly be supporting the government against the forces of Huriya, both through monetary support and military support through a private militia.

The announcement comes after a series of attacks against the government forces defending the coastline of Tirona by Huriya forces on Friday. These attacks were devestating, hitting at weak spots against the government lines. Because the government forces were already spread thin, they were not able to respond as effectively. As forces from one area arrived to support against an attack, Huriya would launch another attack the spots where the forces just came from. By the end of the day, the attacks had been repulsed, only following confusion, frustration, and losses.

What was most concerning to the military officials is when they released a report to the government, saying that Huriya seemed to know their every move and plans, and seemed to be more coordinated and planned than just an normal insurgency. Many had already guessed this, however, when the report became public, public opinion further began to deteriorate.

The government's position seeming even more desperate before this, it was soon thrown into full panic. The ruling Conservative Party, a big tent collection of conservative parties, has shown signs of fracturing and infighting; faith in Prime Minister Julia Celeste's government is lower than ever before, with many delegates, both opposition and coalition, calling for her and President Hussan's resignation. The government is in panic mode, as the leadership is desperately trying to find a political, military and economic solution. It appeared certain to many that the government was on its last legs, ready to crumble at the next sign of crisis.

That was until Safiya Maiera became involved in a situation.

Safiya Maiera is considered one of the wealthiest and most powerful, as well as one of the most interesting, figures in all of Tirona. Aged 42, she was born the only daughter of the Oil Magnate Amman Mairera, the owner of Tirona Oil, Tirona's largest oil company. Growing up around businesspeople, she quickly learned the art of the deal, and became shrewd at economics. She married the Buckland politican Alwin Adwan (who himself was of Tironan descent), and would become the first lady of Buckland from 2006 to 2016. This exposed her to the world of politics. In 2015, she take over her father's company at age 39 after his death. She proved a savvy businesswoman, inserting herself well into the complex world of the oil trade and high money economics. She quickly became one of the most prominent figures in Tironan society, especially in her advocacy for corporate rights, and is one of the most powerful and influential figures in all of Tirona.

Maiera made a public announcement that she would be supporting the government in the war openly. During the announcement, Maiera said that "At this critical time, I will do what needs to be done to help to protect Tirona and her people, even at my own personal expense." In addition to the monetary expense, she announced that she would be supporting of a personal militia she had formed. The militia is reported to be well funded and supplied, and includes both foreign mercenaries and Tironans. It goes by the name "Talab", or Order.

The government reaction was a mix of wariness and relief. As soon as the announcement was made, the situation began to stabilize, as the support of one of Tirona's most powerful individuals is a powerful boon. However, there is also weariness as well, as many in the government expressed concern about her interfering in the situation, and as to what her true motives are. However, in the end parliament voted to accept the aid offered, with the view that avoiding government collapse would be best in the end.

However, the move proved to be popular with the people, especially those who live in the cities, as the involvement of arguably the most powerful single figure in Tirona to support the fight against Huriya was widely appreciated. It is hoped by many that her involvement will be the turning point and finally put Huriya on the defensive.

STATE PRESIDENT-ELECT KOEAARA DENOUNCES FED ACTIONS IN OSPOLETTO

Image
The State President-elect made his statement to gathered media representatives.
Envoort, Nimear - When news of most recent scandal of the Federation-led intervention in Marirana surfaced, State President-elect Mozes Koeaara convened a press conference to offer his views, two days before his official inaguration, following the propagation of his tweets regarding the matter.

The scandal in question is the revelation that a patrol of Federation Army Rangers serving in the city of Ospletto, Marirana used a school in session as a defensive position during a skirmish armed locals and Sicarios from the region's dominant cartel. This prompted allegations from Moreiran Vice President Cláudio Roberto Siqueira that Asterian soldiers had used Mariranan children as human shields during the fighting.

The Citadel, the Federation's centre of military sources, released a statement which sparked the scandal, claiming that 19 Asterians were killed, while they estimated that at least 500 locals lost their lives.

In the press conference, Koeaara largely reiterated the stance he gave in his earlier tweets. "Trevor McNamara has blood on his hands" he told the press. "How many school children died in this attack? How many more will have to before the Federation gives up its imperialist dreams?" he said.

When asked by a press correspondent if he supported Siqueira's statement that the Federation had committed a war crime, Koeaara was hesitant to commit to an answer. "I cannot speak for the Court of Justice in Ashcombe" he told the correspondent, "and I would be hesitant to jump to allegations of that calibre" he added, "but at present, the evidence seems fairly damning for the Federation."

"I stand by my previous statements" he told the press, when prompted. "The only way for us to combat Asterian imperialism is to resist it as one" he added, "so I would be more than willing - pleased, even - to consider some kind of agreement with like-minded countries, to counter Asterian aggression in the region."

When asked if that meant a 'tripartite pact' with Moreira and Marirana, the State President-elect nodded, but gave no formal response, citing time constraints and a need to get through more questions.

One correspondant asked the State President-elect what his wishes for the Federation were. "Ultimately", Koeaara responded, "I believe the Federation of Asteria should own its crimes" he said, "and apologise for the tumult and turmoil it has helped to foster in its southern neighbour."

Marquette, Duquesne
President Swen held a press conference outside the National Assembly building shortly after the news broke of the deadly confrontation between Asterian Troops and Mariranan Insurgents at a Mariranan school. He praised the bravery of the Asterian Troops, and blasted the leaders of Nimear and Moreria, calling their comments “Ridiculous and Disgraceful”, adding, “The current work of Asterian troops in Marirana is a benefit to people of all Asterias. The violence spread by the insurgents effects our people immensely, last week's attack being an obvious example. The Republic of Duquesne is committed to assisting the Federation in Marirana to keep not only our people safe, but the people throughout the JDF and the Asterias as a whole safe and secure.” While remaining critical of the Federation’s response to our new immigration and border security policies, Swen, as well as representatives and governors from provinces bordering Marirana all made similar comments.

The Duquesne Secretary of State, Mary Gotenie, announced the sending of a Duquesne delegation consisting of military and diplomatic officials to meet with President Avery and other military leaders in the Federation of Asteria. “The President’s commitment to safety for our people, and expediting peace in Marirana, will begin immediately, and hopefully our future assistance efforts in Marirana will expedite peace in the region.”

General Marque Duason of the Duquesne National Army also spoke regarding the state and preparedness of the Duquesne Army to enter into the Mariranan conflict. “We are currently organizing special forces teams to work with the Federation troops in close coordination on the ground in Marirana. We have supplies in place to deploy following immediate direction from President Swen, and regardless of the time that planning might take, our preparedness will not waver.”

In addition to the briefing on the Mariranan incident, President Swen also gave a quick update on the investigation into the Grande Marecage Massacre. “Police Officials have arrested 3 other gang members who were involved with the planning of the operation, as well as assisting the 3 attackers in obtaining weapons and ammunition. All 6 are being held without bail at the Grande Marecage Federal Prison, a maximum security prison reserved for the worst of Grande Marecage’s criminals. These 6 men will be held to the fullest extent of the law, and our federal prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty against the 3 attackers.” Swen and other Law enforcement officials are hoping to uncover most of, if not all of the gang during the investigation into the senseless massacre.

PROTESTS THROUGHOUT MARIRANA AS ANGER GROWS OVER JDF BRUTALITY
Prime Minister states government will make an official statement tomorrow, urges protesters to "maintain your rage"
SHAREImage Image Image Image
Comrade Francisco
13 August 2018

Protesters in the city of Santa Maria.

MARIRANA - Massive protests have broken out across Marirana's largest cities Santa Maria, Aquinas, Monticello and Soriano following reports of Federation soldiers using a local school in Ospletto as a line of defence against members of the Ospletto Cartel, effectively turning children into human shields and resulting in over 500 people dead, including 19 Asterian soldiers.

The massacre of so many people - the worst since the bombing of the St Paolo Secondary School bombing in December last year that saw 112 dead - has ignited long running frustration in Mariranan society over the ineffective anti-crime policies and the role of the Federation.

Many of the protesters are demanding the withdrawal of Asterian troops, who are increasingly seen as putting more Mariranans in danger than they are saving.

"What kind of person would use children as human shields? How are these people protecting us? Alfredo Mazzini, a protester in Soriano said.

"Our politicians, foreigners told us these people were here to save our lives. But they care so little about our lives that they use our children as human shields to protect themselves. That is not helping us; that is putting us in danger".

"I think its time for these people to leave".

The tragedy has been marred by the words of so-called JDF allies such as Duquesne and Platerdam, whose leaders sought to defend the actions of Asterian troops whilst downplaying the senseless massacre of innocent Mariranans. Duquesne president Swen - already unpopular in Marirana for his xenophobic Mariranan-bashing rhetoric by heaping praise on Asterian soldiers as brave despite hiding behind children and failing once to mention the masses of Mariranans who died in the attack. Violotta Giovanni, a protester in Monticello, stated that whilst she "understood the need for Asterian troops to be deployed, I cannot let comments such as that pass. We are the biggest victims here, and what those men did was cowardly - hiding by children is never justifiable, not ever. The fact one of our allies has such scorn for us is why I'm protesting this whole state of affairs."

In contrast statements made by Moreiran Vice President Cláudio Roberto Siqueira (who blasted the Federation for the"barbaric, criminal and outright sickening use of Mariranian children as human shields") and Nimearian president-elect Moe Koeaara (who stated Asterian defence secretary "Trevor McNamara has blood on his hands") have been received positively by Mariranans, with Moreira's proposal to recall Asterian ambassadors prompting President Lúcia Machado Cordeiro to be the most popular foreign leader in Marirana according to opinion polls.

"Moe and Siqueira are right, we should start saying no to Asterian imperialism" protester Roberta Alfano staid. "I hope this will make Occhetto not just start rethinking how we deal with crime but also how to rethink our friends in the world, because they are clearly not Asteria or the JDF".

Minister of Foreign Affairs César Romani stated the government would be speaking to the Asterian ambassador immediately, whilst Defence Minister Alberico Durando stated a rethink in defence policy is underway.

Prime Minister Amadeo Tajani spoke to protesters outside parliament, stating "President Occhetto will address the nation later on this matter...but the government would like to say we are all mourning for the victims. Their loss is an entire country's loss; the loss of so many children needlessly put in harms way and slaughtered for no reason. This should be a call to everyone; no more will we tolerate this. We will let our sorrow be known; and maintain our rage for the coming fight".

PRESIDENT AVERY ADDRESSES NATION; EXPLAINS CIRCUMSTANCES OF BLOODY SHOOTOUT IN OSPELETTO

The State House -
President Avery appeared on Live Television this morning from the State House, hoping to provide information as rumors and speculation engulf the reality of the situation that unfolded in Ospeletto earlier this week. Following the Citadel's public statement of the large-scale engagement that occurred Wednesday and Thursday this week, the Federation was hit with a wave of criticism from primarily-regional adversaries and opponents that denounced Asterian "Imperialism". Nimear's President-elect, Mozes Koeaara, said in regards to children being caught in the crossfire that "Trevor MCNamara has blood on his hands," saying "How many school children died in this attack? How many more will have to before the Federation gives up its imperialist dreams?"

Vice President Siqueira of Moreira accused the Federation of war crimes, and calling on the Federation's ambassador to explain the incident. Moreira proceeded to recall its ambassador. Vice President Siqueira called the incident an “utter stain upon humanity, a further decline of the Federation into the dark depths of racism, expansionism and barbarism.” He went on to accuse Asterian soldiers of using children as human shields: “How dare they use innocent children as human shields, this is the behaviour of terrorists and monsters, this is a war crime, through and through, Asteria, in all its might and glory has committed a gross and bloody war crime against Marirana, to all Asterians and all humanity” He added that “We, the workers and farmers of Moreira stand with our comrades in Marirana in wake of this barbarism. We stand with them against the imperialist and racist agenda of the Federation and we will be there, shoulder to shoulder when the occupation of northern Marirana comes to an end”.

Glytter's Foreign Ministry even had words for the Federation , tweeting this afternoon: "The Glytteronian Government is deeply troubled by the presence of soldiers in a school building during the school day. Civilian populations and children must be left out of armed conflict."

President Avery appeared on Live TV before the Federation, and indeed much of the world, to explain the events that unfolded in Ospeletto.

"Firstly" President Avery began, "the notion that Asterian soldiers would knowingly use civilians - let alone children - as 'human shileds', is not only insulting, but it is a blatant lie. The courage and selflessness displayed by our men and women in uniform daily is beyond comparison, and to so quickly claim that our heroes would do such horrific things just shows how little our adversaries know about us-- something they should be scared about. If Asterian soldiers are cowards, then bravery does not exist." President Avery has never been known for threats, but he made it clear how he felt towards critics of the event.

"The truth of the matter is," Avery continued, "that the Federal Army Rangers had no knowledge that the building was indeed a school. They had come under intense enemy fire and were in an exposed position-- they fell back to the nearest defensible location." He would add that "according to reports from Rangers that were involved, there were no clear markings identifying the building as a school."

"Furthermore, upon establishing a defensive position and seeing children and staff fleeing from the building, the Rangers unanimously told military investigative officials that they held fire, while cartel gunmen continued to engage the building. Any civilians that were killed - any children gunned down in the chaos - were killed by cartel bullets." He would add that "that blood is not on the hands of Secretary McNamara."

President Avery would continue by saying that "the heat of combat is a suffocating heat, and a soldier needs to act quickly and adapt even faster to any situation. To that end, I find it to be quite unsettling that career politicians - men who have never been in the position these young men and women are in - can so quickly judge the decisions they make on the battlefield."

"I can't even say how many reports I've gotten on my desk of young soldiers and Marines risking their own lives to save the very citizens they're are being accused of using as human shields."

"Asterian soldiers are not murderers" Avery pressed, "and to hear others calling us such, while backing the cartels that leach off the people of Marirana like a cancerous growth, shows the Asterian people all they need to know about the character of their leadership." He would then speak on the death toll from the event. "I would like to put to rest the rumor that the civilian death toll reached five-hundred-- this could not be more inaccurate. Estimates gathered from eyewitness statements put the civilian death toll around thirty killed. We currently have no estimate on how many of those killed were children. We can, however, say with certainty that no Asterian pulled the trigger on these civilians nor did they have knowledge that the building they'd taken cover in was a school. Local insurgents were aware that this building was a school that was in session, but chose to continue engaging Asterian forces-- it was their fire that led to such staggering civilian losses."

President Avery would finish by stating "the Federation does not condone the use of civilians as leverage in wartime-- never, under any circumstances. The events that occurred in Ospeletto were tragic, but not deliberate. It was simply the result of chance, and horrible luck. The Asterian people stand with the families of the victims of the tragic occurrence, and we will continue to aid and support the Mariranan people, and assist in freeing them from the cartel's authoritarian leadership".

Overseer Adalbert Hamlin Congratulates Federation

STEINHAFEN, EISENKUSTE - STEINHAFEN, EISENKUSTE -

National Overseer Adalbert Hamlin has broken his silence over the incident in Marirana where a group of Federation troops were ambushed in Marirana by a militants belonging to a drug cartel and were "forced" to retreat into a school, giving his congratulations to the Federation forces involved.

Hamlin gave a public statement to National News reporters eariler today.

"The Federation troops were sadly forced to take refuge in a school due to a untimely ambush because of violent insurgents - or, should I say, criminals in the guise of insurgents. It is shameful for the governments of Moreiran and Nimear to instantly accuse the Federation of war crimes due to their own extreme left-wing bias. What was the alternative for the Federation troops? Sit there in a exposed area and die? Federation troops are bravely risking their lives to protect the Mariranan people from these violent, pseudo-insurgent drug cartels and insurrectionist troops. I do not make these claims lightly - I believe that the Federation military has done many misdeeds in Marirana, but this is not one of them. The claim of using children as human shields is nothing more than sensational agitation. Instead, the Federation is blamed for simply doing what the JDF mission requires of it by stopping forces aligned with the insurrectionists. Who, I was, do you think killed the civilians? The insurrectionists! War is not a kind thing. The Federation men were brave to try and protect those who are innocent from roving gangs of marauders in Marirana. The government of Eisenkuste stands with the JDF and the men and women involved in combating the insurgency infesting Marirana."

The Incident in Marirana has become a media headline, as many nations have moved to condemn the massacre or defend the Federation action. Eisenkuste is involved in the ongoing JDF intervention in the Mariranan Insurgency and has sent 400 troops as part of the JDF Joint Command Marirana, which has drawn troops from many JDF states, such as the Federation of Asteria, Roselle, Dusquense and Eisenkuste to combat insurrectionist militants and drug cartels.

ANTI-FEDERATION PROTESTS ERUPT IN MAJOR CITIES

Image
Ordinary citizens gathered in Sint-Nicolaas to protest Avery's accusations.
Envoort, Nimear - The banded stars - the national flag of the Federation - burnt bright on numerous occassions in the streets of Sint-Nicolaas tonight, as angry citizens took to the streets en masse, in solidarity with their Mariranan siblings and in opposition the the Federation's rampant imperialism. The Nimearian left is back in action.

Protests come after news of the Federation's recent actions in Marirana - in which Federation soldiers used an in-session school as their personal battle ground - and the subsequent attempts by pro-Federation leaders to slander those who speak out for the protection of children and stand up for human rights across the Asterias.

"Avery showed his true colours" one protestor, the young Lisanne, told de Arbeider. "He thinks we're his playground, that our lives are his games." she said. "But they're not; this is our age, now."

Another protestor, who was proudly wearing a Rainbow Coalition pin, told our reporter that he was "worried about [the Overseer of Eisenkuste]'s comments". "I never realised we had a glorified Federation base for a northern neighbour!" he told us.

Such comments refer to Overseer Adalbert Hamlin's public statement, in which to the people of Eisenkuste he defamed Moe Koeaara, twisting his words to fit his own agenda, while then having the audacity to claim that comments from Koeaara and Moreiran Vice President Cláudio Roberto Siqueira were because of "left-wing bias".

If defending children from bullets counts as left-wing bias, most mothers in our nation could be accused.

The whole affair has served only to strengthen Koeaara's proposal for cooperation between the so-called "Red Wave" states of Nimear, Marirana and Moreira, to directly combat Federation imperialism.

"If we want to chart a course for the future for our nation that isn't determined by Jackson, we have to stand together with our comrades in Marirana" one protester, by the name of Wijnanda, told de Arbeider. "Avery is trying to bully them into submission, to kick them while they're down, and we can't allow him to succeed."

Other protests occurred simultaneously in Envoort, Nieuw Zilverzee, Kroesestad, Helmond and other major cities, but the Sint-Nicolaas protests were the largest, and lasted all the way through the night.

"These are the death throes of the Asterian Empire" one foreign policy analyst told us; a poignant thought to end on.

SCHOOL MASSACRE DRAWS INTERNATIONAL CONDEMNATION
Songhua government blasts Asterian imperialists, pledges support to Mariranan people
SHAREImage Image Image Image
Chang Zuolin(@chazo)
13 August 20:30 | Tianjing, Songguo

Tianjing, Songguo -

Deputy Foreign Minister Bing Daiyu launched into a tirade against Asterian imperialism in Marirana and the Asterias today at an impassioned impromptu press conference outside the Foreign Ministry today as she went inside, as shocking news of a burning Mariranan school in Ospeletto and dozens of slaughtered children and civilians beamed around the globe. Deputy Minister Bing pulled no punches, lighting into the Avery administration for its "ludicrous lack of concern" for the "innocent young lives who become the collateral damage in their imperialist designs." She echoed sentiments voiced by senior Nimearan, Moreiran, Glytteronian, and Mariranan leaders, and took President Avery to task for his typically pompous and self-aggrandizing imperialist response to the issue.

"Mr. President, you say this crime was simply chance and bad luck. I say to you- if your country's brutal imperialist campaigns leave children's lives to chance and the caprice of the battlefield, then it is time to halt them. And I ask you- if your soldiers are not murderers, if they are noble and free of blame, then is it not you, and the rest of the leaders responsible for directing them so poorly, who have blood on your hands?"

Having otherwise kept a fairly low profile in her three years in her current office, Deputy Minister Bing seemed to tap into popular anger both in Songguo and the Asterias over the horrific massacre. Other top officials have also been quick to follow Deputy Minister Bing's lead in attacking Asteria's conduct in the Mariranan campaign and the school massacre. First Minister Hao Jinkai blasted Asteria for "exporting pointless, endless, ruinous war" to its southern neighbors, while Grand Secretary Chang Liu affirmed the imperial government's "strong support for the cause of those in Marirana suffering under the Asterian jackboot." Reporters also caught up to Grand Admiral Ting Daiyan, Chairman of the Imperial General Staff, outside the Gate of Divine Might later in the afternoon, and he offered a concise and cutting response to the lies of the imperialist dogs. "If they 'didn't know' it was a school, I think they're a bunch of f*cking idiots," the Grand Admiral gruffly told journalists when asked about President Avery's comments, before heading inside.

Foreign Minister Chao Liu's office released a brief statement later in the afternoon, pledging Songguo's support for Marirana and the Occhetto administration, and saying the government would be considering the introduction of a condemnation at the Community of Nations over "Asterian atrocities" in the brutal multi-year-long Mariranan counterinsurgency campaign conducted by the White and Avery administrations. Internal Security Service and local police forces also maintained a very light presence at several protests outside the Asterian embassy and Asterian consulates across the country, where demonstrators burned Asterian flags and chanted anti-imperialist slogans.

ALLAIRE CONDEMNS FEDERATION ACTIONS

Image
The Prime Minister speaking before the Forum Populaire
Gatôn, Satucin -
Today the Prime Minister condemned the actions of the Federation in the Mariranan city of Ospoletto, saying that they were "reckless, barbaric and propelled by an arrogance we have come to expect". To the agreement of the house he stated that such actions were unacceptable, that they posed a serious threat to Mariranan sovereignty and that the JDF intervention in Marirana was only making the situation worse.

Deputy Auguste Masson, Leader of the Young Satucin party, offered his condolences to those affected and agreed with the Prime Minister. "Now is not a time for party politics, but I would urge the Prime Minister to take every action he can against the Federation and help the people of Marirana in any way possible."

The Prime Minister thanked Masson for his comments and stated that the Government was looking into every available possibility, and hoped that the International Community would be unified in a strong response to the "aggressive" Federation. He praised those nations which had taken a stance against Federation actions, though said that in the face of such a travesty he wondered how the JDF "servants" of the Federation could stomach congratulating them for it.

Deputy Philippe Boissieu of the Democratic Alliance joked that "What the Federation calls infiltration others call blindly walking into a trap" but ended his speech on a serious note in joining the Prime Minister in condemning Federation actions and offering his prayers and best wishes for those wounded or having lost loved ones.

The Prime Minister was asked by Deputy Basile Chuquet of the National Unity Party if he agreed with Vice-President Siqueira of Moreira's comments that the Federation had committed a war crime. The Prime Minister responded by saying that " ... soldiers are deployed knowing they may die in the field, or face danger. Children going to school expect to learn, to grow. How can they do that in a warzone, with soldiers hiding behind them? Is it a war crime? I think the facts speak for themselves."

The Leader of the Opposition, Deputy Gérard Genest, joined the Prime Minister in condemning Federation actions, and asked the Prime Minister of his thoughts on Presidents Avery and Swens, and Overseer Hamlin's responses. The Prime Minister replied that they were "cowardly" and "did not address the root of the problem, that is JDF involvement in Marirana is exacerbating the problem and is not providing any solutions". When asked if he had been in contact with any of the JDF leaders, he said no and said that all he had to say to them was "Resign. Resign. Resign!"

OPINION: WE CANNOT AFFORD TO ALIENATE THE FEDERATION

Image
The current plots against the Federation are plots against the only nation worthy of alliance.
Envoort, Nimear - The loony left think the Federation ought to be our enemy; but know that this is not the right course of action. The Federation remains the only nation on this continent committed to Eastern civilisation.

Against a backdrop of degeneracy of the highest level, the Federation - our northern brother in race and creed - has remained a stalwart bulwark. It has acted as a bastion of reason against the tide of godless socialism which has unfortunately engulfed our continent; and, most recently, our own great white nation.

In short, the Federation remains our only valid ally in this maddening new world order.

We should not hesitate to, in a show of our strength, oppose the leftist-liberal dichotomy that Asterian soldiers are heartless monsters. They have more heart than most, and are our only bulwark against the tides of drug cartels, illegality and hedonism which spew forth from the wretched country of Marirana.

That the so-called leaders of our nation and neighbours would spew manufacture fake news that Asterian soldiers shot children while defending the innocents in Marirana shows only their commitment to the demonisation of our natural ally. The words of the Moreiran Vice President are nothing but hate speech against defenders of the East.

There is a great conspiracy afoot, to uproot the stalwart Asterians from their possession as regional protector, so that the Songhua barons may rise to rule their new world order; and our continent's left are complicit.

We must defend the actions of our moral ally in every circumstance, we must push these left-wing hacks - paid to protest by Songhua agents - off our streets, and reclaim them in the name of Eastern civilisation.

But most of all, we must ensure that the Trojan Horse Koeaara does not infect our great nation with his tyrannical rule. We must organise, and oppose his inauguration so that he may be impeached, and a Nimearian of truer stock may lead our beautiful nation in this time of great need.

Do not listen to the conspiratorial media, friends. Do not listen to the leftist world order. Stand up, fight back, and rally to the defence of white Eastern civilisation in the face of this adversity!

Oedipus Zallandt is Leader of the Authentic Liberal Republican Party, his views are his own and do not represent those of de Heraut.

Marquette
Following the statements made by President Swen yesterday, roughly 16,000 Mariranan immigrants and those of Mariranan heritage descended upon the capital city Marquette early this morning. The protest started peacefully, with the massive crowds marching down Gerard Row, the historic “Main Street” in the city of Marquette. The Marquette City Police was quickly outnumbered and overwhelmed by the crowd size, so the Mayor of Marquette, Jean-Marie Duqueso, was forced to deploy 10,000 National Guardsmen and Riot Police in order to control the crowds. Just before 11am, a small crowd of counter protestors began to interact with the massive crowd of Mariranan nationals. The confrontation quickly became violent, and a violent riot ensued. The restless crowd of Mariranan nationals began attacking counter-protestors with their flagpoles, and also began attacking police and national guardsmen with flagpoles, rocks, bricks, bottles, and anything they could find on the streets. The National Guard quickly began their crowd control tactics along with Marquette City Police Riot Control. The combined force began using tear gas and rubber bullets on the increasingly violent crowd. The crowd became yet even more violent because of the actions of law enforcement, as pure chaos began to ensue in the streets. The protesters also began breaking into shops and other buildings on the road, and attempted to enter several government buildings, where they were met with more rubber bullets and tear gas. The protesters began taking down the Duquesne flags off of the street poles, burning them, and attempting to replace them with Mariranan flags. Protestors have chanted “Death to President Swen”, and “Respect and Justice for our People!”.

At 12:00 PM, the Duquesne National Guard ordered a mass government evacuation, and began moving the Duquesne National Assemblymen, other military and diplomatic officials, as well as President Swen and Vice President Jean Luc B. D’Este. They were swiftly evacuated and transported to a secure government or military location in the country. The Presidential Mansion Chief of Staff Marco Shteperson announced a Presidential Address to the Nation planned for tonight, also calling the protests, “Despicable, Useless, and Divisive”.

Currently, the Marquette City Police have arrested 1,406 people with the assistance of the National Guard. Chief of Police David Schwann has called on the help of neighboring precincts in an Emergency Press Conference, saying, “We request the immediate help of neighboring departments and precincts in both sending officer, and assisting in prisoner transfer. Our city prisons and holding facilities are overwhelmed by this chaotic situation, so I personally call on our neighbors for help for the sake of our officers and public safety as a whole”. A massive yet unconfirmed number of both protestors and officers have been injured, and are overwhelming the city’s 4 hospitals. A plea similar to Chief Schwann’s for outside help has been made by the doctors and administrators of the 4 hospitals for help handling the large number of injured. Shockingly, there are no reported deaths, yet due to the violence, it seems inevitable to the forces on the ground.

While the extremely violent clashes have seemed to have died down in the city squares, numerous shops and other businesses have reported attempted looting, and have requested police assistance. Similarly, large numbers of protestors have attempted to enter key government buildings such as the House of the National Assembly, the Treasury Department Building, and the State Department building, but have been met with considerable resistance by security members.

At the end of his briefing, Chief Schwann also gave his plan going forward in dealing with the protestors. “We expect these protests to continue throughout the day, and potentially during the rest of the week. Our officers are working closely with the National Guard and members of the Duquesne Army to restore peace and order to the City of Marquette. This disgraceful protest against policy protecting our people has turned our capital city into a war zone, and future violent actions against police, soldiers, or other government officials will not be tolerated, and will be met with violent force, if necessary. I would also like to reach out to our JDF neighbors in assisting us in both restoring security, as well as rebuilding from the damage, and working to heal this fractured community.”

President Swen’s address is scheduled for 7:00 PM tonight, and will be broadcasted by both TV and Radio. In addition to the video, we will provide a full transcript once the address is complete.

President Cordeiro condemns President Avery saying "our character of leadership is human decency, respect and kindness"

Image
President Lúcia Machado Cordeiro addressing the Popular Assembly
Concordia, Moreira- President Lúcia Machado Cordeiro has condemned President Benjamin Avery’s comments in a televised address about the Ospoletto Incident. Addressing the Popular Assembly after it voted 252-105 to recall Moreira’s ambassador from Jackson, she said, “President Avery had the gall to criticise us who condemned the use of innocent children as human shields. Well I say that the character of our leadership is human decency, not trying to deflect the massacre of innocent civilians.”

Following hours of collecting signatures for his members proposal, Member Oriol Remeu (PSPU) gained enough support to table it. As expected the proposal to recall the country’s ambassador from Asteria passed with full support of the United People’s Socialist Party and the members from the Socialist Fatherland and Social Party, what was surprising was President Cordeiro’s backing and signing of the proposal.

As a result, at 1am this morning, Ambassador Artur Puig returned to Concordia from his posting in Jackson. This is the first time in modern Morerian history that the country has withdrawn its chief diplomat from the Federation. The President’s response has resulted in her becoming the most popular foreign leader in Marirana, while her personal ratings in Moreira have also jumped, from 57% to 66% according to a poll released this morning.

Last night President Avery address Asterians in defence of his country’s armed forces saying, "Firstly" President Avery began, "the notion that Asterian soldiers would knowingly use civilians - let alone children - as 'human shileds', is not only insulting, but it is a blatant lie. The courage and selflessness displayed by our men and women in uniform daily is beyond comparison, and to so quickly claim that our heroes would do such horrific things just shows how little our adversaries know about us-- something they should be scared about. If Asterian soldiers are cowards, then bravery does not exist."

In her address President Cordeiro told the Popular Assembly, “in his first opportunity to come clean and apologise to the people of Marirana, President Avery chose to lie, deflect and blame the local population. He claims that his soldiers who slaughtered civilians are without fear and cowardice but hiding behind children is nothing but cowardice.

“If he expects the international community to believe that there was no indicator that the building was a school, he is mistaken. Throughout this intervention President Avery and his predecessors alike have shown zero care or respect for Mariranians, this episode was not a one-off it was inevitable. This episode is the turning point, let this tragedy and crime be the moment we as a region say no more” she said to loud applause.

“President Avery, rather than apologise to grieving parents, opted to insult those who dared condemn the brutalisation of innocent children. His claim that this country and all others who value human life are backing cartels is insulting and a baseless lie, his claim that this reveals the content of our leadership, misses the mark. What reveals the content of our leadership is the respect of human life and the right that children have to be free of war and racist-led militarist expansionism. Our character of leadership is decency, kindness and respect. Avery’s is deceit, a blood lust and arrogant racism” she said further, receiving a standing ovation from PSPU members.

Anti-Asterian protests have broken out across Marirana and Nimear, with both President Ochetto and State President-elect Koeaara urging their people to vent their anger.

Last night the United Coalition of Industrial and Land Workers, the country’s umbrella body representing trade unions, called on its member blocs to organise protests in “solidarity with our comrades in Marirana.” The governing United People’s Socialist Party, which co-chairs the UCILW backed the call. The PSPU confirmed on twitter that a “solidarity rally” will take place in Independence Square in Concordia and Square of the Apostles in Sao Francisco also.

The Ospoletto Incident began with a platoon of Asterian Army Rangers being ambushed in what the Asterians call the “Dark Zone”, a district under sole control of the local Cartel. Under attack, they took up positions inside a school during lessons and engaged cartel and local fighters, hundreds were killed according to the Asterian military, including 30 children. Asteria has faced global condemnation as a result.

More as the story develops.

President Carcaterra tables the Civil Security Act in the Chamber of Representatives
After weeks of anticipation, the government has tabled its anti-mafia bill.

The Tribune government has formally tabled the Civil Security Bill after weeks of anticipation. The legislation, which is the most expansive bill tabled to counter organised crime in modern Etrurian history. It was presented by President Francesco Carcaterra who told the Chamber of Representatives, “if we are to thrive free of the Corruption, we must do all possible, to purge it from our system and that begins with the passing of this bill.” Despite the vast criticism of the bill from the opposition, the bill is expected to pass the Chamber with the full-support of the Tribune Movement, Farmers and Workers Union and the M26N.

President Carcaterra used his opening statement to threaten a name and shame of those who oppose the bill.

After weeks of anticipation, the bill was formally tabled at midday today by President Francesco Carcaterra. The bill was supposedly ready for tabling two weeks ago, but with government infighting over the President’s decision to reform the judiciary to restore relations with the EC, it was delayed. Despite that, the government has at last produced legislation that it promised in the 2016 and 2018 general elections.

In the opening statement to the Chamber of Representatives, President Carcaterra told lawmakers, “today marks the opening salvoes of the righteous and holy war against organised criminality, the Corruption. Today marks the most moves on the front against the engrained and near-politically protected gangs and mafias, that is today. This bill will pass because it must. This bill will pass in its current form because this Chamber will pass it. Any amendment, any filibuster, any obstruction will be seen by this government and the people of Etruria, as a direct effort to protect the Corruption and its masters. We will be watching and listening, we will know who tries to stop this or water this down and we will tell the people who you are.”

The government is expected to see full support from its members in the Chamber, enough to carry it over the threshold to be passed onto the State Council. However, some within the opposition have raised concerns that the bill will greatly expand the powers of the federal government and may threaten civil liberties of those accused of being involved in organised crime. However, sources in the Chamber have revealed that the President’s threat to name and shame members who attempt to alter the bill’s contents will provoke a public outcry, this appears to be the aim of the government, who wish to deter any tricks by the opposition.

Speaker of the Chamber, Renato Rossi (TM), has given the house three days of debate. If passed straight off by the Chamber it will proceed to the committee stage, where it will be reviewed by the Senatorial Judicial Committee; the joint-house body charged with reviewing “First Line Legislation.” The Tribunes gained a majority on the committee last year following the resignation of two Federalist members, who left politics in wake of a infidelity scandal. Once it passes the Committee stage it will proceed to the State Council, where it will either be voted into law or rejected and returned to the Chamber. The Tribunes however, gained a two-thirds majority in this year’s election, ensuring its passing.

The Civil Security Act will do the following:

  • Formally reclassify organised crime as a national security threat.
  • Designation of Mafia chiefs as “Enemies of the State.”
  • This will enable the Federal government to use the Counter-Terrorism and Homeland Security Act against suspects. Charges under the CTHSA carry the death-sentence following the 2017 capital punishment referendum.
  • Grants the Federal Government the power to seize all properties, assets and financial assets from mafia groups.
  • Including businesses, properties, personal belongings and financial assets.
  • Businesses and organisations linked directly to the group can be seized without exemptions or waivers.
  • Indirect links including financial irregularities and corporate links.
  • All assets seized will be used for the National Rejuvenation Fund, to pay for infrastructure, federal housing and schools. Businesses will be sold to private bidders or nationalised.
  • Civil Security Service will be granted extensive surveillance powers.
  • Suspects can be held for 72 hours without charge.
  • An amnesty can be offered to lower ranking members in exchange for information and evidence.
  • Family members of suspects can be held for 48 hours without charge for information.
  • Annual auditing of public bodies and political parties to detect links to organised crime.
  • Removal of immunity of suspects in both houses of the Senate.
  • Abolition of State Police Services and merge with the Federal Police Service. De-centralisation of command to the states.
  • Establishment of detention facilities separate from the Federal Prison Service, under the purview of the Federal Ministry of Justice for organised criminals.
  • Civil Security Service may block the travel of suspects without possessing passports or ID cards. In conjunction with the Border Protection Service, this will be extended to foreign suspects.
  • Foreign linked groups or individuals will be barred from Etruria for life.
  • Name and Shame list of corporate entities and persons who are linked to organised crime in Etruria.
  • Foreign corporate entities or persons found to be directly linked will be sanctioned by the Financial Standards Authority and the Finance Ministry respectively.

It is believed that President Francesco Carcaterra, Federal Interior Minister Tullio Quagliariello personally wrote the bill. President Carcaterra from his pre-political profession as an academic had developed a deep-seated hatred toward the mafia. In his 2005 book ‘The Necessity of the Nation’, he wrote, “the organised crime elements in our country constitute a deep-state, an alternative and rival authority – which holds sway over two branches of the state and at worse all three, while also possessing a near monopoly of violence. This is a disgraceful impediment to the development of Etruria and in truth a reminder of the state’s vulnerabilities since 1946.”

Speaker Rossi granted the first day of debate entirely the government’s benches, which has caused a scandal itself owing to the ceaseless efforts of the opposition. However, so far it appears the Tribunes will support the bill in totality.

Dragomir Vedic (TM) described the bill as “the bravest bill devised to confront the decades and generations old stain on our country.”

Annamaria Povegliani told the Chamber, “this bill is necessary as it is genius, with this in the law book, we shall possess the necessary powers to destroy organised crime and destroy the greatest impediment to growth and development.”

Tomorrow will see the debate open to the opposition parties, which is expected to be heated and lengthy as the Citizens and Democratic Alternative vowed to confront the bill.

We will be operating a live stream and updates of the debate over the next two days.

SEC. MCNAMARA ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION
Trevor McNamara appeared on television to announce his resignation as Secretary of Defense, this coming less than a week after multiple children were killed in a firefight between Army Rangers and cartel forces.

The Citadel -
Secretary of Defense Trevor McNamara appeared at the Citadel alongside Army Chief of Staff Stephen Fitzpatrick to announce that he'd had a "though much of the events that occurred last week", and that he would be "turning in his resignation by the end of the week." The Federation has received intense criticism following the tragic death of multiple school children who were caught in the middle of a bloody firefight between Army Rangers and local fighters belonging to the Ospeletto Cartel. Multiple countries have slammed the Federation for its handling of the situation, with some even going as far as to accuse it of war crimes. Even the Asterian people are in a rage as 19 young men return home in boxes, with the flags draped over their coffins. It would appear that Secretary McNamara will be taking the heat, and the fall, for the tragic event.

"Losing civilian children in a warzone," McNamara began, "is the worst fear of someone in this kind of position. I have children, and while they're all adults now, I remember when they were infants and toddlers, and I remember driving them to school and picking them up. The thought of a war unfolding where my children go to learn and become better, smarter citizens... that thought is horrifying."

He would continue by saying "the Citadel has, for a number of days now, been meticulously investigating every aspect of that event. We have concluded thus far that the primary error likely came from within military intelligence-- not our Rangers. Had our Rangers known that this building was a school - one that was in-session - it would have never been designated as the nearest defensible position.

"To better-prepare against such a tragic and needless loss of life, the Department of Defense will be completely reorganizing our intelligence personnel currently involved in the Mariranan conflict. This includes firing personnel.

"While we can prepare, and do our utmost so that nothing like this happens again, we can not take back or ignore what happened. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the fact that innocent young children died because of gross negligence within our structure. That cannot be tolerated. Therefore, as Secretary of Defense of the Federation of Asteria, I am accepting responsibility for the horrible deaths of these children, and President Avery may expect my resignation letter on his desk by the end of the week.

"I would like to thank all those who have supported me over the years - my friends and family especially - and would like to end by offering my most heartfelt-sympathies to the families of the victims of this attack."

President Avery has not commented on Secretary McNamara's announcement of resignation, nor has he nominated a replacement. Therefore, as soon as McNamara gives his letter of resignation, the DoD will fall under the leadership of Deputy Secretary Marcus Deluth, who will serve as acting-Secretary of Defense.

The Citadel also announced that at least twenty intelligence officials from multiple branches of the military will receive disciplinary action as a result of the events in Ospeletto. At least five could face dishonorable discharge and possible court-martial for gross negligence, while others could be subject to anything from redeployment to a new duty station to demotion, among many others.

OCCHETTO - REFERENDUM ON JDF MEMBERSHIP TO BE SPONSORED IN RESPONSE TO "NATIONAL TRAGEDY"
President states that the "unforgivable crime" should be "mourned by all" whilst recalling Asterian ambassador

AQUINAS, MARIRANA - In a televised speech to the nation President Occhetto has officially responded to the recent siege of Ospeletto and resultant deaths of several Mariranan and Asterian citizens by calling the attack an "unforgivable crime" and that the death of so many people was a "national tragedy".

"Children lie dead in the streets of Ospeletto thanks to the senseless, violent actions of some and the malicious indifference of others...the use of human shields in any conflict is wrong. Putting children in harms way is wrong. There is no justification for it, not ever, otherwise we lose our morals and are as guilty for their deaths as those who shoot them."

"What has transpired in Ospeletto is not something that can be defended. It is morally reprehensible on all sides - and the fact children, the children of this nation, those who had lives, love, hardships and happiness to look forward were ended simply because they were "collateral damage" is a disgrace."

"We sympathise with the deaths of Asterian soldiers, but the facts are facts; those soldiers put Mariranan lives in danger, including the lives of children. Nothing can be considered a success if the blood of children are on people's hands."

"The Mariranan people are grateful for the words of solidarity we have heard from across the globe - from Moreira, to Nimear, to Songguo, to Satucin. But we haven't had such solidarity from our allies. We haven't had the assurances that this will never happen again; only apologetics for what should be something we can all agree, in that putting children in harms way should be avoided at all costs."

"The people in the last day have protested this barbarism in droves. There is anger here, and I understand. We have suffered through this conflict to long, and the traditional means of ending it have been exhuasted. New strategy is required".

"After consulting with the public the government has decided to hold alongside the upcoming constitutional referendum another both on the current JDF deployment in this country and our membership as a whole in the bloc will be held. The time has come as to ask the people on their decision as to the future of this country, a right that was callously taken away from those children"

Foreign Minister César Romani stated the government was recalling the Asterian ambassador until further notice, with Romani stating the resignation of Asterian defence secretary Trevor McNamara was welcome news. The rest of Asteria's diplomatic staff remain in the embassy however.

President Marques Swen Addresses the Nation
Swen Challenges Foreign Leaders

President Swen Addressing the Nation

Marquette
Just moments ago, President Marques Swen Addressed the nation. Here is the complete transcript:

My Fellow Duquesnians,
Earlier Today, our capital city of Marquette fell victim to extremely violent riots and protests against our policy, and against our people. What was originally supposed to be a peaceful protest was quickly turned into a violent, destructive, and repulsive riot that has injured hundreds of brave officers, as well as innocent, bystanding civilians. These protestors attempted to harm the civil discourse of society by attacking police officers and national guardsmen, by attempting to violently enter our most important government buildings, by looting and destroying local businesses, and by burning our beloved Duquesne Flag. These Protests are said to be in response to the statements made by myself, and by my fellow government officials regarding both our new immigration policies, and in response to our reaction and statement regarding the Federation’s incident in Marirana. The violence demonstrated by the protesters is an attempted test at the will and resolve of our government and of our people. The Republic of Duquesne will not waver its praise of Federation troops and in their bravery during the situation. As President Avery mentioned in his address to the people of the Federation, the troops never intended to harm civilians, rather, they attempted to set up a defensive against fierce, violent insurgent forces. We stand by their actions, and again, offer our complete assistance in bringing peace to the region.

In response to the violence present in our city today, I call on the government of Marirana to directly denounce the actions of their citizens in our country, and to call for peace in our capital city. The actions shown against our law enforcement officials, against our government buildings, against innocent civilians, and against the defining symbol of our country, the Duquesne Flag, are truly unacceptable, and will not be tolerated any further. I also call on all governments and government officials who have made despicable comments about myself, and about President Avery and the brave work of his troops, to refrain from ridiculous, provocative, and uneducated comments about the brave work of Federation Troops, that not only protect the people of Marirana, but protect our people from atrocities such as what happened last week in Grande Marecage.

I have spoken to both the Mayor and the Chief of Police of the City of Marquette, and I have been informed that more protests are expected tomorrow, and throughout the week. Let it be known to any who attempt the violence that ran rampant throughout our capital city today will not be tolerated, and will be prevented by any means necessary. Our Police officers and National Guardsmen will be working over-night to ensure the safety and security of our innocent civilians in Marquette, as well as the businesses, government buildings, and overall functionality of the city.

I pledge once again my full support to President Avery, and I hope to meet with him in the coming days to discuss our new involvement on this battlefield. This agenda will not be suppressed by protests of any means.

To the people of Marquette; We are prepared to keep you and your families safe tomorrow, and we will ensure that what happened today will never happen again.

Thank You, and God Bless The Republic of Duquesne.

Síle Ní Ríain, who has coached the women's team for the past six years, described her "very cautious optimism" about their chances.

SPÁLGLEANN – Glytter's women's football team is preparing for tomorrow's semi-final match against Cheonhae. As they prepare, players and coaches remain confident. There is a growing sense of optimism among the players, whose sentiments were boosted as they eased to victory over Daaqi during Friday's quarter final match. Glytter bested Daaqi 2-0.

"We can win this" said Niamh Nic Cheallach, the team's principle goal-keeper. "We know we can, so we will".

She is one of the few players who have spoken to the press about the team's growing optimism. Some fans have taken to calling Nic Cheallach the gate-keeper for her performance during the games so far.

Glytter's women's team has had a long history of success at the Invictus Games but was disappointed during the 2014 Gatôn Games when they placed fourth, failing to win a medal. With the games in Glytter, they now hope for the ultimate home field advantage.

The team's coach, Síle Ní Ríain, told reporters she had feelings of a "very cautious optimism" but said it was best for the team to remain in the mindset that they can still lose. "The second we convince ourselves its ours is the second we become vulnerable enough to lose" she said.

She praised the dedication of the players, saying that "they have really given it all. No matter how far we get in this, we have a lot to be proud of".

Ní Ríain has coached the team for just over six years now, starting in 2012. She led the team during their defeat in 2014. "It was disappointing of course, but it just wasn't our year" she said. "What mattered was we had found our strengths as a team, as a young time might I add at that. For many of my players that was their first Invictus. They're veterans now and have played together for far longer. They've really grown as a team since then".

The match is set to take place at Spálgleann's Sovereign's Stadium at 13:00 EST. Thousands of fans are expected to attend while over a million are expected to watch it live.

The winner of the match will go on to face either Nematsu or Tirona in the gold medal match while loser will compete for the bronze. These two matches are set to take place on Friday, the day before the men's football tournament's close.

Internationally, the focus is primarily on the men's tournament, but in Glytter it is on the women's matches. Women's football is dominant in Glytter, with more fans and viewers than the men's league. This is due in part to a national strategy to excel in women's competitions at the Invictus Games to increase Glytter's overall medal count. Glytter, a small nation of just over nine million, struggles to compete with much larger nations in men's sports, where it traditionally dedicates fewer resources.

Attempts to change this status quo have been made. Prince John, the Earl of Corofin, brought national interest to men's league after he became a professional footballer. The surprise performance of the Glytteronian team at the last World Cup brought new interest to men's football. It was hoped the Glytteronian men's team would perform well in the men's tournament, but they failed to build a momentum and were eliminated before the knock-out stage.

RICHARDSON CRITICIZES FEDERATION'S AVERY OVER OSPELETTO, CALLS FOR SUSPENSION OF ACTIVE INTERVENTION IN MARIRANA

Prime Minister Rupert Richardson said he was "appalled" by the operation which left a number of children dead.
Ashcombe, Estmere- Estmere's Prime Minister has joined a growing portion of the international community that is criticizing the Federation of Asteria for a military operation that saw a high number of civilian casualties, including a number of children. During a firefight with the Ospeletto Cartel, a platoon of Federation Army Rangers took shelter in a school building in the Mariranan city of Ospeletto, while school was in session. The fight saw some nineteen Federation soldiers killed, some of which were part of the extraction mission.

"This incident is tragic, it is devastating" Prime Minister Richardson said at a press conference held this morning. "What can only be accurately described as bellicose carelessness triggered this horrific sequence of events. There must be accountability for this carelessness".

The Prime Minister praised the resignation of the Federation's Secretary of Defense, Trevor McNamara, calling it an "appropriate first step". "Accountability starts at the top, and as the head of the Federation's defense apparatus [McNamara's] resignation is welcomed. However, it does not change the fact that a number of children, in addition to other civilians, were killed in this incident because of failures within the Federation's armed forces. A full-scale, independent investigation should occur, one that President Avery's own government and own party should recuse itself from. It is the principled thing to do in the wake of this preventable tragedy".

"The intervention in Marirana should be suspended immediately. While this is damaging to the Federation's interests in the region, how can we, the international community, be sure this incident will not be repeated? How do we know that again a number of Federation troops do not go barging into a school again, or a church or a hospital, because of faulty intelligence? Active offensive military operations should be suspended until a full review of the Federation's military intelligence apparatus is completed" he said.

Richardson also offered a scathing criticism of President Avery, criticizing his response to the incident. "The buck stops with you, Mr. Avery. You must accept accountability for this tragedy". Referencing Secretary McNamara's statements to the Asterian press, Richardson said that "It was the President who authorized this extraction mission, knowing very well the risk it posed to the civilian population. In addition, your attempts to deflect blame for the incident are not worthy of the office you hold. The entire point of military intelligence is so that 'improperly marked' schools are accounted for".

The Federation's President cited improper markings on the back entrance of the school building as the cause of the incident, saying that "according to reports from Rangers that were involved, there were no clear markings identifying the building as a school." He defended the soldiers against claims by other states that they used the students as "human-shields", saying quote "the notion that Asterian soldiers would knowingly use civilians - let alone children - as 'human shileds', is not only insulting, but it is a blatant lie".

"Given that the Federation portrays itself as the 'Leader of the Free World', I must say that if the free world they leads is so reckless, so bellicose, so unprincipled, all the while being unapologetic about its missteps, who can blame nations from turning away from the democratic process when the country that claims to defend it causes the deaths of their children while in school".

Richardson offered a much stronger criticism of the government of Duquesne. He accused the country's government of "unnecessarily provoking tensions" with Marirana, who the Prime Minister noted was Duquesne's ally. "You would think members of the same alliance would treat one another as such, not as enemies. The bellicose and border-line xenophobic rhetoric coming from [Duquesne] officials is as unhelpful as it is wrong".

"I am simply appalled by the incident and the response of the Joint Defense Force. If they refuse to hold themselves accountable, the international community has mechanisms to do so. Do not make us use them".
