I've been slowly teaching myself Inkscape, and can get by enough by cobbling together the bits I have picked up so far. I have only the vaguest of notions for how to use vectors...I can source vector images, perform basic manipulations on them, and create bitmaps from some other images, but my effectiveness is quite hit-or-miss.

Do you have any advice or tips regarding the creation of images, or recommendations for other ways to tackle the task?

The internet seems to swear by inkscape but I can't get the hang of it.. firstly I don't even know where the layers option is, or if they even have layers.

Ah great, thanks for the recommendation...I will check it out.

If you're using the term "layers" in the way I am thinking, they have a tab at the top called "LAYER" for raising and lowering objects in that way. Also, PgUp and PgDn are the shortcuts

Very interesting...

I do have such a phone, though it is quite old now. But I will definitely check that out, as it sounds like it could be quite useful.
