The afterlife in your nation?

Postby Vallermoore » Tue Jun 27, 2017 8:25 pm

What are the beliefs (or lack of them ) about an afterlife in your nation?

Here sapient ponies who are religious think that good ponies go to a place named the Happy Fields where apples can be plucked off trees without anyone caring and every pony lives in luxury. Bad ponies either go to be tortured in Tartarus or are trapped in their own dead and decomposing bodies.

Changelings who are religious think that good changelings go to the Plains of Love where hunger is unknown and they live in utter luxury and pleasure, whilst bad changelings go to the Plains of Woe where they freeze, starve and are under attack by windigos (the two creatures hate each other as they interfere with each other's food.

Religious humans have their own ideas of Heaven and Hell with Heaven being whatever one wants and Hell being a place of fire, ice and various torments.

Sidhae especially in military circles can often be heard referring to Halls of Eternal Glory, a Sidh equivalent to Valhalla, where those fallen in service of the Imperium rest in glory alongside the Emperor.

This belief isn't to be taken at face value, being more of a metaphor as well as a physical resting place for the fallen. The actual Halls are a huge necropolis on the Sidh holy world of Aedun, the first world ever settled by Sidhae, where the Emperor lies entombed along with the diamondized ashes of every Sidh ever fallen in battle, each diamond being inlaid in the walls of it's titanic chambers along with the fallen soldier's name inlaid in gold. Many of the names lack diamonds, their owners either missing in action or their bodies never recovered for proper burial. Ascending to the Halls therefore means having one's name recorded in it's walls after death to be remembered and honoured by future generations.

Other than that, Sidhae do not have any other widespread beliefs pertaining to afterlife, those who hold any holding them privately.

---

With the advances of technology, however, afterlife or at least rebirth is becoming a very real possibility. The CABAL network is one of them, an early effort to network all Sidhae and store their consciousnesses for revival in a new body or continued existence in digital form. The project was never completed because of the Age of War, CABAL now serving as an Imperium-wide data network instead. It is believed that the Emperor's consciousness survives within it, though such a notion is deemed heretical by many, and even those who endorse it question whether it would be possible to extract and defragment it at all, provided it's even there.

A more recent effort that has met with mixed success is the secret Avatar project, which studies the possibility of storing Sidh consciousness in implanted quantum chips and then re-uploading it in a new body. The transfer of an entire consciousness to a storage device is a very challenging task even with Sidh technology, but the real hard part is re-loading it back into a new body. Clone bodies have been found to consistently fail - without accumulated information stored outside the brain (such as muscle memory), the uploaded personalities were simply no longer their old selves, becoming merely new personalities with memories of deceased individuals, having to re-learn their old skills all anew and thus defeating the purpose of the project (i.e. military uses). Efforts to write stored personalities over those of already conscious host bodies have likewise failed, the subjects usually going irrepairably insane. Thus far, the greatest success for the latter method has been a single individual with a metastable dual personality which can best be described as controlled schizophrenia.

The most common and safest way for a Sidh to continue existing after the demise of one's mortal shell is as an AI. Sidhae are much too paranoid to develop fully-sapient AIs despite their obvious utility in many respects, and hence take instead to installing the consciousnesses of living Sidhae on AI platforms. The result is a trustworthy self-aware AI with the personality and memories of a Sidh. However, being forever trapped in the circuits of a machine in a dream-like state can become a rather hellish experience, so few Sidhae agree to make this sacrifice and serve even after physical death.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

The more God in one's mouth, the less in one's heart.

The afterlife in Themiclesia consists of an eternity without want or pain, no exceptions. Themiclesian believe that spirits, once free of their corporeal constraints, will continue to walk the Earth and interact with the living, only there is no death, parting, or sadness; they have the powers of teleportation so they can do whatever they want to.

There isn't really an afterlife or Heaven or Hell in Kremvhism. We believe in reincarnation, and what one is reincarnated into is completely random. And it is only the soul that is moved between bodies. One's personality and mind die when their current body dies.

For some warrior-minded people, Ovn is regarded as a sort of Heaven, and is said to be the resting place of Raguna Riga, the great warrior queen.

An overwhelming majority of Ndakenes practice faiths that are among the Abrahamic religions, so they the majority believe in Heaven and Hell.
'Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.' (II Timothy 4:1-5 NKJV)

The majority of Goths follows Heathendom, the national religion of the Germanic peoples. There are three afterlife destinations in Heathendom:

Haljo - Hell. The place where wicked men go when they die, doomed to suffer as gnawed corpses by Airmunagands on the Nawastranda. Others, who have lead unnoticed lives with no piety, are resigned to Nibulahaims.

Walahalla - Valhalla. Where men who have died a glorious death in battle go.

Fulkawaggs - Fólkvangr. Where men who have either died in battle or those who have led pious lives go.

In the dominant religion of Essu Beti, Beuwan, there are thirteen afterlives- five hells and eight heavens. The one you go to is based on not how you lived your life, but how you died. Unfortunately for y'all, I haven't yet come up with the names of the afterlives, what they're like, and which death is associated with each.

In a related but more minor religion, there are five hells, six heavens, and one neutral afterlife. Yes, this has been the subject of angry debates between the religions before.
Trust Factbooks, not stats.

The Ambassador of Essu Beti is Iksana Gayan and he's an elf. He’s irritable and a damn troll and everything he says is IC only. I would never be so tactless OOC.

We do expect a minor loss in revenue due to this, but this will be greatly offset by both the long and short-term benefits of the infrastructure project. If your job is negatively impacted by the island closure, please send a letter or verbal message via courier to the Council so that we can add you to the list of beneficiaries of foreign aid.

Torjthistan has a mandated state religion devoted to Emperor Zokirjan-Boltorkhoy M. It is said that he will personally meet with the dead once their spirits leave their bodies and that he will hold them in his hands, raise them above his head, and throw them into the heavens of such wondrous happiness that it cannot be comprehended by people on earth. The Emperor regularly adds new supposed glories to be found in the afterlife when he decides on his increasingly restrictive new laws.
Poverty-stricken, apocalyptic cesspool of nuclear waste, vast steppe and mountains being ruined by state-run industry, horrifying detention centers filled with innocent people, an insane religious cult centered on a sadistic dictator, mass public executions, nightmarish soviet-era industrial cities, and constant international tension and civil wars.
