Pro Deo et Humanitate

Greetings, NationStates. It is my pleasure to announce the creation of MASSACHUSETTS ACADEMY, the premier university in all of NationStates.* The university will be offering a wide range of curricular opportunities** for those looking to learn something new over the summer, taught by qualified NSG members. Our "classroom" experience is much like the Harkness Roundtable at the famed Phillips Exeter Academy, in that the class is centered around a discussion as the primary method of learning. We plan on seeing lively debates fill up the forums of our school over this summer. Enroll now, and you will receive top priority in our Admission process, which is so selective that only 100% of applicants so far*** have been accepted. If you're already excited for this (out-of-character) university experience****, take a look at our current courses, in which you can learn something new today:

  • Spanish by United Massachusetts: Take Spanish class in order to become conversationally fluent by the end of the summer. Taught by a Spanish-Speaker himself, this course will allow you be able to read, speak, and write in Spanish. Currently the second most-spoken in the world, Spanish is rapidly rising in importance. Get on board the train before it sails--learn one of the most useful languages in the world, right here on NationStates.
  • Philosophy by United Massachusetts: Why are you hear? Is there a God? What can we know to be true? Learn about the history of philosophy, spanning from the pre-Socratics to modern day, all here on NationStates. The course will cover the teachings, writings, and thoughts of various philosophical camps throughout history.
  • History by Cuprum: Why study history? The answer is because we virtually must, to gain access to the laboratory of human experience. When we study it reasonably well, and so acquire some usable habits of mind, as well as some basic data about the forces that affect our own lives, we emerge with relevant skills and an enhanced capacity for informed citizenship, critical thinking, and simple awareness. The uses of history are varied. Studying history can help us develop some literally “salable” skills, but its study must not be pinned down to the narrowest utilitarianism. Some history—that confined to personal recollections about changes and continuities in the immediate environment—is essential to function beyond childhood. Some history depends on personal taste, where one finds beauty, the joy of discovery, or intellectual challenge. Between the inescapable minimum and the pleasure of deep commitment comes the history that, through cumulative skill in interpreting the unfolding human record, provides a real grasp of how the world works.

* The only one at the time of printing, but I digress. It's still an accomplishment.
** Currently only two, but as soon as we get people signing up to teach things they know about, I assure you that we will have more
*** Out of one
**** Not in any way a registered or legally recognized university, but hey, at least we're better than Trump's.

Note to Moderators: I understand that so far, this is not material for NSG. However, this will become a discussion about the potential benefits of a project like this. Any actual classwork will happen on Discord. Please pardon my thread until sign ups are closed. Thanks, UM
