Are you bitter enemies or mutual rivals?: Not bitter at all, the rivalry is entirely friendly and has been since independence. South Africa and Great Karoo have a shared culture and history, which makes their relationship quite unique. Kinda like the relationship between Canada and the USA, or Australia and New Zealand. The incumbent President of South Africa and the Prime Minister of Great Karoo both have a tradition of making bets on the Rugby World Cup, with the loser having to do things like donate to a charity of the victor's choice, or wear their rival team's jersey for a few weeks.

In our war it ended as a draw, inconclusive, and being that we the mightest nation didn't achive anything short of Victory was humiliating. Why are you rivals with this nation?: Formerly the Strathan Empire and the Kingdom of Skerray were close allies, bound in a close personal union, with the Emperor of Strathy also being the King of Skerray, beginning in 826CE when Empress Fionnghuala married Theodore X of Skerray. Following their deaths, their son, Johannes I became Emperor of Strathy and later King of Skerray. The personal union continued for centuries, with a 156 year interregnum in Skerray in the 16th century being the only interruption. In 1781, Skerray was brought into the Strathan Empire by the Articles of Union, with the Skerrian parliament mostly dissolved and the Strathan parliament having direct control over Skerrian affairs.

In 1910, following a revolution, Skerray declared her independence from Strathy under a radical republican government. The Empire intervened militarily to regain control, but the resulting war brought about the Strathan Revolution which saw the monarchy deposed in 1919. During the years of the United Socialist States of Strathy, Skerray was forcibly brought back into the Union, resulting in three further wars between the two countries.

Following the collapse of the U.S.S.S. in 2002 and the restoration of the monarchy, Skerray was granted its independence. However, Strathy retained the City State of Partaig and its port, this having been an area of predominantly Strathan population. Radical republicans and nationalist movements have caused disruption in the state since 2002, but it has been brought under control in recent years.

Are you bitter enemies or mutual rivals?: Many Strathans still see Skerray as being part of Strathy and ethnic Strathans residing in Strathy still hope for reunification. Many in Skerray see the Strathan Monarchy as everything they ever fought against and whilst most don't explicitly want to bring down Strathy, there are some groups calling for all ethnic Strathans to be deported and Partaig to be taken from Strathy. In general, though, the populations are generally friendly to one another now and the governments have been working side by side to mend relations.

Why are you rivals with this nation?: The Confederacy does not recognize Appalachia's independence. Specifically, they claim approximately the southern 1/3rd of our territory as their own, although de facto they only control a couple small towns that were seized in the 1981 border conflict. The CSA and Appalachia have no diplomatic ties, formal or otherwise. The CSA does not attempt to actually exert its claim over Appalachia's territory because this would cause Appalachia's other allies in North America to come to its defense. On multiple occasions, the Confederacy has kidnapped Appalachian citizens who have been caught in their lands in order to forcibly 'repatriate' them as CSA citizens.

Why are you rivals with this nation?: Charellia and Ourdria have been hostile to one another for a number of reasons over the years. Charellia has long mistrusted the ethnic nationalism of the Ourdrian state, as there have always been factions within the country that would like to bring Charellia's ourd-majority provinces under their control. This mistrust peaked in a brief war in 1910. Chrarellia has also objected to the persecution of the Oraculist religion by the Ourdrian government, which has been a near-constant factor since the 1930s. Between 1935 and 1955, diplomatic relations were essentially nil, due to the hostility of President Undran. Relations improved somewhat following the coup of 1956, which replaced Undran with Dzarn, who took a more conciliatory stance toward Charellia, eventually signing a non-aggression treaty in the 1980s. However, relations were never friendly, and have become increasingly tense since Dzarn's death in 2013.

The Ourdrians, for their part, consider the Charellians both arrogant and hypocritical. They have accused us of forcibly annexing ourd-majority regions and subjugating them to a non-ourd majority. They claim that Charellia does not respect the Ourdrian culture and has actively sought to undermine their traditional clan system. During the Undran period, ideas of racial purity also played a role in Ourdian hostility (Charellian means bastard in their language), however during the Dzarnist period disputes centered more on our competing political and economic systems.The Whitston government has also accused us of violating the non-aggression pact by sending our navy into the West Tagwaran Islands.

As the two largest powers in the region, Charellia and Ourdria have frequently butted heads on issues of foreign policy. As early as 1896, we came into conflict, backing opposite sides in the Sililan Civil War. Charellia supported South Silila, while Ourdria supported the north. We have also clashed over economic and political interests in the West Tagwaran Islands.

Why are you rivals with this nation?: Until 1930, Pacina was called North Silila. That pretty much explains it.

To elaborate, the king of Pacina is technically the king of Silila, but an elected regent has ruled in his stead since the Civil War of 1896, in which which the Sililan Parliament attempted to depose the king and establish a republic. While they were successful in gaining a foothold in South Silila, the king was able to hold onto power in the north. This led to a division of the country along the Strait of Pacina, creating the Kingdom of North Silila and the State of South Silila. Relations only grew worse following the Great Reform of 1903, which saw South Silila, among other things, dismantle the High Church of Pacina and replace it with a new state religion. North Silila moved in the opposite direction, after religious leaders seized control of the government in 1930 and forced the king to declare the Theocracy of Pacina.
