Your Nation's Date and Time

Postby Novum Lux » Thu Apr 27, 2017 8:11 pm

I'm curious to know how your nation organizes its date and time formats. Here is a quote from one of our factbooks that describes our time and date standards:

The Commonwealth of Novum Lux uses decimal time, a system of time originating from the French Revolution. In decimal time, days are divided into ten hours, each hour contains 100 minutes, and each minute contains 100 seconds.

The main advantage of a decimal time system is that, since the base used to divide the time is the same as the one used to represent it, the whole time representation can be handled as a single string. Therefore, it becomes simpler to interpret a timestamp and to perform conversions. For instance, 1:20:00 is 1 decimal hour and 23 decimal minutes, or 1.20 hours, or 120 minutes.

This property also makes it straightforward to represent a timestamp as a fractional day, so that 27.04.2017.05.20.00 can be interpreted as five decimal hours and 20 decimal minutes after the start of that day, or 0.520 (52%) of a day through that day. It also adjusts well to digital time representation using epochs, in that the internal time representation can be used directly both for computation and for user-facing display.

Calendars are organized in a similar way to clocks. Rather than dividing years based on the revolution around the sun or the lunar cycle, a year is represented as 100 days. There are no months, and every ten days is a week. Therefore, there are ten weeks in every year, and 100 days. The days of he week are as follows:

Prima, Duoda, Trida, Quartida, Sextida, Septida, Octida, Nonida, and Decada.

Years are numbers from the start of the "Anno Dimini" portion of the Gregorian Calendar. From this year (01 Jan 2017) to the start of "Anno Dimini" is 736400 days. If each decimal year is 100 days, then we are in the year 7364. The decimal calendar in the Kingdom uses "Anno Primo", or AP, instead of "Anno Dimini". Anno Primo means "the first year" in Latin.

Let's say today's date in the Gregorian calendar is 27 04 2017 at 12:00 PM UTC. In the Decimal Calendar of the Kingdom, it is 7364.46.05.00.00. The first number is the year (7364), the second number is the day (46), the third number is the hour (05). the fourth and fifth are the minutes and seconds respectively (0).

Just think, if you are 20 years old in the Gregorian calendar, that means you are about 7300 days old. That would make you 73 years old in the Decimal Calendar. This can often lead to some confusion among foreigners who ask Novum Luxans how old they are.

In Yuunly, time is measured in millidays (md). 1 day = 1000 md.
A milliday (md) is almost 1½ minutes, 10 md = almost ¼ hour, 100 md = almost 2½ hours.
To be more exact: 1 md = 86.4 seconds, 10 md = 14 min 24 sec, 100 md = 2 h 24 min.
1 hour and 28.8 seconds = 42 md. 1 minute and 0.48 seconds = 0.7 md. 1.000512 seconds = 11.58 µd.

Office hours are usually from 350 md (8.24 am) to 700 md (4.48 pm).

The Yuunly calendar has 13 months of 28 days each + 1 extra day (2 in leap years).
There is no week. By law, employees must have at least 10 days off per month and are not allowed to work more than 10 days in a row without at least one day off.
As the day starts on midnight, the year starts on the shortest day, which here in the northern hemisphere is around 22 December. So the first month starts around 22 December and ends around 18 January (plus or minus a day or two depending on leap years). 28 April is around the 16th day of the 6th month. The months do not have any official names. Unofficial names vary from state to state. They are often agricultural in nature (e.g. "strawberry month").

Gandoor utilizes the 24-hour clock for all official purposes and has done so since 1922, although referring to times by the 12-hour clock is still common when speaking. Times are written using the HH.MM format and it is considered standard to utilize non-standard notations in circumstances such as businesses that are open past midnight or in TV scheduling. (Examples: A store that, in the 12-hour clock, would be open from 7.00 am to 2.00 am in Gandoor would have its hours listed as: 07.00 to 26.00 and a TV show that runs from 11.30 pm to 1.30 am would have the time it airs listed as: 23.30 to 25.30)

The Gandoorese calendar is the Gregorian calendar and dates are written either the Day Month Year or Year Month Day formats, with the latter usually only used when writing in Japanese.

TDC uses the 24 hour clock all round, and formats times like 12:00:00. For instance, a restaurant opens at 8:30:00 and closes at 20:00:00. Day formatting is DD/MM/YYYYY
We use the Holocene Calendar. The current time/day it is in Copenhagen right now is:
6:58:15, 27/4/12017 HE.

Time format: MM:HH|SS ; Considered weird by most foreigners, we tell time as the #th minute of the #th hour. If necessary we add seconds by saying "and # seconds.
Clock format: 24 hour
Date format: DD|Mon|YYYY

Example: 01:23|59 28|Apr|2017 would be 11:01 and 59 seconds PM 04/28/17 in US terms

AST time. The Rivièrans tried to change it to decimal, but the other native Dirlanders, English, Icelanders and Finns didn't accept it.

I like the way you say the minutes first. It makes sense, since we say days first. (OOC: Unless you live in the States, of course.) Only, adding seconds at the end seems to ruin the whole system in a way. To me, it would make sense to have it like this:

A- "What is the exact time at this moment, kind sir?"

B- "It's the 30th second of the 1st minute of the 6th hours, kind lady."

A- "Oh, thank you so very much sir."

Officially we use the Gregorian calendar and 12 hour clock, though the 24 hour clock is sometimes used. Some religious days follow their own calendars, such as the Islamic calendar and Hebrew calendar.

It's the year 68 Eläkä, 68 years after the high leaders birth.

You see, King Onni was born on that day, on the holy mountain of Emtybercans, and the river Pisse turned to beer and a mighty drumbeat was heard from the mountain that day.

Dates are written in the order of day, month, year. For example:
Short form: 28.4.1984
Long form: 28 апреля 1984 г. (Or 28 April 1984, in English.)

We use the 24-hour-clock, with midnight always written as 00:00 rather than 24:00.

Generally, time is written with leading zeros, but they are omitted in the date. (So, one would write 09:00 but not 08.04.1984.)

Grundprilaborado uses the Holocene year format (ex. 12017 instead of 2017), which measures from the outbreak of the Neolithic revolution.
Also, the months in our calendar are divided to represent the seasons (being located in a more temperate region, we use the standard four). There are no weeks.
We utilize a 24-hour clock (ss:mm:hh). Our date format is DD-MM-YYYYY.
Example (based on time of posting [EDT]) = 37:44:18 | 40-01-12017

In Ugol, we have the 24-hour time form, we use the DD/MM/YYYY, we have the Ugolian calendar, that mean that the calendar is 100 years and 1 month behind the gregorian calendar, but on some months and in a leap year the calendar is very different, like 1 May is 31 March, and 30 March is 29 February or 1 March, and 31 March is 2 or 1 March. And the weirdest is that in Ugol, New Year's eve is on 31 January

For Example: It is currently 30 March 1917

Today's date is the 1st of Pentember, 1847. The time in Roanoke, CDT is 15:30 UAT+7.

The Archoncy of Thama spans the UAT (Universal Arkigian Time) time zones -2, +2, and between +4 and +8.

The Archoncy uses the same time system as the rest of Asnea, based on the ancient, pre-apocalypse Interplanetary Standard Time. An Asnean day is a little more than 3 minutes longer than the Terran Day. For several thousand years this meant that seconds were technically slightly longer, however as electric and mechanical timekeeping was unavailable for several millenia, this was not a problem. The system was readjusted to a day of 24 hours which where each 60 minutes and 8 seconds long once access to ancient databases was reacquired in the year 1847.

The 384 day long year is split in accordance with IST into 12 months with generic latinised names*, on Asnea each of the months is 32 days long, and as the stellar year is almost exact to the day, leap years do not exist.
* Uncember, Bicember, Tricember, Tetrember, Pentember, Hexember, September, October, November, December, Undecember, and Dodecember.

The week is still the arbitrary ancient Babylonian 7 day week, with days of the week named in English, albeit somewhat corrupted, being in both human dialects of English: Moondag, Tiwsdag, Wotansdag, Thorsdag, Fridag, Saturdag, and Sundag.

The current year is 1847 PA, based on the Peace calendar counting days before and after year zero, the year of the signing of the Arkigian Peace accord, Pax Arkigia. In IST the year would currently be 19046 HCE (Holocene Era), or 9046 AD in the Gregorian calendar. Humans have inhabited Asnea since the year 4572 BPA (Before Pax Arkigia), or the IST year 12279 HCE (2279 AD). This knowledge is recent as for 5 millennia most of the knowledge of the world before the colonisation of Asnea was unknown.

Today is Sunday, April 30th, 2017 AD. It 1:30 PM.

Here is how today's full date and time would be written out:
This Thirtieth Sunday of April, In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Seventeen, at 1:30 PM.

TurtleShroom operates on the Gregorian Calendar.

There are three hundred sixty five days in a year, with a Leap Year every four years. Each day is twenty four hours long. There are sixty minutes in a hour. There are sixty seconds in a minute.

Each seven days is referred to as a "week". In each week, there are seven days: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

There are fifty two weeks in a year, each week consisting of seven days. Two weeks is called a "fortnight". Two fortnights are called a "month". There are twelve months in a year: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December.
Four months have thirty days. Seven months have thirty one days. One month has twenty eight (and on Leap Yers, it has twenty nine).

Time is denoted by the twelve hour clock, divided into AM and PM segments. A twenty four hour clock (known as "Army Time") is used only by the military and space agencies/corporations.

Lastly, dates are denoted MM/DD/YYYY BC/AD.
