Equity: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs"

Freedom: Basis of humanity for Prozitians.

Empathy: Mutual understanding between sentient and sapient creatures. Doesn't always apply to animals.

Purpose: Prozitians find the idea of "living for the sake of it" appalling.

Collective Individualism: The belief that collectives can't function without individuals realizing their worth and mindset, and that individualism can't exist without a functioning community.

Rebelliousness: A constant desire to challenge the status quo and authority.

Progressiveness: Willingness to constantly move forwards in science and philosophy, getting closer and closer to singularity.

Acceptance: there is a real sense of “there is room for all sorts here”. With our wide open spaces and nomadic lifestyle, and free-flowing movement of people and lack of any well defined borders for much of history, cat-herders have been welcoming even to outsiders other societies might reject. Today this makes us a powerhouse in both culture and technology.

On the other hand, we also have...

Tradition: the ways of cat-herding are defined by a history that goes back thirty-three and a half centuries. Although all newcomers had their own contributions, eventually they all adopted the ways. These traditions not only help us integrate newcomers, but also fortify us against threats to the tolerant society, e.g. nationalism, flag-fetishism.

Internationalism: The working people have no country. Patriotism is actively discouraged in favor of solidarity.

Anarchism: No one has the right to place themselves above another’s without consent.

Sacrifice: Most able-bodied adults in the Commune have fought in at least one International Brigade of one civil war or another. Blood must be shed for freedom.

Among the most important Redternetian values that have guided the nation are:

Equality/Equity:
Ensuring individuals may have ample opportunity to to fully and freely develop their personalities and find fulfilment, without hindrance by capital. In Redternetia, without the disadvantage to the majority that we call "class" we have created for ourselves a true meritocracy. Equality also is part of our accepting nature towards minorities of faith, race, gender identity, etc. All those who find themselves lost may find a home here.

Peace:
War is what Redternetia strives to avoid whenever the possibility of it presents itself. War pits the working class of nations against one another and causes needless destruction to one or both countries involved - indeed setting it back decades or more. While Redternetia does prepare itself for the possibility if it were to ever to be the victim of attack, it stands to gain not a single inch of land or resources from from it.

Development:
The Redternetian revolution left the land in ashes, from which Redternetia has since risen. Developing our union of Scarlet Republics has been the greatest source of pride for our national peoples and what truly makes us proud to call ourselves "Reds". Indeed for many, particularly of the now older generations of the Scarlet Republics, it seems almost like a dream that has come true; going from a colonized, divided up nation, once rife with illiteracy and mass poverty, to a now prosperous and stable united socialist union capable of creating a stable and cultured life for all.

At some point, this source of pride took its own shape in the form of national policy; what is known as the "Quality and Quantity" policy. We seek to create bigger and better things for our peoples and our international comrades and friends benefit; and so our pride is also reflected in our national development.

Proletarian Internationalism:
A great revolutionary spirit resides in Redternetia. We actively seek to make ourselves part of international socialist projects and assist in any way possible, as well as propose our own ideas that mainly revolve around developing the solidarity and friendship of all the worlds working class. That said, we are part of numerous left-wing international organizations. Individuals may also take it upon themselves to join as volunteers abroad, doing things from helping to fight revolutionary wars with our struggling comrades or assist as aid workers wherever they are needed.

Furthermore, though peace is our hope and our aim, should the world fall into a nuclear apocalypse Redternetia shall use its full arsenal to protect its comrades and annihilate their foes, k thx bye.

Ruritane has some virtues that historians and poets have made up, but the Ruritanaise just laugh at them and knows that they are made up and don't apply to them. Here's a list anyway.

[*]Religious tolerance. But not any other kind of tolerance.
[*]Rudeness. Rudeness is a virtue.
[*]Love of food and comfort.
[*]Belief in female superiority.
[*]Ambition. This kind of goes with the religious tolerance thing.
[*]Patriotism. This is the only value that Ruritanaises actually admit exists.

Postby Lillorainen » Thu Mar 26, 2020 7:12 am

Lillorainen's national virtues (does not include common stereotypes!):

  • Sincerity. In Lillorainen, people typically believe, that honesty and sincerity are important. This can go to an extent, that in case of a conflict between honesty and politeness, honesty practically always wins, no matter how painful truth can be, as Lillos tend to think of this as a less painful way than lying out of false politeness and making the persons opposite oneself find out the truth over different channels later on.
  • Sense of community. Lillorainians tend to consider themselves individuals as a part of a greater community, and communities as essential instances made up of individuals. Contrary to popular belief, individualism is not very distinct; while individual freedoms are granted and thoroughly upheld, unmindful solo efforts are frowned upon.
  • Meritocracy. In Lillorainen, it is a widespread belief, that a position of power should be assigned according to an individual's personal merits, abilities, and knowledge - the current political system is supposed to reflect this idea. Due to both this and historical experience with the opposite, Lillos tend to remain at readiness for organized resistance against the possible takeover of a regime failing to uphold the level of competence required to take over responsibility. This also favors a huge degree of progressivism in Lillorainen, especially when it comes to technology.
  • Rationality. When discussing, use rational arguments and hold your emotions back as much as you can. The idea behind this Lillorainian way is that emotional arguments are too subjective to use where objectivity is required.
  • Tradition. Lillorainians are very keen at observing traditions, in particular those of religious festivities such as Midsummer and Yule, but also temporal ones. Traditional life in Lillorainen cannot be generalized, as it is compound of various regional/local traditions and habits, especially when it comes to feasting, foodstuffs and beverages, decorations of one's home, as well as speaking their dialect (in fact, Standard German is limited to literary and educational use. Outside these contexts, Lillos practically always use their dialects for communication). This, on the other hand, tends to lead to the false assumption, that Lillorainen in general and Lillorainian cuisine in particular might not be too open for influences from abroad - they simply integrate themselves. This gets to ...
  • Open-mindedness. Despite keenly upholding traditions, Lillorainen also has a long history of making contact abroad. While not necessarily internationalist (quite on the contrary), Lillorainen is generally welcoming to foreigners, and Lillorainen's general ease and calmness makes it easy to get integrated into Lillorainian society. Likewise, there is only a very small percentage of adult Lillorainians who have never traveled abroad and also don't intend to do so. Aside from that, hospitality is quite a thing in Lillorainen.

And a very special one, which is quite particular, but shouldn't go unmentioned:
  • Purity of the Beer. Beer brewery and consumption has a long tradition in Lillorainen, and the Lillorainian Purity Law, which has been around for quite a few centuries, only allows a specified set of ingredients. As a cultural custom, Lillorainen's national beverage should always be enjoyed pure. Mixing beer is frowned upon.
Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

Affability: Andocarians were taught from an early age to be sociable and pleasant to talk to, and not come off as abrasive, arrogant, or brooding. South Anglophones and Hispanic Andocarians are warmer and friendlier than North Anglophones and far Northerners, though the latter are more cultured and polite.

Tolerance: Andocarian culture is highly socially developed. Tolerance towards others’ differences is natural in the spirit of Andocarian people, unlike some other countries where tolerance is expected, but some won’t follow through. It does come with a caveat though, as tolerance isn’t synonymous with acceptance. So just because an Andocarian tolerates an outsider, not coming off as hostile, doesn’t mean they accept that person, or fully accept that person. But in many cases, especially in larger cities, people are naturally accepting of others’ differences because of exposure from a young age.

Respect: Andocarians are taught to be civil from a young age, even if they strongly disagree with someone. Andocarians are good at compromising, as they are taught to acknowledge that everyone is worthy, and have dignity.

Humility: People often acknowledge the amazing traits of others, though they also see value in themselves also. Andocarians often have healthy egos and can see value in both themselves and other people.

* Civility: One of Andocarians' greatest virtues are civility.

Honor, strength, reliability, and fidelity. One of our most important though, is strength of belief in your ideals. Everybody has different morals and ideals, but if you are constantly changing yours, you won’t be respected here. If you stay with your ideals and are willing to fight for them, you will be respected, regardless of what those ideals are. You may not be liked, but you will be respected.

Community

Shalotte is extremely community-orientated, even in its largest settlements. As isolated and harsh an environment as Shalotte has placed considerable strain on its people, and has historically demanded cooperation in order to survive. No individual is dispensable, as the work of each person can potentially determine if the people of a whole settlement will go hungry, freeze, do without necessary tools, and the like. If one person struggles, everybody struggles, and Shalottes are prone to working together to ensure that doesn't happen. It ensures that communities look after each other, share what they can, and lift up those who are struggling.

This focus on community has even transferred into their politics; governance is highly decentralised, with most settlements having their own 'parliament', at which all of the adult residents of a settlement will meet and decide upon the business of the week.

Hard-working

One of the greatest social faux pas in Shalotte society is to be viewed as 'lazy'. When, as outlined above, the entire community depends on each individual for its survival, to be viewed as not pulling one's weight is a cause for alarm. Shalottes pride themselves on their work ethic and ingenuity, making decent lives for themselves despite the harsh environment and limited resources and technologies available to them.

Efficient

Living as they do on a harsh, resource-poor archipelago, Shalottes have established a reputation for efficiency. Nothing goes to waste, and everything is reused. Tools are built to last, and melted down or converted when they are no longer useful. There are bricks in modern houses that were first carved a thousand years ago. Wood, a rare commodity, is used sparingly, and only for things that are expected to last for a long time. And there is no such thing as 'food wastage' in a Shalotte household - everything has a purpose, and Shalottes can find it. They are ingenious in their frugalness.

Egalitarianism

Similar to the community aspect, Shalottes are generally not disposed to enforced 'gender roles' and the like. While their traditionally matrilineal society does tend to slant them towards a view of 'women = organisers, men = workers', in daily life anybody with hands is important to survival, and must pitch-in. A woman who can work steel is just as valuable to them as a man who can work steel, and there are accordingly no limits imposed on who can do what. A typical community will see a mix of men and women doing the same kinds of work.

Loyalty

Shalotte society is a mixture of clans, which are typically families or groups of families united under the same banner, with a 'matriarch' of sorts sitting at the head. Clan loyalty is considered to be a virtue, and though in their distant past this loyalty to one's clan caused some conflict, in modern times it is less tribal and more - one again - community-minded. Some clans almost form micro-nations within Shalotte, as entire settlements are occupied and governed by single clans. This makes crime or any other kind of betrayal an act of familial disloyalty, one of the worst slights a Shalotte can commit.

Reverence for the Domnaeni

Since the aforementioned inter-clan violence that ravaged the isles between 800 B.C. and 100 A.D., peace was brought about after a new covenant was made between them, which placed Clan Selgovae as a kind of 'over-arching' clan, to which all clans are loyal and behind which they all rally. Clan Selgovae is now considered to be the 'clan of clans', a form of 'super-family' to which all Shalottes belong.

The Matriarch of Clan Selgovae therefore also becomes the Domnaeni of Shalotte, the ruling monarch. Various translations for the word have floated around over the years, but to most Shalottes it means 'Beloved Mother'. She is considered to be glue that holds Shalotte together, responsibile for law, order, inter-clan disputes, and even spirituality, and continues to be regarded as the source of the archipelago's millennia-long peace to this day. It would be difficult to find a Shalotte who doesn't hold the Domnaeni in high regard.

Spiritual

Shalotte spirituality is informed by the environment in which they have lived and survived for thousands of years, and touches nearly everything they do. Whether planting a harvest, building a house, sailing an ocean, or studying in higher education, there is an Illuoch-taer to which a Shalotte will pray and make an offering to for success. The ruling body of their religion, the Draeyrn, has a hand in everything from education to healthcare, and are often at the centre of every community. Shalottes see everything around them as being spiritual in some form or another, and behave accordingly.

While one would assume it would be difficult to find enough commonalities between the realms and the various ethnolinguistically diverse groups of the PM, there's a core set of values all groups do agree upon as at least desirable and inspirational, shared by all, valued by all, and resonating with all; they are the four corners of Prutishness so to speak. By order of prioritisation, they are:

Rectitude, rationality, resourcefulness, and retributiveness.

We value rectitude since it's the foundation for all others—you may not be clever, you may not be experienced, you may not be perceptive, you may have no other merit, but you can always choose propriety and shun arbitrariness.

We value rationality since as thinking creatures we benefit from relying on our reason and logic to make decisions and recognise merit—and even if you fail to reach a good conclusion yourself you can still listen to another.

We value resourcefulness since circumstances environmental, social, or other, demand a variety of solutions and approaches, and being quick, clever, able, or experienced allows navigating such conditions and twists and turns—and even if you fail at being resourceful yourself, you can still think, be righteous, and avoid burdening others.

We value retributiveness since we're emotional creatures and we're all too familiar with the consequences of neglecting emotional needs, matters of dignity, and failing at reciprocity—and even if you're unable or unwilling to pursue such, you still benefit from recognising said need, and you can always forgive when it's reasonable and right.
