Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"? Not at all.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Breastfeeding
[o/x] Burping (Seen as impolite unless at the end of a meal)
[o] Displays of affection
[o] Dressing provocatively
[o] Eating
[o/x] Intoxication (Being under the influence of alcohol or marijuana isn't seen as problematic, but true intoxication is seen as a sign one has poor self-control)
[o] Passing gas
[o] Ranting about personal issues
[o] Smoking
[o] Swearing
[o] Taking photos of other people (With their permission)
[o] Wearing beach attire (Everyday atire for most native Asàiti is almost beachwear in many countries)
[o] Wearing sport attire
[o] Wearing pyjamas (It isn't seen as rude, just out of the ordinary, like wearing a costume)
[o] Yawning without covering mouth

Interactions

How do people say "hello" and "goodbye"? Common greetings include "Dà huit!", "Latha-maiỻ!", "'Am-maiỻ a thu fhaiceanh!", "Qad thachlar onuàr am-dhereanadh?" and "Qad thachlar-sài?". Common goodbyes are "Bannachtaian bhiỻ a thu!", "Bannachtaian bhiỻ!", "Sinlàit!", and "Go-ỻti am mea feiac a thu ahiri!"
What do people usually do when greeting each other? A hug is almost always expected, and kissing, either on the cheeks on on the lips, is quite common.
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? Yes. "Dà huit!", "Latha-maiỻ!", or simply "An-seu!" is expected.
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? Yes. Any typical greeting is expected.
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? Yes. For feminine people, the title "Mnathanà" (abbr. Mna.) is used. For masculine people, the title "Mnathenh" (abbr. Mne.) is used. For androgynous or neutrally gendered people, "Mnathanerh" (abbr. Mnr.) is used.
Does the national language have familiar and polite forms of "you"? Not anymore, though in Sar'heilan, "tu" is still used, and is considered to be more polite than "thu".

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? Somewhat, though what constitutes good table manners is often different than most countries.
How are utensils supposed to be used? Many foods in Nua-Asàiti are eaten with the hands, though those that do require utensils often require a knife and fork, or a spoon. Noodles are typically eaten with chopsticks, and eating noodles using a spoon (accompanying a fork, in order to twirl the noodles) is considered laughable, though not impolite.
When is it acceptable to begin eating? Once everyone has sat down, or when food is placed on the table.
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? It varies greatly from person to person, but those of higher wealth tend to pay more often.
How much is the tip/service charge? No more than 5%
Which of these behaviours are acceptable during meals?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Asking for seconds
[x] Checking an electronic device
[o] Chewing with mouth open
[o] Discussing politics or religion
[x] Food left over on plate
[o/x] Eating before everyone is served (If food is placed on the table to be eaten "family style", it is appropriate to begin serving yourself and eating whenever you like)
[o] Elbows on table
[o] Hands below table
[o] Leaving the table to use the toilet
[o] Not tipping
[x] Over-tipping
[o] Refusing to try a dish (Many locals will tease less adventurous tourists, but it is not seen as offensive to not try a dish)
[o] Separating the bill
[x] Slurping or smacking sounds
[x] Speaking on mobile phone
[o] Speaking with mouth full
[x] Spilling food or drinks on other people
[x] Taking photos of the food

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? Most businesses require clothing that covers the torso, and shoes. Pyjamas are not to be worn, but nothing much more specific than that. For corporate or public service environments, business casual is common.
Is punctuality considered important in your nation? Yes, though it is standard to arrive up to fifteen minutes late to more casual affairs.
What language is business conducted in? Asàiti or English
How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? Managers are typically addressed with their title, while coworkers are typically addressed by name.
Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? No. Hierarchy is seen as dehumanizing and unethical in most situations.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home? Only when visiting them if they have just moved in, or to celebrate a special occasion centered around them.
Are gifts expected between business associates? Small tokens are expected.
Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers? Only once, at the end of the year.
When are gifts supposed to be opened? In front of them, so they can watch your reaction.
What are some gifts to avoid? Avoid food, gift cards, culturally irrelevant clothing (unless as part of return from travels), or home decor items, unless specifically asked for. More intimate gifts are allowed (and even encouraged) among friends, but avoid giving them to someone you have a professional relationship with.

Rules of the road

Which of these behaviours are acceptable on roads?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)

[o] Honking the horn

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"? Not really. We just broke out from Communist rule and our supreme military leader, General Aldenar, is carrying out his policy and program of "Reorganization" as we speak, totally reforming society according to his own vision.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Breastfeeding
[x] Burping
[o] Displays of affection
o[] Dressing provocatively
[o] Eating
[o] Intoxication
[x] Passing gas
[o] Ranting about personal issues
[o] Smoking
[o] Swearing
[o] Taking photos of other people
[o] Wearing beach attire
[o] Wearing sport attire
[o] Wearing pyjamas
[o] Yawning without covering mouth

Interactions

How do people say "hello" and "goodbye"? Um, "I salute you." and "farewell."
What do people usually do when greeting each other? wave awkwardly or salute (if military or police)
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? greet or salute
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? greet or salute
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? "Citizen" or "_ National" (It was "Comrade" under Communism, of course.)
Does the national language have familiar and polite forms of "you"? We used to, but after eight years of civil war, the language has become more abrupt, blunter, more concise. The formal pronouns have been discarded as a relic of a more entitled, wasteful, stuffy, and prissy past.

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? Depends on your behavior. We've dropped a lot of that ritualistic rubbish since the civil war.
How are utensils supposed to be used? To pick things up and eat with them? Am I missing something?
When is it acceptable to begin eating? Whenever you've paid for or finished the food and sat down to it.
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? Whoever eats. I'm not sure what other answer you expect. Who else would pay for the meal? A total stranger?
How much is the tip/service charge? Tips are a bit silly, don't you think? Just pay the bill/check and trust the proprietor to pay his/her staff an honest, living wage.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable during meals?

[o] Checking an electronic device

[o] Discussing politics or religion
[o] Food left over on plate
[o] Eating before everyone is served
[o] Elbows on table

Generally, discussing politics is not that common, as people are bored with Akrosian politics (we had a civil war, duh.). However, we'll humor you if you wish to talk about it as a tourist and guest, especially if you discuss your own country's politics. As for religion, we use your conversation to catch any possible Muslims, JWs, Mormons, etc. who practice an illegal faith. It's frankly boring and a growing number of our citizens are atheists, but it is useful for the secret police. Just don't be shocked if someone from your dinner party is hustled off in a black van right during or after supper by mystery men and women in trenchcoats.

Otherwise, generally, the rule of thumb is this: if it's scatological, contagious, vulgar, or otherwise something that can put other guests or staff off their appetites, don't say or do it. Otherwise, though, have at it. We'll mind our own business or might even be amused or entertained by it. It's not uncommon for bored and cynical Akrosians to engage in "tourist-watching" or even film you while you launch into a bizarre tirade against a dislike celebrity chef or whatever. We've dropped a lot of those arcane and unnecessary social taboos and shibboleths ever since a civil war showed us what really mattered in life: pleasure, good company, amusement, and happiness.

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? Polo shirts, business casual, sometimes even pure casual, often military fatigues or military jackets left over from the war. The war really screwed up the textile industry, and again, we no longer have the patience for many formal BS things that proved futile or wasteful.
Is punctuality considered important in your nation? Yes. Blame the fact that over seventy percent of the population are war veterans, thanks to the civil war. Yeah, not even kidding.
What language is business conducted in? Akrosian (duh!)
How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? "Citizen Supervisor," "Citizen Manager," or simply "Citizen."
Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? Yes and no. Lingering effects of the military chain of command tend to make a sort of pecking order inevitable and a strong sense of self-discipline and self-motivation, as well as comprehending and interpreting commands. However, a lot of formal rules, protocol, etiquette, well, the country got burned out on it and even the military has lightened up on some of the anachronistic stuff. Again, the war showed this nation the importance of "priorities," and what really did or not constitute those.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home? Not really. When you live in a country impoverished by war, you don't sweat unrealistic goals.
Are gifts expected between business associates? Same thing here. Everything is a bonus.
Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers? See above. We're a bit cash-strapped for that kind of thing as a whole. We're still trying to get more investment capital for reconstruction.
When are gifts supposed to be opened? RIght away, so one can make an honest and sincere gesture of gratitude. Also, one is expected to remember that any gift is a bonus, not socially expected or obligatory at all. One should always be grateful for any gift whatsoever.
What are some gifts to avoid? Snakes, poison, anything harmful. Otherwise, see above.

Rules of the road

Which of these behaviours are acceptable on roads?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[x] Cyclist disobeying red light
[x] Driving too fast
[x] Driving too slow
[x] Flashing the headlights (except when proper)
[]x Hitchhiking (it's dangerous and stupid in the wake of civil war)
[x] Honking the horn
[o] Jaywalking (many folks don't have cars these days, so be patient with them)
[x] Not signalling a turn
[o] Playing loud music
[x] Speaking on mobile phone
[x] Taking up more than one lane
[x] Taking up more than one parking space
[x] Tailgating
[x] Texting on mobile phone

Basically, if it distracts you and/or endangers the public safety, don't do it.

My nation does not (mostly) represent my real-life views. It's a military dictatorship with strong secularist and Islamophobic tendencies (okay, so the secularist part represents me, but not the militant Islamophobia).

Basics

what sets sapience appart from sentience, if anything does, is imagination. I mean the enjoyment of it and interest in it.

All 'animals' actually have some, enough to usually take some precautions about their own immediate futre, in addition to experiencing every emotional state we, oh so vaunded 'sapients' do as well.

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"? totally no idea what this is supposed to mean. An old word 'prudish' comes to mind, and no, let me put it this way, we put logic and consideration, the combination of the too, ahead of conserving any nontangible thing, besides what cultural inspirations are positive, which means being in the direction of logic and consideration.

Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? its not expected, but many people do, and this is acceptable also

(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? presumably people who eat there

How much is the tip/service charge? ten percent is customary, but as most eating places are self service, there is seldom anyone to tip

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"? Not at ALL. It's considered acceptable to smoke marijuana whilst naked on your front porch, and offer passers-by a drag.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Breastfeeding
[o] Burping
[o] Displays of affection
[o] Dressing provocatively
[o] Eating
[o] Intoxication
[o] Passing gas
[x] Ranting about personal issues
[o] Smoking
[o] Swearing
[x] Taking photos of other people
[o] Wearing beach attire
[o] Wearing sport attire
[x] Wearing pyjamas
[o] Yawning without covering mouth

Interactions

How do people say "hello" and "goodbye"? "Hello there, my good friend!" and "May the moon smile on you!" (loose translations)
What do people usually do when greeting each other? A handshake that turns into a friendly hug
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? Yes
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? Yes
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? Not really, usually only last names and sometimes first names. Only in formal and business situations are titles used, and even then, if one knows the other well enough, usually titles are dropped completely.
Does the national language have familiar and polite forms of "you"? No, they are one and the same.

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? Somewhat, but only in formal situations
How are utensils supposed to be used? yes.
When is it acceptable to begin eating? When the food is served
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? It's considered an honor to be the "generous one", so a friendly argument over who pays is almost always common.
How much is the tip/service charge? Tips are almost never given (as the service charge is already worked in), but 10-15% is the average if you are feeling generous.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable during meals?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Asking for seconds
[x] Checking an electronic device
[o] Chewing with mouth open
[o] Discussing politics or religion
[o] Food left over on plate
[o] Eating before everyone is served
[o] Elbows on table
[o] Hands below table

[o] Separating the bill
[o] Slurping or smacking sounds
[x] Speaking on mobile phone
[o] Speaking with mouth full
[o] Spilling food or drinks on other people
[x] Taking photos of the food

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? somewhat formal or business casual, there's not a solid throu-line.
Is punctuality considered important in your nation? Not very, but more than 30 minutes late is considered abuse of a privelege.
What language is business conducted in? Basilian
How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? By their names, there are no "sir"s or "ma'am"s
Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? Not at all

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home? Yes, but not fancy. Depending on the occasion, anything from a flower, to a pretty rock, to a bottle of wine, to a joint can be acceptable
Are gifts expected between business associates? Yes
Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers? Not on a daily basis, but it is considered a kind gesture and a show of how much you respect the education they give you. Teachers and educators are greatly respected in Basilia, but they are expected to earn that respect. A student doesn't need to show reverence to a teacher if they do not believe they are showing wisdom.
When are gifts supposed to be opened? In front of the giver.
What are some gifts to avoid? There's not really a good example of this. Maybe just like, not poop? Or just a plain old stick?

Rules of the road

How do people say "hello" and "goodbye"? Bonjour ("good day") is the first French word that comes to mind for most people, and it works here. But salut ("hi") is used more, and can mean goodbye too. Or even the Italian word ciao.
What do people usually do when greeting each other? Just a verbal greeting will suffice. The elaborate kissing ritual seen in France/southern Europe is considered archaic and provincial here.
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? Not really. It's a thoughtful act, but nobody will be offended if you forget.
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? see above
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? Less and less. Monsieur (my sir) and Madame (my lady) are now only used for holders of knighthoods and national orders.
Does the national language have familiar and polite forms of "you"? The French language has 2 ways to say "you": tu (familiar) and vous (polite). Vous is used for groups of 2+ people, no exception (this is a hardcoded linguistic rule). But we've moved away from using vous for individuals because it creates a class divide and implies that some people are better than others.

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? Hah! We share a language with the inventors of the word etiquette ... but that's about the only thing in common. Socially we're nothing like the French – more like Vikings.
How are utensils supposed to be used? To get food into your mouth efficiently. We're not picky about how you hold them.
When is it acceptable to begin eating? immediately
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? Most people divide the bill.
How much is the tip/service charge? 5 to 10 %, included in menu price.
Which of these behaviors are acceptable during meals?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o/x] Asking for seconds (at a restaurant you'll need to pay more for that)
[o] Checking an electronic device
[x] Chewing with mouth open
[o] Discussing politics or religion
[x] Food left over on plate (only take what you can finish)
[o] Eating before everyone is served
[o] Elbows on table
[o] Hands below table
[o] Leaving the table to use the toilet
[o] Not tipping
[x] Over-tipping
[o] Refusing to try a dish (nobody likes everything)
[o] Separating the bill
[o] Slurping or smacking sounds
[o/x] Speaking on mobile phone (not too loud)
[x] Speaking with mouth full
[x] Spilling food or drinks on other people
[o] Taking photos of the food

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? Qu'est-ce que c'est? (in other words, none)
Is punctuality considered important in your nation? Not really, we use "Latin time" (30 minutes is the guideline). Unless you're catching a train – those leave on the millisecond.
What language is business conducted in? French. Businesses near the border with Italy may also speak Italian.
How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? First name or nickname (in some companies, employees pick a pseudonym and use that instead of their real names – popular with programmers especially).
Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? no

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home? no
Are gifts expected between business associates? no
Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers? no
When are gifts supposed to be opened? Immediately. It's also perfectly acceptable to decline a gift (if you won't be able to use it, for example).
What are some gifts to avoid? Gifts that make assumptions about someone's lifestyle.

Rules of the road

Which of these behaviors are acceptable on roads?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o/x] Cyclist disobeying red light (you can roll through a red if there are no other cars)
[x] Driving too fast
[o/x] Driving too slow (if you're the only car)
[o] Flashing the headlights
[o] Hitchhiking
[o] Honking the horn (mandatory if there is a bend)
[x] Jaywalking
[o] Not signaling a turn
[o/x] Playing loud music (not near homes)
[o] Speaking on mobile phone
[o] Taking up more than one lane (so few cars that nobody would suffer)
[x] Taking up more than one parking space
