Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"? No. Those who disagree prefer the term “traditional.”
Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Breastfeeding
[o] Burping
[x] Displays of affection
[o] Dressing provocatively
[o] Eating
[x] Intoxication
[o] Passing gas
[x] Ranting about personal issues

How do people say "hello" and "goodbye"?
English: Hello/Goodbye
Equestrian: Čourr djish ponu/Soum’us gärrösh*
German: Guten Tag/Auf Wiedersehen
Mandarin Chinese: 你好/再见 (nǐ hǎo/zàijiàn)
*Ultimately, the proper phrase for “goodbye” depends on what the speakers talked about in the conversation, but this is the most polite general idiom.
What do people usually do when greeting each other? The most common gesture when greeting is to bow or shake hands. Ponies tend not to do anything special, although some might shake hooves with other Ponies.
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? Yes in the Neighlander region (where Pony culture is dominant), no elsewhere.
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? Yes in the Neighlander region, no elsewhere.
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? Generally not with Ponies, yes with humans.
Does the national language have familiar and polite forms of "you"? English does not; German and Equestrian have fairly standard T-V distinctions, while Chinese has the distinction plus a number of revived honorifics.
Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? Absolutely.
How are utensils supposed to be used? With Western utensils, one eats Continental-style (the fork always in the left hand). Chopsticks are always used with the right hand.
When is it acceptable to begin eating? It depends on your host; many expect you to wait ten seconds after being served, otherwise, there is no expectation that everyone else be served first. Most meals are served family-style anyway, even in very formal settings, so the problem never really comes up. Families that say grace do so before serving the food altogether, often to emphasize that the purpose of the meal is to commune as a family and not merely to eat.
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? Paying Dutch is expected unless the meal is intended as a gift or business expense.
How much is the tip/service charge? There is a 15% service charge mandated by law. Tipping is considered rude except in the Neighlander region, and even then it is only acceptable if you personally know the server, cooks, manager, or owner of the restaurant, which means that it must be given in the recipient’s presence.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable during meals?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Asking for seconds
[o/x] Checking an electronic device (English and German speakers consider it more acceptable than Chinese and Equestrian speakers, but none find it acceptable when another person is talking.)
[x] Chewing with mouth open
[o] Discussing politics or religion
[o] Food left over on plate (not in itself, but it is rude to throw food away)
[o] Eating before everyone is served (see above for more info)
[o] Elbows on table
[o] Hands below table
[o] Leaving the table to use the toilet [Fun Fact: In Equestrian, the word for “sh*t” and the phrase for “excuse me” are etymologically related.]
[o] Not tipping (we assume you mean beyond any service charge; not paying the service charge is considered petty theft)
[x] Over-tipping
[o] Refusing to try a dish
[o] Separating the bill
[x] Slurping or smacking sounds
[x] Speaking on mobile phone
[x] Speaking with mouth full
[x] Spilling food or drinks on other people (that’s not just rude; that might be assault and battery!)
[o] Taking photos of the food

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? Most businesses expect at least business casual in all general cases; conservative dress when dealing with international clients or customers. Ponies, of course, often go naked anyway.
Is punctuality considered important in your nation? Yes. People are expected to either be early or on time.
What language is business conducted in? Generally is the dominant language of the company, which is usually either English or Equestrian. With international clients or customers, it is conducted in the client or customer’s preferred language.
How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? Bosses get the language’s equivalent of “Sir” or “Madam” unless the boss says otherwise. Coworkers are often referred to on a first-name basis even if one has just met them.
Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? No. Managers are seen as mere technical experts, perhaps with more business acumen, to whom one gives practical deference. It is not uncommon (but not particularly common either) for subordinate workers to override a manager’s decision by majority vote and a written explanation, which is allowed in many collective bargaining agreements without an enforceable managerial rights clause (and even some that do, and most corporate workplaces have some sort of CBA as mandated by law).

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home? No.
Are gifts expected between business associates? No.
Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers? No.
When are gifts supposed to be opened? They may be opened immediately.
What are some gifts to avoid? No gift is totally off limits or a faux pas, but some are typically not preferred:
  • Clocks (especially with Chinese speakers)
  • Electronic Devices, especially newly-developed ones (particularly with bilingual English and Equestrian-speaking Ponies, where the Equestrian word for “technology” sounds a bit like the English “nothing”)
  • Mass-Produced Foods, including Candies and Chocolates (and Ponies also expect further that if you do give food as a gift, it must have been made by yourself)
  • Money and Gift Cards without a suggestion of what to buy with it
  • Wine, Beer, Liquors
Rules of the road

Which of these behaviours are acceptable on roads?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[x] Cyclist disobeying red light
[x] Driving too fast
[x] Driving too slow
[x] Flashing the headlights
[o] Hitchhiking
[x] Honking the horn
[x] Jaywalking
[x] Not signalling a turn
[x] Playing loud music
[x] Speaking on mobile phone
[x] Taking up more than one lane
[x] Taking up more than one parking space
[x] Tailgating
[x] Texting on mobile phone

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"?
On the whole, no, Strathan's are fairly moderate. However, in polite company, certain standards are expected to be observed - these are highlighted as appropriate herein.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Breastfeeding (Dependent on one's company and situation. Fine in parks, cafés, etc. Not in restaurants, meetings, etc.)
[x] Burping
[o] Displays of affection (hand-holding, pecks on the lips or cheek, hugs, etc. Excessive affection beyond this is not generally accepted.)
[x] Dressing provocatively
[o] Eating
[x] Intoxication
[x] Passing gas
[x] Ranting about personal issues
[o] Smoking
[x] Swearing
[o] Taking photos of other people (With permission)
[x] Wearing beach attire
[x] Wearing sport attire
[x] Wearing pyjamas
[x] Yawning without covering mouth

Interactions

How do people say "hello" and "goodbye"? Variations on "good day", "good morning", "good afternoon", "good evening" in most Strathan languages are accepted as "hello" and "goodbye". Other variations within the various languages of the United Kingdom are also acceptable.
What do people usually do when greeting each other? A firm handshake, keeping eye contact.
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? Yes, one normally thanks them on leaving
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? Yes, one normally thanks them on leaving
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? Yes, this is an important aspect of formal society. One normally refers to someone by their title and family name unless requested to do otherwise. Dr. Smith, Mrs. Harris, etc. For nobility, one should address them with their proper styles on the first occasion (e.g., Your Grace, Your Lordship, etc.) and thereafter as "Sir" or "Ma'am".
Does the national language have familiar and polite forms of "you"? Strathan Standard English does not, nor does Strathisch. However, Gaidhlig has "thu" (informal) and "sibh" (formal). Many of the other regional languages also have separate forms of the second person depending on formality.

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? Yes, this is still a value instilled in our school system
How are utensils supposed to be used? As they are laid out, from outside to inside. Fork in the left hand and the knife in the right, always. Spoons are generally held in the right hand, however, this is not strict and most people follow hand-preference for spoon use.
When is it acceptable to begin eating? Once all guests have received food and the most senior person has started their meal. In some cases, the most senior person may give grace, in which case, one should only start eating after the grace.
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? Formally, the most senior person at the table, i.e., bosses at a business meal, fathers at a family meal, etc. On a date between a man and a woman it was normally accepted that the man pays, however, in general for dating nowadays, the person who invited the other out pays. Splitting the bill is seen as acceptable as long as it is done efficiently so as not to inconvenience staff.
How much is the tip/service charge? There is no strict guideline here as most service staff earn a living wage. Customers may tip as they see fit for the service received, but there is no expectation.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable during meals?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[x] Asking for seconds
[x] Checking an electronic device
[x] Chewing with mouth open
[x] Discussing politics or religion
[o] Food left over on plate (In some areas, cleaning one's plate fully is seen as an insult to the chef by way of saying you were not provided with enough. This varies from region to region)
[x] Eating before everyone is served
[x] Elbows on table
[o] Hands below table (Hands on one's lap during a meal is considered perfectly acceptable)
[o] Leaving the table to use the toilet (One simply excuses oneself, there is no need to give a reason)
[o] Not tipping
[o] Over-tipping
[x] Refusing to try a dish
[o] Separating the bill
[x] Slurping or smacking sounds
[x] Speaking on mobile phone
[x] Speaking with mouth full
[x] Spilling food or drinks on other people
[x] Taking photos of the food

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? Most businesses operate on either business-casual (shirt and trousers) or business attire (a full lounge suit). Smaller businesses may dress in causal wear, but for meetings, especially between companies, formal dress is normally advised.
Is punctuality considered important in your nation? Yes. A meeting is expected to begin at the scheduled time. Most people, therefore, arrive five to ten minutes in advance to ensure they are adequately prepared.
What language is business conducted in? In general, Strathan Standard English. However, smaller companies may operate in regional languages. Meetings between companies are always conducted in SSE.
How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? Always by their title and family name.
Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? Yes. Interrupting a superior without good reason is deemed quite rude.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home? For formal occasions, yes.
Are gifts expected between business associates? Not strictly, however, executives of large companies may present each other with a gift when meeting.
Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers? It is not expected, but most students do at the end of the academic year.
When are gifts supposed to be opened? Straight away, one must insist that it's too much and then show surprise and gratitude when opening it. There are some rather intricate unwritten social rules around gift giving.
What are some gifts to avoid?
Roses (reserved for lovers)
Lilies (reserved for funerals)
Flowers in even numbers (reserved for funerals)
Foodstuffs liable to quick spoilage
Wine, unless of a reasonable quality

What do people usually do when greeting each other? If the people are new to each other, they would shake hands. If it is a person you know, then this depends. If you're seeing a family member, it is best to hug or shake hands.
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? No
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? No

If the service was exceptional and was very good, you may tip a maximum of 20% of the cost, although overtipping is still acceptable. If the service was fine, but could have room for improvement, you may feel free to lower the tip. You are free to not tip at all if you believe the service was highly inadequate.

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"? No.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Breastfeeding
[o/x] Burping (depends on the region)
[o] Displays of affection
[o] Dressing provocatively
[o] Eating
[o] Intoxication
[o] Passing gas
[o] Ranting about personal issues
[o] Smoking
[o] Swearing
[o/x] Taking photos of other people (only if they consent)

Interactions

How do people say "hello" and "goodbye"? Depends on the language - in German, Lillorainen's main language, it's "hallo" und "tschüss" when informal. "Guten Tag" (it will most likely sound like Joode Daach, as a certain dialect is predominant in Lillorainen) is formal.
What do people usually do when greeting each other? Shaking hands is very common, if you meet someone the first time. Depending on how close you are to someone, the range goes from nodding to hugging (family, friends etc.)
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? No, but no one will mind if you do.
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? No, but no one will mind if you do.
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? Yes, but rarely, one people know each other - it's dropped really fast.
Does the national language have familiar and polite forms of "you"? German does (du/Sie). Other languages that are prevalent in the FL, like Danish or Swedish, do not have this (any more).

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? Rather less.
How are utensils supposed to be used? Knife in one hand, fork in the other one - which one's which, is up to you.
When is it acceptable to begin eating? As soon as you're hungry.
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? The one who invites - if there's someone. Usually, if you go out with the same person, one pays the first time, the other one next time, then the first one again, etc. This is independent from gender.
How much is the tip/service charge? Usually you just round up to full Marks. You don't have to, though.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable during meals?

How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? With their names, at best ...

Which of these behaviours are acceptable on roads?

[x] Driving too slow

[o] Hitchhiking
[o] Honking the horn

Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

[o] Breastfeeding
[o] Burping
[o] Displays of affection
[o] Dressing provocatively
[o] Eating
[o/x] Intoxication (being drunk is fine, but not if it makes you a jerk)
[o] Passing gas

[o] Swearing
[o/x] Taking photos of other people (not up close)

[o] Wearing pyjamas
[o] Yawning without covering mouth

Interactions

How do people say "hello" and "goodbye"? We use the same word for both: "ciao".

Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? No, but it's certainly appreciated.
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? No, but it's certainly appreciated.
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? Largely a thing of the past, because status markers have no place in a 21st-century egalitarian society.
Does the national language have familiar and polite forms of "you"? see above

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? no
How are utensils supposed to be used? Whatever way is comfortable. Not everyone has the same dominant hand.
When is it acceptable to begin eating? When you get your food.
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? Individually, or the one inviting. Sex does not factor in.
How much is the tip/service charge? Nothing, for coffee shops and fast food restaurants. Some nicer restaurants charge for service, but it's included in the menu price.

[o] Asking for seconds
[o] Checking an electronic device
[x] Chewing with mouth open
[o] Discussing politics or religion
[o/x] Food left over on plate (if you can't finish your food, try asking others if they want it)
[o] Eating before everyone is served
[o] Elbows on table
[o] Hands below table
[o] Leaving the table to use the toilet
[o] Not tipping
[x] Over-tipping
[o] Refusing to try a dish (nothing rude about that – everyone has different tastes)
[o] Separating the bill
[o] Slurping or smacking sounds
[o/x] Speaking on mobile phone (only for quick calls, otherwise it's annoying)

[o] Taking photos of the food

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? There is none – you can come in your beach outfit and we won't say anything.
Is punctuality considered important in your nation? San Prosperans are not fussy about the minutes and seconds. Being late by up to 30 minutes (or even an hour) is considered "on time".
What language is business conducted in? Italian, but many San Prosperans understand English and are happy to use it.
How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? Like you would your friends – titles and honorifics are a thing of the past. The only exception is the military, where rank + first name is used.
Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? no

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home? no
Are gifts expected between business associates? no
Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers? no

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"? - Yes, very, very much so. Most other nations consider Kawaiians to be absolute fanatics when it comes to politeness. Kawaiian public culture is often described as "one very long, very formal tea party."

Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Breastfeeding - If she's discreetly covered and in an area mainly reserved for women.
[x] Burping
[x] Displays of affection - Totally forbidden. Kawaiian couples wouldn't even be caught holding hands in public.
[x] Dressing provocatively - Considered a "breach of public harmony" (BPH); you can get arrested for it.
[o] Eating
[x] Intoxication - Also considered a BPH.
[x] Passing gas
[x] Ranting about personal issues - No Kawaiian would even consider this; it's completely outside their culture.
[x] Smoking
[x] Swearing - Also a BPH.
[x] Taking photos of other people - Not without their permission.
[o] Wearing beach attire - Only at the beach, obviously, otherwise a BPH.

[x] Wearing pyjamas - That would fall under "dressing provocatively", i.e. a BPH.
[x] Yawning without covering mouth

How do people say "hello" and "goodbye"? - The standard Kawaiian greeting is just "Peace"
What do people usually do when greeting each other? - Kawaiians bow. Shaking hands is considered crude.
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? - Yes
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? - Yes
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? - Kawaiians use a huge number of honorifics to denote the social status of the person being spoken to relative to the speaker. They're gender-neutral, however.
Does the national language have familiar and polite forms of "you"? - No. However, using the 2nd person pronoun ("you") is considered very familiar. When being polite, Kawaiians address people in the 3rd person with the appropriate honorific.

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? - Yes, very, they're drilled in at an early age.
How are utensils supposed to be used? - Kawaiians use chopsticks and occasionally spoons. Knives and forks are considered barbaric and fit only for the kitchen, not the dinner table.
When is it acceptable to begin eating? - Only after a blessing has been said over the meal, usually by the eldest member at the table. When dining alone, Kawaiians offer a blessing to the person serving the food on behalf of all who were involved in making it.
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? - The host; in a family setting that would be the father.
How much is the tip/service charge? - Kawaiians don't tip; it's considered insulting because it implies the owner of the restaurant is not paying his staff enough.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable during meals?
([o] for acceptable, [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Asking for seconds
[x] Checking an electronic device
[o] Chewing with mouth open
[o] Discussing politics or religion - Kwaiians are not politically or religiously diverse, so this isn't an issue.
[x] Food left over on plate - Food is usually served from a common plate/bowl; you're expected to take only as much as you plan to eat.
[x] Eating before everyone is served - The blessing over the meal is given after everyone is served, and eating before the blessing is given is considered VERY rude.
[o] Elbows on table
[o] Hands below table
[o] Leaving the table to use the toilet - Only after making a very discreet excuse so as not to call attention to what you're doing.
[o] Not tipping - Kawaiians customarily don't tip, see above.
[x] Over-tipping - ditto
[o] Refusing to try a dish - Kawaiians sometimes have dietary restrictions for various religious reasons, any of which is an acceptable excuse to refuse food.
[x] Separating the bill - The host of the party is expected to pay, but in informal settings (among friends, for example) it's customary for the other guests to make it up at a later point.
[o] Slurping or smacking sounds - These aren't objectionable; they imply you're appreciating the cook's work.
[x] Speaking on mobile phone
[x] Speaking with mouth full
[x] Spilling food or drinks on other people
[o] Taking photos of the food

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? - Conservative and discreet, nothing flashy or idiosyncratic.
Is punctuality considered important in your nation? - Yes, absolutely. It's considered rude and insulting to keep someone waiting without a VERY good excuse for doing so.
What language is business conducted in? Kawaiian (think bad anime-style English)
How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? - In the 3rd person with the appropriate honorifics, usually "-san" if you're speaking to someone senior to you or "-kun" if you're talking to someone junior.
Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? - Yes. Seniority is VERY strongly respected.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home? - Only during holidays, and only small things like flowers etc.
Are gifts expected between business associates? - Also only during holidays, and only from seniors to juniors, the other way would raise the suspicion of bribery.
Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers? - No, that would also be suspected bribery.
When are gifts supposed to be opened? - After thanking the giver, of course.
What are some gifts to avoid? - Anything with a romantic or sexual connotation unless it is appropriate to the level of intimacy in the giver and givee's relationship. Kawaiians are EXTREMELY formal about courtship, and appropriate gift-giving is a part of that.
