Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"?
Not really. The culture between the 141 citizens is very close.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)

[X] Burping
[X] Displays of affection
[O] Dressing provocatively
[O] Eating

How do people in your nation say "hello" and "goodbye"?
Xallóŭ or the dialectal equivalent is used for greeting someone in Dirlandic. Bōźúŕ is very common in Rivière, however.
Taxk is used for farewells, and translates as 'thanks' in Dirlandic. There is a word for bye, baĭ, but this considered rude to the other party's quality of company and dismissive.

What do people usually do when greeting each other?
A single-pass wave from left to right with the right hand.

Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store?
Yes, a simple xallóŭ and taxk would do.

Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus?
We don't have buses, but a wave would suffice to board on, and a taxk when leaving.

Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used?
No. First names are always used, as the majority of citizens use the Icelandic patronymic naming method, and family names are only used in other countries.
Addressing people with their last name is considered distancing and communication is normally cut off in response.

Does your nation's language have familiar and formal forms of "you"?
Þű is the only word for you, and is informal.

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation?
Yes, but the knives won't be used to cut necks if broken.

How are utensils supposed to be used?
Left hand fork, right hand knife. Of course, left-handed people will use the other hands, and this is alright.

When is it acceptable to begin eating?
A few seconds after being served. This shows you are eager for the food, and delay is met with disappointment.

(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal?
Everyone pitches in. On a date, usually the woman, though the man may insist to pay even a small amount.

How much is the tip/service charge?
0DLK. Tips are seen as degrading to the establishment, and restaurants often pay enough for the servers.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable at mealtimes?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[O] Asking for seconds
[X] Checking an electronic device
[X] Chewing with mouth open
[O and X] Discussing politics or religion
(Religion is seen as very personal, and not discussed. Politics, however, is not private at all. Everyone is in government, after all.)
[X] Food left over on plate
[O] Eating before everyone is served
[O] Elbows on table
[O] Hands below table
[O] Leaving the table to use the toilet
[O] Not tipping
[X] Over-tipping

Business

Suit and trousers. No ties.

Is punctuality considered important in your nation?
No, but 10 minutes late or more is considered tardy and disrespectful.

What language is business conducted in?
English or French.

How should bosses and coworkers be addressed?
First name.

Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture?
No.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home?
No, your company is enough.

Are gifts expected between business associates?
As above.

Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers?
As above.

When are gifts supposed to be opened?
After they leave, if they gave a gift.

What are some gifts to avoid?
Jewellery, raw money, expensive gifts. Typical gifts are a fruit basket harvested yourself or a fish or two. Maybe a rare bug you caught earlier in the day.

Internet

Are people less or more formal online than in real life?
As informal as in real life.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable online?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)

How do people in your nation say "hello" and "goodbye"?
"Hallo" or "hej" for hello and "tschüss" or "hej-hej" are used (depending on the language).

What do people usually do when greeting each other?
A handshake for the first time meeting, a fist bump or rough waving every time after.

Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store?
Not expected, but most people do

Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus?
Not expected, but most people do

Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used?
Rarely, possibly just within the first few times meeting, given a certain age difference (if roughly the same age, you use first names).
Equivalents of 'Miss' are not used any more. You use the first name then.

Does your nation's language have familiar and formal forms of "you"?
In German, Danish, and NSDV only for persons generally respected, like teachers or policemen, otherwise not. (Note: this concerns the use in Duborg, not in the RL nations these languages originate from)
The Duborger Poles, known as one big community where pretty much everyone knows everyone, mostly don't use the Polish formal adresses "pan/pani" any more (the Polish grammar itself, unlike other Slavic languages, does not have formal addresses).

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation?
Not really. Just don't be a hog.

How are utensils supposed to be used?
Knife in one hand, fork in the other hand. Easy.

When is it acceptable to begin eating?
Whenever you're hungry

(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal?
Duborgers often agree on the "you pay this time, I pay the next time, then you again and so on" scheme.

How much is the tip/service charge?
While there is no general convention on that issue, most Duborgers just round the price up onto the next full Mark.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable at mealtimes?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Asking for seconds
[o] Checking an electronic device

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses?
There is no general dress code. We just recommend foreigners to dress warmly in winter. Winters are hard in Duborg.
(Foreigners actually come here? Wow ...)

Is punctuality considered important in your nation?
In extremely formal cases, a "noble delay" might be even expected. Otherwise yes, try to be on time. Or make up an excuse.

What language is business conducted in?
German has become the lingua franca of business in Duborg. But Danish and Neo-Scandinavian (all variants) are gaining popularity again too.

How should bosses and coworkers be addressed?
Whatever they wish

Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture?
It used to be during the reign of the Old Regime, but it has changed since then. So, rather no.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home?
Not expected, but we certainly don't refuse accepting them

Are gifts expected between business associates?
Not expected, but we certainly don't refuse accepting them

Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers?
No.

When are gifts supposed to be opened?
Right after receiving them, unless you're asked to open it later for some reason

What are some gifts to avoid?
There's actually nothing you can't give as a gift.

Internet

Are people less or more formal online than in real life?
Rather less.

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"?
Somewhat. It really depends on the situation.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Breastfeeding
[x] Burping (unless among friends in a casual setting)
[o] Displays of affection (no making out)
[/] Dressing provocatively (depends entirely on what kind of image your entire outfit gives off)
[o] Eating
[/] Intoxication (being so drunk you can barely stand will get you laughs and some concern but it's not "acceptable")
[x] Passing gas
[o] Ranting about personal issues
[x] Smoking
[o] Swearing
[o] Taking photos of other people (if you ask)
[o] Wearing beach attire (at or near the beach)
[o] Wearing sport attire
[x] Wearing pyjamas (unless it's 2am and you're at a 2/7 in which case nobody cares)
[o] Yawning without covering mouth

Interactions

How do people in your nation say "hello" and "goodbye"?
"Haiipan" and "Gopan".

What do people usually do when greeting each other?
It really depends on the person's personality, and the person they're greeting. Anything from handshakes, hugs, cheek kisses, waves, nods, bows, and friendship handshakes are the norm.

Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store?
Greeting any staff when they greet you is, and saying goodbye is, too.

Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus?
Yes.

Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used?
Yes.

Does your nation's language have familiar and formal forms of "you"?
No, it's always "mi".

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation?
Not particularly. There's a set amount of rules everyone with any decency follows, but the rules are rather simple.

How are utensils supposed to be used?
The way they were designed to be used...?

When is it acceptable to begin eating?
When you get your food.

(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal?
Whoever insists upon paying.

How much is the tip/service charge?
None. Tips/service charges are not a thing.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable at mealtimes?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Asking for seconds (perfectly acceptable but people often won't out of politeness, despite it not being viewed as impolite to do so)
[o] Checking an electronic device
[x] Chewing with mouth open
[x] Discussing politics or religion (unless you're some important political figure surrounded by other political figures)
[o] Food left over on plate
[o] Eating before everyone is served
[o] Elbows on table
[o] Hands below table
[o] Leaving the table to use the toilet
[o] Not tipping
[x] Over-tipping
[o] Refusing to try a dish
[o] Separating the bill
[x] Slurping or smacking sounds
[/] Speaking on mobile phone (casual settings, or alone, or with a lot of people is okay, but if you're on a date it's considered a little rude unless it was important)
[x] Speaking with mouth full
[x] Spilling food or drinks on other people (not acceptable but everyone knows accidents happen so if it does happen, it's okay, they understand)
[o] Taking photos of the food

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses?
Their uniform. For patrons, it's casual wear.

Is punctuality considered important in your nation?
Somewhat. Making it to appointments on time is very important and you are expected to show up 5-15 minutes early, but if you tell a friend you'll be at their house "around" 4pm, and you arrive at 4:20, it won't be a big deal.

What language is business conducted in?
Polite.

How should bosses and coworkers be addressed?
Politely and by their names.

Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture?
Not so much. Bosses are expected to value their employees and their opinions.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home?
If you're visiting for the first time and it's of a more formal atmosphere (such as a dinner party), yes. If you made a friend at school and they invited you over to play games, no.

Are gifts expected between business associates?
Not expected, but always welcomed.

Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers?
Not expected, but always welcomed.

When are gifts supposed to be opened?
Whenever the person receiving the gift decides to, which in a private setting is usually once they and the gifter have sat down.

What are some gifts to avoid?
Certain types of flowers are famously associated with death/funerals, such as bleeding hearts, lilies, and sometimes hydrangeas. Unless the individual is into that sort of thing, avoid any gifts that are associated with death. Also, sex toys, because that's apparently a thing.

Internet

Are people less or more formal online than in real life?
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable online?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Abbreviations
[o] Discussing politics or religion
[o] Not using punctuation
[/] Provocative photos (on the proper websites)
[o] Ranting about personal issues
[o] Swearing
[-] Typing in all capitals (not possible as the Lanomiran language has no difference between upper and lower, as they don't exist)
[-] Typing in all lowercase (see above)

Using the road

Which of these behaviours are acceptable on roads?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[x] Cyclist disobeying red light
[x] Driving too fast
[/] Driving too slow (not too slow; 10-15mph under the speed limit is okay)

Overview of Dosan ❀ Supreme Leader: Kyo Sung-Min

History month! It's 1989, and Dosan is in the midst of its Golden Age under the leadership of Kyo Sung-Min.
This nation is just for fun and definitely does not reflect my real political views in any way.

Basics

Some notes first:
While KiraKira Land was spawned from Japanese people, it isn't anywhere near as formal and rigid as Japan is. This is because KiraKirans are descended from subcultures. KiraKirans unlike Japanese are often very relaxed and loose and since KiraKira Land became a melting pot of sorts it has become more so. There isn't much that is taboo at all anymore. So for this reason KiraKira Land is highly socially liberal and there isn't much things that one could do to offend them besides being obviously mean.
You'll see me mention Japanese culture a lot as a comparison, because although we might speak Japanese, there are cultural differences.

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"?
No no no. In fact the exact opposite.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Breastfeeding
[o] Burping
[o] Displays of affection
[o] Dressing provocatively
[o] Eating
[o] Intoxication
[o] Passing gas
[o] Ranting about personal issues
[-] Smoking (depends on what they are smoking)
[o] Swearing
[-] Taking photos of other people (not without permission)
[o] Wearing beach attire
[o] Wearing sport attire
[o] Wearing pyjamas
[o] Yawning without covering mouth

Interactions

How do people in your nation say "hello" and "goodbye"?
Hello: こんにちは, hello hi, hei, dah/koo-doh
Goodbye: またね, さようなら, goodbye, bai bai, koo-doh
What do people usually do when greeting each other?
Bow or nod head
Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store?
It is usually expected for the store clerk to greet the customer, but not necessarily the other way around.
Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus?
Not really.
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used?
In English, no not really. In Japanese there are honourifics like さん and ちゃん. The former is formal and the latter is more informal. Fun fact, the honourific くん is rarely used here compared to in Japan, and it is often replaced with ちゃん. Also unlike Japan, さん is used even for younger people if you are not close to them.
Does your nation's language have familiar and formal forms of "you"?
Only Japanese. In fact in Japanese "you" is not used as much as it is in English, instead the person's name is used.

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation?
Not really, especially when compared to Japan or some other countries like in Europe. Talking with the mouth full is considered disgusting by some but still done despite of it by others. Saying いただきます before eating is customary. Other than that, it's casual.
How are utensils supposed to be used?
..Like anyone else would use them?
Stabbing your food with chopsticks is seen as a strange way of eating and gives you away as a foreigner rather quickly. But it's not offensive as it is in Japan.
When is it acceptable to begin eating?
Whenever? I don't really understand.
(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal?
Whoever wants to.
How much is the tip/service charge?
Tipping isn't common here.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable at mealtimes?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Asking for seconds
[o] Checking an electronic device
[-] Chewing with mouth open
[o] Discussing politics or religion
[-] Food left over on plate (it's considered wasteful if you are throwing it away)
[o] Eating before everyone is served
[o] Elbows on table
[o] Hands below table
[o] Leaving the table to use the toilet
[o] Not tipping
[-] Over-tipping (you would seem strange and the money might be refused)
[o] Refusing to try a dish
[o] Separating the bill
[o] Slurping or smacking sounds
[o] Speaking on mobile phone
[-] Speaking with mouth full
[-] Spilling food or drinks on other people (it's not nice, but if it's an accident you will be forgiven easily)
[o] Taking photos of the food

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses?
Usually there is no dress code, unless you are a hospital worker.
Is punctuality considered important in your nation?
Not anywhere near as much as in Japan. Immigrants from other countries have loosened this up even more.
What language is business conducted in?
It depends, but usually Japanese or Furbish.
How should bosses and coworkers be addressed?
Usually with さん, except for friends.
Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture?
No. It's different from Japan as we were born from subcultures and rebel youth, and are highly egalitarian. This has become part of our culture in all aspects of life. Business culture is very relaxed.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home?
Appreciated but not required.
Are gifts expected between business associates?
No.
Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers?
No.
When are gifts supposed to be opened?
Whenever but usually in front of the giver.
What are some gifts to avoid?
We don't have any persistent superstitions like Japan does. Give anything you want as long as it isn't illegal (such as dead animal flesh or racist/sexist/homophobic material).

Internet

Are people less or more formal online than in real life?
About equal.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable online?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)

[o] Ranting about personal issues
[o] Swearing

[o] Typing in all lowercase

Using the road

Which of these behaviours are acceptable on roads?
(a most of these are left blank as we do not have cars)
(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Cyclist disobeying red light (it's their fault if they get in a tram accident)

Kenmoria is an illiberal yet democratic nation pursuing the goals of communism in a semi-effective fashion. It has a very broad diplomatic presence despite being economically developing, mainly to seek help in recovering from the effect of a recent civil war. Read the factbook here for more information; perhaps, I will eventually finish it.

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"?
Not really, the government is extreme liberal. The people less so. Most people just don't care what other people do in the privacy of their own homes. A lot of things are legal, but people will sneer at you and whisper "what an uncultured barbarian" under their breaths.
Which of these behaviours are acceptable in public?

Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus?
Historically yes, not anymore purely for efficiency
Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used?
No, only Comrade
Does your nation's language have familiar and formal forms of "you"?

The Consul was traditionally the deputy to the Emperor). The word "you" was subsituted by "Fellow Worthless Peasent"

It should be noted that Victoresians eat on a raised platform on the floor and all food is served at the same time onto a large rug. People order as a group, therefore everyone is served at the same time.

Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store?
It is considered polite to acknowledge a "hej" from store clerks/cashiers in small stores. It is impolite to ignore the cashier by not replying, although from a distance a simple wave is sufficient. It is not considered particularly necessary when entering a very large supermarket or department store, where the number of cashiers is often several dozen.

Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus?
Thanking the bus driver when boarding is considered polite. "Tack sa mycket" is preferred (thank you very much), but the short form "tack" (thanks) is increasingly popular. Older bus drivers may take offense at the latter, although it is not expressly impolite. It is considered rude to enter or depart a bus without thanking the driver for his service.

Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used?
Yes. Titles are similar to those used in Franco- and Anglophone societies.

Unless a specific uniform is required or social niceties require the wearing of a suit, most Gallan businesses (even large ones) allow employees to wear jeans and polo shirts without fuss.

Basics

Is your nation considered "socially conservative"? While there are certainly Commonwealth citizens who would consider it a socially conservative nation, it would not be considered socially conservative by, for example, a late-twentieth-century resident of the Terran West.

[o] Yawning without covering mouth

Interactions

How do people in your nation say "hello" and "goodbye"? In that way.

What do people usually do when greeting each other? When meeting a stranger, a handshake is customary. Among intimate friends, hugs and cheek-kisses are common. These rituals are regardless of gender.

Is it expected to greet the owner when entering and leaving a store? Where applicable, yes.

Is it expected to greet the driver when boarding and leaving a bus? Where applicable, yes.

Are titles (Mr/Mrs/Miss) used? "Mr", "Ms" and "Mx" are used. "Miss" is sometimes used, and considered archaic. "Mrs" is rarely used, and considered archaic.

Does your nation's language have familiar and formal forms of "you"? Commonwealth English only uses "you".

Table manners

Are good table manners considered important in your nation? To an extent.

How are utensils supposed to be used? Competency with chopsticks and with a knife and fork is expected. The knife should be held in the left hand and the fork should be held in the right hand.

When is it acceptable to begin eating? When the host gives permission, but not before.

(At restaurants) Who pays for the meal? Among friends, it is customary to split the bill. In a romantic context, whoever initiates pays.

How much is the tip/service charge? There is no tipping culture in the Commonwealth.

Which of these behaviours are acceptable at mealtimes?

(Mark [o] for acceptable and [x] for unacceptable)
[o] Asking for seconds
[ ] Checking an electronic device*

* Within the relatively technologically advanced context of Commonwealth culture, some entries above are not fully applicable and have been answered approximately.

Business

What is the dress code for most businesses? Black jacket and trousers, white shirt. Standard ties are not often used; where necessary, organisational affiliation is noted through the use of a metal pin on the lapel. Suits are one of the only areas where gender difference is still observed in Commonwealth society; it is acceptable for female workers to wear a skirt and heels, although what was referred to as a 'pantsuit' is equally acceptable. The choice is considered to be stylistic, rather than being reflective of gender politics.

Is punctuality considered important in your nation? Yes. It is considered polite and efficient to arrive at least fifteen minutes before being required. To be more than roughly five minutes late is considered to be a noticeable faux pas.

What language is business conducted in? The Commonwealth is a large, linguistically diverse nation. The lingua franca is English; however, Mandarin has almost equal prevalence on Yelan and Mescalero. Other major languages of business include Arabic, French and Russian.

How should bosses and coworkers be addressed? Upon first meeting, it is customary to address your superior as "sir" (regardless of gender), and thereafter by their first name (never by a diminutive). It is customary to address your coworkers upon first meeting as "Mr/Ms/Mx (their name)" and thereafter as you wish.

Is hierarchy a strong part of your nation's business culture? To an extent. Workers are expected to contribute frankly and candidly, albeit respectfully, during planning and while reporting the progress of a project. However, it is not considered acceptable to dispute instructions while carrying them out.

Giving gifts

Are gifts expected when visiting someone's home? They are not frowned upon, but they are not usually given.

Are gifts expected between business associates? Definitely not between business associates who were not previously personal friends and who are doing business together. Between people who previously did business together and are now only friends, or between associates who were previously friends, it is considered acceptable.

Are students expected to bring gifts to their teachers? It is customary for a class to give a gift to their teacher at the conclusion of their time with that teacher, and it is frowned upon not to.

When are gifts supposed to be opened? After the recipient has received all the gifts, when they are alone. However, it is considered permissible to open a gift in front of the giver if explicitly asked to.

What are some gifts to avoid? It depends on the person.
