The Immortal Empire of Ephyra has achieved a high level of renown across the world for its actions, policies, beliefs and culture. These are some of the reasons why and how the empire is known as it is.

• Slavery ❖ The most prominent reason Ephyra is known is the practice of slavery. Slavery, widely condemned elsewhere in the world, remains as a popular and viable system in the empire, with over half of those residing in the empire being enslaved. The majority of these are enslaved to the state, working on government projects, toiling in the volcanic mines or performing other tasks. Corporations are known to employ slave labour for menial work, but for specialist companies, paid labour is necessary. The remainder of slaves are generally owned by citizens, primarily the noble families. A few wealthy lower-class individuals own slaves also. Slaves can be common or trained for specialist roles. Slavery is hereditary, meaning that a child born to a slave-mother, fathered either by free man or slave, will also be a slave. In the old days of the First and Second Empires, it was common for raiding parties of soldiers and warriors to venture beyond the borders of the empire for stock. The practice does continue today, though not as heavily. Slaves are not treated as human, but that is not to say that every master and mistress is a cruel person. Slaves are no more human in their eyes than a dog or a cat, and many slaves are treated similarly as pets. The life of a slave can be comfortable, provided that they serve well and have a master who is rewarding of such behaviour.

• Xenophobia ❖ The Ephyral race look down upon all other races as 'naturally inferior'. The closest relationship they share with another race are the Comorri, distant ethnic kin from nearly ten thousand years before. Numerous other races reside in the empire, primarily through conquest. The Zamoya, Lameen and Ishoro people were all annexed during the First Empire, and later the Second Empire. The Myrkene and Nalathi are special cases, as they are both exclusively slave races. Whilst Zamoya, Lameen and Ishoro also have slave populations, as well as Comorri and even Ephyral, they are treated better. The Ephyral have a rather narrow view of their subjects however, and reign supreme over all of them as the 'dominant' race.

• Racial characteristics ❖ The Ephyral are a unique race. Fair skin in a hot climate is the first of many abnormalities about their appearance. The Ephyral of purest blood possess either snow-white or raven-black hair, with parental genes playing next to no part in how the hair colour develops. The eyes are traditionally violet or leaning towards ruby. As the blood thins or random mutations occur, hair colour shifts towards more 'regular' colouring, as do the eyes. The skin of the Ephyral often appears as a light golden hue in sunlight, and despite the light complexion, Ephyral do not burn easily. They are naturally lithe, the women moreso. Obesity is low in Ephyra, though that may be attributed to the vanity of the Ephyral as opposed to just their genetic makeup. The helix of their ears is slightly pointed. Not to the degree of elves as seen in fantasy universes, but enough so that it is noticeable to a keen eye. When the Ephyral first began their conquests, they were seen as otherworldly beings. Their advanced technology for the time and their complex civilisation as opposed to the tribal communities and small kingdoms of their rivals did nothing to sway the idea that the Ephyral had appeared as divine visitors. This sense of awe at seeing an Ephyral led to the worshipping of them as demigods, and went far to establish Ephyral supremacy.

• Attire ❖ Ephyral dress not for coverage but for comfort or class. Men wear a long robe called a kandar, which may split at the waist if the day is hot or the man desires to rid himself of the top half. It is a highly important cultural dress, and is seen worn by all from the lowest class to the highest. What adorns the kandar, and what colours are used defines the wealth and status of the wearer. Women's cultural attire is more varied, and heavily more sexualised. The equivalent to the kandar in style if not in importance is the lashar. It, like the kandar, descends long from the waist but does not split in the middle because the two parts do not meet. The lashar bares the arms of the woman, as well as her midriff and back. The zyslos dress is not of Ephyral origin, and is not as popular but still worn. It takes the shape of a full length dress, covering the front in general entirety barring the arms. The back is left open however. The most important female dress is the nisari. It is of a complex design and highly expensive. It is the most revealing of all Ephyral dresses, and is worn majorly by young women of nobility. However, as clothing is not a requirement, it is just as common to see Ephyral men and women wearing nothing as it is to see them wearing any one of these cultural attires.

• Nihilism ❖ The Ephyral are incredibly nihilistic. Despite worshipping a pantheon of bloodthirsty gods, they are utterly convinced that life has no forward meaning or purpose. Thus most Ephyral tend to further their own finite aims and gains, understanding their memory will be temporary but ensuring it will be spectacular. This nihilistic attitude to life has also led to a general amorality about right and wrong, therefore most of their laws and traditions come from their worship of harsh deities as opposed to a decision on what is right and what is wrong. As ever, these laws may be contradictory. For example, adultery is illegal in the empire, but during the festival of Kryāhsarīsherīā it is essentially encouraged, along with acts of violence and other depravities. The behaviour of the Ephyral has led to an empire that focuses entirely on its own interests, and remains relatively isolationist, content to slave, kill and celebrate as they desire and leave everyone else alone.
